Patrick Troughton stars in this recreation of a lost classic from 1966.

The TARDIS brings the Doctor, Polly and Ben to a colony on the swamp planet of Vulcan. Soon after arriving, the Doctor witnesses a brutal murder.

Meanwhile, in another part of the colony an ancient crashed space capsule has been discovered in the swamps. The colony’s misguided chief scientist opens the capsule and discovers a group of strange metal ‘creatures’ inside. The creatures appear to be long dead. The Doctor calls the metal creatures ‘Daleks’ and claims that they are incredibly dangerous.

‘Power of the Daleks’ was the first Doctor Who story to star Patrick Troughton as the Doctor – broadcast between November and December 1966. Sadly, none of the six original broadcast episodes of ‘Power of the Daleks’ any longer exist in the BBC Film Archives. However, complete audio recordings of the lost episodes have survived in the hands of private collectors. And it is these audio recordings that are used as the basis for this special animated production of the programme. Now in a brand new edition and brought to you in glorious black and white…

Includes exciting new special features:
• Two new documentaries about Power of the Daleks
• 1993 BBC audio version of The Power of the Daleks narrated by Tom Baker
• Raw incidental music
• Photogrammetry Featurette
• Whicker’s World – I Don’t Like My Monsters to Have Oedipus Complexes
• Daleks – The Early Years: A 1992 documentary presented by Peter Davison
• Robin Hood – 1953 Episode: Patrick Troughton’s earliest surviving TV appearance
• BBC archive footage from BBC regional news, BBC Breakfast, Blue Peter and Newsnight
• Previously unreleased animation trailers and animatics

Additional bonus material:
• Audio commentaries by Anneke Wills on each episode
• Animation test footage
• Photo Gallery, including previously unreleased and rediscovered full colour on-set photos from 1966.
• Servants & Masters – The Making of The Power of the Daleks
• Doctor Who – The Highlanders

This special edition is worth it for the special features alone and it also has updated animation so its definitely worth it

Right so I understand this includes just a Black and White version, is it updated and improved compared to the standard release or just the same as what was originally included? Thanks 🙂

I own the previously released steelbook and I’m very excited about this Special Edition release, the extras look fantastic.

I’m not too bothered that this release doesn’t include the colour version as I already have it on the steelbook.

Brilliant – much better cover artwork, looking forward to the enhancements to the animation, plus the new extras, especially the 1993 BBC audio version of The Power of the Daleks narrated by Tom Baker. I hope the 1993 BBC audio version of Fury from the Deep narrated by Tom Baker is on the new Fury from the Deep animation release. Eagerly anticipating the Evil of the Daleks and Abominable Snowmen animations eventually!

Perfect, brilliant, only just watched old version for 2nd time. First viewing awesome, second less so. Fresh animation for such a poignant story is critical.

However, I would rather pay a lot more and get the Power: Reimagined stage version too. That was brilliant. Cannot believe that is not here.

I have absolutely no insider information, but I would think that “The Highlanders” is probably just a cut-down recon. The animation team have said that animating it in full is possible, but there was too much tartan.

But the thing to remember is that the team have said that it is possible. I’m just not sure that we are getting it right now.

    (Hope I’m wrong though!)

Are we going to have as many releases of Power of the Daleks as we did with Spearhead from Space. As a long standing Doctor Who fan who bought all the dvds, then again all the special editions, then some of the blu rays this is taking the proverbial. I’d prefer an animated web of fear to a re-release of power of the daleks even if they’ve improved the animation. Really can’t afford this. Might wait until they release all of these again in 4k UHD!!!

I’m talking about this one as David seems unhappy it’s been released for only the second time

    • Gordon

      April 28th, 2020 - 10:41pm

It’s only had a digital release with dvd/steelbook. It’s a long way off from spearhead Levels. It’s not an either or option. Just because they did a power se it doesn’t mean that a web se is sacrificed. If they didn’t animate power it wouldn’t mean that web would get the animation treatment instead. They are unlikely to animate web while they believe there is a chance of web 3 turning up. It’s not like it’s the only thing that is being worked on. According to Patrick mulkern from the radio times another animation is also in the pipeline as he says on twitter: A fine addition in #PatrickTroughton’s centenary year, an updated Power to join The Faceless Ones, Fury from the Deep and a fourth favourite still TBA. (Not sure if that will be this year but it’s in the pipeline.)

