Big Finish The Lone Centurion Volume 1

Rory Williams – The Lone Centurion!

Companion of the Eleventh Doctor, husband of Amy Pond, and guardian of the Pandorica for nearly two thousand years, Rory returns in his own full-cast audio series from Big Finish. Legend tells of the Lone Centurion — a mysterious figure dressed as a Roman soldier who stood guard over the Pandorica, warning off those who would attempt to open it; a constant warrior whose story appeared in the folk history of a dozen civilisations.

Only… he seems to have misplaced it.

The Lone Centurion volumes one and two are now available to pre-order as collector’s edition three-disc box sets or downloads from just £16.99 each, exclusively from

Arthur Darvill returns to reprise the character he first played on television in the 2010 Doctor Who story, The Eleventh Hour, in a brand new series of adventures taking Rory all over the world.

The Lone Centurion volume one contains three super stories:

Travelling to Rome in search of the Pandorica, Rory finds himself forced to perform as a gladiator in the Colosseum… where he attracts the attention of the Imperial household.

  • Gladiator by David Llewellyn
  • The Unwilling Assassin by Sarah Ward
  • I, Rorius by Jacqueline Rayner

Producer Scott Handcock said: “I’ve worked with Arthur on a few Big Finish projects before now, so I know first-hand how much he loves the audio medium. It’s one of the reasons we ended up doing Frankenstein together, where he gives an electric performance as Victor! It’s lovely when an actor wants to do more, but I knew he was nervous about revisiting Rory and upsetting established story arcs, which is how The Lone Centurion came about. “Set during the centuries he waits for the Pandorica to reopen, these stories allow us to explore new sides to the character while remaining true to his on-screen journey. As soon I started suggesting it to Arthur, I knew we were onto a winner…”

Actor Arthur Darvill agreed: “It seemed like an offer I couldn’t refuse. As soon as I read the scripts, I was like, ‘Oh well, they totally get it, they’ve really nailed his voice’. It’s been a lovely way to revisit it in a very different way to what it was, but to do something more with this character. It’s funny but also quite epic, which is so lovely with what you can do on audio: to have these huge stories which in another medium would break the budget!”

The Lone Centurion volumes one and two are now available to pre-orderas collector’s edition three-disc box sets or downloads from just £16.99 each. Volume one is due for release in May 2021, with volume two to follow in July 2022.

Big Finish listeners can save even more money by purchasing volumes one and two together in a bundle for just £38 on CD or £33 as a download. Additionally, to celebrate the announcement of this historic new series, Big Finish is also holding a flash sale on the Arthur Darvill back catalogue.

For a limited time, the following releases are available up to 50% off when bought directly from the Big Finish website.

  • Bernice Summerfield: Road Trip

Isn’t this Big Finish overkill? Will every character who ever appeared in Doctor Who get their own series of four box sets?

Coming soon from Big Finish Productions… 16 box sets featuring the Mother and Daughter who appeared in Dragonfire…

no, they have a whole series featuring just companions, this is no different

Not normally a Big Finish person, but this is cool.

I gave up buying Big Finish releases when they decided to go for quantity over quality. There seems to be no end to their ingenuity in creating yet more Doctor Who ranges. What next? The further adventures of The Fourth Doctor’s hat stand?

I cant believe Big Finish are doing a series about a Doctor Who companion! This is unprecedented. They really messed up this time!

You obviously haven,t heard of The companion chronicles then. How have they messed up? Rory became a very popular companion that has become one of the most beloved eras of the show. Why shouldn,t he have his own spin off in adventures unseen? Its working so well for other characters from New Who and these boxsets are selling well.

It’s annoying yes but you don’t have to buy all of them and they’re literally an audio business. They’re not just going to stop all production while you catch up

I think Jamie is being sarcastic regarding the original post. I can’t get enough of the wider DW universe, but I do struggle to allocate money to new releases. I end up going for the ‘event’ releases or sale items, due to the sheer cost of buying everything. But I’d rather have too much than too little, and if I have good fortune in life I will buy the lot. I liked Rory a lot but I won’t be able to buy it anytime soon, what with Out of Time, Time Lord Victorious, more Time War releases, Stranded on the horizon.

Theres loads coming out and i,m struggling to keep up but I am very selective. You have to be to accommodate the space. For me the TARDIS team with Amy and Rory is still my favourite of all Modern Who. I,d like to see all three back together doing something for the 60th.
I may order this with The First Doctor Adventures 5 next year. Like Big Finish I have to do things in advance. So I usually preorder 2 most wanted at a time. As long as they all aren,t Endless series’.

I agree, to much filler and not enough good writing.

Hells yes, super excited for this! Everyone loved Rory! It also makes perfect sense to have stories during the 2000 years.

Now this….is the content we need. Just a shame it’s not set in a time where we can explore him and River as she’s trapped in an exploding TARDIS. Moffat had the potential to explore the nuances of Amy and Rory’s relationship with their daughter who was older than them but never really bothered. There was the excuse for some great storytelling there, the kind of thing that RTD would have most definitely explored

Do you think with the cancellation of Big Finish Day, all the current announcements about releases were meant to be released then?

      June 12th, 2020 - 11:54pm

      Oohhh now that’s an idea

Probably yes, I would have excepted Masterful cover to have been saved for then and definitely the Roberts set.

It’s always hard because even know Big Finish day is a day they normally spread the announces over a few days before hand so people can ask about them and they can give more info during the con

It would be nice to see a Rory/River story, the TV series completely lacked their relationship, it would be nice to see it explored sometime at Big Finish

I usually avoid the “companion” releases, but I love Matt Smith era DW and will have to fight extra hard not to buy these.

    June 12th, 2020 - 5:56pm

Belated but those missing links to stories Big Finish always do so well and gives an excuse to revisit that era which was one of the best. I hope for the 60th Big Finish have booked in special doctor Companion sets from the modern era. It would be lovely to have chris and Billie record something and get the ubiquitous Karen Gillan and Matt Smith to free up space in their busy schedules in time for 2023. I,m glad they are planning to cover more unseen adventures from Classic and New series.

Honestly I think itd be easier for them to get smith involved than Karen gillan. And capaldi I imagine is a dead certainty eventually. And from the sounds of his most recent statement eccleston isnt completely against it anymore.

Capaldi doesn’t want to do audios, shame really. He said so at a talk at Comic Con.
