For those who follow the erimem books, Jim Mortimore’s chronicles of Mars trilogy is finally seeing the light of day soon. He is publishing the trilogy himself with full permission of thebes publishing. Book one should be sometime in July with two to follow August/September.

BookCollector, Was this Trilogy ever a 3 part Series on TV. It was the Late Seventies or Early Eighties and we were Caravan holidaying on the East Coast. I watched it on an Old Black and White Portable TV over Three Days, but I really Enjoyed it.

This trilogy is new, based on the works of edgar rice Burroughs (the chronicles of mars) the TV series you are thinking of is, I think, the Martian chronicles based on the novel by ray Bradbury starring Rock Hudson.
The Jim mortimore book was originally announced for 2019 I think but has since expanded from one book into a trilogy complete with illustrations meaning thebes have stepped back and allowed Jim to publish them himself via Amazon and lulu although as yet they are not available.
      The blurb.

      MAAHES.

World of Wonder. World of Terror.

A shocking discovery sets one-time Pharaoh and time traveller Erimemushinteperem, her friends Andy and Matt Hansen, and Professor Ibrahim Hadmani on a collision course with the most dangerous world they’ve yet encountered.

      1911

What starts as a commonplace time travel expedition to the Valley of the Kings becomes a phantasmagorical nightmare on the planet Maahes when Erimem, her friends, Egyptologist Howard Carter and ex-cavalryman Edgar Rice Burroughs, are blasted away from Earth by a strangely familiar deadly stranger. But lighting animated zombies, sky battles on flying ships, monsters made of living glass and a war that’s raged for time out of mind are nothing compared to the threat from a million year old adversary.

      The Lost Pharaoh

Separated on a deadly world many times larger than Earth, Erimem and her friends not only have to find each other but help the tribes of Maahes face a terrifying common enemy:
      .
Can Edgar Rice Burroughs and Howard Carter put aside their bitter enmity to help Erimem and her friends stop the war?
Why does The Lost Pharaoh want to destroy every last thing on the planet?
Political intrigue and psychedelic space adventure meet in the latest extravaganza of the two-and-only Pharaoh Erimemushinteperem.

      A Pharaoh of Mars
is the first of a new series of Erimem adventures licensed by Thebes Publishing:

It was the Martian chronicles you are thinking of The Dr. Three episodes that aired in 1980. Starring rock hudson it was a decent adaptation of the novel.

      June 24th, 2025 - 9:16pm

Yes it was the Martian Chronicles. When Bookcollector mentioned Mars and Chronicles, also it was in Three Parts. (Trilogy) I thought it might have been the same Franchise.
Haven’t seen it since 1980 so I couldn’t Fully remember The Title.

So BBC studios allowed the recreation of Mission to the Unknown by UCLan. They premiered it and it’s available via the BBC Doctor Who YouTube channel.
Is it still bbc copyright as it’s a recreation? If so Can it be released on physical media? I know it’s only 25 minutes but could have this, a behind the scenes making of and the audio story as extras. Be a niche audience but could do a limited print on demand thing. Or see how many people interested then if gets enough numbers go ahead

James I’m sure you have asked this or similar before… it can’t be released without permission of BBC. It is still copyrighted as a BBC product. It uses a BBC script and BBC designs. It was made as a non-commercial student project. It might be including on a future animated release but it’s no guarantee and it would only be as an extra. The original version would be the main release (probably as part of masterplan) as a black and white/colour/reconstruction with the remake as an extra. If you want it it is available. I have it as a DVD with a mission animation and reconstruction. But I doubt it would be released officially outside of an extra on a BBC DVD

I know i meant would/could bbc release as a official standalone release not by UCLan.
Gueess just wait for the animation for DMP for it to be added

      June 22nd, 2025 - 9:09am

Mission to the unknown is unlikely to get a stand alone release. Too short for a full priced main feature plus the lack of doctor in the episode will always make it a riskier prospect in the eyes of the higher ups regardless of the daleks.

In my opinion it should be on the myth makers as both stories are lead ins though I do see the logic on including it on a masterplan release.

The uclan version will 100 percent be a bonus feature as it’s not the original cast and audio

    • Prof Horner

      June 22nd, 2025 - 10:07am

So Gordon do you think that Mission to Unknown could animated at the same time as Myth Makers? Released on the same DVD?

