Character Options is pleased to announce the next wave of Doctor Who figures for summer 2022, scheduled to land in B&M stores in September (but down to B&M when they put them out).

Each new addition to this line forms part of the 5.5” figure range and features new decoration as well as multiple points of articulation. The new sets come packaged in the familiar ‘heritage’ style Doctor Who collector packs; though, this time, there are a few changes that eagle-eyed fans might notice.

History of the Daleks 10 – ‘Death to the Daleks’ (1974)

The second History of the Daleks Set features two Daleks from the Third Doctor’s final encounter on-screen with these foes. The TARDIS suffers a complete energy drain and crash lands on the planet Exxilon and, for this story, a visually impressive, but sadly never seen again, silver and matt black livery was chosen to revive the ‘60s feel’ of the props. The first Dalek figure in the set is the ‘unofficial’ leader from this story, and sports orange-tinted dome lights, as well as having the special ‘machine gun’ style weapon, whereas Dalek figure two has clear dome lights and the standard exterminator gun.

Al Dewar Creative Director commented “I think and hope the fans and collectors will really like these new sets. We have really spent time updating the look of the figures to make them different. The Eighth Doctor set, especially the TV movie and NOTD figures are a real delight and have a much more sophisticated look, befitting a modern action figure. I think they are the best yet. The Tenth Doctor sets have a very different and fresh feel and come with two never released variants. The Dalek sets not only feature new packaging, but we have finally brought to the fans the Dalek Supreme and a fully transparent Dalek from Planet of the Daleks! And The Death to the Daleks set is also very close to my heart!”

      August 30th, 2022 - 4:32pm

It doesn’t matter. It’s just some random person on Ebay coming up with whatever price they think people will pay. It’s not worth looking up or getting concerned about.

      I agree with Jamie.

      August 19th, 2022 - 6:12pm

History of the Daleks set 9 will have to very special, I’ve too many Genesis Daleks already, but am rubbing my hands with glee to think I will be replacing my beat-up Destiny Daleks in about a years time (I’m 57, so that time will pass in a flash sob)

  • The Werewolf

    August 18th, 2022 - 8:13pm

I’m really looking forward to this one too, I’ve never been able to find these ones for a reasonable price and looking forward to it, don’t even mind ebay prices on this one if its only a slight markup.

Slight nark up you can buy 3 sets from b and m the price there asking on e,bay will this ever end?

  • TheDalekSupreme

    August 13th, 2022 - 9:29am

Just seen a review of this set and the midsection is is black all the way around, so these images must be a slight prototype/before the final product

    • booboo

      August 13th, 2022 - 9:52am

No they are not, the review samples are just that, factory samples, some sent weeks ago.

When they went into production the black paint on the back half mould of the Dalek mid section was missed.

What you see below is what you will get, this has already been confirmed.

    • [email protected]

      August 13th, 2022 - 11:27am

Yes they are, yes they may be test samples but they wouldn’t change something that quick especially after been rjust reviewed I’m sorry but you are wrong, even if you think your right on this your wrong. no offence

    • booboo

      August 13th, 2022 - 11:43am

Sorry, but i am not wrong.

This came via a representative of CO to someone on forum who was sent advanced samples.

The official images are just that and are of the final products.

Please go and read it for yourself. 3rd comment down, open forum with comments in the public domain so no issues as far I’m concerned http://doctorwhotoys.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=4&start=6770

If i thought for one minuet the official images shown here were wrong i would have made sure they were corrected.

    • TheSupremeDalek

      August 13th, 2022 - 5:37pm

Ok i’ve just read it but the reasoning doesn’t make very much sense, how could the factory miss something when they did it the first time round for the samples.
They made the samples and did it right so the reasoning is very off, as she said that the workers have a set of instructions on what to do, Obviously they had instructions for the samples so following the same instructions they messed up how is that even possible??

