Doctor Who The Women Who Lived

Available to order from www.amazon.co.uk

This September,BBC Books will publish Doctor Who: The Women Who Lived, a beautifully illustrated collection of inspiring tales ofthe women of Doctor Who. It will be the first official book published to accompany the new series, celebrating Jodie Whittaker’s debut as the Thirteenth Doctor.

Written by Christel Dee, former presenter of Doctor Who: The Fan Show, and Simon Guerrier, the book will featuremore than 75 inspiring talesof remarkable women of the Whoniverse, both real and imagined. From historical figures such as Agatha Christie and Queen Victoria to fan favourites like Bill Potts and River Song, each woman has made a unique contribution to the world of Doctor Who.

Whether they’re facing down Daleks or thwarting a Nestene invasion, these women don’t hang around waiting to be rescued – they roll their sleeves up and get stuck in. Scientists and soldiers, queens and canteen workers, women from outlandish science-fiction and those steeped in real history, they don’t let anything hold them back.

Illustrated throughout with specially-commissionedartwork by a team of female artists – including Gwen Burns, Valentina Mozzo, Sonia Leong, and more – the book also features new companion Yasmin, and an extended entry on the Doctor herself.

The first actual feminist product being put out of the BBC. Three notes: The cover looks a little awful. Written by Christel Dee, don’t get me wrong, it’s fine but as a person and running the Fan Show no one really likes her. And it’s new series companions…not getting the book

    Typical
Just New Who companions not actual women who had to fight for where they were like Liz or Barbara

Exactly! Where’s there is a story to be told they’ve completely avoided it would seem!

Funny really. River Song is far and away a poorly created female character, constantly flirting and overly “sexy”. There’s Bill Potts who had constantly keep reminding other characters and the audience of her sexuality. Then there’s Idris, not really a female character at all. Oh, and of course “Missy”, another flirty character who, quite frankly is you count Television bodies, is still an over whelming male character (as is the Doctor). Also, “women are the beating heart of Doctor Who”? I don’t think so. They are some of the beating hearts but what about the Brig? What about Ian? What about Jack? Lets not forget the male characters and those behind the scenes, such as Sydney Newman, RTD or even Tom Baker.

Amy and Rory reminded everyone of their sexuality every episode as well, I don’t remember there being such a series of complaints about that, I wonder why?

Also do you actually think that women don’t flirt and if they do they aren’t good characters? You seem to be totally shut off in your view of female and queer characters

    • SpacePiggy

      July 20th, 2018 - 8:44pm

Did Amy and Rory go around telling everyone, just to hammer home the point, that they were a straight couple every episode? No. Did Captain Jack go around telling everyone about his sexuality? No. It was just part of his character and left at that. I didn’t say females don’t flirt, but River Song and Moffat’s Master were built largely on them being so. A character should not be defined by their sexuality which Bill largely was in many cases.

Just because Amy was flirty doesn’t mean sexism isn’t wrong!

And spacepiggy just proves the point about why we need books like this.

I was thinking the exact same thing about Amy and Rory but I’m just too tired to speak to people like this

Hate to point this out but the reason this is called the women who lived is because for women life isn’t equal. Woman have been ignored and sidelined for centuries, unfortunately for most people equality doesn’t mean a thing. It’s all very well saying it should be people and where’s the book about the men who lived, but look at even just the last 55 years of who. How many female writers? How many female directors? There was one female producer in the first 26 years and she was chaparoned for most of her time. And look at the blind hatred for a female doctor – a doctor who people are dismissing and criticising on the strength of one teaser trailer and a short season trailer! Every girl i know has suffered sexism from school through to work in many forms. So yes, this is called the women who lived. And quite right too.

It’s like if they released a book about the strong black characters who’ve helped the doctor for black history month of the lgbt companions and comrades who have aided him for pride month there’d still be white people or straight people demanding their own version, completely missing the message altogether

I would rather prefer a “The People Who Lived”.
    My silly old opinion.

Got no problem with the doctor being female. Just hoped there wouldn’t be this big a fuss over it.
I don’t see a The Men who Lived, nor do I want one.
I would like a book that represents all of humanity not just 50% of it.
A “The People Who Lived” would be a better choice.
Then again this is my silly opinion and you don’t have to agree with me.

      July 20th, 2018 - 8:21pm

The doctor is now a female for the first time in history so i think that warrants a woman who lived book to celebrate the female influences in the doctors life. I don’t seen the issue

    • Jackson Redfield

      July 20th, 2018 - 8:59pm

My issue is equality. We need a book that celebrates everyone who helped the Mad Time Lord with a Box. that celebrates humanity and how they Helped a god like alien. Here you are just missing out on a half of humanity

If you wanna do something that celebrates woman. Then include everyone in that demographic and don’t forget many important characters that helped the Doctor. Sarah Jane, Polly, and Liz should be on there

I see no point in this book being made
Honestly, I don’t see any The Men Who Lived, I am Don’t want a Me who Lived. I would like a book about the People Who Lived. I Hope for a book that celebrates all of humanity and not only one 50% of it.

It says it’s coming September 27th and the new companions on the front. Could the first episode of series 11 have aired by then do we think?

So I’m guessing this is this year’s anthology collection, something akin to Time Lord Fairy Tales? As in, it’s short stories that aren’t necessarily following each Doctor 1-12, rather it’s just a group of short stories featuring female characters? But it’s got Missy, so I’m down.

I was really worried this was going to be another Ashildr-based product for a moment. Panic over, this sounds pretty decent

Looking again it might be short stories, but it’s quite pricey at £16.99 need to find out more about it before i order it.

So is this the year’s 12 story anthology like 12 Doctors, 12 Stories, 12 Doctors of Christmas, Tales of Terror, etc.?
