I don’t know if i should get this or not, I missed the war doctor figure, but I feel like I would prefer it to came with the moment box, I also missed the original NOTD 8, but I’ve heard many bad things about the face paint.

I would get it anyway, you may find the original Night of the Doctor Eighth Doctor and The Day of the Doctor War Doctor on eBay but for now I think they make good stand-in’s.

You can take rubbing alcohol to the 8th Doctors face and it takes off the blood if you don’t like it.

Having had this set for over a month now I thought it was about time I gave my thoughts on this set. It’s a very good set, definitely better than the Eleven Doctors set released back in 2010 with most of the variants being improvements:

The First Doctor from The Web Planet: This figure is a definite improvement of the figure released previously and is far superior with the sheer amount of detail on it. It is probably my favourite First Doctor variant released so far even though I don’t have either the Black & White of An Unearthly Child versions. I’m not 100% sure if it’s accurate or not but its still one of my favourite figures in this set and I’m actually not too bothered that it doesn’t come with a cane because I don’t think he had one in the episode.

The Second Doctor from The Two Doctors: This figure is also a favourite of mine as I’ve always been interested to see how a figure of an older Pat Troughton would look in 5″ form. Even though I would have preferred a figure of him in his fur coat but this does nicely and looks brilliant next to The Sixth Doctor Wave 1 variant. The detail on the hair is brilliant, if anything it makes the sculpt stand out more than on the previous versions and it is overall a nice figure. Like the First Doctor he also lacks an accesory but considering he never used his recorder in the episode I am not fussed either way.

The Third Doctor from The Three Doctors: This is my favourite figure in the set by far. Even though I will admit its not accurate and could have been done a lot better. Despite the lapels on the jacket not being resculpted (which is understandable) or the frog buttons being scuplted I still think it’s a nice variant. I am also particularly surprised in how good the quality control is due to the frog buttons being printed on with there being no paint bleed or inconsistency with the print. The headsculpt is also very good and is probably the best likeness to Jon Pertwee out of all the Third Doctor figures Character have made. It also looks exceptional when on display with the First and Second Doctors, Omega, Jo, the Brigadier and the Gel Guard from The Three Doctors and I am so pleased to finally see this iconic costume produced in 5″ form.

The Fourth Doctor from Logopolis: I didn’t get the original Season 18 Tom Baker figure so this was the perfect substitue for that. It is also a hundred times better than that figure and despite the head sculpt being the same as the original just painted differently it has the best likeness to Tom Baker out of any Fourth Doctor figure. The scarf is also a massive improvement with the addition of more accurate colours in place and the coat, shirt and especially the boots look very realistic. It makes you think why couldn’t Character paint the figure like this on the Warrior’s Gate release. If it wasn’t for the Third and Sixth Doctor figures, this would be my favourite figure in the set.

The Fifth Doctor from The Awakening: While this figure may not look very special I think it’s a very good figure and is one of the best Fifth Doctor figure’s released. I’m not too keen on how the head sculpt has been painted on this variant but I still think the costume is a cool variation. The coat has been painted in a darker colour and the celery on the lapel has been repainted differently this time around. The trousers have been painted in different shades of white and orange than on the Time Crash release and the trainers have been painted in a way to make them appear to be covered in dust from when the Malice bursts through the church wall in the episode. (I am not sure its accurate or not) Even the paint application on the Sonic Screwdriver has been improved greatly with the addition of the white stripe going accross it which previous versions lacked.

The Sixth Doctor from Real Time and other Big Finish audios: This figure is amazing. Honestly I think this is by far the best 5″ Sixth Doctor figure Character have ever released and is a major improvement from the original Real Time figure released in 2009 which I never bought unfortunately. This makes it my second favourite figure in the set after the Third Doctor, although it isn’t far off being my favourite. Unpopular opinion but I liked Colin Baker’s original costime but even I will admit that his costume looks better with all the different shades of blue which really makes the figure stand out on display with all the other figures from his era. It has also persuaded me to listen to some of Colin’s Big Finish audios as I’ve heard they’re very good. Even the Sonic Lance is slightly different as it, like the Fifth Doctor’s Sonic also has two white strips going down either side, like how it was on the original prop and has been painted in a darker colour than on the original wave 1 release.

