Doctor Who B&M 2022 Robot Set
Character Options is excited to announce its first new Doctor Who line for 2022, scheduled to land in B&M stores in mid January 2022.
A single remarkable new set will mark a year in which nine new lines have been delivered to B&M. Titled ROBOT, fans can look forward to a classic era figure set based on the debut 1974 episode featuring the ‘new’ Fourth Doctor, played by Tom Baker. The set comprises two figures: The Fourth Doctor in his original shabby red jacket, long stripy scarf and fedora and the K1 Robot. Created in 5.5” collector scale, each has multiple points of articulation and comes packaged in the familiar ‘heritage’ style Doctor Who collector packs with specially created insert artwork.
The back story and inspiration for the set:
In the episode, someone or something has broken into a secret research facility and stolen plans for an advanced disintegrator gun. The Brigadier immediately involves the newly regenerated Fourth Doctor, and it’s decided that they should protect the different facilities where parts for the gun are manufactured. It is all to no avail, as soon, all the components for the weapon have been stolen and not just by a common thief!… As The Doctor himself notes: “…According to my estimation of the resistance to pressure of vegetable fibre, it was stepped on by something that weighed a ¼ of a ton!’
The culprit is in fact a huge robot, which is well over seven feet tall, named after its creator and called The Kettlewell K1 Experimental Robot. Sarah is the first to discover the Robot’s existence and she feels great pity for it when it is asked to go directly against its programming and seems to be in pain. It soon turns out that there is a huge conspiracy and, at the centre, there is a group of scientific reformers who are thinking the unthinkable, and intend to hold the world to ransom with the disintegrator gun or, if their demands are not met, destroy everything and “start again!”.
The scientists, including Sarah as hostage plus the Robot, retreat to an underground bunker to realise their plan. U.N.I.T. attack the bunker and, in the confusion, the already conflicted Robot accidently kills its creator Kettlewell.
The death of its creator drives it insane and, as U.N.I.T. forces move in, the Robot attacks. This prompts the Brigadier to fire the disintegrator at the Robot which grows to an enormous size. The enormous Robot now seeks to protect Sarah and grabs her. The situation ends with The Doctor remembering having created a metal virus which is thrown onto the robot, destroying it.
Al Dewar, Creative Director of Character Options says of the set: “This one is very personal to me. This is one of my formative Doctor Who memories of the then brand new Fourth Doctor and the Robot. I absolutely love this story with Tom Baker in his original and, I still feel, most iconic outfit, and the Robot, which is a lovely piece of design and looks terrific onscreen.
“The figures may have been realised before, but the eagle-eyed will notice one or two subtle and some not-so-subtle changes. On the Robot figure I was keen to get the details right and add one or two little ‘tweaks’, so we now have a ‘slim’ version of the claw hand along with a complete deco makeover. The aim was first to get a more ‘shiny’ correct silver on the body and then adjust the original red colour on the body and clear lenses of the face to a more authentic purple tint.
On the Fourth Doctor figure we have managed to closer match the hue of the red of the jacket, which many thought was too dark on the first release, plus his head and hat have been reworked.
Whether new to the brand or an established collector, there is something new for everyone in this set. It is my belief that your action figure collection will never be complete without a K1 Robot and Doctor set! There, I’ve said it!!“
Fans will be able to collect this brand-new set in-store from Mid January 2022.

