Eve of the Daleks

Welcome to the New Year’s Eve from hell. Sarah is working – again. Nick is her only customer – again. Same old, same old. Except this year, their countdown to midnight will be the strangest and deadliest they’ve ever known. Why is an Executioner Dalek targeting these two people, in this place, on this night? Why are they having to live through the same moments over and over? Can the Doctor, Yaz and Dan save them and will everybody survive into the New Year?

Legend of the Sea Devils

Swashbuckle your seatbelts – the Doctor is back for an action-packed adventure as she comes face to fin with one of her oldest adversaries: the Sea Devils! Beneath the oceans of the 19th century lurk terrifying forces. Why has legendary pirate queen Madam Ching come searching for a lost treasure in a remote coastal village?

The Doctor, Yaz and Dan must battle deadly sea monsters, flying pirate ships and a plan that will threaten the entire planet, in Jodie Whittaker’s penultimate story as the Doctor.

Mine came today, I know I know, however a bit of a completionist – it comes in a slip cover like the others.

That is one lazy cover. Clearly BBC Marketing just phoned it in on a Friday afternoon…

The cover looks fine apart from the really jarring join between the two posters. At least blend it together somehow or shove a flair over the top

Love the way they did the split cover top and bottom, with logo in the middle. Like Genesis/sontaran expetiment VHS ( thats aged me

A lot of people seem to be holding off for all three specials in one pack. Remember that special 3 is not just a DW special, its a BBC 100 anniversary special,at 90mins ( from all accounts) I imagine it will be released ubder the BBC 100 centenary logo, part of other releases from that Branding. So treated more like the five Doctors has been.

There might be a season 13 complete collection at some point in 2023 but Its not always happened like that, plus there will be lots of Anniversary merchandise for 2023,so maybe not a complete s13.

Going to hang fire and hope that they release all the specials in one set.

Unless it is something said on an extra or commentary can’t really understand why either story should be rated 12.

  • MJS

    April 21st, 2022 - 1:55pm

Bit pointless isn’t it when there’s another episode to go? Unless they plan to release the centenary episode as a stand alone. But hey ho, they did the same with the tenant specials then released a box set.

      April 28th, 2022 - 9:40am

The Centenary special is going to be feature-length so I guess that’s why it’s separate.

    April 21st, 2022 - 1:54pm

I’m harbouring a deep suspicion that we’ll be getting a “Complete 13th Doctor” release post-regeneration with everything in it, maybe even Redacted. I may well be wrong!

Probably this time next year, and probably just on the US market, as they previously did Doctors 10-12.

I wonder why they didnt just release Eve and Legend separately or wait until the Centenary Special and release a 2022 specials box set

as mentioned many times that was Amazon UK picking up the Warner USA release which is linked to above. Its nothing to do with any UK release.

    April 20th, 2022 - 5:45pm

For the first time I’ll be skipping this until we (hopefully) get a complete specials set for Jodie. Unfortunately I didn’t enjoy either of these stories; neither was particularly bad, they were just dull. I’m sincerely hoping that the Centenary Special will deliver, Jodie deserves a great final episode and it would be nice to Chibnall to leave on a slight high (of sorts) considering how much of his Who has been received. Some of his episodes have been amazing, but it seems very much all or nothing with his writing. Hopefully, and I believe from the trailers it will, the special in November will blow everything else he has done out of the water.

    • Doctor Stu

      April 20th, 2022 - 6:10pm

There’s way too many plot threads for him to wrap up, and then he’s bringing Vinder back, ace, Tegan, he’s got to introduce the Daleks, cybermen, explain Ashad, do a whole Master Story, Kate and unit and then a regeneration. Possibly bring up and bring to a close the timeless child arc or even ignore it completely, then wrap up an exit for Dan and bring to close Yaz and the Doctors (completely out of nowhere) romance.

