Doctor Who Fury from the Deep DVD
Available to order in the UK from www.amazon.co.uk or www.zoom.co.uk
Available to order in Australia from www.sanity.com.au
BBC Studios can reveal artwork and extras for Doctor Who: Fury From The Deep starring Patrick Troughton as The Doctor. The new animated release will be available on DVD, Blu-ray and Steelbook from 14th September 2020. Pre-orders are available now from Amazon, HMV and Zoom.
Following the success of existing animations The Power of the Daleks, The Faceless Ones, Shada and The Macra Terror, Fury From The Deep fills another gap in missing Doctor Who content lost in the purge of the BBC’s archive in 1975.
The three-disc release gives fans the opportunity to enjoy Fury From The Deep in high definition, either in full colour or in black & white. The release will include the surviving clips from the original 1968 production as well.
Fury From The Deep is told across six episodes and stars Frazer Hines and Deborah Watling. The storyline concerns a colony of sentient, parasitic seaweed, last seen in the eighteenth century, returning to attack a number of gas instillations in the North Sea in an attempt to take over humanity.
The reversible cover…
Animated episodes from Big Finish Creative Limited in association with Digitoonz Media & Entertainment and Thaumaturgy are joined by a wealth of exciting extras.
A making-of featurette ‘The Cruel Sea – Surviving Fury From The Deep’ sees original cast members Frazer Hines, June Murphy and Brian Cullingford revisit filming locations with production assistant Michael Briant, assistant floor manager Margot Hayhoe and helicopter pilot Mike Smith. Other contributors to this segment include writer Victor Pemberton and actress Deborah Watling. There’s also an archive audio interview with director Hugh David.
Additional material includes:
- Audio commentaries
- The Cruel Sea – Surviving Fury From The Deep
- Original surviving footage
- Behind The Scenes 8mm footage
- Animating Fury From The Deep
- Archive interviews with Peter Day and Victor Pemberton
- Teaser Trailer

August 4th, 2020 - 3:51pmSo I wonder when we can expect the next animation announcement?
Macra Terror announcement
5 December 2018
Release Date
25 March 2019
Faceless Ones announcement
4 June 2019
Release Date
16 March 2020
Fury From the Deep announcement
27 October 2019
Scheduled Release Date
14 September 2020
That’s 3 announcements in less than a year, and we haven’t had one for over 9 months now. COVID obviously hasn’t helped, but I wonder if we can expect another announcement by the end of the year?? Same for the blu ray sets, no new announcement since February!

August 8th, 2020 - 9:09pmWhat’s next after ‘Fury’? I think another two releases will be available next year. Likely one from each of the animation companies. I reckon Charles Norton’s crew will animate ‘The Evil of the Daleks’ next, and ‘Big Finish Creative’ will animate ‘The Abominable Snowmen’. That’s purely my prediction and with no insider knowledge.

August 9th, 2020 - 1:27amWith 2 animation teams on the go and now running and releases being planned probably every 6 months or so they won’t need to announce things so far in advance. Probably won’t hear anything till November December time for a March release and it’s probably gonna be evil. The animations are done remotely from People’s homes so there shouldn’t be a problem completing the animation.
The collection sets could all depend on if they can get the next set finished or not. I’m hopeful with power out of the way and them spending this week on fury it may free up some time in the next couple of weeks to get some sort of announcement. If we don’t hear anything by the end of September we may not get another release this year

August 13th, 2020 - 12:25pmThey seem to be doing only Troughtons though.
Would love them to do something like The Mythmakers or The Smugglers.

August 15th, 2020 - 9:17amHistorical stories being animated are highly unlikely I’m afraid. That rules out much of the missing Hartnell era getting animated.

August 27th, 2020 - 1:40pmLooks like my instinct was right! ‘Evil of the Daleks’ and ‘Abominable Snowmen’ look likely to be the two stories being animated at present.

August 3rd, 2020 - 10:22pmGot to admit it’s looking like a smashing release. Both a black and white and colour animation. A telesnap reconstruction with the option of narration by Fraser Hines. Mark Ayers has confirmed that it will include a 5.1 mix. A Commentary of some description. A making of the story and a separate making of for the animation. We are even getting production subtitles on animated episodes for the first animation since the invasion and Richard bignell has confirmed its by Martin wiggins. he also confirmed the teaser is just for fury. Restored clips and archive interviews With Peter Day and Victor Pemberton. The slide audio Photo gallery and pdf files. This feels very special. I actually quite like the cover. It gives a horror b movie type vibe. Gary Russell said he was going to go for a scarier feel and the cover goes for this direction. It feels like a very special release.Only thing really missing is the Tom Baker narrated audiobook however looking at the disc space there may have not have been space for it.

