Six new Doctor Who Collectors’ Sets + New Australia / USA Availability

Some sets are available now with more to follow from www.sanity.com.au

Customers in the USA will be able to order sets via www.amazon.com #ad

Character Options is pleased to announce the launch of six new Doctor Who action figure sets launching in late July 2020.

The range includes several action figure boxsets, including Friends and Foes of the Thirteenth Doctor set which completes the Thirteenth Doctors crew. All include highly detailed 5.5 inch scale figures featuring multiple points of articulation and come beautifully packaged.

The new collection will be available in the UK exclusively at B&M stores from late July and in the USA from www.amazon.com #ad and in Australia from www.sanity.com.au

Hotly anticipated is the Friends and Foes of the Thirteenth Doctor set. These are the first figures of companions Yasmin (Yaz) Khan, as seen in ‘Arachnids in the UK’, and Ryan Sinclair as seen in the story ‘Rosa’. The set also features a Judoon Trooper, one of the ruthless intergalactic security enforcers seen in the story ‘Fugitive of the Judoon’.

The new release of the Second Doctor and TARDIS Set features detailing from the last episode of 1969’s ten part epic ‘The War Games’, the final story of Season Six. The set comprises the Second Doctor with ripped trouser knee details and bedraggled appearance. The TARDIS comes in dark blue with iconic Second Doctor square top lamp, standard opening doors, ‘POLICE BOX’ signage and the newer low-profile base.

For Dalek aficionados there will be the two History of the Daleks Sets, which include specially created inserts as part of the heritage Doctor Who brand packaging.

‘The Daleks’ Collector Set comprises of a Twin Dalek Set and features the Daleks as seen fully in ‘The Daleks’, the second story of the very first season of Doctor Who in 1963. When seen in the early days of black and white television these Daleks were utterly alien in look and virtually identical in their livery of silver, mid grey and blue hemispheres. Their eyestalks became larger or smaller like the pupil of an eye and their guns comprised straight metal rails with inset plastic octagons. To identify each prop the casings had parallel black lines etched on, numbering them one to four. This has been replicated as accurately as possible in this new set.

The Dalek Invasion of Earth Collector Set features the Daleks as seen in the second serial of the second season, The Dalek Invasion of Earth, from 1964. Overwhelming demand and popularity meant the Daleks had to return, and this time they came to Earth. These revised Daleks were taller and more imposing with deep bases and revised colour schemes this stunning new set represents a silver eyed ‘Drone’ Dalek and the black ‘Saucer Command’ Dalek.

Hot on the heels of the Harry Sullivan figure release last year, Companions of the Fourth Doctor features a new figure of Sarah Jane Smith and two figures of Romana completing the Fourth Doctor’s companion list from 1975 to 1981. This set includes Sarah Jane Smith as seen in 1975’s ‘Genesis of the Daleks’ and ‘Revenge of the Cybermen’ stories, and Romana as seen in 1978’s ‘The Pirate Planet’ and 1979’s ‘Destiny of the Daleks’.

For some collectors, the arrival of the 1971 U.N.I.T Claws of Axos Set ends possibly the longest awaited figure release and completes the classic Third Doctor’s core U.N.I.T team of Brigadier Lethbridge Stuart, Captain Mike Yates and Sergeant John Benton. This new set features figures from Season 8’s 1971 story ‘The Claws of Axos’; the Brigadier wearing his less formal uniform with U.N.I.T beret, and Benton and Yates sporting their combat fatigues and webbing.

Al Dewar, Character Options, Creative Director, said. “This will be the first time in almost a decade where there will be parallel launches of the same product in the UK and the USA. Hopefully this new wave of toys will contain a few surprises for everyone. As always, the Character team has tried very hard to bring something new to delight, and hopefully exceed the expectations of fans and collectors alike. This time we are bringing even more to the table with six new products!”

it might not look that great but they could make a ribos operation romana using the jo grant with the detachable coat.

I’d like to see an armageddon romana 1 using a Jabe figure with a new chest sculpt to match romanas dress

they could also use that to do a stones of blood romana when she changes into the pink dress

There’s plenty of other (character) options that would have been than the Romana 1 we’ve got. The figure looks nothing like her Pirate Planet outfit. Plus using another Claudia Brown figure when another in this release is using it is terrible.

well you should still be happy and appreciative that we have these figures at all! cos i know that i am and that i can’t WAIT to get my hands on them! XD

Romana 1 looks fine, i have one here, and its generally accepted now i think they have to use whatever body sculpts are available and compatible to produce something as near as possible. These new head sculpts would have been unimaginable even a couple of years ago.