It would suggest to me this updated power is an additional animation alongside new animations

    • Anonymous

      April 29th, 2020 - 2:01am

It sounds additional as it’s only two months away whereas fury still doesn’t have a date. In a way I’m hoping for a full reconstruction of Highlanders on this and I’m wavering more towards abominable for the next release.

    • Anonymous

      April 29th, 2020 - 2:34am

Imagine if web had been announced. Think of all the complaining that would be going on!

  • Gordon

    April 28th, 2020 - 3:43pm

Such a good package we are getting. A reworked animation, 2 new documentaries the tom Baker naration wickers world and whatever the highlanders is. I doubt it’s a trailer for an animation as the press release doesn’t say coming soon like the fury trailer on the faceless disc and it goes against what they have been doing with the past couple of releases with a press release and trailer and the dvd/blu ray being put up at the time of the announcement. Best hope a reconstruction of some sort. worst hope it’s just the lost in time clips.

    From Charles norton:

The animation hasn’t just been tweaked. It’s been very extensively revised. Big ground up re-build. Huge job. Every shot has been re-composited. Many sections have been re-animated from scratch. In fact, the entire first third of episode 1 has essentially been redone completely anew. That part’s unrecognisable now. It’ll be a good quarter of an hour in before you’ll see any shots that are even close to how they used to look. It’s still limited animation of course, made with limited resources. However, it should be twenty times better than it was. It should feel like a new programme and will sit far more comfortably alongside the other Troughton animations we have done since. It’s essentially what we set out to do back in 2016, on the original rush-release, but were unable to complete in the time. We’ve gone in and fixed all the things (well, most of them) that have niggled us since 2016. It’s not a completely new animation – not a completely fresh-start – in that we’ve not scrapped all the original work. There’s still lots of the original in there, but it is still a massive revision.

As for the special features, I’m not sure if it’s made clear in the press release, but the reconstruction is a completely new one, made by Derek Handley. Additionally, all the surviving footage has been newly restored. There’s a little bit more of it now too! Oh, and ‘Whicker’s World’ is from a new 2K scan of the original film negs.

The US colourisation will not be on this release, no. It wasn’t really something that was ever originally intended to have a UK release and none of us on the team had any involvement in it. It’s probably best viewed in the same way as the colourised versions of films like ‘Casablanca’ and ‘Way Out West’. They’re out there for those wish to seek them out, but it’s not really representative of how the film-makers originally intended these things to be seen.

      April 28th, 2020 - 4:34pm

Brilliant news. Will definitely buy it now. I suppose Highlanders could be a full reconstruction if plans to animate it have fallen through. It makes a sort of sense to put it on another story as I image there would be outcry if they tried to release it separately. Pure speculation though. Just have to wait and see. Oh, and thanks for the animation info Gordon. Much appreciated.

Those extras alone are more than an incentive to buy for me and just rounds things off nicely until the eventual Blu-ray season 4 boxset. This DVD will suffice and suits that part of my collection and is the reason not to buy the Blu-Ray version twice, no matter how long i need to wait for that.

The animations that are available at release will be included in the collection sets, it’s just not clear what versions they would include (given that the 60s seasons are already incredibly long so including several versions of these stories may be a bit too much, less of a problem with something like Season 26 where there’s only 14 episodes, but three versions of 40+ episodes may be too much for one set).

      April 28th, 2020 - 1:34pm

I’m happy if they just include the B&W versions in the Season sets if they have been animated with their Special Features.

Keep the colour version exclusive for those who bought the original release.

I’m not buying anything except for the Season Sets now as don’t have the budget for everything these days.

Kind of hope that they have improved the animation as a test before they start work on Evil.
