Doctor Who Chronicles 1972

PRESS RELEASE

DOCTOR WHO: CHRONICLES 1972

Panini’s latest, 116-page bookazine examines the world of Jon Pertwee’s Doctor Who during 1972.

Season 9 offered viewers some much-needed glamour and excitement amid the economic gloom of the early 1970s. In episodes that played like a colourful comic strip brought to life on the screen, the debonair Doctor and his plucky sidekick Jo Grant saved Earth from Daleks and the Master, as well as venturing to alien worlds steeped in mystery and intrigue.

“We’ve explored some of the most unusual corners of 1972 in this issue,” says editor Marcus Hearn. “What was it like to be at the Science Museum exhibition? Why does The Sea Devils sound like that? And what exactly was a ‘Mark 7’ Dalek? These are among the questions we’ve asked on these pages. Some of the answers are quite surprising.”

Highlights of the new bookazine include:

  • Katy Manning and other visitors to the BBC’s Special Effects Exhibition recall the groundbreaking event.
  • An interview with Keith Miller, who was still at school when he became Secretary of the official Doctor Who Fan Club in 1972.
  • The inside story of the ‘Mark 7’ Dalek toys offered as prizes in a Radio Times competition.
  • The Radiophonic Workshop’s Mark Ayres pays tribute to Malcolm Clarke, the maverick composer who created the avant-garde score for The Sea Devils.
  • How Jon Pertwee made a bid for pop stardom – with a bit of help from Deep Purple.
  • The unmade Brian Hayles stories that led to his Doctor Who comeback with The Curse of Peladon.
  • The life and career of Third Doctor comic-strip artist Gerry Haylock.
  • Director Christopher Barry’s notes on the casting and shooting of The Mutants.
  • How Doctor Who tried – and failed – to break America in 1972.

PLUS

  • Guides to every story in Season 9, the Doctor Who Annual, comic strips and much more!

Doctor Who: Chronicles 1972 is on sale Thursday 5 November, price £12.99 from panini.co.uk and selected news retailers while stocks last. Also available digitally from pocketmags.com price £11.99.

The photo of TV Action takes me back, taken too soon. Let’s hope TG Jones has a copy straight away.