December 22nd, 2021 - 11:39amCharacter aren’t doing themselves any favours at the moment. The line seriously needs reviewing as although economical, B&M aren’t the right stockists for these.
Most stores still haven’t had a whiff of any of the latest wave and with no one blind alternative other than ridiculous prices on eBay, people are giving up, leaving the few stores that have the products over stocked.
Surely character can sell them as a B&m in store exclusive but have them available on their own website?
booboo
December 22nd, 2021 - 1:21pmB&M commission these as exclusives so why would they want character selling them taking away the very reason they get manufactured in the 1st place
Nicholas Saunders
December 22nd, 2021 - 2:25pmI totally understand the economics behind this range, but I think a combination of scalpers, B&M’s erratic stock pattern and, perhaps more importantly, the fact these figures are really just variations of previously released figures is eroding most collector’s passion for these. It takes too much time and money to collect these figures and my enthusiasm has waned. Instead of being excited, it’s almost becoming a chore – a ‘oh no, more tracking round empty shelves and rude staff just to get figures to put in storage’ type of feeling. Character need to create some all new characters or if that’s too costly make the variations much more significant or I think their days are numbered with Dr Who. RTD will be keen to ramp up the merchandise for his new era and I wouldn’t be surprised if he insists they ramp up their game or he’ll find another toy company. I get that new toys equal money and Character need to know there’s a market but look at what they’ve given us from Jodie’s era and I think we can all agree it’s pretty meh. I have kids who love the show and none of the new toys have excited them – I mean I get we need companions, but do kids really want a Bradley Walsh over a Tim Shaw or new Master or a CyberLord or … the list goes in. Heck, even if the Timeless Child arc isn’t too everyone’s taste, think of all the toys it could have generated – Jodie in Matrix prison rings, Tecteun, little girl Doctor and massive space portal, etc, etc. I mean where’s the online Fugitive Doctor exclusive? That would have sold in big quantity. Chibnall’s new RTD in lots of ways and one is he took his eye of the toys. Discuss.
booboo
December 22nd, 2021 - 2:40pmCharacter will make anything retailers will buy in sufficient quantity but retailers have not wanted to buy for years now and that’s how it works
They are a business and no business will poor £10,000s into something on the “hope” that it sells. B&M sets are pre-sold so no risk.
MJS
December 22nd, 2021 - 2:53pmScalpers only exist because they get the trade. If people chill out and wait, there’ll be loads to go around. There’s still tonnes of Marinus and Sensorite sets about and there were loads of the big finish sets after a while.
It’s the initial demand that’s driving the scalpers.
Gareth Pugh
December 22nd, 2021 - 3:40pmAlso, I’m fairly sure that the head writer and show runner doesn’t get to ‘look for another toy company’, or is expected to take responsibility for having their eye (or not) on the merchandise policy. I *do* recall RTD and Steven Moffatt mentioning in interviews that stuff would cross their desk for a quick nod-through of approval – but that was at the end of the process, not at the start of deciding who got licenses and for making what. It also didn’t sound like they were the only signatory on approvals or even that they had a power of veto / final say amongst other parties like marketing people from what was BBC Worldwide (now folded into the programme-making arm, to be BBC Studios) whose remit usually *is* to be the ones to award licences to toy and other companies. As Booboo says, in these things, the boot of power is usually on the retailer’s foot.
Martino
December 22nd, 2021 - 5:00pmAt the moment, it’s more of a choice between B&M commissioning Doctor Who figures and not having any figures at all. As for ‘reviewing the line’, these aren’t simple re-releases. Voord, UNIT soldiers, classic TARDIS releases, new variants of classic Doctors, NEW classic companions etc. The line hasn’t looked so healthy in years. As for availability or prices, these are collectables, not essentials. Whatever you collect, from stamps to cars, there are always chase items. Heck, I have incomplete collections I’ve been building for 30 years. First world problems.
Coleman
December 22nd, 2021 - 5:10pmVery well said Martino. I didn’t agree with alot of what Nicholas or Birdy 98 said either.
Especially Nicholas saying (erroding “Most” collectors passion for these). Reading these comments on CO sets, if anything “most” collectors are happy with these new sets over the last few years.
Coleman
December 22nd, 2021 - 5:49pmI don’t think some people realise how lucky they are living in the First World.
Go and live in a Third world country for a few years and your opinions might change.
Uncle Davros
December 22nd, 2021 - 8:25pmI think people’s frustration lies with the extremely limited availability of the sets the scalpers always make a beeline for… the TARDIS and Dalek sets and the fact B&M staff are happy to sell masses of stock to a single purchaser. Usually, the 3 pack sets do tend to get restocked at most stores, but it’s the TARDIS and Daleks sets that fly off the shelves and end up highly priced on ebay and then rarely get restocked at B&M stores.
Surely the recent ‘Jungles of Mechanus Daleks’ and ‘2nd Doctor Abominable Snowmen’ online exclusives prove that CO can do such online exclusives and they absolutely WILL sell out. So perhaps the way to go for CO is keep doing the three packs for B&M, but make the Dalek and TARDIS sets online exclusives instead?
That way, these more in-demand sets would be more fairly distrubuted and scalpers could not get more than 2 copies per person from CO’s website, so far more people stand a chance of getting these hotly anticipated items, particularly if they are available for pre-order like the last two online exclusives were.
I don’t know if it’s feasible for CO to look at this as a way to operate the figure releases in the future? Perhaps CO’s hands are tied and the deal with B&M means they have to release a set number of items per year to B&M stores.