I think it’s a bit unfair for UK buyers who have to scramble everywhere to get sets, or rely on honest fans to get them for you out of area, when the US just order and sit back and enjoy delivered items.
It would make more sense if you could nip in your local store and order what you want and pick it up from there. My stores are crap and don’t get any sets in at all.

    • booboo

      July 16th, 2020 - 10:58am

Unfair? the USA is 2.5x the price, this is the way B&M work whom without these sets would not exist at all. its this way or nothing why don’t people understand this after all these years.

I wasn’t knocking B&M’s quality items, I have loads, but the pain of tracking them down when it would much easier to order in store and pick up.

Just thought of a cool idea for after the history of the Daleks sets are finished. I imagine they’ll probably do a history of the Cybermen line too but I also thought, how about the history of the Master? Think about it, usually in every Master story he is working with a different monster. So you could do Master and Monster 2 packs.

Here are some of my ideas. These are based on if they can make any figure, not on what figures they can make from existing parts and on a budget. Just what my dream list would be (each Master would be in a variant costume from each respective story):

    – Delgado Master and Carnival Auton (Terror of the Autons)

    – Delgado Master and Chin Lee (Mind of Evil)

    – Delgado Master and Axon (Claws of Axos)

    – Delgado Master and Guardian (Colony in Space)

    – Delgado Master and Bok (The Dæmons)

    – Delgado Master and Sea Devil (The Sea Devils)

    – Delgado Master and Kronos (The Time Monster)

    – Delgado Master and Ogron (Frontier in Space)

    – Pratt Master and Chancellor Goth (The Deadly Assassin)

    – Beevers Master and Melkur (Keeper of Traken)

    – Ainley Master and the Watcher (Logopolis)

    – Ainley Master and the Portreeve (Castrovalva)

    – Ainley Master and Kalid (Time-Flight)

    – Ainley Master and Kamelion (The Kings Demons)

    – Ainley Master and Raston Warrior Robot (The Five Doctors)

    – Ainley Master and Turlough (or possibly Peri in Swimsuit ) (Planet of Fire)

    – Ainley Master and the Rani (Mark of the Rani)

    – Ainley Master and the Valeyard (The Ultimate Foe)

    – Ainley Master and Cheetah Person (Survival)

    – Roberts Master and Chang Lee (The Movie)

    – Jacobi Master and Chantho (Utopia)

    – Simm Master and Lucy Saxon (Sounds of Drums/Last of the Time Lords)

    – Simm Master and Rassilon (End of Time)

    – Gomez Master and Cyberiad Cyberman (Dark Water/Death in Heaven)

    – Gomez Master and Colony Sarff (Magician’s Apprentice/Witch’s Familiar)

    – Gomez Master Truth Monk (Lie of the Land)

    – Razor and Mondasian Patient (World Enough and Time)

    – Simm Master and Mondasian Cyberman (The Doctor Falls)

    – Dawan Master and Kasaavin (Spyfall)

    – Dawan Master and Ashad (Ascension of the Cybermen)

    – Dawan Master and Cyber Master (The Timeless Children)

    • James17

      July 16th, 2020 - 2:41pm

I think a history of the cybermen would be more likely, but this would be soooooo cool. Give me that Ogron now.

Anyway – so why is the USA getting better treatment than the UK

USA – can order what they want
UK – your lucky if you can find them as they have normally been scalped and never make it to the shelves

If the UK resale company got their act together and did a online store they could sell more at the RRP

    • booboo

      July 15th, 2020 - 5:16pm

Better deal, they are over double the price

These would not exist AT ALL without B&M who do not sell online, they have got better and better each year so they have got their act together just fine despite what you think.

Amazon USA does not have any prices listed neither does bbc USA ?

    • booboo

this is the “official north America shop” https://www.buydoctorwhonow.com/

You can see all the prices there

Its just a custom Shopify site that will link to Amazon when stocks arrive.

These (B&M) items are not being sold by Amazon as some people around seem to think but “fulfilled” by Amazon there is a big difference.

The BBC shop does not do pre-orders. Generally there are no pre-orders on “fulfilled by Amazon stock either.

Has anyone seen detailed/close up shots of the Dalek sets yet? From what I can see it seems that, besides the silver dalek with the small eye stalk pupil, the other 3 daleks have been released before.

