I haven’t been on this website for about a year, I’m now getting back into this:

Can anyone please tell me which Limited Edition sets have issues and which discs in particular have issues that have since been fixed for the Standard Versions?

I don’t just mean replacement discs. I mean anything that’s been fixed. Thanks very much

The only seasons that have had replacements are 12, 18 and 20. The US also had 19 but I can’t remember off hand. The issues were:

Season 12: Audio issues with sontaran experiment. Missing effects and spelling mistake on revenge of the cybermen (both got discs issued but 1 effect still missed

Season 18 had audio issues with leisure hive and a spelling mistake in meglos of one of the writers. The audio issue did get a reissued disc. The spelling mistake despite being fixed for the standard edition didn’t get a reissued disc

The continuities in castrovalva were out of sync but were corrected and included in season 18’s bonus disc

Numerous discs from season 20 had juttering in the main features that only effected certain players and also . They were fixed for the standard editions. Replacements were issued in the form of a copy of the standard edition

Technically not an error as it was an artistic choice but the last couple of releases (13 and 21 mainly) have had ai applied to them and the look of the main features are bellow the standards accepted by the previous releases. I’m sure if I’ve forgotten anything I’m sure others will chime in

      Thank you

Did that 1 effect that missed in Season 12 get fixed for the standard edition?

I thought I remembered Season 19 having more issues than that.

Was it only Season 20 with juddery issue?

Is it looking like Seasons 13 and 21 may get de-Ai for the Standards? Have there been any hints?

    • Gordon

      August 5th, 2026 - 10:46pm

The missing effect wasn’t replaced for the standard edition of season 12.

Now you come to mention it there was some issue with some of the film sequences in season 19 but it was that long ago I couldn’t quite remember what exactly it is. It wasn’t fixed though.

It was only season 20 that had the issue so I assume it was fixed.

Rumours are floating that the next release (wildly believed to be 16) is going to be delayed till March to fix the ai issues which does suggest the 13 and 21 will also get looked at but nothing confirmed as yet

Oh one other thing I forgot. Revelation of the daleks part 2 has a missing shot in the reprise but was not replaced for the standard edition

I asked Mark Ayres in May and he said be patient about the animations.

    • Gordon

      August 4th, 2026 - 1:05pm

There is definetly more coming in terms of animations. Found a mention that Toby has Hadoke said in a recent podcast (recorded back at new year) that he has given animators heights of actors for them to work with. David Busch (animator) has also said he’s contributed to an upcoming release but no names mentioned. I’m confident (though i must stress I know nothing about when things are coming)we will get something sooner than later. If we ain’t getting a collection release before Christmas an animation would be the perfect alternative to fill the void.

      August 4th, 2026 - 3:00pm

I think the Smugglers is definitely a release as the effort to get Anneke to the beach, asking locals if they remember filming. It’s just what or when? But that I mean animation, missing episodes or a mix of both?

    • Prof Horner

      August 4th, 2026 - 3:30pm

My top three would be The Smugglers, The Wheel in Space and The Space Pirates.
But I hope that the next collection isn’t push back to next March . That would mean a Troughton season would be pushed back into 2028 , which would not be good.

Years ago when Dan Hall was in charge of the range I got told and shown all sorts information. It was all because I told him at Riverside some positive feedback about the range, he took me aside and opened his Mac book and played a file. The footage was of Hartnell making his away across the snow to the TARDIS at the end of TP4, I was blown away and that footage never made to the release. I also remember he commissioned the Underwater Menace animation by the same team, but it wasn’t to be. I made some good friends at those Riverside events by DWAS.

As has been pointed out before robw don’t read to much into the making of a documentary. Just because a documentary has been made or is planned doesn’t mean episodes have been returned or that an animation is imminent. The myth makers documentary was filmed in 2024 (if I remember Gordon’s info correctly) so a documentary doesn’t necessarily lead to an imminent release. We will get announcements we just have to be patient. And a word of caution, don’t expect returned episodes. The chances are slim we will get anymore soon. If we do then great but don’t assume more are definitely coming.

    • Babelbro

      August 5th, 2026 - 12:50pm

@RobW woah woah woah – are you saying there is further existing footage from the Tenth Planet part 4?

Haven’t watched Tenth Planet in a while but I’m sure there’s no audio of the Doctor wading through the snow back to the Tardis – he leaves the base first without Ben and Polly, and the two later arrive at the Tardis banging on the doors to the Doctor to let them in. So I didn’t think there was any recorded sequence of the Doctor between the base to the Tardis interior Regeneration scene?

