The Tenth Planet 4th Episode to be Animated
The Tenth Planet 4th Episode to be Animated
From the official site www.doctorwho.tv
The First Doctor’s final adventure The Tenth Planet is to have its lost fourth episode animated for DVD release, doctorwho.tv can exclusively reveal.
Teased yesterday at the Gallifrey One convention by Dan Hall, commissioning editor of the classic Doctor Who DVD range, The Tenth Planet sees both the introduction of the menacing, dead-eyed Cybermen, and the departure of the First Doctor, William Hartnell. The final episode has been missing from the BBC Archives since the mid-1970s, and will be reconstructed using the same Thetamation process used to recreate The Reign of Terror episodes 4 and 5.
Dan Hall said: “It’s a real thrill to be bringing such an iconic Doctor Who episode back to life. Without the events established in The Tenth Planet episode 4, there would be no Doctor Who as we know it!”
The release date is currently scheduled for late 2013.

March 24th, 2013 - 9:18amGordon I hope that all the missing and incomplete stories get released on dvd in animated form someday.
The Greater Intelligence
February 23rd, 2013 - 3:56pmThe other day I found a video that Ian Levine did. It was a fully animated version of Mission To The Unknown. It’s 2-parts, Part 1: 11 Minutes; Part 2: 12.5 Minutes. Very cool and very good for anyone who wants to see the epsode for more than an audiobook on your shelf. Incredible animation and only an extra 23 minutes out of your life.

February 23rd, 2013 - 4:16pmI didn’t like it TBH.
THE ERGON
February 23rd, 2013 - 3:12pmHope they make a better job of it,than ‘The reign of terror’. I was very disappointed and in my opinion was a real step down from ‘The invasion’ and that was nigh on 7 years ago. Cosgrove hall did it better.
gordon
February 25th, 2013 - 3:12amwhat people don’t realise Cosgrove hall had 5 times the budget of what reign of terror had and many times the experience of thetamation. this was their first official release you can’t expect them to be perfect first time.

February 18th, 2013 - 6:06pmam i the only one who wants a “celestial toymaker” animated rerelease?
gordon
February 19th, 2013 - 1:58pmSadly the budget avalable for animation is currently limited to 2 per story
The Greater Intelligence
February 23rd, 2013 - 3:59pmGordan, do you think if they found another episode of The Wheel In Space they would animate the last three parts, or wait until only two parts remain to be found?
gordon
February 25th, 2013 - 3:18amThat would still be out of their budget and would probably be released in some sort of recon
The Greater Intelligence
February 25th, 2013 - 2:23pmI was afraid of that, it’s such a great story.
2doctors2000
February 17th, 2013 - 3:50pmSounds nice. I’m sure some one out there has not realised they have a tape recording of the real thing. Pains me when I think of that.
Anonymous
February 17th, 2013 - 3:52pmThere won’t be any tape recordings. Videotape was incredibly expensive, so it will be on film if it is still out there.
Some bloke
February 19th, 2013 - 1:23pmwhat makes you think that anyways 2doctors2000?
Anonymous
February 17th, 2013 - 1:20pmThe interesting thing about this is, once they have animated a character once, they can reuse them later on. While this doesn’t really help that much with this story (as there is only one episode and the only character from The Reign of Terror there is the First Doctor) but it starts to build up what they have in their collections.
For instance, now they will have Ben and Polly animated which makes it easier for them to animate something like The Underwater Menace or The Moonbase as they have already got the basic animations prepared.

February 17th, 2013 - 5:26pmalso with William hartnell animated there is a possibility of the crusade as well
Anonymous
February 17th, 2013 - 5:55pmNot just Hartnell’s Doctor, they have Ian and Barbara as well from The Reign of Terror.
Ross Campbell
February 17th, 2013 - 11:48amThank god for this wonderful news bill’s last adventure released in time of the 50 years since he walked into a junkyard coughing and saying his first line ‘what are you doing here?’