Dalek with normal Eye Stalk Pupil – Dalek Collectors Set 1
Saucer Command Dalek – 1st Doctor and Dalek twin Set
Drone Dalek – Electronic Sound FX release

As I have the above releases, I am hoping that I can give these sets a miss and save £40 (and some stress hunting them down).

So, besides the small eye stalk pupil, if anyone can point out any significant differences, please let me know.

    Thanks

    • masterdoctorten

      July 15th, 2020 - 3:49pm

They are different! The ‘Dead Planet’ Daleks have black lines (number identifications) on the back (watch batman march’s review on youtube, and Dalek 2 has the squinted eye. They are also a much shinier silver.

The Invasion of Earth Dalek Drone is mostly the same, just brighter. The black dalek has a squinted eye, black eyestalk (original was silver) and grey dish (original was silver).

    • Anonymous

      July 15th, 2020 - 5:26pm

Thanks for the video recommendation. Having watched it, I think besides the squint eyes and production identification lines on the back (which are barely noticeable), the changes are so small, I think I’ll wait until I see these sets are reduced to half price.

      Thanks again.

Sorry if already covered off in the comments, but Ali does say that they chose Claws of Axos for a reason (but wouldn’t say why) for the UNIT set. A possible re-release of the Jo Grant and the two Axons, or maybe the Delgado Master? Surely not another Pertwee Tardis?

I can’t think of any ship, playset or character (of any great significance) from that episode?

Wishlist fantasy would be… a Bessie set? They wouldn’t, would they?

He also said that was the last of the B&M sets for this year, but was he implying not the last sets they would release this year?

    • booboo

      July 15th, 2020 - 2:10pm

i think there will be another episode specific set, i also think that’s not for this year either,or at least it wasn’t going to be.

    • Liam

      July 15th, 2020 - 3:13pm

Agree with booboo – they’ve got the head sculpts of Benton and Yates now, so why not some other UNIT sets of the same 3 characters? All 3 had significant costume changes according to story. This would explain why they can’t simply call it the “UNIT set” and has to be story specific.

    • James17

      July 15th, 2020 - 3:26pm

I’ll be honest I took it the other way. Instead of taking it as ‘we made this specifically the unit set as there will be more claws of axos sets’, I took it as ‘we made this specifically the Claws of axos set as there will be more unit sets’ and that would make sense. It would seem a little odd to make completely new headsculpts and only use them once when there are several possible variants. For example, an invasion of the dinosaurs set with the lads in their uniform style costumes, and the Brig in his sought after Daemons costume

    • JJwho

      July 16th, 2020 - 2:00pm

It would be nice if they did variants of Brig, Yates and Benton with Jo Grant which Katy Manning would love. Hopefully more UNIT sets will lead to a Liz Shaw figure.

Wish I had a full sized Dalek that I could get inside to actually safely go to B&M and buy these.
As I don’t have a protective Kaled armoured suit I will have to pay some “nerf herder” on eBay for them instead. Sorry for the Star Wars themed insult I can’t think of a Who related one at this time.

I wonder how the US market has two online options yet the UK market is forced to hunt these down from a retailer who cant/wont even reserve items. This was bad enough BEFORE their was a killer pandemic.

I know only CO can answer this and I know they won’t- just venting.

    • Anonymous

      July 15th, 2020 - 8:13am

Exactaly. I’m greatful co make them at all and that b&m are interested in them but come on, I’m very scared about going to get them this year.

    • Dalek Command

      July 15th, 2020 - 8:28am

Just to add to the pain these sets are appearing on eBay now at the usual sky high prices. Some on pre order which make me think that there are insiders In B and M cashing in.

    • booboo

      July 15th, 2020 - 8:36am

these sets would have been done and dusted long before anyone even heard of covid, you cant leave or stall 10’s of thousands of pounds of stock until people deem its safe to go out.

B&M choose not to sell online, its their business model( and clearly it works as they are one of the few expanding businesses even now) so it this way or not at all, these sets would simply not exist without their commitment.

Character seem to have found away back into the USA and Australian markets neither of which will significantly effect B&M sales which will be just as important.

should also say its probably not staff, just people hedging their bets and will drive around numerous stores emptying the shelves to fulfil orders

its not just eBayers who do this, amazon sellers and even some retail shop do the same

happens every year i don’t know why people are still so surprised

I plan to call the same store this time around they were very helpful and put to one side. If push comes to shove go to the store and reserve, if you can leave your name and number, I,ve done that as well.

    SCRUNCHY TIME!

Great video. Great figures. Great Al!