We saw what happened with the end of flux, that was a colossal rushed mess. Mainly due to him needlessly turning his timeless child story into a sontaran invasion story out of nowhere and then leaving himself with absolutely no time to sort out the actual series arc. I will never understand that decision making

But all in all, no. I don’t expect the centenary will blow anything out of the water. His trailers always look good, then the actual episode happens. I’m expecting more of the same, disjointed, badly acted, mediocre music, crammed in poorly executed romance, rushed plot, needless characters, poor viewing figures and then it’ll end. And we can all breathe a sigh of relief until the 60th

      April 20th, 2022 - 7:05pm

I never understand why fans like Doctor Stu want the series to fail.

    • DPHill

      April 20th, 2022 - 7:59pm

I don’t think this at all what they said they wanted

    • Doctor Stu

      April 20th, 2022 - 8:39pm

It’s already failed. More people watched the antiques roadshow and the show got the lowest viewing figures of its history. It’s embarrassing to admit you watch it nowadays. New who is a complete flailing husk of its original self. RTD however will turn it around, everything he touches turns to gold and is an immediate award winner. So no, I don’t want the show to fail at all. I just want this god awful blip to be over so I can get back to actually enjoying it. Such an unnecessarily bad stain on the Doctor who tapestry.

    • Dalekz

      April 21st, 2022 - 1:21am

I don’t belive it’s failed at all to be honest, lots of people still watch it and love it as I do.
If you didn’t like it thats fine but not everybody thinks the same and they enjoy it.
This era has been important because jodie has been a great Doctor especally for fans like my daughter who now has her own Doctor to aspire to.

I’m not saying every story was great but every era has it’s down sides and upsides.
RTD is great but I disliked a good few of them for many reasons and that goe’s for Moffet too as he was all over the place at times which put me off the show for a bit. For me Jodie’s era made it fun again.

      April 21st, 2022 - 10:15am

I don,t place much credence in viewing figures. The faithful fan will watch it watch it regardless and make up their own mind what they percieve to be what is working and what isnt. Its only a worry when its officially cancelled. People will miss her or be glad to see the back of her. Whether her finale will work or tie up all those loose ends in the centenary is yet to be seen but I would say unlikely given all the characters to deal with in such a short running time. We are at a huge turning point and Its going to take some massive promotion and word of mouth to get it back to being ‘event’ and mainstream television again. I believe viewing figures should peak for Jodies finale even if people just tune into her final moments to see her regenerate. Then its up to ‘King Midas’ Russell to build up that Anniversary and beyond with which we wait with bated breath. All that and weve still the announcement and unveiling of the actor to fill this iconic role.

      April 21st, 2022 - 12:19pm

When line of duty gets average 10 million and ITV dramas steal the ratings then there’s definitely an issue. Especially when a repeat of antiques roadshow got more viewing figures. They might not mean as much as they used to but they’re definitely still something that it’s important otherwise where does this go? If the show gets 900,000 viewers are we all still saying ‘oh that’s fine viewing figures don’t matter anymore’. The chase does better, tipping point as well. It got a million more viewers than loose women gets. I mean? This is not good at all. RTD’s going to struggle to fix this without a very long and well done promotional campaign.

    • The ergon

      April 21st, 2022 - 1:29pm

Youre talking primetime dramas, gameshows and comfortable weekend tv that your average viewer or household will watch anyway whether the format is ‘if it aint broke dont fix it. Doctor who is more niche than ever. It is as someone recently mentioned now become part of the furniture and nobody but the ardent fan seems that interested anymore.

    • Anomalous

      April 21st, 2022 - 1:38pm

The only people who pay attention to viewing figures are fans who want to prove their point. Production companies don’t pay attention to viewing figures they are an outmoded thing. Who is still popular. Who is still successful. No doubt the same people will turn on Davies at the first sign of him doing something different.

    • The ergon

      April 21st, 2022 - 1:48pm

      All hail the second coming.

    • Dalekz

      April 22nd, 2022 - 12:40am

Viewing figures only sample selected people, I watch every single episode of Doctor Who but I do not count towards those figures because I’m not part of the viewing figures system.
There will be many others who watch every week but they don’t count as part of the total unless they are monitored by whatever means they do it by (Is it a black box under the TV not a clue?)