    • Babelbro

      August 5th, 2026 - 12:54pm

+ you should’ve filmed his macbook screen with your phone. Not only would it have left zero trace of where it had come from, but it would’ve also given it that classic season 7 screen recorded look to it missed opportunity there

      That’s from the animation

    • RobW

      August 5th, 2026 - 1:40pm

I’m talking about animated footage, not missing footage of Tenth Planet 4.

    • Gordon

      August 5th, 2026 - 1:49pm

If memory serves there was test animation footage in the old planet 55 website and the discription does kind of fit that.

If they want to keep a recovery a secret till reveal time the last thing they would do is film on location bonus material. The turn around time from gotten their hands on it to anouncing it was about 2-3 weeks I believe.

Think it’s 1 of 4 releases (bear in mind the new deal was to work on multiple titles at once and I’ve been told multiple animations are being worked on). Myth makers, smugglers, wheel in space or space pirates as they are all roughly the same set of difficulty. I was told and my gut says space pirates but could easily be any of the other 3 due to multiple things being worked on plus extras being filmed for myth makers and smugglers they could just as easily be next

Wasn’t really expecting an anouncment today considering how busy it’s been for other things. A ncuti figure, a circuit breaker comic book, the 2 terrance dicks books and the lost in time circuit breaker game thing. If we were getting anything anounced from bbc studios I’d say the most likely thing is Blake’s 7 season 3 cover extras and release date. It’s pretty much done and ready to go by all accounts and it should be imminent if it’s coming out early November again

So it Cb is slowing upThe Collection.
Sooner see the end of these multi media projects and get on with the collection or animations whilst the core audience for them are still alive.

Otherwise sales will drop off to much.

    • Babelbro

      August 7th, 2026 - 8:10pm

Maybe it’s just my own perspective of things; I don’t follow Circuit Breaker or any of these multi-media projects but I do get the marketing videos on my social media feed and the comments are constantly negative about them all on the whole.

Surely these projects must be making enough money to keep being made, because otherwise the impression I’ve had for years is that nobody can actually stand them.

Wheras with the Collection sets, sure there’s been backlash against the Ai use but otherwise it’s still a big moneymaker and projects like Circuit breaker are just packed full of comments asking for when the next Collection’s being announced.

Unless there’s something else to explain why these projects are being made and remade, because if there is then I’ll gladly stand corrected, but surely it’s a no brainer to instead concentrate on the Collection range + Complete New Who Doctor Blu-ray boxsets to keep the mass interest going while the show remains off air?

    • Gordon

      August 7th, 2026 - 10:29pm

As I’ve said elsewhere there is a gap next week so there might be something if there is anything ready to anounce.

I do think there is fans and buyers of circuit breaker and the other releases. They simply wouldn’t be getting made otherwise.

Not having circuit breaker and other releases would not mean you’d get other blu ray releases instead as all the work is for books, audio, comic books and video game artists. The blu ray team has pretty much zero work to do with the releases (outside of submitting the episodes for the compilation required) and they would need extra time to work on those hypothetical extra releases on top of the current releases that are currently working on. Plus this has been in the works for at least a year (it was announced July 25th 2025) plus so was not meant to fill in a gap in the tv schedule while there is no new eps.

Also to note, these top of chart sellers, still widely available on amazon.. Sales haven’t tanked.. they’ve fallen..by the way, some of the team doing these, were very unhappy on quality…

The collection stopped selling out instantly with the introduction of the standard editions in 2021(season 24 onwards). Many buying to see the new content then selling them to get the standards. It hasn’t been selling out instantly for the last 5 years. How does me mentioning the sets are still chart topping (ie a fact) anyway mean that I’m happy with them? My critisms of the last 2 sets have been well mentioned if you want to scroll down past pages and seek them out.

    • Tony Cotterill

      July 15th, 2026 - 8:24pm

That’s why , they are not selling out then!

    • Amypondfan

      July 15th, 2026 - 9:48pm

Yes they are not selling out but it has nothing to do with ai. As Gordon says its been like that since 2021, long before ai was used excessively. And Gordon has stated his concerns with the last few releases. People can decide for themselves whether they want something or not. Doesn’t make them wrong. Some people are happy with them. Some people aren’t. If you aren’t happy then don’t buy the next set if it uses ai.