The Seventh Doctor from Ghost Light: This figure is one of my least favourites of the set, although some of the changes on it make it far superior compared to the original. For instance, the fob chain on his coat has finally been painted silver! In addition to this, his tie, scarf and handkerchief have been painted to match the onscreen costume more accurately than on the original releases. His head sculpt has also been painted differently this time with shades of brown mixed in with the black on the sculpt for the hair yet a big complaint I have is that his head doesn’t have his hat, we have yet to see a version of the Seventh Doctor with a hat on the solemn head which should have been included in this set really instead of what we have got. The trousers have also been painted differently this time around as they seem to match the colours of the ones he wore in the 1996 TV Movie although he didn’t wear them until said movie. His question mark on top of the umbrella has been painted in a matte red instead of a glossy red seen on the original, once again I can’t tell if this is more accurate to the onscreen prop or not and in addition to this he comes with his Sonic Screwdriver which he used briefly in the 1996 TV Movie despite him never using it during the 80’s.

The Eighth Doctor from The Night of The Doctor: I am unsure what to make of this variant. I don’t like how Character have lazily painted the blood on his face and how they have made no effort to make it accurate to the make up from the minisode making him look like he has a severe case of chicken pox. However I do really like how his costume has been repainted, the scuffs on the coat and the boots look excellent and I also like how the pocket watch chain on his waistcoat has been painted in gold instead of copper. His neckerchief appears to have been painted in a glossy blue colour this time as opposed to the flat blue on the original release. I think I would’ve like this figure much more if the blood had been painted more accurately on his face matching how it appeared in the minisode as that is the only downside with it.

The War Doctor from The Day of the Doctor: This figure was incredibly slated when the pictures for the set emerged at SDCC in July with some people complaining that his jacket was completely the wrong colour and how they preferred the original variation released in 2014 despite not having the actual figure included in this set to compare with. I however disagree, if anything I prefer this variation on the War Doctor much more than the original for several reasons. Firstly, his hair has been painted accurately and is more of a silvery grey than just grey leading some people to believe that the figure is a younger version of him, when in actual fact its just a more accurate version. Secondly, I don’t mind the colour of the jacket, I think it looks much better on this figure than on the original as the shade of brown is more accuare and the weathering is also in a more accurate colour. Finally the bandolier and the waistcoat have been painted differently with the bandolier actually looking weathered instead of it being plain silver, making it a lot more accurate and the the waiscoat also featuring heavy weathering this time instead of plain olive green and while it may still cause a split in opinion on whether its the corect colour or not, I think it works fine. The scarf is different as the pattern on it has been painted in a different colour to bring it out more and covers more of it than on the 2014 release. The boots are much more detailed this time around with them being weathered in a dark green colour (even though in the episode they were the same as the ones on the original figure) which adds to the figure and makes it look different. Due to the changes on this figure I really like it and think it deserves more praise.

