Hopefully Charles Norton is looking at this poll and does ‘The Evil of the Daleks’ next. Certainly, several stories were mentioned to the BBC as to which stories could be animated. ‘Power of the Daleks’ was deemed to be the ideal choice, if not necessarily the easiest choice to animate.

Marco Polo – because it’s the longest, most incomplete serial. One we otherwise don’t have ANY episodes of.

The Daleks’ Master Plan – because it would mean an epic nine episode animation to add to the existing three episodes.

Fury from the Deep – because (counting animations), the biggest continuous gap in the Who library now is the eight episode run from Fury Part 1 to Wheel in Space Part 2 and animating Fury would finally flip the Troughton era from ‘Mainly missing, with bits and pieces surviving’ to ‘Mostly available, with just bits and pieces missing’.

So does anyone think that Phil Morris found more episodes and wont return them ?

No. I doubt very much that Phil Morris has found any more missing Doctor Who. When we look at what has been recovered, ‘The Enemy of the World’ and most of ‘The Web of Fear’. I considered this to be a one off golden find. Plus, it wasn’t too much of a surprise that they were found in Nigeria. As it has been Nigeria in the past that has returned full prints of Doctor Who stories. These were ‘The Time Meddler’ and ‘The War Machines’. Of the four complete stories returned over the last 30 odd years, only ‘The Tomb of the Cybermen’ wasn’t recovered from Nigeria but Hong Kong in 1992. If more will be found, I think Nigeria is the most likely to still have something somewhere. So if there is anything left to be recovered then the most likely would be ‘The Web of Fear’ episode 3. As we are certain someone somewhere has it! The only other stories that possibly could be found in full (although I feel it’s unlikely) would be ‘The Abominable Snowmen’ and ‘The Wheel in Space’. But that’s only on the fact that those two stories were purchased in 1974, about the same time as ‘The Enemy of the World’ and ‘The Web of Fear’. So you would think that as 2 of those 4 have been recovered, there is a possibility the other 2 could exist. But I still think it’s unlikely. It may only be odd episodes that get recovered in future, and not full serials.

Phillip Morris has got more of the paper trail for the other two stories, so even if he doesn’t find them we’ll at least have a better idea of their ultimate fate.

I do hope ‘The Abominable Snowmen’ and ‘The Wheel in Space’ can be recovered, as well as episode 3 of ‘The Web of Fear’. It would seriously improve Season 5, and the Troughton era.

It does seem clear as well that Phillip Morris is aware of private film collectors with potential missing episodes/material. Whilst I respect Mr Morris thanking collectors for saving and keeping such material. I do worry about how well this material is being looked after, because the old nature of the films will deteriorate over time, and could well develop vinegar syndrome. Which will ultimately make these films useless to the BBC, and worthless to the collector. I hope some of these people see sense, and understand that for long term survival they need to be properly restored and saved.

I chose the three I have chosen ‘cos as well as liking Vicki, I like Victoria too. I also wanted to see how the Doc sells the idea of the Trojan horse. Above all I want to see Victoria’s debut and departure. Wish I could have chosen more than three, but in a way I wish I didn’t, if ya know what I mean

If the plan (long term) was to animate all the missing episodes, and I for one would support and welcome that. I would also hope for a BBC Store release and a further DVD release a few weeks later. But if such an idea was to happen, I would suggest the very last stories to be animated should be ‘Galaxy 4’ and ‘The Underwater Menace’. Plus I would suggest releasing them both together in a DVD boxset.

I wonder if anyone at BBC worldwide or 2|entertain is looking at this poll…? Although if they aren’t I’d be happy with any of these stories re-animated anyway. Or better still, found in someone’s collection or an old BBC station… I think we’re due another recovery by 2020 😉 There’s never been more than 7 years without one.

2|entertain doesn’t exist any more. Even if they did, they’ve exhausted their viable options.

A lot of the funding here was provided by BBC America which removes that concern.

I think they mean Fury From The Deep. And who can blame them – that would be a brilliant choice. Evil of the Daleks for me – and most others it seems.

‘The Underwater Menace’ is already out. But it’s out on DVD with a poor slideshow of telesnaps for parts 1 and 4. I hope to see it eventually re-released with animation for parts 1 and 4.
