Coming Soon – The Unofficial Dr Who Annual 1997

People have been asking for an 8th Doctor annual ever since ‘Terraqueous Distributors’ first started the annuals project. And although we’ve wanted to, Big Finish have been doing a wonderful job, giving us years of adventures with the 8th Doctor.
However, back in 1996 once the TV Movie had aired, there was a strip that ran every week in the Radio Times, written by Gary Russell and beautifully illustrated by Lee Sullivan. These were the original continued adventures of the 8th Doctor, and his new companions Stacy and Ice Warrior – Ssard.
Like many other fans, we looked forward to picking up the Radio Times every Tuesday, just for this strip alone. It was so well written. And I remember at the time, being very disappointed when the strip ended.
So now we’re going back to the beginning of the 8th Doctor’s journey – when Doctor Who was brought back to our screens, after a seven year absence.
This is very much a 1997 annual. We’re going back to that amazing year, when everything was new! A new production team, a huge new Tardis interior, and an amazing new Doctor in Paul McGann. And new companions Stacy and Ssard. The 1997 annual will include features, puzzles, strips, and stories.
We have contributions from Gary Russell, Lee Sullivan, along with illustrations from great artists like Alister Pearson, Smuzz (2000ad fame), Paul Cooke and more.
‘The Dr Who unofficial annual 1997’ and ‘The Dr Who unofficial annual 1988’, will be released later this year.

I miss those old Radio Times strips – I will have to dig them out of the loft and catch up with.

All I hear about is when Dr who went off air after season 26 right up until Nu Who started,
Apart from the Mcgann TV movie how barren and desolate Dr Who was. Without no show and hardly any merchandise it was christened the wilderness years.
(That’s all I’ve ever heard really.)

There were no new episodes (except the TV Movie, a failed pilot) and it felt like there never would be again. Matters improved very slightly after Curse of the Fatal Death. Only in hindsight does it look like it was a good time to be a fan. I ain’t going back there! Nooo you can’t make me go back…

the characer shapes are very similar to those on the cover of the 1974 Doctor Who annual, very clever.

May 3rd, 2021 - 11:51amBrilliant news. Was really hoping for a 1997 annual but i wasn’t sure how they would do it considering the copyright issues around the movie characters. A stacy and ssard annual is a great idea. Now i just have to wait for the links so i can order the 1988 and 1997 annuals! Oh, and a reprint of those comic strips is long overdue…

May 4th, 2021 - 8:38pmNo, this won’t contain the RT strips. It’s copyrighted material, and cannot be included sadly. But there will be a nice article about the strips, featuring interviews with the team involved in their development. That might include some of Lee’s sketches 🙂

May 3rd, 2021 - 11:55amThey are only doing annuals that would have been done. A 1990 annual for 1989 would have done and there may well have been a 1991 annual for 1990 considering the time it took to confirm the cancellation.

May 3rd, 2021 - 3:39pmTechnically we have the 1990 Yearbooks, which leaves just Annuals 1990 and 1991 to cover, no? Then 1998 – 2005? I know there’s a non-Terraqueous Annual 1964 in the works too. So just 10 more to go, and we have Annuals/Yearbooks 1964-2021!
