December 29th, 2013 - 11:29pmRules
The rules are simple, alas too simple. There a re a few areas where the rules are very vague on what precisely you are supposed to do in certain situations. And as always those situations arose causing perplexity to cross our faces. These minor quibbles aside it is pretty straight forward, after all it’s marketed as a kids game. Spin the wheel, Player 2 moves a Dalek, then Player 1 moves her Doctor. Certain hexes have special situations; Wormhole (move to another wormhole hex), Collect a TARDIS part (needed to win) or random encounter. These random encounters are decided by pressing the button on the TARDIS model which then plays a line if speech back at you. From there you refer to the rules. Some of these are good but most are bad, such as lose all your cards! Once you collect one of each cards and make to the win hex, well, you’ve won.
Game play
Game play is very simple once it gets going. Spin, Dalek Move, Doctor move, encounters, next. If anything it get repetitive and slightly tedious when you keep losing cards just as you are about to win. As a two player game it almost becomes stalemate. I had lost all my cards and Jen had at least one of everything, and was avoiding having to press the TARDIS button. So it was just me moving the Daleks and keep sending her back to her starting hex. While amusing at first it did being to drag on. What should have been maybe a 20-30 minutes game started to hit 50 minutes and frustration. I have no idea how it would play out with more than 2 players but am very tempted to find out later this week as friends as expecting me to bring a game.