It’s just a real shame that B&M, after now dealing with these Doctor Who releases since 2014/15, are still happy to sell entire batches of stock to scalpers. I’ve spoken to some staff at my local store who say they feel bad watching scalpers buy CO releases in bulk, but there’s nothing they can do about it.
TimelordTim
December 23rd, 2021 - 8:46amThe problem with making all Dalek and TARDIS sets online is the fact that will leave just the 3-packs in B&M.
As we know, stocks of these take longer to sell and usually end up reduced. If this is the only line B&M had they wouldn’t bother, which means, not only no 3-packs, but also not enough income for CO to produce Daleks and TARDIS sets, even online.
Honestly, the system works as it is for the companies, if it would work any other way then they’d already be doing it another way.
I think fans and collectors need a bit more patience and perspective sometimes. I get the frustrations, but honestly, even when resorting to eBay no set would cost more than £30 if given time for prices to reduce and plateau. I know there are people, myself included, that have never paid above RRP for any of the B&M sets despite using eBay, sometimes it can take a few months of patience, but it’s better to wait and be happy with the purchase than forever look at a set and think “I can’t believe this cost me £50!”
People are also very quick to put all their frustrations on scalpers. Whilst scalpers are certainly culprits in some places, in many other situations it is genuinely an area with a number of collectors, or people buying multiple for legitimate army building and customising that cause the stock sell-out for which there can be no fair complaint.
Where scalpers are known, despite some floor staff maybe feeling uneasy about it, overall the company don’t care so long as they sell, and nothing will be done about it whilst a bargain store like B&M are the stockists. To prevent that, we would need shops like Forbidden Planet to be the stockists, and they haven’t been interested in these figures for years – which says all we need to know about the true state of the line in terms of popularity.
It’s easy for Doctor Who fans to assume things are popular and need more releases, but in actual fact, the range isn’t popular enough for more, otherwise of course there would be more as CO would be making more money from them. The wider interest in these figures has minimal existence now and as collectors we just need to be grateful for the fact we still get anything – a point that seems lost on some people these days.
Finally, don’t expect a miraculous increase as soon as RTD is back, it’ll take at least a year, probably a bit longer for any boosted TV ratings to merit an increase in figure production. We have the current system and rate of releases for the next couple of years at least, so we need to just accept that and be happy for what we do get sometimes rather than focusing on the negative aspects all the time.
John
December 23rd, 2021 - 9:09amIts amazing how many people still don’t understand, or choose to ignore, the situation with CO and B&M. CO have no need to make their own range and sell it as they are selling plenty to B&M. They can only sell these items to B&M in the UK. (the items currently on their site were unsold uSA stock) They sell to overseas distributors who want to buy it. It is presumably too much hassle to sell overseas to individuals post Brexit. maybe they can only sell overseas trade I’m not sure. CO suggest items to B&M and they order what they want – we do know they have had some input in at least one set as it was reported that they didn’t want a Cyber in Earthshock as it would be 3 sets with a Cyber in (5 Docs is technically 2 with the variant and is displayed as 2 sets in my B&M). Hence the reusing to make new and reissue of variants. They have done a fantastic job with what they have available plus some money for some new smaller parts.
Companies usually make figures which are pre-ordered or they know will sell. No one is ordering CO Dr Who figures other than B&M so they aren’t making any. Simples. Their own last wave hung around forever so no wonder they aren’t chancing it again.
Licences etc are handled by BBC Enterprises marketing team with the programme makers consulted as required so RTD won’t hve any say in CO.
No way will B&M give up the dalek and TARDIS sets as they are their biggest seller!
Distribution isn’t as bad as everyone sys – its the amount of stock. I know last time the store across from work had all but only one box so I missed them. However, 3 weeks later they reappeared. They have just restocked all current sets so its a matter of patience for most stores (most not all as I know some don’t get any more!)
You can’t get rid of scalpers (they are in every walk of life) you just have to starve them of their revenue stream.
As others have said its the best its been for us in a long time and lets see if the new series from 2023 onwards produces some villains etc which are deserving of figures which will sell as there haven’t been many of late!
Coleman
December 23rd, 2021 - 11:14amReading alot on the internet as I do, it’s no longer just Dr Who figures that are unpopular but any figures at all in any Scale. Even a huge Juggernaut like Star Wars has had its fair share of problems over the last few years merchandising wise.
Basically the majority of Collectors are Adults and like any merchandise it needs its fair share of young blood to stay healthy. How ever it has been proven that the majority of children (worldwide,) are no longer interested in physical toys but are more interested in the digital age IE, iPhones, computers and Video games etc.
If this trend continues eventually the toy market will die out altogether in the foreseeable future.
(That’s not me saying this, these are facts that are back up by regular polls conducted by large companies).
Martino