    • booboo

      August 13th, 2022 - 5:48pm

You really need to direct your questions to the people involved, we are not in that loop.

so how do we paint these things lol

    • The ergon

    • beef

      August 12th, 2022 - 12:06pm

but how do you get the slats off without damaging them?

    • booboo

      August 12th, 2022 - 12:37pm

if you know what you are doing i think you can put the Dalek in very hot water so they (the slats) expand (soft plastic) and then slide off, don’t blame if it goes wrong though!

    • pupbenny

      August 12th, 2022 - 1:03pm

I’d probably just get a paintbrush and go around behind the top of the slats in black. Seems like that’d be a pretty easy fix in terms of what you’d be able to see, I think?

The gun might be more difficult, or the ball joint rather. I’ve heard that can be difficult to paint what with it rubbing off easily if you try to move it.

    • The ergon

      August 12th, 2022 - 1:11pm

I just mask the areas where ill not be spraying.

    • Scott

      August 12th, 2022 - 11:57pm

You know I’ve felt so disappointed and let down by these latest History of the dalek sets but I’m glad it doesn’t seem to be just me being over reactive, it seems a lot of other echo my thoughts. The original machine was is rare now and it would have been so very nice to have had a like for like re release but no, we get a botched set with insult to injury that the packaging is now bloody awful. Same goes for the Planet set and the less accurate paint on the supreme and inferior anti light wave.
I feel better seeing that the majority of us collectors feel this same frustration.

    • the Ergon

      August 13th, 2022 - 9:14am

I feel the same. Little thought and care for the customer. And not giving much incentive to buy. You,d have thought they,d have got the Daleks right. The face paint apps on the 3 packs are an improvement but there is little effort in other detailing. I deeply regret letting my older stock go now.

    • beef

      August 13th, 2022 - 7:09pm

dalek sets always sell out anyway so its not even as if they have an incentive to get the paint job right for us whiners

    • Martino

      August 16th, 2022 - 11:34am

Everyone should just put a couple of these Daleks in a bag and give them a good shake until they’re covered in scratches, flaking paintwork, dents, broken bits etc. Voila! Screen accurate Daleks!

  • D

    August 12th, 2022 - 9:46am

Any general idea on when they’ll be released? Some people are saying later August but, others are saying in September.

    • booboo

      August 12th, 2022 - 9:53am

warehouse showing 12/9 but that doesn’t me they will be on the shelves then, press release said late August.

It all been a bit “fluid” that couple of years

    • Spike Hellyer

      August 21st, 2022 - 3:42pm

I am looking out for these history of the daleks sets no matter what people think of them I am just happy to have classic daleks on display because to be honest I don’t really care about the way they look I just think that they have made them and they cannot go back and repaint themalso when will these sets be arriving in local b&m stores because I really want to get my hands on these two dalek sets no matter what condition they are in I simply just want the figures and that is all I am looking for so if somebody could please let me know when they do then I will head out to find them both history of the daleks #9 & #10 also the tenth doctor figure set

    • booboo

      August 21st, 2022 - 3:45pm

this site will let you know when they arrive and do a map where they have been found

    • Spike Hellyer

      August 21st, 2022 - 4:02pm

      Cheers to you booboo

  • booboo

    August 11th, 2022 - 9:35pm

apparently some advanced samples have the black paint all the way round, however, the protection run (what will end up in stores) does not, so what you see in the promo images is what you will get,

    • The ergon

      August 12th, 2022 - 12:04am

But from what ive seen they are packaged exactly as they were in the story. Had me worried i might have to spray them. Dont know what people are talking about with black gun stick. Its silver in the images as well.

    • pupbenny

      August 12th, 2022 - 12:30am

      Aw man that’s a shame.

I’m guessing we can assume it’s down to costs that they painted a few advanced samples but the actual ones will be as pictured?

    • booboo

      August 12th, 2022 - 7:32am

dont think its do with costs to be honset

    • Rex Farrel

      August 12th, 2022 - 12:47am

The boys from B&M have paid Ergon a visit I think? Kept telling him Arc of Infinity was rubbish until he cracked?

