Yesteryear Feature – Dapol 35th Anniversary set

Between 1987 and 2001 Dapol held the licenses for making Doctor Who products. They produced a wide range of Doctor Who toys, many of which are now considered highly collectable.

This is a very rare set limited to 350 units. It contained notable variants including the Dapol Tardis with gold windows and roundels, Davros with gold spheres and console and k9 with 35th anniversary printed on the side. Standard figures included were the 3rd Doctor, The Master and a Timelord.

David Boyle founded DAPOL model railways in 1983. For many years DAPOL had the licence from the BBC to manufacture Dr Who figures.

David also operated the Dr Who Exhibitions in Llangollen and Blackpool. He spent his twilight years living in Lytham St Annes.

David was well known within his local community. He loved dressing up and driving his beloved Dr Who car Bessie in the local carnival parades.

Leaflets advertising the set and the offer to have your own name engraved on a 35th anniversary Tardis now incredibly rare…

I liked Dapol. I know some figures were not that good. Melkur was very good though.
I use the Console with my CO 5″ figures and it works with them.

I have to say, I quite like the Master from this old set.

My favourite Dapol releases were the Millennium Daleks though… even if they made no sense whatsoever. Sparkly glitter Daleks ahoy! 😛

Dapol were the figures I grew up with so always have a soft spot for them but thinking about it… this set makes no sense ! The 3rd Doctor goes with the Master but Davros, K9 and Timelord style were part of the fourth Doctor era. The Timelord looks very happy about something… maybe he’s the one who put the lipstick on Davros. They do look good in gold though.

This reminds me of the best Dapol had to offer fans…I will never complain about Character Options ever again. We have it so good these days – CO spoil us…they really do. I know the prices of FP exclusives can be high, but from what I remember Dapol could be expensive for the time too.

This set would be a lovely piece to have in a collection…but I’m rather pleased Dapol very much a thing of the past.

The gold variants are a nice idea, actually. The figures look terrible, but I like the added gold. I wouldn’t mind buying a CO TARDIS with golden window frames, St. John’s Ambulance sign and the like for the 50th anniversary. 😉 It’d be pretty cool.