December 23rd, 2021 - 12:27pmI suppose my last word on the matter is that the most important thing is that these sets sell, and sell FAST to suit B&M’s business model. Let’s not forget a lot of previous figures, stocked by Woolworths, Forbidden Planet etc. didn’t exactly fly off the shelves. Ironically, some of the slower selling figures like the Revenge of the Cybermen set, were sitting on FP’s shelves for almost a year, but are now the most sought after (and most expensive). B&M are getting it right at the moment, best not to throw ant spanners in their works.
Crosby
December 21st, 2021 - 5:28amI’m selling all mine as running out of space so I’ve decided I’m only buying the Tardis sets from now on
Martino
December 20th, 2021 - 4:36pmInitially I wasn’t interested in seeing the K1 Robot re-released, but actually these are both really nice figures and I will be grabbing them if I see them in B&M. Still trailing behind on the 2021 releases, but this and having just taken delivery of History of the Daleks set 7, bought on eBay just 4 quid over the store price, I’m still feeling excited for the range
Birdy98
December 20th, 2021 - 4:01pmI’m gutted this is coming with what is now the standard 4th doctor head. I’d rather have had a grinning unhatted head to contrast the original release.
JL
December 20th, 2021 - 12:36amWould like more modern series sets as well, I completely understand why we are getting so many classic set but there’s so many wonderful modern series figures that haven’t been released yet
I’d love to see there series 13 sontarans, personally really liked commander Skaak
Dalek Eye Stalk
December 19th, 2021 - 10:22amHmmm. I think I prefer the original collect and build release of K1. Plus I’m not keen on the facial expression on the Fourth Doctor. I will likely still purchase the set, but only keep it boxed. Probably end up buying it on eBay as usual.
the ergon
December 19th, 2021 - 10:15amI just hope Band M put these where they can be found, preferably amongst the wave just gone. Being a single release as well its sometimes hard enough to spot them on the shelf with a complete wave let alone when they do stock rotation and also depending how many they get per store making you extra vigilant.
Coleman
December 19th, 2021 - 12:30pmYeah, similar thing happened to me ergon at the Parkgate store. Picked up the Five Doctors set from a high up shelf in readiness to buy, then started walking to the cashier’s till thinking their was no other sets in stock that I was after. Then luckily the TARDIS set just caught my eye right on the bottom shelf.
Nearly walked out without it.
Robin Morgan
December 19th, 2021 - 10:00amThe B and M sets are great just a shame that they are rarely available in their stores and when you email asking where they stock them you get no reply. I have tried many stores around the country but nothing there and no gaps in the shelves for them. Began to wonder if they were actually available at all.
Tanya Morris
December 20th, 2021 - 4:42pmI’m glad it’s not just me this happens to
Popplewick
December 18th, 2021 - 8:13pmTom looks better in profile in the picture of the box than he does full face. The red stripes on my original Robots shoulders weren’t – perfect much as I liked him – so I hope to get a better one this time round.
Steve
December 18th, 2021 - 4:25pmAbsolutely stunning looking set!
This would have been good to be an online Character exclusive wouldn’t it?
Already stressing as to whether it will come into my local store lol. I’m expecting to be February or even March time before we actually see it in stores.
Kone112
December 18th, 2021 - 10:34pmI’m stressing too. Just got the last two sets I needed from the new wave last night , then I wake up to I’ve got to go from shop to shop again looking for this set in 3 weeks time. Mind you this is a cracker.
Nick J
December 18th, 2021 - 3:49pmMost of the 2021 sets never turned up at my local Leeds B&M stores, and I only got the Marinus and Sensorites sets because a friend found them in Birmingham. The delivery has been shocking this year, and B&M or Character Options don’t offer any option to order online. It’s got to the point i may stop collecting them, because there are so many gaps in my collection and I can’t afford the prices people on Amazon and Ebay resell for.
Doug Who
December 18th, 2021 - 4:19pmHi Nick
I’ve been lucky with most available at a B&M not too far away but I’ve also been able to pick up a couple on Ebay at a price not too much above (sometimes lower than) RRP a few months after release. Someone was selling loads of History Dalek #4 sets at £19.99 recently. When you factor in transport costs it’s the same for me. The other place was Gumtree where quite a few people were selling sets at cost price. I got a couple of Dalek sets that way. If you keep looking you could strike lucky eventually!
Andy
December 18th, 2021 - 6:54pmExcepting the new series sets, they always seem to sell out, so people boycotting the range is hardly going to matter to them.
TimelordTim
December 18th, 2021 - 8:51pmI’d say the 3-figure packs may sell out, but not very well as they’ve been around to get to reduced prices in many stores for the past few years (including pre-COVID). Hence why it’s worth waiting for the 3-packs on eBay for a few months, they all come down to RRP, and regularly less, after a time.
Daleks and TARDIS sets do tend to hold their value, but are certainly achievable for £30 or less on eBay with a bit of patience.
Doug Who
December 18th, 2021 - 10:03pmAbsolutely Tim, patience is the key I think! I only completed the Dalek sets (well until #6 and #8 were released) a couple of weeks ago but I haven’t spent more than twenty quid on any of them so far. Only two from B&M itself, two from Gumtree, one each from Ebay and Amazon!
Marvel sucks
December 18th, 2021 - 8:11amWould love to get this but my local b&m only got 2 sets this year and nobody has bought them. They are still sitting there – the Ian set and and the other 1st doctor set. About 8 of each.
Doug Who
December 17th, 2021 - 10:44pmEven though I’ve got these two figures I can’t wait for this set! It looks great and the tweaks to them makes it even better.
It would be great if the other ‘collect and build’ figures could be similarly re-released.
Colin Beaton
December 17th, 2021 - 10:33pmWOW , WOW , WOW , the realeses are just getting better , i would love to see a release of the 3rd doctor and bessie or the who mobile .
Well done character options