  • Doctor909

    July 14th, 2020 - 10:14pm

I reckon after to watching the video (& I don’t think anyone’s suggested this but I might be wrong) there’s gonna be another UNIT 1971 set but this time rather than being Claws Of Axos it’ll be The Daemons where they put in the existing Brig variant & this time have either a new character or Benton and Yates in gear more akin to the Three Doctors Brig.
I reckon there might be the interim style variant sets where they are primarily variants so people who missed out on these initial sets can still own the characters, collectors get more & CO get the most out of the new head sculpts. Romana 2 is crying out for a repaint for a The Horns Of Nimon variant

    • Mrs Croot

      July 15th, 2020 - 9:48am

A UNIT Daemons set would be great for people who missed the first set and can then get the Brigadier. For me it is my worst nightmare.
The three Brigadiers I have are Axos, Daemons, and Season 7. Was looking forward to a possible rerelease of the Three Doctors one next year, but now it makes more sense to make a new Benton, Brig and Yates together, rather than Benton, Brig and a figure from the Three Doctors.
Oh well, I hope others who missed ou on Axos and Daemons will be happy with this set and the possibility of the Daemons being on next year

    • booboo

      July 15th, 2020 - 11:14am

Being as “that picture” had a cracking 4th Doctor variant from Terror of the Zygons and its very episode specific which seems to be the focus of the comment i would go for that, Brig in kilt anyone – that could possibly lead into a Jamie at some stage…

    • Luck4unow

      July 15th, 2020 - 2:03pm

Oooh I like you’re thinking booboo.

A kilt base that could be used for a Zygons Brig, future Jamie and…..Hamaevore?

Perhaps a Zygons set could have a Zygon kit 4th, Brig in kilt and Harry or Zygon. Or a Harry Zygon.

I fully expect the next UNIT set will be Benton/Yates/Brig in a 1971 story specific (Daemons likely or perhaps even Terror of the Autons)

    • JL

      July 15th, 2020 - 4:33pm

Is there any bodies they could reuse for a curse of Fenric set? there would be plenty of haemovore variants as well as Fenric and a duffle coat 7th doctor that could go in the set and it would give the 7th doctor a bit of variety other than a few daleks and cybermen on the shelf.

And i hope we may see a 2010s unit set with Kate, Osgood and perhaps a generic unit soldier i.e. with a red cap or possibly or a magician’s apprentice Clara using the ace body? Clara was in the majority of 2010s unit stories…

  • Rich

    July 14th, 2020 - 10:02pm

This is probably a super obvious question right, but what does Al actually do? Is he just in charge of the doctor who line, like it’s up to him which figures are made or is he like a higher up in character options?

    • booboo

      July 15th, 2020 - 8:52am

Head of product development (not just Doctor Who but many other things at Character)

Choices are discussed with B&M who have a big input, then its down to what’s viable within the budget, what will go with what etc.

They work about a year in advance (next years sets already decided i think)

  • MRP

    July 14th, 2020 - 7:55pm

Is there any chance that these will be available in Canada?

    • Anonymous

      July 14th, 2020 - 8:30pm

As a fellow Canadian who has asked around, yes, BUT you’ll have to buy through the American distributors on Amazon, which are already extremely expensive, plus the exchange rate and shipping which is not cheap sadly. BBC shop Canada will most likely not get these either since they’re B&M exclusives. Hope you manage to get a hold of some though. Can’t believe we’re finally getting access to these figures after years of waiting.

    • Cosmodad

      July 14th, 2020 - 10:38pm

I’m holding out hope that the BBC Canada Shop will have them. Both the US and Canada BBC Shop currently have the 13th Doctor Tardis and Recon Dalek, so maybe they will stock the same stuff in regards to these sets? If not, exchange rate and shipping costs are in our future.

    • Anonymous

      July 15th, 2020 - 8:38am

@Cosmodad I want to believe they will but it seems extremely unlikely. The 13th Doctor TARDIS and Recon Dalek aren’t B&M exclusives so any shop can order and distribute them technically speaking at retail price. I don’t know the inner workings of BBC merchandise distribution among its worldwide stores but I’m sure the only reason that they got those two products is because there’s no exclusive claim by a single store (in this case B&M) so any international BBC outlet I guess is free to order and distribute the items if they think it’ll be profitable.

