Is the Planet of the Daleks the same as the season 10 set with updated SFX?

I’ve got all of these stories on dvd and would buy this if it was a dvd but unfortunately it’s Blu-ray which I don’t collect so sadly can’t get this release.

This has reduced to £22.99 in most places now. I have emailed HMV to see whether they will charge the lower price on dispatch as they don’t appear to have a Pre-Order price guarantee on their website… Seems even more worth it now…

HMVs policy is “For pre-orders placed with a credit/debit card, if the price of the order decreases upon release, you will be charged the lesser amount. For PayPal pre-orders you will be refunded, please allow 3 working days from the date of dispatch for these to be processed; you’ll receive an email once the refund has been issued to let you know.”

I own four of these stories already, and if I wanted the others I’d prefer the DVD versions, for the VAM. But this is a great idea, particularly for newbies, and £23 is a very competitive price (particularly if Planet is the CGI upgrade version).

Someone below already commented they thought it was a steelbook, then realised it was just the standard Blu ray.

I’ve got all of the The Collection box sets, and have all of Tennant’s era on DVD, but I’m still getting this because it’ll be nice to have the whole TLV related stuff in one case. I’m currently getting each TLV release as they launch (the two that are hardest are the escape room that’s open because of covid, and the immersive theatre thing when that’s ready for the same reasons) so it means I can rewatch these stories to tie in when I feel like it (although I have watched some within the past two years, thanks to The Collection and introducing my mother to Classic Who through those and the animations). I do have a friend who wants to wait for TLV to be over before getting into it, to save waiting, but for me, I enjoy the anticipation.

Same as me i already own these episodes on blu ray but im still getting it because im planning on getting everything related to TLV but i wont be going to the escape room and immersive theatre event as i dont live anywhere near london, i know a lot of people have mixed opinions about TLV but im loving it so far

      @DalekAgent

I’m South Wales, so fairly close to the old Experience, but still a bit far from the locations of the escape room and immersive theatre, in terms of covidd regulations.

I was thinking of what a Big Finish version of this would be like. Maybe it would include stuff like Zagreus and other things involving events from the Dark Times. Although that’ll never happen.

    • Len

      October 22nd, 2020 - 7:58pm

I’m also a bit too far away for the escape room and immersive theatre. I’m hoping they’ll either go on tour across the UK or prove popular enough to keep going for long enough that there’s enough time to plan a break that includes getting to see them.

Plan B (not the same as experiencing first hand, but better than nothing).
Film the immersive theatre (multiple angles?) and release on disc or as a download or VR experience.
As far as the escape room is concerned. A group of celebrities or better yet cast/crew from the world of DW locked in and then filmed. Big Brother meets The Adventure Game meets I’m a Celebrity…

Am I right in thinking all of these stories have a retconned thread that leads on to the current and upcoming TLV stories and therefore should be watched BEFORE we start reading/listening to the new stuff?

Personally not that interested in the whole timelord victorious thing, (apart from the odd dalek stuff and mini series), although the multimedia idea is a good one. I think ill wait to see a full story video essay when its all over. But i cant help but get the feeling of a star wars/marvel universe (not a fan of either) wannabe with this whole TLV thing. Really dont like when they try and make doctor who like other popular franchises. This bluary is a bit laughable with what episodes they chose to represent dark doctor who or at least get new fans or causal buyers interested in doctor who, The runaway bride ? why not put Time lash or Love and Monsters on it for the laugh too? i understand its easy to have already released Blu-ray stories on it and Genesis, Deadly and Fenric are great choices for a new fan or new who fan. But for non fans i think this might confuse them, with different doctors etc and then trying to connect how these stories link and what the point of the time war is and time lords and then the timelord victorious story. it might confuse the causal viewer today, especially with everything being binge watched and being linked. As a causal buyer watching this with some stories on here like State of decay wouldnt they be thinking, so its about timelords vs vampires and Daleks and possibly Fenric, hows this connected?.
ive bought loads of re-released dvds and blurays but this definitely more for a fan (regardless how much of one you are etc), then a casual buyer. I think they should of really thought about which episodes to put on this and maybe should of kept the story simple for the wider market. Dalek and timelord stories, using some to show regenerations too like power of the daleks etc.
maybe something like? “The power of the daleks”, “war Games part 10” “Terror of the autons”, “Genesis of the daleks”, “Deadly assassin”, “Remembrance of the daleks”, “Dalek”
“Journeys end” & “The end of time” maybe something like that.

We have only had one comic and one book so far, maybe the connections to some of the stories on this Blu-ray have yet to be revealed?

    • Gareth Pugh

      October 6th, 2020 - 3:05pm

But, sofasss, isn’t the organising principle connecting the stories on this release ‘times when the Doctor has either engaged with Daleks in ways/with consequences that may be brought to bear in some of the new TLV story components somewhere soon’ AND ‘times when the Doctor has shown tendencies of being a bit darker in his actions?’ Not necessarily ‘showcase key Timelord stories’ or ‘Key Dalek stories’ as such? Not sure where, say, ‘Terror of the Autons’ would fit in – other than it’s got timelords in it?