Viewing figures mean even less when you talk about overnights because people don’t plonk themselves down to watch things live like they used to.

Just wait until RTD2 people will complain about EVERYTHING! all over again, it’s what some fans do. Look what Star Wars fans did to their thing.

      April 22nd, 2022 - 9:39am

can i ask, Is that just over 2 million Consolidated?

  • Paul

    April 20th, 2022 - 4:00pm

As much as I’ve enjoyed many of the chibnal era and Jodies time as the doctor i feel very let down in terms of the content on the dvds.
The bonus content which has always been a big selling point when dw came back in 05 and many people buy a series set off the back of the amount of new bonus material and special features and extras but now we are limited to content that we have already seen on the DW YouTube channel and maybe 2 commentaries per series. Who makes these decisions towards what goes on to the dvd as a extra feature?
I’ve collected all the steel books from a completeness point of view but it still annoys me that no effort went into the dvd extras. If you think back to when RTD was show runner, there would be so many dvd extras and commentaries and if memory serves me right I’m sure we got different commentaries on the old bbc dw website and the dvd. My only hope is that if a complete Jodie boxset does eventually come out then hopefully we get treated to a lot more extras and bonus features then we had no each series release.

    • JR

      April 20th, 2022 - 4:50pm

I know that the generous RTD extras were connected to both the series’ budget – which was greater than Moffat’s – and money which was floating around the BBC, allowing them to create all the games, fake websites, Adventure Calendars, etc.Having said that, the paltry bits and pieces we get these days are hardly an incentive to purchase the blu-rays. Maybe if we wait ten years, the new series will get the “The Collection” treatment!

    • Paul

      April 20th, 2022 - 5:38pm

Yes you are right that the chibnal era has had a paltry amount of dvd extras.
It’s a absolute joke that the people who produce these sets weather it be the standard or steelbook think they are doing the fans a favour by adding YouTube videos. Do they really think that the fans would of not watched the YouTube videos when they dropped?
If what you are saying in a nutshell that it’s down to money then it’s sad that it has come to this but i would love to hear straight from the horses mouth and ask chibnal why the lack of bonus features now. Makes me curious to wonder now that when RTD takes back over will we go back to the old days of exclusive bonus material and lots of extras and commentaries.

    • JR

      April 20th, 2022 - 7:13pm

Paul, I agree that gifting us videos and bits and pieces we’ve seen is a poor show but the production office has no say over the commercial releases. Separate budgets and departments. I don’t see that changing for the next series – RTD benefited from all the extra cash the Beeb had sloshing around at the time but that’s long gone. There may be a wholly new marketing strategy for his new series – there are lots of rumours about big changes to the format, re. episode numbers and lengths – which will suddenly demand lots of commentaries but I wouldn’t place any bets!

i am hoping for a complete box set of the last 10 episodes of the 13th doctor instead of the individual releases

    • Anonymous

      April 21st, 2022 - 1:54am

I have no problem with the BBC releasing DVD’s separately for the Doctor Who series, so that funds can be available to produce more. I don’t mind buying the individual release’s as they come out so that I can watch them. But I do wish that after all the individual sales that they then release a boxset of the complete run. I too am holding out for a complete set of Eve, Flux & the 3 Specials…

      April 20th, 2022 - 1:50pm

Yes, the last release was in poor card packaging.

    • Gareth Pugh

      May 1st, 2022 - 6:56pm

The funny thing is – certainly in the CD business although it happens relatively less these days – quite often, an album would be issued in a standard plastic ‘jewel case’ and as a ‘deluxe’ card package – and the industry belief is that the card pack (sometimes called a soft pack or a ‘mint’ pack) is actually the one fans would/should see as more premium or desirable. I mean, for the classic Who BluRay ‘Collection’ sets I do prefer the limited edition boxes, but to be fair, some fans genuinely find the new ‘standard edition’ blue plastic Amaray case packaging more to their taste.
