This is a review of the Voice Interactive Assault Dalek. This is from the 2005 episode” The Parting of the Ways”. It is the same as the basic dalek but with a claw arm.

The dalek is 18” tall. It may not sound huge but the dalek is massive! The dalek figure overall is a good build quality and looks amazing; just like the real thing. The claw arm can be removed to replace with a plunger arm instead.

The claws on the arm can be moved to an open or closed position which is a very nice touch, and the gun and claw are fully pose-able.

When you turn on the dalek in the interactive mode it will turn it’s head around and flash it’s eye and ears and it will play the dalek heartbeat noise. It will say “Dalek unit, status, 100% efficiency awaiting input “. It is now ready to be spoken to.

It is now ready to be spoken to.The dalek will start off with its motion lock on. This means the dalek will not move and is ideal for demos. Pressing one of the dalek’s spheres for about 3 seconds will take the dalek out of this mode. The dalek has loads of commands that it will respond to. I will go through the main ones.

Static guarding – “dalek” + “guard location”

The dalek heartbeat sound will play for 30 seconds to give you time to clear the area. After this the dalek eye light will go out.

If someone walks in front of the dalek the eye will turn back on and say “leave this area or be exterminated “.

If no command is given after 15 seconds the dalek will exterminate you and the dalek gun light will flash.

To override this, say “dalek” + “obey me” or “dalek” + “voice command override”.

Moving room guard – “dalek” + “seek locate”

The dalek will move around the area detecting objects and heat sources (sometimes radiators or sometimes catsJ). The dalek will continue to wonder around and exterminate people, using heat and motion sensors until you tell it to obey you the same as before.

Character recognition – “dalek” + “do you recognise” + “………….”

The dalek will respond to…

• The Doctor
• Martha Jones
• The Time Lords
• The Cybermen
• The Genesis Ark
• Emotions
• The TARDIS
• The Emperor

Each character will give a different response and movement.

Plotting Attack Sequence – “dalek” + “voice command” + “dalek” + “plot attack”
This lets you programme your own attack into the dalek’s memory banks. You can programme up to ten commands at a time.
The commands are…
“Dalek” + “move” + “…. Units”
“Dalek” + “turn around”
“Dalek” + “turn left / right “+ “….. Units”
One Unit is about 5-10cm depending on the surface. The dalek runs better on flat floors or very thin carpet.
Say “dalek” + “execute attack” and the dalek will carry out your orders.

The dalek also comes with a remote so the dalek can double up as an R/C toy as well.

The button in the middle of the remote activates speech randomly. You can also control the dalek’s eye and head independently unlike the 12” daleks. The dalek moves at a nice speed and very smoothly.

However, although it has many great features, there are some things that are not brilliant about this dalek. Firstly, the dalek only works properly in almost complete silence and if not it has trouble understanding what has been said.

When the dalek is moving on its own, if it gets stuck in a corner, when it tries to reverse it tends to crash into something behind it and cause scratches or dents. The battery life isn’t brilliant and it becomes obvious that the batteries are getting weak after about an hour and a half of play.

Now the price. When first sold in shops they were available for £100 – £120. But now they are only available on eBay or sites like it. I would definitely recommend buying one; it is amazing fun, a great display piece and a real collector’s item and I can see them selling for stupid amounts of money in the future. An ideal price would be £80 – £125 depending on quality of the figure and if it has its box etc.

Well that’s all I can say really about this dalek. Overall the voice interactive assault dalek is a wonderful toy for kids and adults, and is totally worth buying one if you can.
