Big Finish The 4th Doctor The Curse of Time

A fiftieth anniversary special for the Fourth Doctor

The Season 12 TARDIS crew are reunited in The Curse of Time, a full-cast audio adventure celebrating half a century of Tom Baker’s Doctor, due this December.

In December 1974, the Doctor Who story Robot kickstarted both the show’s twelfth season and the much-loved era of the Fourth Doctor, and Tom Baker quickly won over viewers with his irreverent take on the Time Lord.

To mark fifty years of his bohemian wanderings across time and space, Big Finish Productions today announces The Curse of Time, a brand-new audio drama that ties into the storyline of the fan-favourite Doctor’s debut season.

The iconic Tom Baker returns as the Doctor, while Sadie Miller and Christopher Naylor reprise their critically acclaimed performances as companions Sarah Jane Smith and Harry Sullivan – as originally played by Elisabeth Sladen (Miller’s mother) and Ian Marter in the classic TV series.

This special four-part adventure, written by Jonathan Morris, is set immediately after the events of Season 12’s final serial Revenge of the Cybermen, and picks up on a story thread which began in The Ark in Space, as the time travellers discover what happened to humanity long after the events of The Sontaran Experiment.

Doctor Who – The Fourth Doctor Adventures: The Curse of Time is now available to pre-order for just £15.99 (collector’s edition double CD with slipcase + download) or £12.99 (download only), exclusively from www.bigfinish.com. Please note: the collector’s edition CD box set is strictly limited to 1,500 copies and will not be repressed.

After being dragged through a rip in the time vortex, the TARDIS returns the Doctor, Sarah and Harry to Earth. They are in medieval times, but something strange is afoot.

The villagers live in fear of the sinister Brotherhood, an order of monks that upholds the sacred laws. Then there’s Faustus Black, with his troupe of travelling players. What connects them is a terrible secret hidden in the Forbidden Forest… a cave from which nobody has ever returned…

The story guest stars Terence Wilton (who played Mark in 1974 Doctor Who story Invasion of the Dinosaurs) as the megalomaniacal Zaphiel Ixon, as well as Angus Dunican as the creepy magician Faustus Black, Scarlett Courtney as Arnica, and Rosemary Ashe as Mother Cassava.

Producer David Richardson said: “Can it really be fifty years since the Fourth Doctor arrived in Doctor Who, in the wonderful Season 12, supported by the glorious Sarah and Harry? That really is something to celebrate, and I felt the best way to do it would be to return to 1975 and add an extra story onto the run.

“So The Curse of Time follows on from Revenge of the Cybermen and comes before Terror of the Zygons, as the TARDIS is diverted on its way to Scotland. Jonathan Morris has written a smashing tale that fits perfectly into both the Nerva Beacon arc and the Hinchcliffe years. Happy anniversary to the Fourth Doctor!”

Doctor Who – The Fourth Doctor Adventures: The Curse of Time is now available to pre-order for just £15.99 (collector’s edition double CD with slipcase + download) or £12.99 (download only), exclusively from www.bigfinish.com.

This is a special release in the Fourth Doctor Adventures range, produced separately to the three other Fourth Doctor box sets released during 2024. Listeners can pre-order those three box sets (Storm of the Sea Devils, Metamorphosis, and Dominant Species) as a bundle for £54 (collector’s edition CDs + downloads) or £48 (downloads only).

All the above prices include the special pre-order discount and are subject to change after general release.

I just wish Sadie Miller sounded like Sarah Jane Smith, I suppose Liz Sladens voice is so unique it can’t really be replicated

This looks great. I’m really happy they’re doing a much more normal story for the 50th Celebration rather than some big epic

Hmmm squeezed in after Revenge.. couldn’t they have put this after Android Invasion since the Doctor and Sarah bump into Harry again?

Technically Disney Time is also squeezed in, and that also leads on into Terror, so the time line is already a mess 🙂

But you’re right, there is no reason why Harry can’t join the TARDIS again for short trips between Zygons and Hand of Fear, the time it takes to explain him stumbling into the TARDIS again is probably the same amount of time to explain a diversion from Scotland.

It says it’s a celebration of 50 years of 4th Doc, and as such is aligned to his first season. “Android Invasion” is not from that season.

I’m sure that, after this story, we will get stories (probably even a series or two knowing BF, ha) set after “Androids…” where Harry goes travelling again.

Good point Peter, makes sense that it’s set in the time frame of season 12 then.
