Patrick Troughton stars in this recreation of a lost classic from 1966.

The TARDIS brings the Doctor, Polly and Ben to a colony on the swamp planet of Vulcan. Soon after arriving, the Doctor witnesses a brutal murder.

Meanwhile, in another part of the colony an ancient crashed space capsule has been discovered in the swamps. The colony’s misguided chief scientist opens the capsule and discovers a group of strange metal ‘creatures’ inside. The creatures appear to be long dead. The Doctor calls the metal creatures ‘Daleks’ and claims that they are incredibly dangerous.

‘Power of the Daleks’ was the first Doctor Who story to star Patrick Troughton as the Doctor – broadcast between November and December 1966. Sadly, none of the six original broadcast episodes of ‘Power of the Daleks’ any longer exist in the BBC Film Archives. However, complete audio recordings of the lost episodes have survived in the hands of private collectors. And it is these audio recordings that are used as the basis for this special animated production of the programme. Now in a brand new edition and brought to you in glorious black and white…

Includes exciting new special features:
• Two new documentaries about Power of the Daleks
• 1993 BBC audio version of The Power of the Daleks narrated by Tom Baker
• Raw incidental music
• Photogrammetry Featurette
• Whicker’s World – I Don’t Like My Monsters to Have Oedipus Complexes
• Daleks – The Early Years: A 1992 documentary presented by Peter Davison
• Robin Hood – 1953 Episode: Patrick Troughton’s earliest surviving TV appearance
• BBC archive footage from BBC regional news, BBC Breakfast, Blue Peter and Newsnight
• Previously unreleased animation trailers and animatics

Additional bonus material:
• Audio commentaries by Anneke Wills on each episode
• Animation test footage
• Photo Gallery, including previously unreleased and rediscovered full colour on-set photos from 1966.
• Servants & Masters – The Making of The Power of the Daleks
• Doctor Who – The Highlanders

Much improved animation giving the overall look and feel more natural with the facial expressions of Lesterson and the Dr greatly improved so much so they stand out from the other characters but in a good way.
The extras are fascinating especially for me the regional south today news reel as it’s my region.
    A very worthy addition.

Is this a completely different animation from the previous Bluray, and anyone know any details of the Highlanders on this release?

Some of the scenes are revised, there is also an Easter Egg of the omitted/deleted scene of the Doctor doing a jig. No Highlanders that I can see on the Menus (there are 3 discs to get through though).

Revised animation for some sense plus a couple of Easter Eggs including the omitted scene of the Doctor doing a jig. No Highlanders I’m afraid Brian.

With the steelbook I’m Keeping the colour Blu ray disc with the mp3cd recon but swap out the other 3 discs with the new discs. Means I’ve got the old Colour animation, new animation the mp3cd recon the new telesnap recon and the 1993 bbc cassette all in the same place

Thanks for taking the time to get in touch with the team.
We always love to hear from dedicated fans of the Doctor Who series. At this time, there are unfortunately no plans for a Steelbook edition of the upcoming Power of the Daleks release.

    • Doctor Blu

      May 24th, 2020 - 9:35am

I expect a steelbook will be released at some point. No doubt also featuring a colour animated version of the updated animation. That way the BBC get the fans to buy yet another version of ‘The Power of the Daleks’. The colour version exclusive to only the steelbook maybe?

    • Gordon

      May 24th, 2020 - 10:56am

From Richard Bignell: This is not a story that is being completely reanimated from scratch, so if you were going to do a colour version, you’d need to do it all in post, just as the BBC America colourisation on the original was – and given that the team pretty much hated what had been done in that regard, I can’t imagine that it’s something that they would have been keen to repeat.

Is it safe to assume that these episodes getting standalone releases will eventually be included in the current ongoing blu-ray collection series and just wait until then? I’m not collecting everything Who I Just want to have every possible episode available on a physical disc and not have two copies of it.

This looks great. Hoping the Whicker’s World episode is complete. There’s a version of it on YouTube but the quality is not the best. And the inclusion of “Daleks :The Early Years” means stand-alone episodes of “Master Plan” and “Evil” on Blu-ray for the first time. Can’t wait for this.

Ooh, a new reconstruction, that’s nice. The recon on the previous release was somewhat lacking, I though. They hadn’t even incorporated the existing clips into it.

And that Highlanders reference is tempting, but probably a recon. Which would still be nice to have, it’s actually harder to find a good Highlanders recon than you might expect.

      April 28th, 2020 - 11:40pm

As mentioned on the dvd thread:

      From Charles norton:

The animation hasn’t just been tweaked. It’s been very extensively revised. Big ground up re-build. Huge job. Every shot has been re-composited. Many sections have been re-animated from scratch. In fact, the entire first third of episode 1 has essentially been redone completely anew. That part’s unrecognisable now. It’ll be a good quarter of an hour in before you’ll see any shots that are even close to how they used to look. It’s still limited animation of course, made with limited resources. However, it should be twenty times better than it was. It should feel like a new programme and will sit far more comfortably alongside the other Troughton animations we have done since. It’s essentially what we set out to do back in 2016, on the original rush-release, but were unable to complete in the time. We’ve gone in and fixed all the things (well, most of them) that have niggled us since 2016. It’s not a completely new animation – not a completely fresh-start – in that we’ve not scrapped all the original work. There’s still lots of the original in there, but it is still a massive revision.

As for the special features, I’m not sure if it’s made clear in the press release, but the reconstruction is a completely new one, made by Derek Handley. Additionally, all the surviving footage has been newly restored. There’s a little bit more of it now too! Oh, and ‘Whicker’s World’ is from a new 2K scan of the original film negs.

The US colourisation will not be on this release, no. It wasn’t really something that was ever originally intended to have a UK release and none of us on the team had any involvement in it. It’s probably best viewed in the same way as the colourised versions of films like ‘Casablanca’ and ‘Way Out West’. They’re out there for those wish to seek them out, but it’s not really representative of how the film-makers originally intended these things to be seen.

    • The Loiterer

      April 29th, 2020 - 8:11pm

Robert, the standard release was only available in Aus and NZ. It didn’t have the booklet, but was significantly cheaper than the UK Steelbook even when you added UK delivery. Mine worked out at around £8.

I’m wondering if it didn’t get a standard UK release because the Steelbook took a while to sell out, possibly because it was only announced after most people had just bought the DVD (which was included with the Steelbook again). They wisely went for simultaneous releases for the next animation.