December 18th, 2021 - 2:43pmI’d love to see Bessie released!!!

December 17th, 2021 - 10:17pmid love to see the 10th Doctor articulated figure with a vesperform!!

December 18th, 2021 - 1:48amThat’d be perfect, wouldn’t it?
(Plus a Ninth and Gelth)
Sons of Skaro
December 17th, 2021 - 9:22pmI’ll definitely buy one, if I can ever find them store.
I’ve never seen any classic doctor who sets in the 2 B&M stores near me.
TimelordTim
December 17th, 2021 - 9:18pmHope this means a possible Vespiform release in the future as well, could go with a 10th or a Donna variant.

December 17th, 2021 - 9:54pmWould absolutely love to own a Vespiform figure…. Cheapest on ebay in complete form is £500
TimelordTim
December 17th, 2021 - 8:52pmLooks great, I’m tempted by this one!
I notice the line “a year in which nine new lines have been delivered to B&M”. Does this refer to the 9 that were released in 2021, or does it mean this is the first of 9 for 2022?
The ergon
December 17th, 2021 - 9:13pmI,m sure it will be same again next year tim. I want those fifth doctor companions.
TimelordTim
December 17th, 2021 - 9:23pmHi Ergon, I certainly hope so. It just confused me as we’ve had:
4x Dalek sets
4x 3-figure packs
1st and TARDIS
So if this is part of last years releases (just delayed a bit), then there have been 10 releases, not 9.
If it’s part of the 2022 range then that leaves 8 more, assuming 4x Daleks and 4x 3-packs again then that means no TARDIS in 2022.
All conjecture, just curious really. We’ll see what happens. I’m hoping for Ainley and Dhawan Master’s above all else. Then 5th companions and I can only hope for a Lucie (very unlikely I know).
The ergon
December 17th, 2021 - 9:32pmWho doesnt love lucie miller? If only sheridan had been a tv companion. That was one missed opportunity there. Hope you get your wish in 2022 and merry xmas by the way. Keep those customs coming. I,m going to complete a few in tbe new year with any luck.