The Ninth Doctor from TITAN Comics: Now you’re probably thinking, “Why have I said it is from TITAN Comics and not from The Parting of the Ways?” well there is an explanation for that. Like the Third Doctor and Twelfth Doctor, this figure has been labeled as being from the wrong episode as Character released a variant of Eccleston from Bad Wolf/The Parting of the Ways back in 2013 when this version is completely different. One of the first things you’ll notice when you get the set is that this figure’s head sculpt looks a lot more cartoony in comparison to previous variants, this is because I believe he is based on various pieces of artwork from TITAN Comics as his eyebrows look much bigger and his skin tone even match that of how he appears in the comics. Another reason is that his jumper is bright purple, Christopher Eccleston never wore a jumper in this colour at all in Series 1, he wore a purple jumper in The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances but it was much darker. His trousers are also grey, once again matching the colour of trousers he wears in various TITAN Comics as he never wore grey trousers onscreen. However, his leather jacket is weathered more than on previous Ninth Doctor figures but it is not how it looks in the comics and his boots aren’t glossy black like in the show yet also not present in the comic artwork. These alterations in paint are what lead me to believe he is from the TITAN Comic range, not The Parting of the Ways, making it a very unique figure and similar to the Eighth Doctor from The Children of the Revolution. Despite this, I like the figure and it also another favourite of mine in the set due to how different it is.

The Tenth Doctor from The Shakespeare Code: At first glance, this Tenth Doctor figure will look like the same old figure we’ve had since 2006 but it has actually been subjected to changes which in my opinion improve the figure massively. The head sculpt, like most of the figures I have already mentioned in this set is a lot different compared to how the original looked. Its the same sculpt used on the figure we have seen from 2006 onwards yet it has been painted way more accurately, the hair has been painted brown with a black wash over the top of it to bring out the detail which has been done very effectively and the pupils in the eyes have been painted brown to match David Tennant’s eye colour. This in itself makes the figure a lot better but also his trench coat has been finally painted in the correct shade of brown with it being lighter and the individual buttons on either side have been painted black. The shirt has been painted white and the tie brown, although a downside is that it lacks the pattern that was seen onscreen. The suit has annoyingly not been painted brown and still remains to be grey even after all this time, leading me to question why couldn’t Character paint it brown considering they have reinterpreted every other colour so brilliantly, I suspect it was to do with the fact that it would have costed too much money to do but it would’ve been nice. Another complaint people will have is that we still haven’t got a version of this figure with bicep articulation which will also be down to it being too expensive to retool the mould to allow for such a thing, especially considering how old it is. A positive though is that the pinstripes have been painted in a darker blue which is more accurate in comparison to previous versions and another addition being that his converse feature mood on them. I am once again not sure if they were this muddy, or even muddy for that matter in the episode but it looks nice on the figure so I shan’t complain. Taking the changes into account, I actually like this figure more than I thought I would initially.

The Eleventh Doctor from The Beast Below: When this set was revealed, I generally thought it would be a bad figure, however like the Tenth Doctor figure it has surprised me massively. I will go as far to say that this is probably one of, if not the best Eleventh Doctor figure from Series 5. The head sculpt, although the exact same used since 2010 is a major improvement due to different paint applied to the sculpt and the hair has now been painted black with brown washes over the top. The paint helps make the sculpt ressemble Matt more than on any other variant from Series 5 and I am a fan of how the colour on the tweed jacket has been painted to be more of a brown than green this time, although it did look green in some episodes. The bow tie is the same colour as on previous releases yet the shirt has been painted in a darker white with the red pattern going across it. I wish Character could’ve somehow attempted to replicate the exact pattern as seen on the actual costume but I release that even in 5″ scale it would have been too difficult to manage. The trousers have been painted grey instead of black, which doesn’t bother me and the boots have been painted in a glossy black with added paint to ressemble how they have been worn out. A major plus with this figure is that it comes with the exact same Sonic Screwdriver included with the Time of the Doctor set with the green emitter at the end and the more accurate gold on the casing. This makes the figure even better than it was already.

The Twelfth Doctor from Time Heist: Regrettably this figure is my least favourite, despite being my favourite modern doctor and despite me not picking up the black shirt version last year. It is a disappointment, the paint applied to the face makes it ressemble Peter Capaldi less than on the variants released last year and the hair jas now been painted with a darker shade of grey when it was never that dark in Series 8. The shirt has now been painted in a glossier black instead of plain black yet it is still the incorrect colour as the shirt was dark blue in Time Heist. An improvement on this variant though is that the coat has been painted more accurately to ressemble the shade of blue seen on the coat in the episode and is now more navy than it is black. The lining however the weakest part of this figure as it has been painted to look more pink than red seen on the previous variants from last year. Once again I suspect this is down to Character running out of money to paint it in the accurate colour. The trousers are the same colour as before but the boots are no longer glossy black but just matte black. He comes packaged with the same Sonic Screwdriver that the previous variants came with last year.