February 17th, 2013 - 6:14amThis is great news, can’t wait for this release! ! !
John Smith
February 18th, 2013 - 8:02amTook the words right out of my mouth!
King Ninja
February 16th, 2013 - 8:00pmThis is exactly what I’d hoped for! Hopefully they can animate ‘Moonbase’ and ‘Wheel In Space’ as well!
Anonymous
February 17th, 2013 - 11:58amThe Wheel in Space isn’t feasible with the current DVD budget, they can only afford to do two episodes a go now.
However, that does mean The Moonbase is able to be animated should they choose to go through with that so you might be in luck there.
josh smith
February 18th, 2013 - 5:53pmno they only animate 6 parter episers with 2 missing or 4 parter episdes with 1 missing
classic who is cool
February 16th, 2013 - 3:59pmI Think this is really cool, and will defo be getting it when it comes out !

February 16th, 2013 - 3:02pmjust ice warriors and underwater menace animations left to announce for this year then i think i am sorted for DVDs this year!

February 16th, 2013 - 12:16pmWhat better time than the 50th year
DOCTOR WHO ONE
February 16th, 2013 - 3:12pmIndeed 🙂
hobbit dalek
February 16th, 2013 - 11:42ami hope ice warriors get the same treatment
josh smith
February 16th, 2013 - 12:14pmno i dont i hope ice worris gets a reconstruction
Some bloke
February 16th, 2013 - 12:17pm@josh smith, it will have the reconstructions from the vhs release, sadly they are only about 5 minutes long each. Considering ice warriors is set for a release before tenth planet and we have just heard about the tenth planet animation, i reckon they will make a full reconstruction of both missing episodes of ice warriors, which is fine by me! 🙂
gordon
February 16th, 2013 - 12:52pmOnly thing that has been confirmed for it is the VHS recon will be included and Steve Roberts of the restoration team described it as an extra. People seem to have jumped to the conclusion that its not getting animated. I hear tenth planet will contain the VHS recon its a good possibility that its getting animated.
josh smith
February 16th, 2013 - 2:42pmoh brill i think reconstructions are more vivid than animations
TheIrishGallifreyan
February 16th, 2013 - 3:05pmthere has to be some reason why the ice warriors dvd was pushed back 4 months from April to August. maybe they have decided to do a last minute animation or they have actually found the two lost episodes. one can only hope. 🙂 🙂
gordon
February 16th, 2013 - 3:35pmDoubt it would be a last minute decision to animate ice warriors. Budgets are calculated very early on and
its been in production for almost 2 years. Think
Its either animation has taken longer than expected or the animation of reign took longer than expected. They also could have found the eps but its quite unlikely in my opinion
drjakeyoung
February 16th, 2013 - 3:41pmgordon, when they have released every episode, and we have brought them all, if they release a complete season box set for each classic season, would you but it?
drjakeyoung
February 16th, 2013 - 3:41pmi mean buy it
RORY DOCTOR RIVER POND
February 16th, 2013 - 11:38amare they going to animate important episodes? good idea. i think they should do that with SJA episodes from series 5 that were never produced.
Some bloke
February 16th, 2013 - 11:43amwat are you on about?
booboo
February 16th, 2013 - 11:48amThere are 3 SJA episodes that sadly were never made, i doubt they ever will be in any form (well wizards and aliens used a version of one i think)
Some bloke
February 16th, 2013 - 12:01pmi understand that booboo, but i dont understand what he means when he says ‘are they going to animate important episodes?’ It’s not a case of whats important, but a case of whats feasible, what the fans want and what’s important to the fans, and besides, dan hall has nothing to do with the SJA. And yes booboo your partly right. In series 2 of Wizards vs. Aliens, they will use the SJA story ‘The Thirteenth floor’ as it was never made. Its a good series
booboo
February 16th, 2013 - 12:05pmsome posters here wont distinguish the difference and it may seem important to them as a fan of SJA
It will never happen though
Some bloke
February 16th, 2013 - 12:09pmSorry to RORY DOCTOR RIVER POND, no offence.
I like the little comment at the end there booboo, very funny LOL
auton101
