With the TARDIS stranded due to a chronic shortage vital mineral Zyton-7, the Doctor is able to make an emergency landing on the planet Varos which is rich in the substance. There he encounters a race of people forced to work hard in the mines and whose only entertainment comes from watching mindless violence on television and voting on whether or not contestants should be killed.

Have fun with an old black and white story. πŸ˜†

Wouldn’t you rather get a fun Doctor Who story ? Something from the 70s or 80s ? ❓

Nothing wrong with 60’s b and w who. I find a lot of 60’s who just as enjoyable nd fun as the 70’s and 80’s

      Really ?

      Well good for you.

I just get afew William Hartnell stories on VHS when my Xbox is unavailable. (you know it got taken off me afew times, and it had to be sent away for repairs once).

Anyway, William Hartnell’s first three stories are great I have seen them and hope to see the War Machines and the Time Meddler. Shame Marco Polo is lost, I would have liked to have seen what made that massive footprint ! ❗

    This DVD is AMAZING.

Shame Colin Baker for whatever reason, hasn’t had any further contribution to the DVD.

I always find it interesting to hear what he has to say. Anyway, who else thought this story could have done with a little CGI laser-blaster effects on the laser-blaster guns ? πŸ˜‰

They’re not too bad, but a little CGI lasers instead, probably would have looke better.

Why aren’t 2Entertain doing the CGI stuff anymore ?

    • Gordon

      July 2nd, 2012 - 7:52am

No the effects are fine the way they are. I dont know if colin has been interviewed for the dvd but his original commentary is on the new dvd so it wouldnt be a total loss. Main reasons why they havent is cost (invasion of the dinosaurs) or titles not needing cgi effects. Plus they have said that day of the daleks was the last planned cgi story. Terror of the zygons is getting something special planned but its been specificly stated ITS NOT CGI

      Okay.

      Yeah, that’s alright.

Terrible a story as it is, I must say that is would be a waste to have CGI effects on that mess of a story, Resurrection of the Daleks. I’m glad they did Day instead. πŸ™‚

SHE DESERVES IT.SHE WAS AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE PERTWEE ERA. I,M GOING TO HAVE A LITTLE TRIBUTE OF MY OWN AND SETTLE TO THE 3 WHO DVDS FROM HER TIME, AND THE FIVE DOCTORS. R.I.P. CAROLINE, WE ALL MISS YOU.

    • gordon

      June 23rd, 2012 - 8:10am

All depends on how much of a budget they still have left over from the new restoration of inferno and new extras as they will have been alocated only a certain ammount. Another thing appart from terrance Dicks Derek Shirwan and at a push John Levine there really isnt much regulars they can interview for a tribute on her time on the show. I supose they can have archive footage but most of that will be from other releases.

    Looking forward to this release!
Anyways I’ve got Β£35 for Classic Who DVDs, and I’ve decided I’ll get Revisitations 1 because Caves and Talons are so highly rated.
This means, that because the other single releases are about Β£7 each, I can get two of them. I want to get the best of Classic Who I haven’t got, which is alot! I have loads of ‘duds’. The trouble is I don’t want to buy stories that will be re-released in Special Editions in the next few years.

Deadly assasin and day of the daleks. Especially day as its got a special edition on disc 2 with new dalek voices and cgi. I doubt if earthshock or city of death will get rereleased. both look good restoration wise and both have good set of extras

Oh yes. Its a really gripping story.Great performances all round and one of the most sympathetic villians due to his circumstances. Also the cliffhangers of episodes 1 and 3 being some of the best in the show’s almost 50 year history.

I take it you mean more info on the legacy box. There really isnt much info.Legacy box will contain the unfinished shada and the documentary. There maybe other items in the boxset but nothing has been announced. How the gaps in shada will be filled is currently unknown but it has been hinted its the naration that tom baker recorded for the vhs in 1992. It defenitly wont be the ian levine animated shada project that he worked on as that was turned down.

    • gordon

      June 17th, 2012 - 12:37am

Shada will come with at least 2 documentarys 1. a making of called taken out of time
2.then and now a look at locations today.

The exact release date has not been comfirmed but was announced by classic dw twitter as a likely release for 2012. Going by the current schedule dont expect a release till october at the earliest

THERES RUMOURS THEY MAY STILL REISSUS THE’ LOST IN TIME’ ON DVD. IF THEY DO I HOPE THEY PUT THOSE MISSING EPISODES ON…I;E:THE UNDERWATER MENACE 2 AND 3 IN ORDER. FANS WOULD HATE TO PAY OUT AGAIN, SO MAYBE FOR THE FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY THEY COULD INCLUDE ALL NEW COMMENTARIES ON THOSE MISSING EPISODES AND POSSIBLY ANIMATE SAY THE MOONBASE MISSING EPISODES AS A NEW INCLUSION.

    • gordon

      June 17th, 2012 - 11:33am

Most likely as a pdf file acsessed by putting the disc in the computer. If its true that they are putting the tom baker linking naration on the dvd that has been hinted by steve roberts then this is 1 release that just doesnt intrest me. Not a fan of it im affraid.

It’s such a bad story I never got it and I’ve never seen the whole episode, it’s furrowly aweful !!

It was badly made (very little money, then again I’m glad they spent little on it because then there was more money for the GOOD stories of the season).

And badly written because the Doctor and Peri are bickering so much, when they had gotten past that stage in the relationship, so why are they bickering like this all of a sudden ?! ❗

Some people like me are ‘completists’ who like to have complete collections. And, frankly, I don’t think Timelash is that bad. Not a brilliant story but it does have some interesting ideas and the Borad is a brilliant mask. It’s just a shame that it’s wedged in between The Two Doctors and Revelation of the Daleks. And that it’s a very unfortunate anagram of something rude but accurate.