August 3rd, 2020 - 11:52pmHave to agree Gordon it does seem impressive. It is a shame about the Tom Baker, especially after his potd version was on. Got to admit not to keen on these animated covers but its just a cover and the content is more important. And the content looks great.

August 4th, 2020 - 12:08amNormally I don’t care for the standard release art for the animations and just get the steelbook, but I do actually like the art for this one so I many double dip and get the standard release too (I’ve had the steelbook on preorder since it was announced.). I actually enjoy the power SE art and bought it so the standard release of fury would fit well next to it.

August 4th, 2020 - 8:22amThey can add the Tom baker narrated Audiobook of Fury from the deep when the season 5 blu ray boxset is released so it doesn’t really matter that’s it’s missing as we have plenty of other great stuff on this release

August 3rd, 2020 - 11:36pmBooboo months is more accurate for older Who. Season 14 BluRay is only coming out tomorrow here in NA despite being available for at least six months in the UK (yes I know they sold out but still). I’m not complaining, just rather miffed as it would have helped pass time in quarantine. Honestly seeing as I only use my Blu Ray player for Doctor Who now, I may just purchase the region 2 of ‘Fury from the Deep’ when it comes out in UK and re-set my player. The half-a-year wait is becoming increasingly frustrating. Yes I know the market here isn’t as big as across the pond with all of you but I find that my interest is completely dead by the time they are released here. ‘Faceless Ones’ isn’t even coming out until October 20th over here (according to amazon)!!
Sorry Booboo. Don’t mean to rant. Just saying that despite it being more expensive, it’s probably just easier in the long run to find a cheap second-hand Bluray player and set it to Region 2 (UK) and just buy the UK releases and watch it that way. The only other option is to find a TARDIS and hop forward 6 months!! XD

Gordon
August 4th, 2020 - 11:30amBecause it won’t be visible in shops. It would also confuse some people thinking there is an alternative cover version available to buy and they may skip the normal cover version. People may also ask is there any differences to the 2 covers content wise.

August 4th, 2020 - 11:55amI would ask the question as a collector to make sure it matches my other dvds so I think it is reasonable to ask without having a snotty remark!

August 4th, 2020 - 12:13pmHere’s a point. If it doesn’t have a reversible cover then it doesn’t have a reversible cover and that’s that. Whether it matches or not it’s important it’s the content that is important. Doctor who fans have been spoilt by the BBC as they have provided matching cover styles for 20 years now. They really didn’t have to. But they did. For me if they don’t provide a reversible cover it won’t adversely affect my life. I collect mainly books and I have very few series or authors that completely match. Different sizes. Different cover styles. Different spine colours, author name size title size. It’s just one of those things. I look at my collection and it’s a sea of different colours and sizes. My DVD collection is the same. Different colours and fonts on the spines. We have been spoilt as who fans. But it’s pretty much moot. This will have a reversible cover. Why would they stop now?

August 3rd, 2020 - 2:42pmVery happy! Hopefully the cover will be reversible!
Only disappointment is that the Tom Baker narrated audiobook isn’t included, but it is nice to have “The Slide”.
The Evil Dalek
August 3rd, 2020 - 2:02pmFor anyone not knowing, The Slide was the original version of Fury from the Deep that Victor Pemberton offered to Doctor Who during Season 2 but was turned down by David Whitaker who didn’t like the script. But at the same time, Pemberton also offered it to BBC Radio Drama which was over seen by Peter Bryant, who commissioned it. Later, Peter Bryant became the Script Editor for Season 5 and he hired Victor Pemberton to be his assistant. When Bryant was offered the role of producer, he offers Pemberton the role of script editor which Pemberton kindly declined, stating he wanted to get back into freelance writing. So, wanting to use Pemberton’s services and fondly remembering The Slide, Bryant asked Pemberton if he could submit an updated version of The Slide for Doctor Who which Pemberton happily agreed. The new version of The Side would become The Colony of Devils and later, Fury from the Deep

May 10th, 2020 - 6:36amNo one really wants Underwater Menace in a very basic telesnap version? Surely they would do the missing B&W episodes animations, we don’t need to have 4 colour episodes either, just to help it flow like previous releases
Error
May 14th, 2020 - 3:47amI would agree with the idea that four color-animated episodes would not be necessary, but if they want to use Loose Cannon for that episode instead of animation, that should be fine. Both ways work. Without Loose Cannon, the animation isn’t even possible. What’s surprising that the Crusade doesn’t have a DVD release since it’s only missing half of its episodes.
Gordon
May 14th, 2020 - 11:38amCrusade is far too expensive and time consuming at present and has about 3 stories worth of Characters sets and costumes of animation to create. Plus after the success of the animations I don’t think they have any interest in making any more main feature releases where the gaps are filled with telesnaps
Error
March 31st, 2020 - 7:40pmI wonder if they’re planning on doing all the Troughton’s, including this one, The Evil of the Daleks, The Wheel in Space, The Space Pirates, and The Highlanders.
Don’t really need to worry about the Web of Fear and the Underwater Menace due to their DVD releases.