    • Luck4Unow

      August 12th, 2022 - 10:05am

Bit of a shame because this was the dalek set out of the whole History of the Daleks range I was most looking forward to.

Death to Daleks daleks are very hard to find and go for silly prices. Shame that after all these years of waiting they are coming out with a glaring paint-app error and the gun is still the wrong color. Honestly, I can forgive the changes in packaging and budgetary cuts in this year’s wave, but this is just an unneeded kick to the gut for this collector.

    • the Ergon

      August 12th, 2022 - 10:29am

You have your wires crossed Rex. You obviously misconstrued what i meant and what I asked in previous comments. i,m not interested in the samples with the black paint that go all the way around. I just want the daleks to look screen authentic.

    • booboo

      August 12th, 2022 - 10:53am

not sure what you mean, on screen the guns on the Standard Daleks in “Death to the Daleks” (as opposed to the one with the special ‘machine gun’) are Black, the mid section is also all black on screen as opposed to those shown below where it stops half way round, so those packaged as below aren’t screen accurate sadly.

    • the Ergon

      August 12th, 2022 - 10:50am

Booboo, in laymans terms can you explain what people are referring to by wrong paint app on these. All i,m seeing are daleks that are screen perfect from images from that story. i had to check myself to be sure.

    • booboo

      August 12th, 2022 - 11:05am

Black guns, paint on midsection stops half way round on production model above slats (and under them but you wont see that)

Collectors want stuff just so, and these are collector sets after all. some wont notice or bother that much and for others who want them “screen accurate” it just spoils them
      null

    • the Ergon

      August 12th, 2022 - 11:10am

Yes i,ve just rechecked and youre right about the guns and mid section on some of them. It was the machine gun daleks i was looking at. Seems ill have to get the black spray out after all. i,m very meticulous about accuracy as well.

    • pupbenny

      August 12th, 2022 - 1:06pm

You think it might just be production error, booboo?

    • booboo

      August 12th, 2022 - 1:29pm

      i think so.

    • CARL BROWN

      August 24th, 2022 - 9:38pm

      Hi Boohoo

Do you know if B&M still stock the history of the Dalek sets, I have been to a couple in the South East recently and no sign of any of them

    • booboo

      August 25th, 2022 - 9:16am

All the last lot would have long sold out but sets 9 and 10 haven’t arrived yet

  • Martino

    August 11th, 2022 - 10:33am

I’m wondering what the Davros and Dalek/next History of the Daleks set is going to look like – are we going to get another Genesis Davros then leapfrog to Destiny? Either way, Davros would be too fragile for this sort of packaging.

    • Philip Shaw

      August 11th, 2022 - 12:21pm

Maybe the Genesis Davros will come with a ‘gunless’ grey dalek with the gun accessory seperate. Then they can have 2 gunned versions in the History set. Too much to hope we will get Nyder figure with Davros. Unless of course with this years use of multiple figures of the same character we have both a Genesis and Destiny Davros in the same pack!

    • The ergon

      August 11th, 2022 - 12:39pm

      Destiny bomb daleks please.

    • Philip Shaw

      August 11th, 2022 - 1:06pm

The Davros set is £25 if I remember probably for better tooling and sturdier packaging.

    • booboo

      August 11th, 2022 - 1:10pm

      yes it is.

  • Dalek lover

    August 11th, 2022 - 9:30am

Will be only buying dalek sets this year as I imagine the next batch will be rubbish to,more cost,no background images,no sonic screwdrivers, just a primeval bag which you can buy cheap on ebay, what’s the point and let’s hope when character options site is back up and running so we get something decent.

    • Martino

      August 10th, 2022 - 5:44pm

The last few years have been thrilling, and this first wave is no exception. If I get the opportunity, I will buy three of these sets – not so keen on having any more Tens, but maybe I will be army-building ‘Deaths’ if I see any. Looking ahead, I can’t imagine what figures we will get along the way by the time we reach History of the Daleks 12, 13 etc., and THAT’S exciting! Glass half full! Diorama’s are a nice bonus, but that’s all.