December 18th, 2021 - 8:54amLooking forward to seeing your next customs Ergon, keep up the good work. Same for Coleman and Doug.
I’ve got the next batch of Warlord underway thanks to their recent sales and a couple of eBay bargains, will add them in New Year. Merry Christmas all!
The Outcast
December 18th, 2021 - 11:11amIt’s referring to this year’s sets, it’s talking past tense. I have a feeling they originally wanted to issue this set in December, and wrote most of this up then, but when it was delayed, they updated the press release, but didn’t update that line.

December 17th, 2021 - 8:24pmPity there was no Sonic Screwdriver with the Fourth Doctor. Nevertheless, a must-have!

December 17th, 2021 - 7:59pmI’m thinking this could open the door for an axon re-release, perhaps with a tie-less 3rd doctor variant.

December 17th, 2021 - 7:27pmNo tiny Sarah Jane Smith for K1 to hold?
The ergon
December 17th, 2021 - 8:43pmHey that would have been awesome. Unfortunately hes not quite the ‘giant’ robot here.

December 17th, 2021 - 7:17pmJust realised when watching this video, did Al Dewar do a video about the wave that included the 1st Doctor and TARDIS?
Glubbus
December 19th, 2021 - 5:03amThat actually looks pretty good. Tbh if CO were able to keep this level of sculpting/paint for the head (although, face printing would be preferable) with something even reminiscent of decent articulation, I’d probably go all in on the Doctor Who figures instead of picking and choosing sets with Daleks.
Fledershrew
December 17th, 2021 - 5:39pmExcellent – would definitely like the Robot Figure! Does anyone know how much this set is likely to cost? Same cost as the Tardis sets?
Coleman
December 17th, 2021 - 5:59pmShould imagine £19.99, like all the other sets. Havnt heard anything else quoted.
Whovian
December 17th, 2021 - 5:26pmI’m glad they have made this as the original build-a-figure version from more than 10 years ago isn’t in my collection and is long since gone, so will definitely try and add this to my collection and now I’m an adult, I’ll be able to fully appreciate it far more than I did when I was younger. I was always careful with my toys as a kid, but sometimes things happen.
Hopefully, it’ll be the same price range as the current sets that are out

December 17th, 2021 - 5:23pmWould be really awesome for us fans in the states, if B&M or Character, some company had an online store.
Ebay I know, and Amazon, but ding-dang they are going to be expensive.

December 17th, 2021 - 5:27pmYes. I couldn,t find the image you told me about coleman. i,ll be more than happy to take this lovely oversized robot in. December 17th, 2021 - 5:29pmTo anyone that has him on display, How tall is K1?

December 17th, 2021 - 5:56pmI think it was always supposed to be just a single set wave ergon for this year, (2021) but has been delayed until next year.

December 18th, 2021 - 10:57amHello Tim and Doug, Yes, I never had all the pieces for the Vespiform so I hope it’s definitely in next year’s CO wave.
Thanks for the Height info, just wanting to know if it would fit with the Harrops stuff, as I plan on displaying him with them.

December 18th, 2021 - 1:10pmIf it is 18 cms tall Doug, that would be excellent. Works out around 7.25 inch, so I’ll display it on a small base which will take it to around 8 inch. ( Perfect.)

December 17th, 2021 - 5:23pmConsidering all this years waves have been pushed back considerably, your probably correct. But I’m still looking forward to big fella arriving.

December 17th, 2021 - 4:28pmI’m intrigued to see this when people get it. I have the original Robot so the tweaks here don’t really hold any interest, but he has very wobbly legs and overbalanced constantly. Of all the Doctor Who toys I own, he is the one constantly nose diving! If this stands up better I could be tempted to double dip.
