Interesting information regarding Gary Russell on the star beast novelisation listing on Amazon. On the about the author section: He is currently overseeing animated reimaginings of old 1960s missing Doctor Who stories for BBC studios.

I guess this means we DO potentially have Big Finish Creative working on new animations – so the statement from last year “For us, this is it” has changed???

True Gordon, that was September time when Abominable came out – and we had fresh rumours of new animations beyond that in Jan 23 so yes plenty of time for fresh offers / contracts I guess.

      We’ll see…

So, an announcement for an animated Toymaker in September with a release in November? It would tie in with the rumoured NPH part in the specials.

    • Prof Horner

      July 15th, 2023 - 4:49pm

Well if it is Toymaker that is about to be animated, it seems the perfect choice. It seems to be an open secret that the character is returning in the specials. With the Gary Russell treatment, it should turn a drab black and white serial into something quite spectacular. Plus we get another much needed season 3 story. The only downside is that The Doctor is missing from the middle two episodes.
Still hope for some missing episodes returned though.

Animated is one thing. Its lost episodes we really want. I just hope the animations are done well unlike some i could mention.

      July 15th, 2023 - 6:31pm

I have heard from a few users on different forums that Ian seems to think that Toymaker is being animated for the 60th. I don’t use Gallifrey Base though, so I’m only hearing part of the discussion!

    • Prowl 1701

      July 15th, 2023 - 7:34pm

I agree that animated Toymaker would tie in nicely with the 60th anniversary. But would they have had time to do it properly or would it be rushed out? The 2016 version of Power and Fury both suffered from being rushed. Plus I would assume they will muffle out or replace that one piece of dialogue from the King.

    • Gordon

      July 15th, 2023 - 8:48pm

I’d rather not have it rushed out and get another power situation so if it isn’t ready for November I’d rather it be announced on the 23rd for a 2024 release

Very interesting to find The Doctor Who range in Germany have announced complete-Doctor boxsets for Jodie Whittaker, Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi and Patrick Troughton (I assume any missing episodes will be telesnaps)

It’s possible we in the UK might not get these sets, but if they manage to get Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant complete sets with original frame rate, in HD, then to quote the Doctor, “Good grief!” We may unintentionally be getting a very special gift on this 60th year indeed.

Germany has some sets already out too and America has got some complete sets. The UK doesn’t seem to get these. If we do they will be £80 per set I expect. I want a complete Series 1-13 Blu-Ray but knowing the BBC that’s £400+

    • Gordon

      July 15th, 2023 - 1:37am

I’d lower your expectations on the Troughton release. It’s just the ones that have been previously released in Germany.

      July 15th, 2023 - 11:55am

Any links to these? Would love to see what they look like!

    • Samuel

      July 15th, 2023 - 12:44pm

@Gordon regarding Troughton set, the only serials without a direct home release are ‘The Highlanders’, ‘The Wheel in Space’ and ‘The Space Pirates’ some footage of these stories are on the Lost in Time dvd, followed by Audio CD releases. I can’t imagine it would be that impossible to put the telesnap photos and subtitles to the audios.

Obviously the Collection range is more experimental with new scans, vfx, dolby Atmos, behind the sofa extras and so forth – having a minimal, complete set per Doctor, in the way you get combo sets of James Bond or Spider-Man franchises, I think would be a very good idea to help get new fans on board; therefore hardcore fans that want the luxuries of the collection set can go for them.

Sortof like a no frills, dvd combo boxset. I’d definitely go for them.

    • Jake E

      July 15th, 2023 - 3:28pm

Samuel mate you’ve got problems. If you hate the Limited Editions that much as you keep implying in every post and have basically said before then just sell them and move on bud haha 🙂

For a complete set you could sell them for well over £1000

    • Gordon

      July 15th, 2023 - 3:31pm

That’s the case in the U.K. but in Germany the likes of power, menace, moonbase, terror, faceless, evil, abominable, warriors, dominators, invasion and I think the krotons and mind robber never got released there. This box set that polyband is releasing is only stories that have been localised to the German language. It’s only German dubbed versions of tomb, enemy, web, seeds and games and a subbed version of fury. The box set is called THE PATRICK TROUGHTON YEARS – CHRONICLES OF THE 2ND DOCTOR WITH ALL GERMAN EPISODES (on DVD)

    • Samuel

      July 15th, 2023 - 6:57pm

@Jake E – Odd thing to say? I don’t hate anything, pretty strong language.