    • Gordon

      June 22nd, 2025 - 11:25am

It’s possible. I wouldn’t rule it out but I wouldn’t take it as a confirmation either. It’s more what I think they should do.

    • James

      June 22nd, 2025 - 1:15pm

Considering even though it’s a DMP prequel/prologue, it does come before Myth Makers in the broadcast/episode guide. So doing it alongside Myth Makers would make sense as long as the same team does DMP so visually if you watched it either Mission/DMP or Mission/Myth/DMP it’s easy to watch.
As it’s a short episode I think they could release it on both stories.

Question though as DMP is such a big story (12 x25 mins), how many discs would it be on release? Twice as many as the animated troughtons and 4 times animated hartnell.
With 12 colour, 12 b&w, 3 surviving eps, then all the making of, behind the scenes stuff to add as well as possibly mission animated in b&w, colour and unclan version (guessing 1 disc worth total).

      Possibly 6 discs maybe?

How is The S3 box set going to be packaged when it comes round? I know someone said it wouldn’t be split so would they reduce the content on the discs? Obviously be easy for a standard version as could be split between 2/3 bluray boxes and housed in a cardboard.
There are 10 stories in this season
      3 stories animated (galaxy 4 2d, celestial toymaker 2d, savages 3D)
3 stories surviving in full (ark 1d, gunfighters 1d, war machine 1d)
2 completely missing full stories (myth makers and massacre =both 4 x25 mins)
1 missing short story (mission 25 mins, plus recreation ep)

6 of these stories (animated and surviving) have 10 discs already of content.

      Theorys and opinions?

    • Amypondfan

      June 22nd, 2025 - 1:54pm

Masterplan will possibly be split into two releases. But whether it’s two or one release it will need at least 6-8 discs.
Disc 1 Mission to the unknown (if not on myth makers release)
      Disc 2 episodes 1-6 b+w animation
Disc 3 episodes 1-6 colour animation
      Disc 4 episodes 1-6 recon
      Disc 5 episodes 7-12 b+w animation
Disc 6 episodes 7-12 colour animation
      Disc 7 episodes 7-12 recon
Disc 8 extras (if longer than previous six part releases which held the extras over the three discs)

    • James

      June 22nd, 2025 - 9:03pm

      Amypondfan.
Like your breakdown. Would you think if split 2 releases done at same time or intervals between one and the other? What about surviving eps 2/5/10?

Could be done as 2 boxsets housed in a carboard box outer for the dvd and bluray release. Like they did with BoxSets in the past (Bred for War, Key to Time, Beginning, etc)
Can you house 8 discs in a boxset without overlapping?

Just problem with if they do a steelbook. Yes it look nice with artwork (as they all do) but cost would be as much as a Collection set going by previous steelbooks. Would it be overlapped inaide or is it possible to do 3 doors inside front and back?

Savages was 3 discs and thats £30. DMP roughly 3 times the size looking at atleast £70 minimum.

Think £45 for bluray £30 for dvd. Cant imagine how much s3 will be. When the sets started they were around the £30 mark, currently £50 mark.

    • Amypondfan

      June 22nd, 2025 - 9:21pm

Would not mind it being split into two parts if it means we don’t end up with overlapping discs. If it was in two then a box set would be good or part one one month part two the next would be fine. I have spare boxes that hold six, four and three discs so if they overlapped I’d swap them out even if it meant putting masterplan discs with my mission to the unknown box I’d be happy with that if it meant no overlapping discs. I think the season three bluray may cause complaints as I imagine it will be more expensive than other sets. You could be taking 20+ discs. It might be a season that has to be split into two which again, will cause complaints.
      Galaxy four (2 d)
Mission to the unknown (1 d)
Myth makers (2-3 d depending on extras)
Daleks masterplan (6-8 d depending on extras)
Massacre (2-3 d depending on extras)
      Ark (1 d)
      Celestial toymaker (2 d)
      Gun fighters (1d)
      Savages (3 d)
      War machines (1d)

So potentially 21 discs to 25 discs depending on extras

    • Amypondfan

      June 22nd, 2025 - 9:41pm

I’m assuming by the way all the missing stories get animated before a season set is released. There is of course no guarantee of that.

