Doctor Who Beyond The Doctor Harry Sullivan’s War Audio CD

Available to order from www.amazon.co.uk and www.forbiddenplanet.com

Christopher Naylor reads this original novel featuring the Doctor’s former companion in his own adventure.

It’s ten years since Harry Sullivan left UNIT and gave up his travels in the TARDIS with the Doctor and Sarah Jane.

Since then he has been engaged in top secret work, developing antidotes to nerve toxins. But when he is transferred to Yarra in the Hebrides to work on weapons research, he has severe misgivings. For one thing, it goes against much of what he believes in. For another, someone is out to kill Harry Sullivan.

Who wants Harry safely out of the way? What significance does Van Gogh painting have? And can Harry’s old friend, the Brigadier, really be involved in a scheme which threatens the security of the Western World?

Not like the film at all. The only similarity is they both feature scenes on the Eiffel Tower

They do both feature action scenes on famous bridges.

It’s a cracking story and Ian Marter was a fantastic writer. I love the detail that he’s thrown in there as I could actually follow the action through the real world locations.

So many authors just sketch in a location to fit the story without actually using any detail of the location, but he really nails using Scotland as his location.

Now this has me very interested. Turlough and the Earthlink Dilemma probably aint to far away I guess. Given that we are nearly out of Target novelisations to do audiobooks of I wonder if this is the start of them doing audiobooks of original novels? I would love them to start doing audiobooks of the Virgin books or the Past Doctor and Eighth Doctor Adventures books.

I read the three books again a few years back. K9 was decent, slightly overwritten, but decent. Turlough is still one of the worst books I’ve ever read! But the harry book was a good solid thriller. And that’s the thing about the harry book. It’s not science fiction, it’s not a doctor who book even, it’s just a good bondesque thriller. Might have to read it again this year.