Reason I post is because I’m usually very interested in the fan speculation towards home media, given we’ve just had about half a year of silence until now.

The German media announcement really caught my eye, because of how closely synced it was to the Season 20 Collection announcement, and now we have rumours of a Season 3 story animation suddenly gaining substance.

It’s also great to read, via a retweet by Matthew Purchase, that work seems to be already well underway, if not nearing completion on the very next Collection set. That’s exactly what this range needs, it’s been getting desperate for an update, never necessarily a finished product – just some kind of indication that something’s happening at all.

If the German boxsets are never expanded on towards a UK release that will be a shame. The Tennant years have had all kinds of special complete boxsets (in the wrong frame rate and sound levels), and we’ve obviously had the series 1-4 dvd boxset for the last 1.5 decades. So I don’t think it’s really that much of a stretch to just combo up the dvds, and leave the main restoration, sound and vfx work and extras to the specially tiered Collection range.

Also @JakeE the last few Collection ranges have sold for below half of that estimate you gave. Weather that’s due to the long media silence from the range affecting the set’s value or not, who knows. I do question a lot of things about the range, but the care and hard work that goes into them is second to none.

    • Prowl 1701

      July 15th, 2023 - 7:36pm

It’s nice to finally be getting news, after all of the silence we have gotten the first half of the “anniversary year”.

    • Gordon

      July 15th, 2023 - 9:49pm

Actually what Matthew purchase tweeted might not be referring to the next blu ray set:

Next Doctor Who BluRay project just completed and it’s splendid #NotSeason20

      He also said:

Not for me to announce, but I doubt you’ll be waiting too many weeks for the official announcement. #NotMissingEpsEitherSoDoNotGetTooExcited

And there’ll be at least two more projects delivered by September.

Note that it’s called blu ray project. Might not be a season. Considering the announcement isn’t too far away I doubt it will be for another season. Anniversary year or not it’s too soon for another announcement and it’s pretty unlikely all 3 of those projects are season sets I think it’s more likely one one of the September deliveries is the next set and would fit for in for an October reveal. It Could be a surviving episode of an animated release or a colourised release or a special edition of some sort. Could be anything.

Definitely sounds like we are getting more releases this year. Peter Crocker tweeted that he just delivered the next doctor who project (he specifies it’s not season 20). He also said there would be at least 2 other projects delivered by September.

Bfi is showing off colourised doctor who at the missing believed wiped event in august so it’s probably for that

    • Jake E

      July 14th, 2023 - 10:21pm

Having said that if they do announce something within a month then there’s a wait of 2 months till release which would equal November aka 60th Anniversary so maybe possible actually

If it’s true that Season 20 comes September then that’s a roughly 2 month wait and they took forever to announce it so maybe another will come ASAP

Gordon, Colourised Doctor Who? What does this mean, what have they colourised?

    • D84

      July 14th, 2023 - 10:56pm

      Details Gordon ….

Possibility it’s a clean up of an existing / orphan episode – that’s being included on an animated release?

    • Gordon

      July 14th, 2023 - 11:41pm

Don’t know if you remember but when the mirror published a report on the animations of smugglers and underwater animations it also mentioned colourised doctor who. “ BBC bosses plan to colourise certain stories from the Hartnell and Troughton eras (1963-69), for broadcast next year. This is likely to include the very first story, An Unearthly Child.”

The bfi holds an event every year called missing believed wiped where it shows off recently rediscovered and rare 50s 60s 70s telly. The press release for this year event in august has just landed. It mentions they have colourised early doctor who clips to show off at the event. No mention of what clips they are though. I’d be gobsmacked if this wasn’t the project Peter was talking about just finishing. https://core-cms.bfi.org.uk/media/30843/download

      July 14th, 2023 - 11:50pm

Probably the very first episode of Who, An Unearthly Child, in colour. Maybe more.

