First Regeneration Exclusive Animated Clip
The First Regeneration – Exclusive Animated Clip
From www.doctorwho.tv…
Hot on the heels of our recent announcement, that the lost The Tenth Planet episode four was to be animated, doctorwho.tv brings you an online exclusive – a clip of the First Doctor’s animated regeneration sequence.
Currently in production at Planet 55 Studios, the fourth episode of The Tenth Planet was lost in the 1970s, barring a very short clip of the regeneration itself. Head of Studio, Austen Atkinson, said “We are about to finish two years of development and production work on the project – the first scene was animated all the way back in 2011! You have no idea how hard it was to keep that secret!”
With the threat of the Cybermen foiled, Polly and Ben find the Doctor has beaten them to the TARDIS and closed the doors. As they hammer on the door, the controls operate of their own accord and the central column begins to rise and fall….
Chris Chapman, Lead Animator on this sequence, said “We knew that we had to throw everything at this scene and in fact the whole story is historic, with the first appearance of the Cybermen, so we really worked very hard on it. It was a real pleasure. It has definitely made me a fan of Doctor Who.”
An audience of fans in Australia were recently given a preview of the scene. The response from the fans was emotional and hugely appreciative, with Paul Deuis, President of the Australian Doctor Who fan club admitting, “I had tears in my eyes – what a moment. The animation is amazing.”
See the surviving clip of the the First Doctor’s regeneration as a comparison, or read about the forthcoming release of The Ice Warriors, that also features newly animated episodes.
The Tenth Planet is a Pup Ltd / Planet 55 Studios Co-Production for BBC Worldwide, and will be released on DVD in late 2013.

March 7th, 2013 - 5:58ami like the idea of having every missing episode being animated and being broadcast on tv as a separate show, even though that is impossible at the moment with the way broadcasting companies release what they release i think the idea. Since that is not the case the only way we can see missing episodes being released in this form is from DVD Releases linked with Surviving Episodes. i also think that this form of doing things will only work if the ratio between Surviving Episodes and Missing is 50-50 too.
Lachlan
March 7th, 2013 - 6:05amthe idea is a good one* also what i mean about the 50-50 thing is that animation at the moment is working well with releases like “The Reign of Terror” is because there are more Surviving Episodes then Missing, now i for one think even if the BBC could boost the budget to 3 they might not bother with stories like “The Celestial Toymaker” and so forth because of how they released “Galaxy 4” and because there might not be enough incentive to buy a release which only has one surviving episode.

March 7th, 2013 - 6:07amhaving said that though Underwater Menace is bound to get released with Animation due to the majority of people i think wishing for that and for releases like the Moonbase and The Crusade to be released the same way. It would be great to have a DVD Release of the Crusade to finish off Season 2 😀

April 27th, 2013 - 10:51amthe moonbase is a maybe but i hope it comes out this year or next

March 6th, 2013 - 11:15pmGoing by the footage I think they have improved over reign. I don’t really see an issue with the regeneration being animated as both versions are on the disc. Btw saw pictures of the animated cybermen in the new dwm and I think they look lovely

March 7th, 2013 - 6:19ami do that means im cant watch the animation now
Some bloke
March 7th, 2013 - 8:14ami agree with gordon, the animation looks LOVELY, even though they seem to have traced it over the original, but yes hopefully this is a good indication that they have improved. The main thing i didnt like about reign, was the fact that when we saw the characters talking, the face was straight forward directly looking out the screen and the fact that they used that publicity image of hartnells face from celestial toymaker for his parts.

March 6th, 2013 - 10:25pmThis is amazing. A great improvement on the Regin of Terror.

March 6th, 2013 - 6:38pmthat is GORGEOUS!!! Cant wait for the rest. This is a vast improvement since ‘reign’, even though that was pretty much traced over the original footage but still looks great
Joe
March 6th, 2013 - 6:29pmI don’t know what to make of the animated regeneration I can’t tell if it’s good or bad
Can anyone tell me if mission to the unknown is outside this company’s budget
josh smith
March 6th, 2013 - 7:43pmyes and no
depends if they can bulk it up with enough extras as its noly 1 episode but i sppose if they put underater menace as an extra it would be good enough along with the usaly extras
Anonymous
March 6th, 2013 - 8:06pmIt’s not outside their budget, but BBC Worldwide won’t let them as they don’t reckon it would sell well enough.
josh smith
March 6th, 2013 - 8:11pmit is they need a min of 2 episodes to make a dvd relese and mabye a recon + a animation would be best
gordon
March 6th, 2013 - 11:24pmThe main problem with mission to the unknown is that it is only 1 episode long which isn’t long enough to be a main feature release and also putting it as an animated extra on another story would be too expensive as the budget for extras are quite small.
gordon
March 7th, 2013 - 7:38amI don’t really see how that would be a waste of money. The fan base is strong enough and enough people want to see the episode that they would break even even if I don’t agree with it being released on there

March 6th, 2013 - 5:45pmIt certainly looks good, but aside from what we’ll be seeing this year with Ice Warriors, tenth planet, and Reign of Terror already, i’m a bit ‘on the fence’ with any further animations – especially for stories like Evil of the Daleks which would require 6 animated episodes – not sure it’s a route i’d like to see happen, but i’m sure i’m in the minority there. And only Underwater Menace left to be announced – I’m going to take a guess that it’ll be the final release of the year with 2 episodes animated – any other thoughts?
josh smith
March 6th, 2013 - 5:56pmits not going to be released this year
matparks08
March 6th, 2013 - 8:07pmwhere have you heard this information about it being released next year? If they’ve announced that then they must have said in what format we can expect to see it?
drjakeyoung
March 6th, 2013 - 8:22pmDan Hall wants to see sales of the ice warriors (a more popular story than reign of terror) before he makes a decision on the animation of the underwater menace. He also said that if it is to be animation, then in all likely hood it would be next year.
josh smith
March 6th, 2013 - 8:59pmys and its too late to stort ANOTHER project when the ice worriors isnt even finished yet
matparks08
March 6th, 2013 - 10:11pmSo if it ends up NOT being animated, is it likely to be tagged on another release – maybe even Tenth Planet?
gordon
March 7th, 2013 - 1:22amOr it could end up on iTunes. Airlock was actually very close to ending up on there. I would prefer if underwater menace 2 didn’t as if airlock did end up on there there was actually no plans to put it on dvd.
josh smith
March 7th, 2013 - 6:22amthen they would be wasting money

March 8th, 2013 - 12:49pmA DVD commentary on The Underwater Menace has been done. Fraser Hines has done it.

March 6th, 2013 - 5:32pmI’m a bit of a completist; with the ‘wiped’ episodes slowly becoming available in animated form is an absolute godsend. My ever loving wife think’s I’ve got OCD but all you Whovians know better 🙂

March 6th, 2013 - 5:02pmDon’t worry, it’ll definately be an extra and it’s been hinted to that there is an option to watch Part 4 with the original regeneration, not entirely unlike the option to watch ‘Invasion Of The Dinosaurs’ Part 1 in Color or Black & White.
gordon
March 7th, 2013 - 12:17amOut of interest josh smith what did you find bad about it?
josh smith
March 7th, 2013 - 6:21amto be honest this loooks much better than the invation that i have and thats the the problem. the invation was terrible and i am sort of thinking that all animations are like that
ijust bought the ark and the mind robber
gordon
March 7th, 2013 - 7:31amBut the animation is done by different people and its a different style. Just because you didn’t like one doesn’t mean you won’t like the other