Which makes me cry because a few weeks ago I managed to get two of those 13th Doctor Tardises, Recon Dalek, a Fourth doctor costume and 12th doctor costume t-shirt all with a discount and free shipping. Maybe if anything they’ll get the Ryan-Yaz-Judoon pack simply because it’s the new series and I’m sure they think most people just want to purchase nuwho stuff. I hope I’m wrong but it seems extremely unlikely they’ll get any of these figures. This is the first time I’ve ever wanted every product in the wave but that’s going to destroy my wallet haha…
Better start saving up, those exchange rates and cross-border fees are gonna hurt worse than a blast from a Dalek gun-stalk…

I don’t know if it’s possible, but I’d really like to see them change the wrapping of the Clara figure to one of her closed coat (sleeves and legs can remain) from the zygon invasion with 2 swappable heads, with a short hair done up for Bonnie, and a short hair flowing head sculpt for a Clara variant. Package her with a sculpt of an Osgood box- can be reused for both blue and red variants, and perhaps a bazooka. It still bugs me that we never got even attempt at a semi-screen accurate Clara, and it would be nice to see a series 9 variant, even if they just repainted the original pvc dress and had a new head sculpt with short hair for an under the lake variant.

Suprised to see this thread still open now the individual posts are up. Great work BooBoo with the bar codes – they all scan in the B&M app. Just a concern tho, will you be allowing posts on the individual listings to indicate where people are seeing them appear and store sightings etc to help us find them?

i CAN’T WAIT to get my hands on the companions of the 4th doctor set! the only thing that annoys me is that saraha jane’s face doesn’t really look like liz sladen’s and the romna figure doesn’t have the pink hairband but otherwise it’s phenomenal

    • booboo

      June 16th, 2020 - 9:31pm

you won’t be disappointed “in hand” trust me ( hairband excepted)

the fact that these photos look different to the other photos is quite depressing as they look worse in the other photos however this could just be more to do with the lighting

Few differences in the new photos. The TARDIS is much darker. The Brig has a more unique paintjob with a black wash on his legs and Sarah now has the lighter green shirt collar painted on and looks much more accurate.

i feel like they mixed up sarah jane and romana I cos sarah jane’s top was never closed and romana’s top was never open XD

      June 16th, 2020 - 10:13am

They’re stuck using the bodies from figures from previous lines, and are trying to be as creative as possible.

    • tom baker rules

      June 16th, 2020 - 12:26pm

yeah i realised, they’ve used the yaz figure to make romana and i’m not sure which one for sarah jane

    • Simon

      June 20th, 2020 - 11:05am

The Sarah Jane figure body is the Martha Jones in black combats figure from Series 3 which included the Toclafane accessory.

next time there are new figures they should do some more sarah jane adventures ones, like
    rani
    clyde
    luke
    mrs wormwood
    the trickster

it would also be good i they make an owen figure from torchwood

    • Romana III

      June 14th, 2020 - 12:19am

Character Options don’t have the rights to make Torchwood figures, that was SciFiCollector (TW being an ‘adult’ show isn’t compatible with character options ‘family friendly’ brand policy.

    • Bob James

      June 14th, 2020 - 1:38am

tom baker rules, a prototype Owen Harper figure was made and it was intended to go to production before diminishing sales had the Torchwood line fold. The prototype was on display at one of the Sci-Fi Collector stores for a time, and you still might be able to see a picture of it if you do a search as one was up a while back and might still be there.

yes it looked a cracking figure as well, i doubt Character retain any sort of SJA licence either sadly

Sadly Booboo, you are probably right about no SJA licence. If the brand was in a better position and there was demand for it, I’m sure they could renegotiate but it won’t happen. The only SJA figure re-released was the Graske, which debuted in a DW product anyway.

That we got a Weevil, and Cyberwoman (thanks again Chibby), and we never got Owen Harper. This is criminal!

    • tom baker rules

      June 14th, 2020 - 6:43pm

booboo it’s a shame that the owen harper was just a prototype as it looked BRILLIANT 🙂 and bob james your right, the fact that they made a cyberwoman and not owen harper is vile!

    • booboo

      June 14th, 2020 - 7:09pm

like everything else they fully a expected wave 3 which Owen would have been in but wave 2 bottomed

    • Romana III

      June 15th, 2020 - 4:25am

Do we have any idea what else wave 3 would have consisted off, I presume 3 more figures, besides Owen?

    • tom baker rules

      June 15th, 2020 - 8:48am

      perhaps a ben figure?

    • The Silent Silent

      June 15th, 2020 - 10:24am

I always imagined Wave 3 could have consisted of Owen Harper, Sleeper Agent Beth, Angry Fairy and Captain Jack (with a different coloured shirt to keep costs down)