Conclusion: Overall this set is probably one of my favourite sets Character have made and is vastly better than the previously released Eleventh Doctors set. Despite figures like the Twelfth Doctor being considerably weak I still recommend picking it up, especially for the First, Second, Third, Fourth, Sixth, War, Ninth, Tenth and Eleventh Doctor variants alone which justify the expensive price.

Just giving my thoughts on the set and you didn’t need to read it if you didn’t want too. At the end of the day, I’m giving you valid reasons as to why you should go through Toys R Us’ apalling service to buy it, which I hope are useful. Also I just want people to be happy that they can finally get this set as so many people were complaining back in July about not being able to get their hands on it. In the end, patience is all that was needed and it was eventually going to be released. I’m just sick and tired of seeing the same old comments of people moaning about certain people being able to get it first and others having to wait. I know they are all repaints but no-one is forcing you to buy it, you can pass up on it and not bother at all if you want. If you’re going to buy it: great. If not, don’t complain.

Also I don’t think you realize that not everyone has a YouTube channel to give their views on certain items so have to go through other means of doing it. As I’ve said, I’m doing you a favour and giving you information that Character and Underground Toys didn’t give like the Ninth Doctor being from TITAN comics as I’ve heard no-one at all make the connection when it was practically staring at us in the face. There are other, less frustrating methods to use when tracking down this set, you don’t have to use Toys R Us if you don’t want too, you can order it from America and get it here a lot sooner.

    • Jordan Scott

      October 22nd, 2016 - 9:30pm

Yeah, but I don’t want to pay any more than £100 for it and getting it from America would result in a big price difference. Also, we shouldn’t have to, Doctor Who is a British show therefore the UK should receive the primary attention merchandise wise – obviously this isn’t the case but ordering from America still shouldn’t have to be an option.

    • WouldYouLikeAJellyBaby?

      October 22nd, 2016 - 9:43pm

Just because its a british show doesn’t mean we should get everything first. Times change, I’m sorry but its true. Complaining will do absolutely nothing, it will make no difference whatsoever. I know how you feel, but this is plastic we’re talking about at the end of the day, maybe not to you but its just ridiculous how far people are willing to complain. I am sure you will get the set, it being on Toys R Us’ website is a good sign and it was always going to be expensive. This isn’t 2006 I’m afraid where we can get five figures for £35.00, those days are gone and people need to accept that. I’m happy we are getting figures at all, heck it fustrates me if we get nothing new but if we don’t buy what Character put out, they won’t give us figures we do want.

Impressive essay WouldYouLikeAJellyBaby?, true though. I do agree with you in some ways about the US, its good to give them a few things first as well as their is a big increasing following their so its good to respect all Who fans regardless of where they come from even if it is a British show. On my YouTube channel I have nearly 4,000 views from 70 countries so their is a really big world wide following, only fair they have somethings first. (Also I live in the UK, Leicester)

      October 22nd, 2016 - 11:07pm

Thank you prototype dalek. Yes I understand why UK fans get mad about America getting items before us but what they’ve got to understand is that the show is more popular over there now than it is here. The evidence being quite clear as they have guests like David Tennant and Matt Smith that attend conventions and the fact that the 5″ line seems extremely popular over there. We have many things to thank America for, we wouldn’t be getting new figures if the last Collector’s series wave didn’t sell well and thanks to them we are. I don’t care anymore if they’re re-releases or repaints because the way I see it is that any 5″ merchandise is better than none at all. Besides we get it eventually, even if it is a long wait, its still worth it in the end. Also I would just like to point out that all this hostility to all the American fans isn’t making our fandom look good, it isn’t their fault and at times I think that all the squabbling is childish. There are far more important things to get worked up over, this really isn’t one of them. I’m probably going to get hate for saying this bit its just my opinion and I’m allowed to say it.