    • booboo

      August 10th, 2022 - 5:52pm

8th is the least attractive to me as we have everything that’s gone before, the 10th at least has the raggedy comic 10th but that pushing it a bit.

Wont be rushing out for those 2

      Backgrounds never bothered me

I dont think many have picked up on the fact the Dalek boxes dont seem to have perspex fronts, just Dalek moulded plastic inside the box.

I can see those getting bit bashed about to be honest

    • Dalek Eye Stalk

      August 10th, 2022 - 10:20pm

I absolutely hate the packaging on the Dalek sets. For those of us collectors who keep the previous boxsets boxed, these newer releases will look out of place with the others. No outer plastic cover, and dull backing card. Money saving cheaper packaging, that could likely damage the Daleks inside.

    • Spectrox

      August 11th, 2022 - 8:19am

Dalek lover only 5 B&M sets of around 64 have had sonic screwdrivers… nothing to complain about.

    • mark stevenson

      August 11th, 2022 - 9:58am

i see these sets have no back grounds either how cheap is that

    • mark stevenson

      August 11th, 2022 - 10:07am

i think these ones will be a disapointting dalek releases with no back grounds from the show no perspex fronts very cheaply done spoils the dalek collection

  • Rex Farrel

    August 10th, 2022 - 3:54pm

Are these pictures of the final product, or just the first test run? As in, might the final product have some extra black paint? A real shame though if they can’t even stretch the budget to one extra solid paint app these days – that’s when you know things are really tight. (Any rich people around who want to commission Character for some exclusives?)

    • booboo

      August 10th, 2022 - 4:22pm

We only get the press release these days from the PR company along with what seems like 100’s of others.

Those who get the samples are in direct contact with Character so there is no reason why they can’t find out whats going on here.

Bottom line is some are painted some are not but we can’t help answer as to why sorry.

    • Rex Farrel

      August 10th, 2022 - 11:02pm

Cheers Booboo. The ways companies and PR behave are one of modern life’s great mysteries… And apologies for posting a duplicate question, which is one of my pet hates (I was watching the telly and took too long to hit post – I notice the time is *exactly* when the programme finished…)

    • Peter C

      August 12th, 2022 - 2:25pm

Also it looks like the boxes are a test thing. I know what people are saying about the plastic fronts not being there but seeing as how a few of the other sets were pictured like this previously and they’ve all up to now had plastic covers, I can’t see these changing to be honest, as like said earlier, there’ll be a lot of damaged stock. Seems really cheap cost cutting to the extreme. I get that the backgrounds have gone, but to not outer package the product as before is a bit of a risk for them if they want to shift stock and not have too many damaged. Still, let’s wait and see what turns up, if anything in my B & M!!

  • pupbenny

    August 10th, 2022 - 2:50pm

Not sure if it’s true, but just saw a tweet saying that some preview sets are fully painted black around the mid-section. I’ve seen one review of a preview set and they weren’t in that and can’t find any other reviews or pictures.

Can anyone confirm if this is just BS?

    • Drwhofan12

      August 10th, 2022 - 2:53pm

I just looked on some YouTube reviews and it’s not fully painted

    • booboo

      August 10th, 2022 - 3:08pm

They are on others I have seen

    • pupbenny

      August 10th, 2022 - 3:10pm

Oh that is fantastic!!!! Or, at least, a sign that hopefully some of them may be in the actual figures. (Unless maybe it’s just for previews…. hopefully not though.)

    • Drwhofan12

      August 10th, 2022 - 3:11pm

We will just have to wait and see anyway

Couldn’t they of put the Exillon city on the backdrop

    • Martino

      August 10th, 2022 - 2:17pm

I’m assuming the diorama had to go to cut production costs and make these figures more likely – and I imagine not many people actually keep the packaging anyway (that is to say, I very rarely see any for sale on eBay when people are selling their figures). The Master/Axos diorama is my favourite to date …

  • Anonymous

    August 9th, 2022 - 11:34pm

And will these be as hard to come by as previous sets? I never did find the “Day of the Daleks” set, and was really lucky to get “The Power of the Daleks” one from B&M.