    • Jake E

      July 15th, 2023 - 1:31am

Gordon, interesting but why only clips?

Is this to gauge interest in complete episodes or maybe this is just a taster then a full episode will be released on DVD or BBC 4?

It does make the article seem more legit but then it could have just been a guess that panned out

    • Gordon

      July 15th, 2023 - 2:05am

It’s a long event. Good 5-6 hours at least and they show off a lot of stuff in that time. The probably only have time to show off clips. I’d be surprised if it didn’t get a blu ray release of some sort especially as Peter did refer to this project as a blu ray project. I expect it’s probably an unearthly child. Ever since I heard the colourisation rumour I always thought a special edition of an unearthly child with colourised version and in a steelbook would make a good November 2023 release

This event was the same event in 2011 that announced the recovery of airlock and uwm 2 and also showed off the wheel in space animated minisode in 2018 so the bbc have previous working experience with the bfi and missing believed wiped events. I got the press release from the bfi website so it’s definite legit. I don’t know who wrote it though but they certainly don’t have a clue about how doctor who was filmed as it was never filmed in colour.

    • Rex Farrel

      July 15th, 2023 - 8:42am

I’m thinking that there might be some crayoned Daleks as well, since Paul V was looking at the BFI holdings for it last year (as suspected, the missing picture neg for ep 7 was in the BFI sound neg can – accidentally swapped over circa 1978). Daleks would have far more mass appeal than three eps with the cavemen, although they could have done some shorter re-edits. E.g. “Experience the beginnings of Dr Who in a brand new way!” (or words to that effect).

    • Rex Farrel

      July 15th, 2023 - 9:08am

Now that I’ve read it, that press release has a number of mistakes – including which comes first out of 1984 and 1985… (Do professional people not proofread anymore?)

Kaleidoscope themselves have apparently colourised these clips, so I suspect that they’ve used their usual guy rather than someone who works on the BBC releases. Although there’s a possibility that it’s a cover for a larger BBC project, I suspect that the animus between Paul V and the head of Kaleidoscope make that collaboration extremely unlikely. (If there is an official BBC project, I predict a comparison with undertones of sneer – whether justified or not.)

    • Gordon

      July 16th, 2023 - 10:11pm

Found out that the bbc aren’t involved with doing the colourisation. It is kaleidoscope themselves. I suspect this project that Peter Crocker has just finished is either surviving footage from a story that is being animated or for a special edition of some sort. As I said previously as it’s away to be announced in the next couple of weeks it’s way too soon to be a collection set.

  • Jake E

    July 14th, 2023 - 6:54pm

I’m curious how they will fit so much stuff onto 9 discs only!

I could be wrong but doesn’t enlightenment have 3 versions now including this new CGI version yet it looks to be 1 disc judging by the photo?

I hope they can pull this off without compression issues etc. It looks like Five Doctors got a massive 3 discs unless one of them is a Bonus Features only disc

    • Gordon

      July 14th, 2023 - 9:06pm

The new 2023 effects for enlightenment are on the episodic version of it so technically it’s only 2 versions of the story that is included. They only need 2 versions as you switch it on or off by pressing a button and it works via branching.

    • Jake E

      July 14th, 2023 - 10:18pm

Ah yes Gordon totally forgot that some of the special CGI is seamless. I’ve been watching Day of the Daleks Special Edition which is a separate disc.

Still that’s 3+ hours (equivalent of 8 episodes) without special features on a single disc but it might be ok then

The previous reedit will probably just be in SD as well, so only a couple of GB of space used.

I notice that the Amazon price has gone up again compared to previous boxsets. I presume that this is due to a mixture of factors, such as inflation, larger disc content, and the release of the standard editions.

£39.99, £44.99, £49.99 and now £54.99. If I’m not mistaken and the £44.99 one was only a couple sets ago so like the beginning of last year unless I’m totally misremembering.

