SDCC Starts Today With Preview Night

SDCC Starts Today With Preview Night

Today sees the launch of SDCC (San Diago Comic Con) where major Toy, game and figure manufactures, distributors and retailers show their latest products to the world.

Many Guest stars attend the convention with special panels and signings. Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill, Steven Moffat and Caroline Skinner will take part in a Q&A session on Sunday where it is expected that some unseen Series 7 footage will be shown. They also promise something “very special”.

Many manufactures have limited edition merchandise that you can only initially buy at the event and others announce new products for the first time.

This year as we know Underground Toys will have the Victory of The Daleks set. Its not known yet if any other new products will be shown.

You can find out all about the event on the Comic Con website at www.comic-con.org

We will have images as soon as they become available.

I know i have been talking a lot recently, but a thought I have on any classic exclusive they do is that the last comic cons, have generally had 1 new series and 1 or 2 classic exclusives. Plus the Leela figure, a companion was announced last year. So to me, its logical that they release either a new companion unheard about IE Jamie,or the one everyone wants atm, Jo. Preferably in a pack, or do what they did with leela, and release a single version first, then a two pack with either Omega or gel creature, then a pack, either axos or 3docs.

Is it me or is there getting less and less each SDCC? In 2009 we had the 1st Doctor & Dalek, 2nd Doctor & Cyberman, Real Time 6th Doctor (plus the 2 balck & white sets) with a total of 5 sets in 2009. Last year we had 2 sets with River Song & Pandorica Chair, and Leela = they were great sets, this year if they don’t hurry up we’ll end up with one 🙁

There was the 9th Doctor with green jumper SDCC exclusive too. That was… 2008 I think?

      I agree that it’s certainly dwindling off a bit…

Also, I read some time ago about proto types for a classic TARDIS and Bessie, both were scrapped, but now we have the TARDIS, so do you think a Bessie set could be on the way in the future?

Maybe a unit pack or 3 invloving Jo, doctor, Bessie Brig and sergeant Benton???
Like the time warrior set, make third doctor and vehicle set, and maybe the second figure can be either Jo, monster or Brig???

As long as there are britons, there will always be demand for Doctor who items. At least from me! lol

      July 12th, 2012 - 8:47pm

TBH I think the best time for a classic TARDIs console set would be next year right? Think, 25 years, Dapol console set, 50 years, (hopefully 6 sided) console set, and from there as the 2 current consoles are constructable, release a set or two, with alternate console w/ walls and scanner, and maybe even a zero room, basicly make the floor part electronic with sounds and such, the console/s plug in and the sounds are int eh consoles, activated by buttons on them. Plus motorized doors, I think if CO put money into it, it can be the best release.

      either would do me

    • andrew

      July 11th, 2012 - 5:14pm

True, to be honest, i’d love the missing Master from Castrovalva set, after all the exclusive before was Ainley, another one will do me fine, but something new and different is welcome, a Yeti is one i’m looking forward to, isn’t that rumored to come with Jamie, there has been prototype images right?

    • booboo

      July 11th, 2012 - 5:17pm

a long time ago, could be in a twin pack with Jamie or enemies of the 2nd Doctor set

    • andrew

      July 11th, 2012 - 5:20pm

Yes, an enemies of the second doctor set is a great idea, for once, another cyberman is welcome, the Wheel in space is the only one missing, so that, a yeti and maybe the ice lord, that would be an epic set!

    • Anonymous

      July 11th, 2012 - 7:01pm

“Enemies of the … Doctor” is a FP release not an UT release (there is a difference) so it won’t be coming out at SDCC.

    • andrew

      July 11th, 2012 - 8:07pm

Yeah, but the exclusives for FP are made by underground toys who work with Character options to make the figures, is that right booboo???

    • booboo

      July 11th, 2012 - 8:10pm

underground toys dont actually make any of the sets they just commission and wholesale them as do Forbidden planet, anyone can with enough money probably.

I really was meaning the yeti could turn up in any on these sets in the future

    • Anonymous

      July 11th, 2012 - 8:21pm

UT commision most of the exclusive range, however occassionally FP will commision sets of their own (you can tell them by the lack of any UT logo or information regarding the set being given by UT).

The Enemies sets and The Chase set were both FP sets, as was the second Remembrance of the Daleks set and the Revenge of the Cybermen set.

    • andrew

      July 11th, 2012 - 8:29pm

Ok, I think the yeti isn’t far away, for a few reasons:

We haven’t had any 60s monsters for a while, unless you count the numerous dalek releases

Also, there was a high demand for the Empreror Davros, and (evetually) we got him. So i’m hoping they will release one soon, even if it is an exclusive, the classic releases so far for sdcc have been sold through FP right? Only that doctor and dalek scientist is an American exlusive?

‘Our lips our sealed untill the Con…’

At the time they said the Jo figures were due out in August, so it might not be.

There’s been rumours going around about it possibly being a Jamie figure.

    • Judooning

      July 11th, 2012 - 2:59pm

Jamie or Jo would be nice. Even if it’s not a companion, atleast we are getting something else.

But a companion would be a hit seller for SDCC.

    • Ando92

      July 11th, 2012 - 3:19pm

Personally I’m hoping on a Jo Grant figure as Leela was released at the SDCC last year but was not released out to the rest of the world until August, and they’ve said Jo’s out at August, there’s a connection.