    • Martino

      August 10th, 2022 - 11:03am

Of all the sets released, I imagine the ‘Death’ set will attract a lot more casual buyers. They just look so good. I’ll be checking my (Willesden) branch daily starting Saturday (I use it for other shopping anyway, so it’s not so much of an issue for me), though they never stocked last year’s TARDIS or Dalek sets at all.

    • John

      Martino – I wouldn’t bother. Its reported el;sewhere available from 12/9.

      Oh I’m a regular B&M shopper anyway ;o)

  • Robbie Martin

    August 9th, 2022 - 9:41pm

I’m sorry but… really! The gun is not black again, the black doesn’t go round the sides again!!! And they are more expensive!!!

    • Anonymous

      August 10th, 2022 - 2:24am

      Than the ogs?

    • Martino

      August 10th, 2022 - 11:09am

You don’t do your household shopping then? EVERYTHING is more expensive. My favourite brand of instant coffee has gone up £2 since last summer! This is actually quite a small increase, when you factor in all the new red tape etc. getting these figures here from China.

    • 3rd Doctor

      August 10th, 2022 - 11:20am

The gun should be black. The black should go all the way around the mid section. It’s a bit tedious they are not as accurate.

I might just buy a spare set and spray that gun and mid section myself. The same with the supreme.

on some of the review samples the mid section is painted all the way round apparently

I hope then they have done the same for the supreme dalek booboo. The guns would be a doddle to spray.

Nice set, but shouldn’t the gun be black?

Yes it should. The traditional Dalek gun stick is black with a black ball socket joint.

CO made the same the same mistake on the original release.

Great set, the ‘Death’ daleks were pretty expensive to buy so its great that B&M have released them in a set so that dalek fans will be able to buy them so they can add them to their collection

No artwork on the back of the box behind the Daleks! Gone back to the dull, boring grey and white stripes. 🙁

A fine looking set. I was hoping we’d get a novel figure in the set – Bellal or something – but this is pretty much what I expected. i did think both figures would have interchangeable weapons, like the TRU Genesis of the Daleks set, so you could choose to have two machine gunners or two malfunction Daleks – but it’s good to see these all the same. I’ll take two please!

Mid section not fully painted, why? What’s going on this year? That’s a bad oversight, the transparent dalek is a let down compared to the original in the other set and backdrops gone too. A very limited range as well this year. Sadly this is dropping below the levels that excite me anymore, things like that are just not good enough tbh. I would rather pay more to have a painted mid section, oh dear, not a good sign for where this line is going.

These are nice as the have a great colour sceme and the gun is unique

This was the set I’ve been looking forward to. My first thought on seeing this is ‘I hope the guns are interchangeable’. That’s be really cool if so!!

A shame the exterminator arm isn’t the accurate black. Surprised about that, surely it can’t be that hard or expensive to just paint the arm black like the sucker? And I also wonder if only painting part of the mid-section is a cost-saving measure? Must be, it’s a really odd trend that CO have started doing now a days. Considering no Daleks in history (afaik) have had this look it’s, again, a great shame.

Overall, was looking forward to this set, yet the only thing that comes to mind when analysing it is ‘shame’, which is perhaps why I shouldn’t analyze it haha. Just a missed opportunity to do justice to possibly my favourite Dalek variant.

Are there any differences between the original releases and these? (Besides electronics)
Normally there are minor detail improvements and corrections, but I’m not seeing anything and as others have pointed out, the gun is the wrong colour again

It’s a shame that the mid section is not fully painted and that once again the gun has been painted silver. Also am I seeing things or has the mesh gotten a new sculpt?

The gun should be black – still this set will be very popular
