The Tenth Planet 4th Episode to be Animated

The Tenth Planet 4th Episode to be Animated

From the official site www.doctorwho.tv

The First Doctor’s final adventure The Tenth Planet is to have its lost fourth episode animated for DVD release, doctorwho.tv can exclusively reveal.

Teased yesterday at the Gallifrey One convention by Dan Hall, commissioning editor of the classic Doctor Who DVD range, The Tenth Planet sees both the introduction of the menacing, dead-eyed Cybermen, and the departure of the First Doctor, William Hartnell. The final episode has been missing from the BBC Archives since the mid-1970s, and will be reconstructed using the same Thetamation process used to recreate The Reign of Terror episodes 4 and 5.

Dan Hall said: “It’s a real thrill to be bringing such an iconic Doctor Who episode back to life. Without the events established in The Tenth Planet episode 4, there would be no Doctor Who as we know it!”

The release date is currently scheduled for late 2013.

The other day I found a video that Ian Levine did. It was a fully animated version of Mission To The Unknown. It’s 2-parts, Part 1: 11 Minutes; Part 2: 12.5 Minutes. Very cool and very good for anyone who wants to see the epsode for more than an audiobook on your shelf. Incredible animation and only an extra 23 minutes out of your life.

Hope they make a better job of it,than ‘The reign of terror’. I was very disappointed and in my opinion was a real step down from ‘The invasion’ and that was nigh on 7 years ago. Cosgrove hall did it better.

what people don’t realise Cosgrove hall had 5 times the budget of what reign of terror had and many times the experience of thetamation. this was their first official release you can’t expect them to be perfect first time.

Gordan, do you think if they found another episode of The Wheel In Space they would animate the last three parts, or wait until only two parts remain to be found?

    • gordon

      February 25th, 2013 - 3:18am

That would still be out of their budget and would probably be released in some sort of recon

Sounds nice. I’m sure some one out there has not realised they have a tape recording of the real thing. Pains me when I think of that.

There won’t be any tape recordings. Videotape was incredibly expensive, so it will be on film if it is still out there.

The interesting thing about this is, once they have animated a character once, they can reuse them later on. While this doesn’t really help that much with this story (as there is only one episode and the only character from The Reign of Terror there is the First Doctor) but it starts to build up what they have in their collections.

For instance, now they will have Ben and Polly animated which makes it easier for them to animate something like The Underwater Menace or The Moonbase as they have already got the basic animations prepared.

The Wheel in Space isn’t feasible with the current DVD budget, they can only afford to do two episodes a go now.

However, that does mean The Moonbase is able to be animated should they choose to go through with that so you might be in luck there.

      February 16th, 2013 - 12:17pm

@josh smith, it will have the reconstructions from the vhs release, sadly they are only about 5 minutes long each. Considering ice warriors is set for a release before tenth planet and we have just heard about the tenth planet animation, i reckon they will make a full reconstruction of both missing episodes of ice warriors, which is fine by me! 🙂

    • gordon

      February 16th, 2013 - 12:52pm

Only thing that has been confirmed for it is the VHS recon will be included and Steve Roberts of the restoration team described it as an extra. People seem to have jumped to the conclusion that its not getting animated. I hear tenth planet will contain the VHS recon its a good possibility that its getting animated.

      February 16th, 2013 - 3:05pm

there has to be some reason why the ice warriors dvd was pushed back 4 months from April to August. maybe they have decided to do a last minute animation or they have actually found the two lost episodes. one can only hope. 🙂 🙂

    • gordon

      February 16th, 2013 - 3:35pm

Doubt it would be a last minute decision to animate ice warriors. Budgets are calculated very early on and
its been in production for almost 2 years. Think
Its either animation has taken longer than expected or the animation of reign took longer than expected. They also could have found the eps but its quite unlikely in my opinion

There are 3 SJA episodes that sadly were never made, i doubt they ever will be in any form (well wizards and aliens used a version of one i think)

    • Some bloke

      February 16th, 2013 - 12:01pm

i understand that booboo, but i dont understand what he means when he says ‘are they going to animate important episodes?’ It’s not a case of whats important, but a case of whats feasible, what the fans want and what’s important to the fans, and besides, dan hall has nothing to do with the SJA. And yes booboo your partly right. In series 2 of Wizards vs. Aliens, they will use the SJA story ‘The Thirteenth floor’ as it was never made. Its a good series

    • booboo

      February 16th, 2013 - 12:05pm

‘The Tenth Planet’ is an IMPORTANT story but I don’t feel it ranks as one of Hartnells’ best in all honesty. He makes minimal impact in the first two episodes, doesn’t appear at all in the third, and only improves in the fourth (which is sadly missing). It seemed around this time that the writers or producers didn’t write out the main characters that well and gave several characters a poor send off. Dodo in ‘The War Machines’ is given a less than satisfactory departure, and in ‘The Faceless Ones’ Ben and Polly are written out terribly.

well i still think its an important story, although William isn’t in it as much because the doctors ill because his regeneration is coming on, i still think its a brilliant story. not the best storyline but it still beats the storylines from the new series

I reckon it might see ‘The Underwater Menace’ part 2 on DVD next year. Especially if they intend to animate parts 1 and 4 to complete the story. I’d rather wait in all honesty and have a complete animated/live action ‘The Underwater Menace’. Plus hopefully they would do the same with ‘The Moonbase’ parts 1 and 3.

This is so disappointing, how will they include the surviving footage of the regeneration, they better not animate that!!!! And to cap it off, it’s being made by the guys who did the reign of terror. That was ok, but i hated the fact that they used publicity shots as reference material, the fact that every time we saw someone speaking, it had to be a close up, face on shot, and the fact that quite a lot of the time there was a different shot per word!! I wish they had done reconstruction, like they had on the vhs tape. much prefer that.

At least they will have had feedback on the animation so they’ll be able to make any changes for things that wasn’t popular. People frget reign was the first release from this company and they will gain experience by doing more