    • WouldYouLikeAJellyBaby?

      October 22nd, 2016 - 11:25pm

Thanks prototype dalek. I just think we should think ourselves lucky and be grateful that we are getting new 5.5″ merchandise as the alternative is none at all. Yes, if anything the show’s ever-growing popularity is what has kept it going for so long and is one of the key reasons for why it is still around today. Honestly this year we have been so lucky with the merchandise we have been getting, in the wilderness years from 1996-2005 there wasn’t even a figure line around then and its not like we won’t be seeing the show for ages, it’ll be back at Christmas anyway. We are in a far better sitaution than some fans were when the show was cancelled, we have DVD releases, Big Finish audios, Doctor Who Magazine, novels, 5″ figures and so on that weren’t available back in the day.

I suppose we did have a few things between 1996-2005, Dapol for another couple of years, DWM, and The excellent range of product Enterprise. At least their is a few things and make it easier to collect as I think 2006-2011 their were too many figures to get that it was overwhelming (and a drain on money 🙂 ). Maybe when the series starts again next year we will get some new things.

    • WouldYouLikeAJellyBaby?

      October 23rd, 2016 - 1:29pm

There was merchandise being released during the long hiatus but not near as much as we get today. That’s why we should be lucky, people forget that the 5″ line could have died after the release of the Rory Williams figure in 2012 but thankfully its still going. Also back then there wasn’t any knowledge of the show possibly returning, until 2005 of course. The fans who lived through that period had to wait an awfully long time to see the show return to TV but we’ve only had to wait a year. I personally hope we never have a time like that again but I wouldn’t rule it out completely.

Staff saying different things contradicting each other, won’t keep one for me so I have to keep phoning as there’s no other way of telling! This is pretty cool but I still can’t help but feel that it would have been 100 times better with –
    10th – scaled up 3.75″
11th – let’s kill hitler outfit (Green coat)
    12th – new release (hoodie)

I feel that would have justified charging anything between £150-180. Whilst that may sound like a lot, I feel most people would be willing to do that for 3 new figures an the rest being repainted rereleases! Not complaining though! This is still awesome!

Actually I disagree. I have the set and the Tenth and Eleventh Doctor variants are really good. The Tenth Doctor variant is probably one of the best variants of the figure CO have ever made and the Eleventh Doctor is a major improvement over the original Series 5 release. The Twelfth Doctor however is very disappointing, I never picked up the original black shirt variant last year as the shirt he wore in Time Heist was dark blue, yet on the figure it was black. This still hasn’t been corrected and the fact the coat has been repainted to be more of a navy blue is pointless because on the new Girl Who Died variant it is the same colour as on the variants from Series 8. The lining is also completely wrong and the Dr. Martens boots aren’t glossy like on the variants from last year, though I guess it is because out of the thirteen figures in the set this is the one that fell short and was victim to cost-cutting. Don’t let the problems with the Twelfth Doctor variant put you off buying the set though as its still a great set and its worth it.

I bought this in the U.S. and had intended on only keeping doctors 1-4, but when I had them in hand they were all soooo much nicer than the original paint jobs that I couldn’t part with any of them. 9, 10, and 11 are actually about 3 times nicer looking. Eccelston’s coat looks just like distressed leather and Smith’s jacket and shirt look exceptional. Both pants and shoes on all 13 have been coloured differently and highly highly detailed. I definitely recommend this set. P.s. if you don’t like the dab of blood on 8’s lip and cheek it comes right off with alcohol)

I don’t know but it is much better than you think and is a remarkable improvement over the original. You can’t really tell the difference unless you compare the figure side-by-side with the original release from 2010.