May 10th, 2020 - 9:25amI think it is likely we’ll get evil, snowmen, wheel and due to them having iconic villains, I’d like to think that we’d see Highlanders as it is Frazer Hines’ first story but we’ll see about the tartan, space pirates might be hindered by its poor fan reception but could be reappraised if animated similar to how enemy of the world was when the lost episodes were found. Underwater may also be left a while as it already has a DVD release, however power is now getting tweaks and improvements before all the other stories that haven’t got an animation or dvd release so who knows…
Gordon
May 10th, 2020 - 12:36pmEvil abominable and wheel all have good chances of being animated. They all have memorable monsters plus 2 of them have companions debut stories. Underwater menace had a dvd release but the dvd had a reconstruction which was not up to anybody’s par. Even the person that made the reconstruction wanted something better for it but however was instructed otherwise by those that was in charge at the time. It’s time for a revisit and animation should finally happen for it. If web 3 doesn’t turn up I can see them animating it (it’s only 1 ep) in the next couple of years to give us a complete season 5. Space pirates isn’t popular but there is no telesnaps to do any sort of decent recon so an animation might be the best way forward with it. That just leaves the highlanders. Charles norton described it as too complex. Part of the problem I hear is that there is so much tartan all of which would need to get animated by hand. It’s also a historical which is a tougher sell especially after the reign animation did extremely poorly sales wise. It may get done some day (they are going to run out of easy animations at some point) but it won’t be soon
Error
May 14th, 2020 - 3:53amWasn’t the Reign of Terror a poorly received episode in the first place? It’s too bad for me because I thought it was the best episode of that first season of Doctor Who… oh well.

March 2nd, 2020 - 11:26amI know it’s a pointless thing, but is anyone else at all annoyed that the covers aren’t consistent with the layout of the rest of the classic era? February 24th, 2020 - 1:31pmnice to see fury from the deep being released i wonder if wheel in space will be released as a dvd maybe this year or next
Gordon
February 25th, 2020 - 12:52amIt’s been mentioned at the Gallifrey 1 convention that the hope is to do 2 animations a year. As we already have faceless ones and fury from the deep so it definitely won’t be this year. Think there is a 50/50 chance next year. Fairly certain the next animation from the faceless team is evil due to how faceless ends on a cliffhanger and it follows directly on from faceless plus it’s a fairly easy animation in terms of characters and sets. As for the next animation from the fury team it could either be abominable or wheel. Abominable has the same tardis team as fury and has the smallest cast and sets of any of the troughton’s outside of web 3. Gary russell who heads up the fury animation was asked about abominable on twitter and he said he’d love to do it 1 day but let’s see the reaction to fury first. Alternatively Wheel does follow on from fury so it could be a possibility next but they may want the team that’s tackling the faceless ones to do it as it would be the same team that did the minisode a few years back which would mean an early 2022 release date if they do that after evil. Think it’s very likely within the next 3 years especially if they are sticking with the Troughton era.
Peter

October 29th, 2019 - 9:37am2021 it is most likely to be abominable snowman and wheel in space because they are close to do season 5 and of the do animate those stories we can have a Troughton season set
Gordon
October 29th, 2019 - 10:25amI would think that evil and wheel are more likely as they follow on from faceless ones and fury. The stories chosen aren’t influenced in any way by the box set releases.
The 14th Doctor

October 28th, 2019 - 7:30amI am hoping they will animate all the missing episodes and The Collection will be complete. I was struggling, cause If they will include the animations in the Collection then I will have doubles, but I feel good to pay them for the animated Blu-Rays now, cause I feel like they have the money to do it (they have a studio now and two teams working on animation, so we can have two per year), so I feel like I helped a little.
Gonna need to sell the standalone Blu-Rays if the Collection will get here.
Gordon
October 28th, 2019 - 8:10amAt least 2022 at a minimum I would think. Maybe 2023. All depends on which stories are done next.