    • Professor Flibble

      July 15th, 2026 - 10:35pm

Even though like everyone else I have issues with the use of AI in the remastering, I still buy the box sets and I’m still excited every time they’re announced because there’s a lot more going on than just the restoration. The packaging, updated effects, tons of new special features etc.

    • Tony Cotterill

    • Amypondfan

      July 15th, 2026 - 11:54pm

How can it be delayed when we never actually had a release date for it?

    • Babelbro

      July 16th, 2026 - 1:00am

@Tony Appreciate the kind words thanks.

I agree the recent limited editions indeed are still selling well, because evidently, barring any human errors such as spelling mistakes etc. the sets are top notch quality.

The online reviews however are just embarrassing. You’ve only got to go straight to the Amazon page for Season 21 and you get a nice big screenshot of Tegan encountering what looks like a PS1 character pissed out his brains from Wetherspoons… because that’s ‘restoration’ isn’t it, and so many paying customers are just leaving review after review, rightfully complaining about that specific element, even though the rest of the work prior to the Ai, including the beautiful sound work by Mark Ayers, is completely sidelined thanks to this poorly handled Ai slop.

The very best I’ve seen of Ai attempting to ‘reimagine’ standard definition tape is of New Who Series 1 by YouTuber ‘RemasteredGems’. If you visit his page + website he directly compares his methods + Ai software handling compared to the exact software used by the BBC/Restoration Team, exposing just how laughably bad the latter is when it comes to actor’s faces distorting, growing extra teeth, text turning into garbled mush, skin turning plastic, crossed eyes, the list goes on.

What I genuinely cannot fathom is why it is only paying customers, and people like myself that have self taught experience in video/photo editing but nowhere near the experience of professional/career as opposed to the Restoration Team, and I can see it crystal clear as day that this Ai filter is so jarringly bad. Peter Davison’s face flickers and becomes an entirely different face as he first sets foot outside the Tardis in ‘Resurrection of the Daleks’, and Colin Baker’s eyes + pupils roll around like something out of Looney Toons in ‘The Twin Dilemma’ as he’s replying “yuck” to Peri’s outfit change – because you know, originally Colin Baker was actually looking *at* Nicola Bryant when he delivered the line – but this new ‘restoration’ informs us this is no longer the case.

I’m not sure what else can be said on this but nevertheless it is such a shame to think the work this range was producing almost a decade ago was *perfectly fine*. Without any explanation from the Restoration Team.

In an ideal world, even if it meant an extended delay to allow a rethink – I personally would be happy to wait longer if it meant the Team finally recognized that everything else within the editing structure / process since 2017 is perfectly fine, visually + audibly, and on behalf of the fans, and finally dropped Topaz Ai altogether.

If they want to use it, then there’s only one single option available – hire ‘RemasteredGems’ – if not, just drop it right now, it just looks so ridiculous and amateur.

    • R.c

      July 16th, 2026 - 2:18am

How can something be delayed without a release date being revealed?

“People like myself” and pretty much demanding an explanation: wow no ego showing there (sarcasm) . Has there been any explanation or apology given to any of the terrible Cameron restoration or jaws 2/3/revenge restoration teams ? Other than Cameron’s get out of your moms basements comment then nothing.

    • Babelbro

      July 16th, 2026 - 3:16am

Because the Collection range is constantly working further ahead, i.e the one set after the next; hence when the Ai complaints first properly blew up social media with Season 13 (i.e the public Richard Bignell meltdown), many wise people closely following the release process such as Matthew Purchase, and Gordon here on this site, were as good as certain in believing nothing could be done with Season 21 as it would’ve already have been signed off way too far down the line with said Ai slop.

“People like myself” I’m referring to myself in terms of being a non-professional video editor, but also the great many Doctor Who fans and general paying customers of this Collection range that also won’t necessarily have a professional background in media production that can and have expressed crystal clear the dire state of this Ai slop ruining these boxsets, because it simply is clear as day, yet the team behind the ‘restoration’ process evidently are utterly oblivious to the fact.

