Character Options is pleased to announce the next wave of Doctor Who figures for summer 2022, scheduled to land in B&M stores in September (but down to B&M when they put them out).

Each new addition to this line forms part of the 5.5” figure range and features new decoration as well as multiple points of articulation. The new sets come packaged in the familiar ‘heritage’ style Doctor Who collector packs; though, this time, there are a few changes that eagle-eyed fans might notice.

History of the Daleks 9 – ‘Planet of the Daleks’ (1973)

This duo of Dalek figures set is based on the Third Doctor’s battle with his greatest nemesis, on the planet Spiridon. The first Dalek figure from this set is the Supreme Dalek from this story.

This was a redressed ‘movie’ style prop but with some unconventional changes to its overall appearance. Nevertheless, finished in a gold and black colour scheme, and towering over the BBC props it was visually stunning and has remained a fan-favourite despite its limited screen-time. The second figure is the ‘Invisible Dalek’ from the story and is fully representative of a transparent Dalek!

Al Dewar Creative Director commented “I think and hope the fans and collectors will really like these new sets. We have really spent time updating the look of the figures to make them different. The Eighth Doctor set, especially the TV movie and NOTD figures are a real delight and have a much more sophisticated look, befitting a modern action figure. I think they are the best yet. The Tenth Doctor sets have a very different and fresh feel and come with two never released variants. The Dalek sets not only feature new packaging, but we have finally brought to the fans the Dalek Supreme and a fully transparent Dalek from Planet of the Daleks! And The Death to the Daleks set is also very close to my heart!”

Both Dalek sets look fantastic and I especially like the ‘Planet’ set. Yes it’s shame that they couldn’t continue with the dioramas – I can just picture a nice jungle image or the entrance to the Spiridon city. I was also looking forward to seeing what they came up with for the Tom Baker History sets. However budgets are clearly tight and it’s the Daleks that are the important thing.

I think the ‘light wave’ Dalek looks great fully transparent and nice the original release is still a distinctive one. I remember getting a few bargain twin packs in Toys R Us way back!

This is the set I’m going to have to prioritise, as I’m looking at the miserable near – certainty of none of these sets being available at my nearest B&Ms. As the clear winner in a disappointing wave, I’ll give Character credit at least for not splitting these models over two different sets.

10th Doctor Set – Dave I love you, but this is an easy pass. Probably get the 8th Doctor set, it’ll be nice to see all 3 figures boxed up, but would’ve been nicer if they’d boxed them “chronologically”. DTTD set – I’m not a Dalek completist, so whether I get this depends on how much I have to spend on the Supreme and Invisi-lek.

This Dalek figure set is the best of these four B&M releases

    So…

We nearly got both these Daleks (as sfx versions) 10 years ago but both were dropped from the wave.

Our pictures from the 2012 toy fair

      August 10th, 2022 - 11:05am

Why did they radically change the daleks in the SFX wave, for both waves?

    • booboo

      August 10th, 2022 - 11:16am

They were very much mock ups at the time, many items at the toy fair were.

I think retailers (or it might have been UT at the time) only wanted 5 in the wave not 7, the stealth went on to be a variant in the toys r us set.

I seem seem to remember wave 2 very nearly didn’t happen until UT took it on.

Oh I remember these. It must be a fascinating story, how figures are chosen, designed, all those little ‘extras’ only fans would appreciate, how they are marketed. I seem to recall the Age of Steel Cybermen set was originally advertised as the Men of Steel set? But i was very excited with the SFX Daleks and spent weeks chasing around London for them!

yes good times, we used to meat everyone back then, got good insight , how things have changed.

I cant believe that was 10 years ago. I would have been sitting infront of my laggy computer staring at these images with excitement. I can’t remember a time in my life when I wasn’t checking this site daily. Still do to this day

Amazing!! I was worried we’d never see another release of the beautiful, and expensive on the aftermarket, Supreme Dalek! and the fully transparent invisible Dalek is gorgeous.

This is a nice set, alongside the Death to the Daleks set. I will get this one for sure if I see it. However, I can’t deny I’m a bit disappointed with this years offerings. I’m guessing the 3 pack choices and the saddening lack of Al’s creative box art are signs of our current economic climate and that Al and his team have had a much smaller budget from B&M to play with?? I suppose we have just been spoilt this last 4 years or so with ever more ambitious sets, amazing and unexpected use of sculpts with new elements to make brand new characters we never thought we’d get. I really hope the good times aren’t over for good, and though I’m always grateful for CO’s output, I am a bit deflated at the packs revealed so far.

Another great set, the transparent dalek looks awesome, I was lucky to have got the 3rd Doctor/Dalek set from TRU and cant wait to add the fully invisible dalek to my collection

I am very happy that the Dalek sets are better than the 3 figure packs I think these might be the only figure I get this month other than the second Dalek set

Booboo – will we be getting notification when these are being shipped out to B&M stores, like we have with previous releases (with the map), or could these be out there already..?

  • Martino

I like this very much. I was hoping for a re-release of the Supreme Dalek, and here it is! I was hoping there were going to do a diorama of the Dalek ice storage facility too, but heigh ho.

  • Alan Silvester

    August 9th, 2022 - 4:13pm

Best set of a very disappointing “first-wave”. Less product (no background card) for more money. I hate to say it, but I fear for the sales of this range if CO don’t start varying it up a bit. So many missed opportunities with the figures announced today, that are basically lazy remoulds. Unlike previous years, I shall not be rushing to B&M for these.