    • Rob W

      October 6th, 2020 - 3:15pm

Maybe that ‘Bonus Booklet’ will offer up some explanation?

    • Basil Funkenstein

      October 6th, 2020 - 3:25pm

You’re assuming that people will be too stupid to connect the strands and threads of the TLV arcs together and given today’s intellectual climate I’d agree with you if I didn’t choose to have faith. This isn’t a cash grab, this isn’t too confusing, this isn’t trying to be like Star Wars or Marvel. It is its own brilliant narrative spinning off from a throwaway arc at the end of Tennant’s era and exploring much more of the Doctor Who universe. There are timelines out there to follow the story and releases. You need to give people more credit, not everyone is as dumb as you make them out to be. Most people are idiots but not everyone is an idiot. Also this isn’t to represent dark doctor who, it is meant to be an example of characters or species that were in the universe in the dark times, this is why the vampires and the racnoss etc appear because they were more prominent in the universe at that time.

    • Anonymous

      October 6th, 2020 - 3:53pm

The link of the runaway bride is the racnoss, a race from the dark times. You don’t have to buy it you known

    • Doctor Stu

      October 6th, 2020 - 4:16pm

You do remember that The Doctor murdered hundreds of Racnoss children in the runaway bride while their mother stood their screaming and would have let himself die if it wasn’t for Donna, as we saw in turn left. I think it’s a perfect example of a dark Doctor moment

    • DanWFA

      October 6th, 2020 - 4:51pm

But it’s all stories that link to ‘The Dark Times’ the main setting of Time Lord Victorious. The Runaway Bride does link to the dark times by the fact The Racnoss were there at the Dark Times. This isn’t about making a set for new comers with stories to get them into Doctor Who, even if someone was to use this as a jumping on style thing, then it still would work, there’s still something in it for them

To answer the predicted influx of “Why?”

All seven stories featured are tied to TLV.

    The ones we know thus far;
Waters of Mars is obvious as it precedes Ten’s path in the story.
State of Decay is because Nine’s path in the story centres around the Dark Times & Vampires as introduced into the lore in SoD.
The Runaway Bride is because the Racnoss are cursed with mortality by the Kotturuh during the Dark Times… hence, TLV has made it that the Empress’ fleeing & attempts to raise her young in TRB a result of the actions of the Kotturuh.

The other four haven’t yet been unveiled in meaning – but I would suspect that Planet of the Daleks’ ending leaving an army buried on Spiridon might perhaps be due an exploration again… And we know Fenric was kicking around in the Dark Times…

    • Dalek z

      October 6th, 2020 - 3:47pm

If a newbie who hasn’t seen them buys it then fine okay I get that, but as a long time fan I just can’t see how these stories are really all related to this Timelord victorious thing anyway.
Seems like some major retrofitting for some old stories to try and connect them to this new thing to sell a new set of discs. Just like when people were saying “Genisis or Rememberance of the Daleks” were the start of the time war when that’s not the case.
I’m the same fan who won’t buy two action figures just because one has glasses and one doesn’t ect. For the newbies fine grab a copy and enjoy, just remember these old stories have nothing to do with this new thing.

It always makes me laugh boo boo when people cry “cash grab” they seem to forget that that is the sole purpose of merchandising! I’m not going to get it but I’m sure others will be happy with it.

    • Gareth Pugh

      October 6th, 2020 - 6:11pm

Dalek z, you say ‘not falling for it’ but I suspect you are the kind of fan (like many) who has these stories on BluRay or DVD already – in which case, I’m pretty sure it’s not you (or me) they have in mind as their target buyer. This, I imagine, is strategically aimed at newer fans who are interested in discovering a bit of the history, or are following a lot of the TLV elements, and if just a few completists pick up a copy at the edges, they won’t object. But this is why companies pay consultancies and market research agencies (a world I work in) to develop so-called ‘Segmentation Models’ – to define the different types of audiences they have, what appeals to them and drives them – and will develop different product lines to cover many of them. They also have ‘Consumer Journey Maps’ – which help them crack in some depth the ‘journeys’ fans go on, by age and / or stage, and will often brainstorm product ranges to address different people at different elements of that. Remember the old ‘DVD Files’ partwork with vanilla no-frills DVDs of (most) stories? That’s a good example of something that will have been specifically developed for the ‘just starting out’ and/or younger fan wanting to take the first steps into the depth of the show’s history beyond the latest seasons on TV. Whereas The Complete History, with all its depth, will have been developed for the fan much deeper in to their interest in the show’s history. In short- not every product is aimed at every fan, so I don’t think this time BBC Studios were expecting you or to ‘fall for it’. Or necessarily buy it.

I don’t buy bluray as I have bought all the stories first on vhs then DVD. But I don’t see any problem with this release. It’s not a release for me but for fans who don’t have all the stories. If you are a compeletionist then that’s your problem for wanting everything that gets released. You really don’t have to buy them. Not a cash grab. Not cynical marketing. Just merchandise. I won’t be buying it but I’ve just shown it to a niece and she’s already asking for it for her birthday. And that to me is the target market. Younger fans.

As i have said before forums etc are full of collectors and long term fans who live and breath the show and forget there are the more casual and intrigued buyers out that and this release is probably aimed at them.