If stating the obvious in my paragraph above is somehow meaning that I have an ego(?) then sure. Not once have I or anyone else here ‘demanded an explanation’, I’ve simply said there likely will never be one while the Collection range remains incomplete / until the production contracts cease. You’ve made the fair point in that there were idiots using the excuse of said Ai slop backlash to personally target and abuse members of the team on GallifreyBase, and I’m certain no one here is condoning it, but nevertheless GallifreyBase is a very tiny inner circle of chosen people with a good as useless registration process, so unless someone such as Matthew Purchase, a GallifreyBase member, were to batch drop that specific forum you mentioned dedicated to the Ai slop discussion, and likely would get himself banned from GallifreyBase for doing so, then the rest of us from the outside have no way of knowing or understanding exactly what is going on under the hood technologically, and no way to constructively put our voices across to the people blindly applying said Ai slop to these boxsets.

Idk if you’re condoning James Cameron, but I personally do not. Similarly to Richard Bignell, James Cameron also had a public meltdown when confronted with the irony that a movie he created in 1984 warning of the imminent threats of Ai to mankind due to mankind abusing said Ai, then went on to run a dodgy dnr 1080p scan of his film through said Ai, causing almost the exact same Ai slop to the Doctor Who Collection sets (garbled text, uncanny valley faces, Linda Hamilton’s nose septum vanishing) – instead of taking the point by the interviewer on the chin and giving a sensible grown up reasoning to his creative decisions with Ai (as George Lucas has recently just done so) he instead decided it was best to chuck all his toys out his pram over it and his first thought process was to resort to school yard jokes about ‘guys in mom’s basements’. I can’t imagine why he would do that except that he legitimately didn’t have any logical answer to his decision making on the 4k release of the Terminator. YouTube is piled up with well paid product review channels praising it while completely avoiding the 4k slop (aside from ‘DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader’).

People want to talk about this stuff because they care about the end product, and they care about it because they want to give money to own it. Effectively it’s like Cadbury’s cheaping out and removing the actual chocolate from their products. We all have fond memories of when it was genuine chocolate, many of us have likely spent silly money on Cadbury’s when you total up all the years together, and if Cadbury’s were to fully restore their products back to 100% plenty of us would go straight back to buying them again.

That’s my take anyway. No ego intended.

    • Gordon

      July 16th, 2026 - 5:04am

I’ve not heard anything but looking in at roobarbs it’s supposedly someone who was at an event that mat Irvine was apart of. Someone “close to things” told them of the supposed date move and “no AI”. It may explain why Lee said he was going to do a tease and has not yet posted it yet. I’m a bit skeptical of it as they don’t have set dates rather tentative until everything is finalised. It could be true but I’d be surprised if it would take that length of time to fix. Restoration isn’t my strong suit but I would have thought the Ai was added at the end of the restoration process so wouldn’t take that long especially if files were kept at the pre ai point, I suppose it’s possible they are also redediting the bonus features as they do tend to use the new restorations when showing footage. It could probably help the animations to give them more time. I do hope we get something to fill the gap even if it’s an animation rather than collection set. If it means no more ai id welcome it. I’ve still not been able to put myself through rewatching s21 again for the commentaries and production subs like I normally do when I get these sets

@COMICshopsDontStand – it really does not, it still looks just as poor in quality.

There’s all kinds of existing algorithms and ‘ai’ that can reduce picture noise / grain, detect film damage, stabilize scanned reels, correct flashing lamp exposures – the latest Peter Cushing Dalek film restoration I believe used most of these tools – the picture cleanup software being able to just find scratches, hair and damage on the hours and hours of scanned reels is 110% a technological breakthrough, including software that can automatically borrow detail from surrounding film frames to paint over said film damaged frames. It is unreal.

      The real tragedy of the recent Collection sets is the use of Topaz Video ai by Peter Crocker (allegedly on factory default settings, and that Crocker cannot tell with his own eyesight as to how far Topaz is going until someone else informs him of it);

Topaz has been proven time and time again to still be in very early experimental stages – sure it’s great for a quick and dirty frame interpolation, de interlacing, upscale – but in no way shape or form is it suitable for a commercial archiving set like Classic Doctor Who. To place all of your bets on that piece of software after 30 years of restoring Doctor Who with such outstanding quality – either the BBC is getting worse and worse with handling deadlines and pressuring people like Crocker to rush his work out, or otherwise Crocker himself genuinely is there looking at his computer monitor and going “yup, that sign in The Caves of Androzani that was clearly readable and pointed to a zone on the map is muuuucccchhhh better as a piece of mush – now that’s restoration in 2026 woah!”

Many users on Twitter have also reported that GallifreyBase, where most of these senior members involved with the range are registered on the forums to, have since been clamping down hard on any discussions on the use of Ai + Topaz video Ai on these boxsets – so the one direct internet forum that could communicate directly to these people working on these sets has effectively silenced any fair and constructive criticism.