I noticed someone on here said they’d like a re-issue of the Vespiform. Well I’ve seen one on Ebay for about £100.

When you consider how rare it is, that not a bad price.

One a different note, booboo do you know why the 5.5″ line of figures, when in the past was so vibrant and frequent seems to have come to such a halt. We have had NO series 9 figures at all.

The 3.75inch lie was poor, and a complete waste of time in my opinion.

well there are numerous reasons but from what i can see

1/ biding time until the show is on air next year before any new investment

2/ making the most of what you have whilst you still have the licence

      take you pick

    • WouldYouLikeAJellyBaby?

      October 20th, 2016 - 9:39pm

That was me and maybe it isn’t but if you’re someone like me who has mostly every figure from that wave apart from three then it isn’t really worth paying £100.00 for something you’re not far off completing. I also think its a bit of a waste of money considering you could buy something else and you never know it may get re-released.

  • Cyberman Bill

    October 20th, 2016 - 8:28pm

Why are people complaining about the price?? Where can you buy 13 figures for under 8£ each? In the US this set sells for $135 – $150.
People complained that it wasn’t in the U.K…. now it gets to the U.K. And people complain about the price. Man, people like to complain.

    • booboo

      October 20th, 2016 - 8:34pm

partly because people see the B&M sets ( eg 3rd doctor) at £4.50 a figure for good repaints, so they dont understand why these are £8

why is a re-release weeping angel £14.99 in the collectors series yet a Variant less than £3.50 in a B&M set

its not difficult to see what’s going on here

    • WouldYouLikeAJellyBaby?

      October 20th, 2016 - 8:40pm

I think people should just be happy they are finally getting this set after a long and tedious wait. I’ve had mine for a good month now and I must say it was definitely worth it in the end. Whilst I don’t display my figures from the set altogether, I think they look brilliant on display. Also think about it this way, other than the Tenth Doctor in tuxedo figure coming out later on, this is probably the most decent piece of merchandise we’re going to get this year as far as the 5.5″ range is concerned as I don’t think the next three announcements from UT will meet people’s expectations. But I’d save judgement on it until you have the set in hand because it is better than people are saying it is.

    • The Moment

      October 20th, 2016 - 8:52pm

£8 for a figure is a ba gain these days. Just look at the prices for the War Doctor on eBay etc. For people who missed on the war doctor, you can get him in this set for just £8. Bargain!

    • Anonymous

If this is how much they are charging for a set of thirteen repaints then goodness knows how much they would charge for the Tenth Doctor’s TARDIS playset re-release if they even get it. Honestly I have this set myself and despite it being great, I’m finding it hard to recommend buying, especially at that price. At least if the scalpers want to buy these in bulk its going to be a hefty price, even for them.

    • Grant

      October 20th, 2016 - 12:04pm

I disagree. It’s a lot of money yeah but it works out at just over £7 a figure. That’s cheap for a figure of most of the Doctors, not sure why people think it’s overpriced when collectors range figures are £15 each and this 13 Drs Set is a numbered edition.

    • Cyberman Bill

      October 21st, 2016 - 11:23am

Yes and you can’t compare it to the 11 doctors set. That was a mass produced item and this is a limited edition set.

    • The Living Shadow

      October 21st, 2016 - 12:59pm

Think of the B&M sets though… They’re repaints and they work out far cheaper. I was kind of hoping that this set would be price like those sets, which would make this one work out at around the price of 4 of them, as there are 12 figures, which would work out at around £60

    • Cyberman Bill

      October 23rd, 2016 - 9:37am

Yes but those are “mass” marketed items. And every figure is not repainted and the ones that are don’t have much change. This is a limited edition set. The price is great. It’s 7£ a figure. Where in the store can you buy figures for 7£’s? You can’t compare a limited edition set to a mass marketed set.