So yep inflation has done some crazy stuff. I think £54.99 is here to stay even if Season 25 for example ends up being on 6 discs. In fact I would fully expect the price to be £60+ by the end of the range. It’s worth it to me even if they double haha 🙂 as long as they keep doing everything they can to make the best product possible and don’t miss anything out or cut corners

Just wondering people’s thoughts on whether we need a third version of The Five Doctors and how different it can be from the last version. I’ve always preferred the 1995 special edition over the original as its the first one I watched when I purchased in the boxset with The King’s Demons. In my opinion, the special edition is edited together in a much more logical order…

I also can’t quite see the point of doing another version of ‘The Five Doctors’. It may be interesting to watch, but at first glance at the Time Scoop in the trailer, I think the 1995 version will still be the better version.

I think if there was going to be any place I’d put the Keeper of Traken/Four to Doomsday studio footage, it’d be Season 20 as it’s the closest season available, and it makes more sense being an early 1980s set. I’m not thrilled on the idea of it going to a Wilderness Years set when it’s not Wilderness Years content.

    • Gordon

I’d imagine this set is rammed as it is for content. Might not fit. Suppose they could keep the 4 to doomsday for caves as it’s the last Peter story. Keeper is a bit trickier as I don’t really see anywhere to put it.

      July 15th, 2023 - 9:24am

The Keeper footage could go with Planet of Fire if they keep the Remembering Anthony Ainley doc with it (I don’t think they’ve moved it to an existing set, have they?). I’m assuming it includes his first appearances in the DW studio, and not just footage of everyone else.

Well regarding future releases. Maybe we will have two a year from now on. Say season 16 and the biggie season 6 next year. Say season 25 ( sorry Bobby for not regarding it as a biggie!) the biggie Season 11 with CGI and full colour for dinosaurs and maybe Spiders CGI for 2025.

This run won’t end for like 6 years or later (2029+), I’ll be 29 years old by then if that’s true haha.

I love this and I don’t want the reveals etc to end but maybe have this done by the end of 2026/27 would be nice 🙂

@Jake E I will turn 40 in 2027. After owning some of the VHS and most of the DVD range, I will be glad that all of classic Who will have been offered as a Season set. I don’t intend on buying them all, but I am cherry picking my favourites and I will just be happy to have what I have.

Some of us unfortunately can not regenerate as we have come to the end of our cycle….. i have watched the Dr from the start , so that means im over 60….. i have collected all the Bluray classic box sets , and am hoping that i will live long enough to get to see them all released, ( and quickly ) before i go home to Gallifrey. On the bright side, now i have a REASON to live ! 🙂

My guess is NOVEMBER. Between Season 2 getting announced and released was roughly 4 months. I think this set will be the 2nd and last for this year

It did mention ‘birthday treats’ in the trailer. So while I know this is the ‘birthday year’, it could very well imply November.

Someone commented something similar yesterday but….

Do you think as they managed an entire 3 new CGI stories for this season that CGI Dinosaurs in Season 11 is a real possibility now?

      July 14th, 2023 - 9:10am

Hopefully, they only need to colourise one episode for the whole of season 11 (Part 1 Invasion of the Dinosaurs) so there will be more than enough budget to go with updated dinosaur effects

    • Gordon

      July 14th, 2023 - 9:18am

All depends on how expensive it will be to colourise ep1. Considering colour recovery won’t be fully possible a colourised version could end up costing a good chunk of the budget for season 11. Plus it’s a bit early to say that the 3 cgi stories would be on the same cost scale as invasion of the dinosaurs as we haven’t seen fully what has been done to them yet. Invasion of the dinosaurs would probably be the biggest ever challenge for the team in terms of number of shots and variety of assets that would need created.

    • Philip Shaw

      July 14th, 2023 - 11:25am

The Dinosaurs don’t appear a lot and it’s mainly the T rex which is the most pitiful. Then if that works out well they can tackle the Skarasan for Terror of the zygons! Personally I’d like it full colour more if we can’t have both.

I think they toned down the spiders in ‘planet of the spiders’ so won’t make them more realistic again.

Who doesnt love the T rex moonwalk?

    • Rex Farrel

      July 14th, 2023 - 1:19pm

There are many freeware models of dinosaurs and London buildings available, so that would save a fair bit. It’s certainly much easier now than it was when the dvd came out, and, in the nicest possible way, the cgi they use on these sets isn’t the highest standard to achieve (but still makes a lot of people happy). With the dino models already available it could look better than most of the previous cgi upgrades.