      August 9th, 2022 - 4:15pm

I will for this set I have never had this supreme dalek

    • Martino

      August 9th, 2022 - 5:11pm

I don’t think there was very much the team could have done with the Daleks other than make them look a bit refreshed. But these (the Supreme here, and the two ‘Death’ Daleks) are also some of the most expensive Daleks to buy out there (40, 50, even 60 quid a pop each), so at the very least this is a great chance for new collectors to get hold of them at a very reasonable price per figure.

    • the Ergon

      August 9th, 2022 - 5:17pm

The Supreme is my all time favourite. that mix of gold, brown and purple is aesthetically pleasing to my eyes in the same way i adore the black and Silver on those ‘Death’ daleks.

  • Judooning

    August 9th, 2022 - 3:53pm

Gorgeous looking set. Good to have a variant of the lightwave Dalek which makes the origional more unique.
And my origional Supreme broke years ago with its done lights so I’m glad they’re giving us an updated one.

  • Philip Shaw

    August 9th, 2022 - 3:14pm

Hope they can now do a transparent ‘Stengos’ Dalek from Revelation!

    • Pusher

      August 10th, 2022 - 12:25am

Might wanna leave that space open for a skaro dalek re release, that boi has been neglected for such a long time, or alternatively lose the necros dalek, we have three versions anyway

    • Anonymous

      August 10th, 2022 - 9:33am

Or just do what seems to be a new trend starting this year and release the Stengos Dalek with Revelation Davros.

  • Persona

    August 9th, 2022 - 2:56pm

It will be interesting to see how much more durable those lights are on the Supreme compared to it’s original release. I broke the lights on the first one I got (I was a child at the time) but was luckily enough to purchase another Daleks Collector’s Set 1 and now that one sits pride of place next to my other supremes (Though interestingly some of the spheres were mot glued in and fell out of the packaging).

      August 10th, 2022 - 4:32pm

I’d heard about the hemispheres falling out – I’d always assumed they were part of a single mould and sprayed up to that point. Or was it a hang over from when some hemispheres used to be push buttons for the sound effects?

    • booboo

      August 10th, 2022 - 4:40pm

no separate but glued or have lugs to secure i believe, the screws that hold them together are behind some of them

    • Rex Farrel

      August 10th, 2022 - 10:31pm

Thanks Booboo. When I was younger I would have been taking them apart to explore, but I’m more cautious these days – partly because now it’s me paying for things!

    • booboo

      August 11th, 2022 - 7:52am

they can easily break sometimes if you try to remove them

  • Dalekz

    August 9th, 2022 - 2:42pm

This transparant Dalek is much better than the original if if hasn’t got the black paint on it as it can double as the glass dalek from “Revelation of the Daleks” which is great.
(As long as this is not just a prototype mock up where they forgot to use the finished one)
You can buy two and have an invisable one and a glass one, simple spray with some black paint will make the Invisable one more like the episode.
The Supreme is a great Dalek glad I can get this for a good price at last.

    • Boing

      August 9th, 2022 - 7:12pm

No it can’t as the Revelation Daleks were a different shape!

    • Mrs Croot

      August 9th, 2022 - 8:37pm

The revelation dalek was bigger than a dalek too, a dalek case around a dalek base with stengos inside that.

    • Rex Farrel

      August 10th, 2022 - 4:36pm

Boing: Character never worried about that did they? Just a one size fits all Dalek skirt.

  • pupbenny

    August 9th, 2022 - 2:27pm

This set is probably the best of the bunch, this is a really good set I think. Nice to have the Supreme Dalek rereleased (never had one of those) and the invisible Dalek is super cool! Suprised they never did one like that before! Would be pretty easily to paint and give a ‘half-invisible’ effect to for those who would want to I bet.

Made some nice improvements to the Supreme I think (from what I’ve read/can tell from pics). Maybe if I were to nitpick the lamp feels like it’s a bit too frosted but overall it looks pretty good.

    Really nice set.

That’s interesting, looks like they made it completely differently. Maybe a different kind of plastic?

    • booboo

      August 9th, 2022 - 2:41pm

will have to see this in hand, one of things against doing this was you could see all the screws and lugs that hold the thing together through the transparent moulding

  • Handles

    August 9th, 2022 - 2:13pm

Is there any time war (2005 version) daleks coming out there’s so many cool variants like the black and silver supreme from master audio

  • Alan

    August 9th, 2022 - 1:54pm

Will be hoping to find this. Really wanted the transparent dalek from the beginning and my supreme has gained a removable head

  • Mrs Croot

    August 9th, 2022 - 1:33pm

Good to see the unreleased invisible dalek getting a release, but now i’ll have to hunt down the paint version. In all honesty, worth it for the purple 3rd doctor. My supreme being destroyed by me as a careless child it’ll be good to get him again.

  • Peter C

    August 9th, 2022 - 1:26pm

This set looks good, but I hope the daleks are switched from what’s shown in the picture as the Supreme Dalek is covered by part of the box, which seems stupid when you consider the whole of the invisible dalek is shown, so to speak. Hope they get switched as the Supreme Dalek is a great design and if you leave them in the box, then you’d want to see that one. The Dalek sets do look great though. Hopefully get these without having to resort to eBay this time!

    • Anthony

No. Another victim of CO saving money. We are paying MORE for LESS product…

    • Dalek Eye Stalk

      August 9th, 2022 - 6:32pm

Makes the sets look cheaper and more basic compared to the first eight History of the Daleks figure releases.

  • Komati

    August 9th, 2022 - 12:50pm

It’s a shame that the mid section is not fully painted and that once again the gun has been painted silver. Also am I seeing things or has the mesh gotten a new sculpt?

      August 9th, 2022 - 12:51pm

oops, meant to comment that on the other dalek set