As I say, I’d love to know what their logic has been behind all of this, but on their terms they simply do not want to reveal the true reasons why, and none of them are interested in hearing what the paying Doctor Who fans have to say towards the ‘restoration’ process.

Not true. There is a dedicated thread for discussing it: The Dr Who Collection General AI upscaling discussion haven

@ R.c – Matthew Purchase created a post in reference to his blog end of March – early April, but prior to March 18 the GallifreyBase admins did a clean sweep taking down tons upon tons of posts discussing it on the site.

I don’t understand why they would feel the need to do that except to hide from fair scrutiny from paying consumers.

That’s not quite the story. A lot of the posts were moved rather than deleted to the thread I previously mentioned. The first post is 17 March 2026 so many of them got diverted there and is still there. Also some of the posts contained personal attacks and arguing towards members of the blu ray team and other forum members and also off topic discussion which all goes heavily against forum rules.

@ R.c I’m sure it is unfortunately inevitable for many anonymous people on the internet to use the situation to send abuse to officials, and that’s not on, absolutely not.

Likewise, Richard Bignell was bang out of order to publicly tell Matthew Purchase on Twitter that he was talking a lot of rubbish re. Ai on the sets. I appreciate that Tharries held Bignell to account via his YouTube channel. To be that high up in the official Doctor Who circle and talk down to people like that is, inevitably going to incite the kind of abuses you described over at GallifreyBase.

As long as there is today an available direct public forum within the radius of the Blu-ray team’s vision as it were, as it rightly should be, then hopefully they are at least choosing to listen to constructive feedback. There is just no way that you can ignore your own returning consumers this far down near the very end of the range and simply double down on this, at best experimental generative Ai software for what is an boutique archival box set collection, let alone lashing out publicly at said consumers to tell them they’re ‘talking rubbish’.

At the bare minimum, if the next Boxset were to remain under the same Topaz Ai preset, but an explanation were provided by the Blu-ray team to their reasoning and the use of said software moving forward, then that would be a positive start.

I can understand why someone people like the AI work on the sets, as it does look clearer, but this is at the cost of the originally footage being changed. Remember what never exist cannot be recreated, these were not filmed in high def. It would have been best to leave the sets as they are, rather than recreate different footage.

Shame, but it’s been done now.

Hey babelbro we know you love yourself but using chatgpt to write reams of slop is a bit boring. You’ve made your point now stfu.

“Rich”: I thought you were being a tool at first, but then I realised that you were parodying Richard Bignell – naughty, but very funny.

@babel studio canal say they did it manually on Cushings films. (i. E. Not ai at all)

Or thats what it says on screen before the films start.

And on every broadcast film4 and legend do in the uk.

@DeliveryRus – I was referring to the software detection itself being able to quickly identify the film dirt and damage, helping the human eye verify it and then make the decision to clean etc. I watched the team’s own YouTube video demonstrating the software – back then it was mind blowingly impressive, and now the likes of the Star Wars 4k77 project have their own access to similar software. It’s all human / manual / hand cleaned decision making, but the software itself simply helps to highlight and detect the damage to make the workflow far more efficient.

@Rich Bignell is that you lad? Would you rather I didn’t explain things in grown up words and just said bruh bruh 67 67? That easier for ya bruh? ❤️

I hope that they put Colin Baker on the disc for Twin Dilemma. It would be a little weird to have Davison on that one as well

If it’s the same disc layout it will be Colin in Peter’s costume in the menu

DeliveryRus the US discs generally just use the cover art on all the discs, not the individualized designs used in the UK Collectors sets

I saw this listed on Amazon.com just yesterday. It made me wonder something that maybe someone here can answer. Who distributes the Classic series Blu-Rays in North America? It used to be Warner Brothers, but I think they don’t release them in Region A anymore.

    Thanks!

If they usually do three of these a year, are we expecting the non black and white years to be completed by Christmas, with seasons 16 and 11? Or has the 1996 movie taken up one of the slots.

They haven’t really done 3 a year in quite a few years now. Think it was more of an aim that didn’t really feel manageable long term. 16 in the autumn. 11 in the spring if things pan out right

@gordon – you would think since the Ai bot is been used instead of doing all the work themselves they could do 3 again.

      March 27th, 2026 - 6:21am

It wasn’t an ai bot but if you mean the ai usage it’s probably still going to be there