    • Who is who?

      July 14th, 2023 - 5:28pm

people have been working on various options for effects for dinos for years, i think mick tucker was looking at models rather than cgi at one point

    • Jake E

      July 14th, 2023 - 6:50pm

@Who is who? Well I mean if they can pull off somehow replacing them with new models go for it. I prefer practical effects to CGI anyway 🙂

    July 14th, 2023 - 12:07am

If this gets a release in summer then I imagine we will only get 2 sets this year. I think 3 sets might be too much of an ask for the team. We might get a surprise with Season 16 but I think Season 16 will open next year and Season 6 will be later in 2024. I might be wrong but I just have a feeling.

Depending on when this is out they might be able to sneak out another release before the year is out. If it’s September I could see another set sneaking out in december. Season 20 was such a big set in terms of content and putting it all together I suspect the next season will be a smaller affair so they can recharge their batteries and thus the gap would be shorter. season 16 would fit that perfectly.

The season is already extremely well regarded in terms of extras. Just really a Mary tamm tribute and a kroll making of missing (even though the latter is probably unlikely due to the lack of contributors available and the ones that are having nothing positive to say on it) Tom already is on all the commentaries for s16 so he’s unlikely to record a new one either (after his performance on the destiny commentary I think it’s wise not to) and pretty much all the archival stuff from that season was already on the original DVDs. Suppose we could get a John leeson interview and lalla ward (if they had one done before she immigrated). Behind the sofa could be Tom and John but I suppose it’s all up to if Tom is able and willing. He wasn’t on the sofa for 17. If not that could make things tricky. As for new cgi no amount of cgi will make kroll a better story so I feel pirate planet would be a better choice.

After 16 they can move on to 6. It’s probably likely to be a 60s set and we haven’t a Troughton set so it would fit perfectly. Might be a bit of a struggle to get out by the start of April 2024 though (found out recently they count the year as a financial year so it’s from April to April for them)

    • Prowl 1701

      July 14th, 2023 - 7:37am

You would need an Avengers: Endgame level budget to make Kroll look good, lol. Was Tom’s audio commentary that bad on 17? I haven’t listened to it. I also would like Pirate Planet to get some updated effects, would really help make the story a 10/10, or 9/10 for me.

    • Gordon

      July 14th, 2023 - 8:26am

Simply put Tom agreed to do a commentary with Toby hadoke for episode 1 and 4 of destiny of the daleks but on the day just before filming he told Toby he had no interest in talking about it. The commentary for ep1 is pretty much a ramble about his early days growing up in Liverpool and religion. It’s a nice chat but nothing connected with what was going on screen. Toby does try and head things in the right direction but he had no chance. Tom didn’t even seem to know when this story was as he thought it was early on his reign.

I certainly think they could only be two next year. With as last year, with season 6 coming out around June time. It would certainly make sense for season 16 as a quickie release, so we can get three this year. They have certainly made probably the dullest (but not the poorest) eighties season into a fantastic box set . Make the release soon please.

It’s definitely my favourite artwork for the back cover so far. My favourite front cover so far is either Season 12, 14, or 18. Although I wish the colours for the earlier sets were as saturated as the colours are from Season 22 onwards.

Season 9 then Season 22 are my fav front covers so far. Season 20 is easily the best back cover.

I quite like the simplicity of the early sets when I look at them. Having said that I would never want them to go back to doing it that way because the saturation now is sooo sweet 🙂

    Another truly fantastic trailer.

Really wonderfully filmed and beautifully performed by Janet. I always thought the Mara stories were the real highlight of the Davison series. The trailer is better than many of the stories on the set I think! But all of them will be lifted by the sheer amount of extras as ever.

I love that these sets make me appreciate stories (even whole seasons) I didn’t particularly like at the time.

Particularly looking forward to the new special edition of ‘Five Doctors’ which looks great from the clips. Can’t wait!

Regarding the next box set season. I am pretty sure that season 24 was announced before season 8 was released. So we could get another announcement before 20 is released. It good news that Gary Russell is working more animations, but I do hope that some are to complete stories that may have recently returned missing episodes.we live in hope.