    • Gordon

      June 23rd, 2025 - 6:40am

Think masterplan will be around the 6 discs mark for the animated version. 2 for black and white 2 for colour and 2 for recons with the extras scattered through. The collection version could be 4 discs due to the compression and how economical they are with space

Think on how much of a gap between a split masterplan it depends on how it’s animated. If it’s by 1 team maybe a year gap. If it’s multiple maybe 3-6 months

When it comes to the stand alone animated releases the likes of savages won’t be 3 discs on the collection sets. The only reason it was 3 discs was to be equal to the dvd contents. With a bit of careful plotting and better compression you could trim things for season 3. Mission to the unknown could house some masterplan extras plus the colour masterplan discs can spread the extras. Recons also doesn’t take up much space so probably would fit on the b and white masterplan animated discs. plus they can move around things like the Innes Lloyd doc to the war machines for example. With the exception of masterplan the animations should not be more than 2 discs each on the collection with the black and w animated discs holding the recons/surviving eps and the colour discs holding the extras

      Disc 1: g4 b/w and recons
      Disc 2: g4 colour/extras
Disc 3: mission to the unknown/recon/extras
Disc 4: the myth makers b and w/recons
Disc 5: the myth makers colour/extras
      Disc 6: masterplan 1-6 b/w and recons
      Disc 7: masterplan 7-12 b/w and recons
Disc 8: masterplan 1-6 colour and extras
Disc 9: masterplan 7-12 colour and extras
Disc 10: the massacre b/w recons
Disc 11: the massacre colour and extras
      Disc 12: the ark
Disc 13: the celestial toymaker b/w recons
Disc 14: the celestial toymaker colour extras
      Disc 15: the gunfighters
Disc 16: the savages b/w recons
Disc 17: the savages colour and extras
      Disc 18: the war machines

    • James

      June 23rd, 2025 - 11:57am

      Gordon
      Great disc breakdown.
18 is a mega boxset so gonna be a hefty price id say around £100 i think for all this.

Also gonna have to be some investment in its design to stop the trays from falling off and the box being able to cope with the weight.

Maybe for this one they could do 2 boxes with similar current design/style but smaller so can be housed within a main box. The main box having the s3 cover art and the 2 smaller boxes having art to cover the story’s of each parts. Part1 galaxy4-DMP
Part 2 massacre – war machines
Thia would also give us an extra artwork from Lee whos done a fantastic job so far.

The vhs release of bbc The LostWorld which was like a book made of atrong carboard and opened the front flap.

Obviously the standard version will have no problems as can be split between standard bluray boxsets housed in the standard carboard box/sleeve.

Thanks for the replies and views btw

    • James

      June 25th, 2025 - 11:41am

Just a thought with the 60s sets would it be better to just have the black and white eps/animations?
Disc 1 Galaxy 4: b&w animation and recons, surving eps
Disc 2 galaxy 4: extras, mission to the unknown: b&w animation, remake, recons and extras
Disc 3 the myth makers: b&w animation, recons, extras
      Disc 4 dmp: b&w animation 1-6, recons, ep 2 and 5
      Disc 5 dmp: b&w animation 7-12, recons, ep 10
Disc 6 massacre: b&w animation, recons, extras
Disc 7 the ark: eps and extras
Disc 8 celestial toymaker: b&w animation, recons, ep 4 and extras
Disc 9 the gunfighters: eps and extras
Disc 10 the savages: b&w animation, recons, extras
Disc 11 the war machine: eps and extras

Just thinking as it would save on discs and prevent box from breaking. Could have trailers for the colour animations like the announcement trailers. As most people may already have them as story releases anyways.

Its quite unfair they’re cheaper there when outside of the UK, AUZ and USA you have to use eBay and there’s also extra fees too. The fact you have to buy all 3 if you only want 1 is quite silly. Oh well, I’ll be passing sadly.

Scificollector are selling three of the unreleased Eaglemoss figurines… for £30 each and using eBay to ship internationally (bar Auz and USA) which costs a lot in fees. Safe to say I’ll be skipping them. Nowhere near the Eaglemoss price point. Also, you have to buy all three or none. Ridiculous.