February 17th, 2013 - 6:05pmSJA isn’t as important as the classic who stories, if anything they should do it in comics.
Judooning
February 16th, 2013 - 11:22amBrilliant news! Im aiming to get all the classics on DVD so this will be fantastic.
auton101
February 16th, 2013 - 11:12amim happy they are animating it, its such a brilliant story. one of bill hartnells greats
Tim M
February 17th, 2013 - 11:09am‘The Tenth Planet’ is an IMPORTANT story but I don’t feel it ranks as one of Hartnells’ best in all honesty. He makes minimal impact in the first two episodes, doesn’t appear at all in the third, and only improves in the fourth (which is sadly missing). It seemed around this time that the writers or producers didn’t write out the main characters that well and gave several characters a poor send off. Dodo in ‘The War Machines’ is given a less than satisfactory departure, and in ‘The Faceless Ones’ Ben and Polly are written out terribly.
auton101
February 17th, 2013 - 6:03pmwell i still think its an important story, although William isn’t in it as much because the doctors ill because his regeneration is coming on, i still think its a brilliant story. not the best storyline but it still beats the storylines from the new series
space1999
February 16th, 2013 - 10:44amit might come out in 2014
Some bloke
February 16th, 2013 - 10:51amwell lets hope it’s not 2014!!
gordon
February 16th, 2013 - 11:46amI’m sure it will be this year
josh smith
February 16th, 2013 - 11:55amno the line up for this year is already done so yes it will be 2014 other wise there will run out of episdoes next year
i hate animations! reconstructions are much better and i hope the yhave the original regeniration not a bad animated
Some bloke
February 16th, 2013 - 12:04pmnot completely, there’s still october! last year we got claws of axos (SE) and ambassadors of death in october. And you never know, they may make it a special release for the 50th!
gordon
February 16th, 2013 - 12:05pmNo the line up lsnt done for this year. The line up was only revealed till September. The expectation was to have every existing episode released by November 2013 and 10 planet was announced as a late 2013 release
josh smith
February 16th, 2013 - 12:09pmok i have ambasidors of death i love it
pathdw98
February 17th, 2013 - 3:11amI think this will be October release because I do actually think they will do an unearthly child special edition for the 50th maybe
Tim M
February 17th, 2013 - 11:13amI reckon it might see ‘The Underwater Menace’ part 2 on DVD next year. Especially if they intend to animate parts 1 and 4 to complete the story. I’d rather wait in all honesty and have a complete animated/live action ‘The Underwater Menace’. Plus hopefully they would do the same with ‘The Moonbase’ parts 1 and 3.
space1999
February 16th, 2013 - 10:30amyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Trenzalore 64
February 16th, 2013 - 10:24amHmmmmm…… I just hope the end result is a fitting tribute to the first doctor.
Some bloke
February 16th, 2013 - 10:10amThis is so disappointing, how will they include the surviving footage of the regeneration, they better not animate that!!!! And to cap it off, it’s being made by the guys who did the reign of terror. That was ok, but i hated the fact that they used publicity shots as reference material, the fact that every time we saw someone speaking, it had to be a close up, face on shot, and the fact that quite a lot of the time there was a different shot per word!! I wish they had done reconstruction, like they had on the vhs tape. much prefer that.
Some bloke
February 16th, 2013 - 10:11amhopefully the reconstruction from the vhs will be a special feature on this release
gordon
February 16th, 2013 - 11:09amAt least they will have had feedback on the animation so they’ll be able to make any changes for things that wasn’t popular. People frget reign was the first release from this company and they will gain experience by doing more
Some bloke
February 16th, 2013 - 11:15amI hope your right gordon, i dont want it to stick out like a sore thumbs, as did reign of terror. Judging by the several images of the doctorwho.tv website, it looks quite promising, especially the ones of Dr. Barclay!!
Simon Ashley
February 16th, 2013 - 9:48amI will buy the DVD when it comes out. At my local HMV store, too support it.