I think they will wait till they find out what the sales figures for reign of terror is first before they decide whether or not to animate other stories outwith 10th planet and ice warriors. Even if reign is a big seller its not a garantee of more animated stories. It has to both sell well and make a profit. If it doesnt make a profit i cant see the folk with the checkbooks agreeing to any more animation

    • Anonymous

      June 4th, 2012 - 11:15am

I AGREE WITH THE ANIMATION FOR THE UNDERWATER MENACE OR PERHAPS THEY COULD HAVE REISSUED THE LOST IN TIME DVD AND PUT BOTH EPISODES OF THAT STORY AND GALAXY 4 ON THERE INSTEAD OF PUTTING THESE EPISODES ALONGSIDE THE ICE WARRIORS AND THE TENTH PLANET.

    • gordon

      June 5th, 2012 - 8:45am

I think a lost in time reissue is a bad idea. Some Fans will get annoyed to get the 2 episodes they have to rebuy a boxset that they already own.It would be a similar situation as when terror of the autons got first announced in a box with a reissued spearhead. The only way fans would be happy if lit was reissued with animated crusade, underwater menace and moonbase with their own seperate cases which i cant see happening as its not financially viable to animate 6 episodes in a box set at this time. That is why i think lit reissue wont happen

    • gordon

      June 5th, 2012 - 9:19am

Currently going by the current financial climate at most we can expect for animated releases is 2 episodes.Providing reign of terror is a sucsess (dan hall has said future animations would depend on how well reign does, if it makes a profit and how well the reception is for the style of animation ) We could potentiallyexpect:
      The Crusade
      Tenth planet*
      The Underwater menace*
      Moonbase*
      The Ice warriors*
*= Has footage that is unreleased on dvd and is more likely to get animated and in the case of 10th planet and warriors already been hinted

    • gordon

      June 5th, 2012 - 9:30am

Didnt include mission the unknown as i see it as part of masterplan. Plus trying to get people to part with 13 quid for 1 ep (they would have to sell it at that price to make money) might be a hardsell (personally id buy it depending on extras but to a lot of folk 13 quid for 1 ep is just too expensive and not financially worth it). Maybe in 5-10 years time animation cost will have come down to animate 3 episode stories so we might get toymaker/galaxy 4 but beyond that i doubt we will get anything that has 4 eps upwards in this lifetime atleast

    • Anonymous

      June 5th, 2012 - 11:02am

I GET WHAT YOUR SAYING REGARDING THE LOST IN TIME REISSUE, I PERSONALLY THINK BY JUST BY PUTTING THOSE TWO ‘UNDERWATER’ EPISODES TOGETHER WOULD BE LESS HASSLE AND BETTER TO WATCH TOGETHER RATHER THAN HAVING TO INSERT 2 DVDS,JUST SAVING TIME REALLY. LIKE YOU SAY IT WOULDNT BE DONE UNLESS THEY ANIMATED EPS 1 AND 4.ITS JUST EASIER TO LISTEN THE LOST COLLECTIONS ON CD.

Ark in space (Didnt get a proper full colour grade,Restoration Looks poor in comparison to other 4th doctor stories No making of)

    • matparks08

      May 31st, 2012 - 8:51pm

I think we could see lots of special editions rather in 2013 – not just because of it being the anniversary year but because of wjat’s left to release on dvd – apart from Terror of Zygons what full complete storys are left (that don’t need work) – make it a special year and bring out one ‘special edition’ for each doctor. Now there’s a thread….!

    • Anonymous

      May 31st, 2012 - 9:22pm

All the stories need work, that’s just a fact of it being an old show.

But after these they still have The Ambassadors of Death (which appears to be finished now), The Mind of Evil (which cannot be restored fully) and Terror of the Zygons.

    • Gordon

      May 31st, 2012 - 10:37pm

Mind of evil is coming out restored fully. Episodes 2 to 6 have been recoloured using colour recovery(still a lot of post processing work to do) plus babelcolour is colourising ep1 with a bit of help with motion estimation. Esentially babelcolour coloursises every fifth frame instead of every single one and motion estimation does the rest.He has about 7000 frames to colourise so we might have to wait till later than 2013

    • Gordon

      June 1st, 2012 - 9:15am

As for Matparks08 suggestion of lots of Special editions. I can see maybe 5 or 6 revisits to give us a full year of releases possibly more if animation on 10th planet/ice warriors (if they get animated) is late or mind of evil restoration isnt on time.

    • Gordon

      June 1st, 2012 - 9:20am

      Im hopefull for 2013
      10th planet (with galaxy 4 ep 3)
      Ice warriors
      Mind of evil
      Terror of the zygons

      Special Editions
      The Aztecs (Picture quality improvemnt)
      Inferno (PQI)
      Claws of Axos (PQI)
      Ark in space (PQI extras)
      The Visitation (extras)
      2 doctors (extras)
Silver nemises (extended, only released 2010 so prob wont happen)

Made sure all doctors are covered
Would have put underwater menace ep 2 with ice warriors but its currently rumoured to get animated and if it is so i doubt it will get released 2013 due to length of time animation takes.

      June 9th, 2012 - 5:05pm

Really ? They’re going to rerelease Inferno ?! But it already has two discs and the 2Entertain logo !

They should re-release “Two Doctors” and give it a better cover, a big orange picture of a Sontaran isn’t right for the story because the Sontarans aren’t really the main bad guys in it.

It should have a cover that puts more emphasis on the Doctors, and have Peri and Jamie.

    • gordon

      June 11th, 2012 - 7:39pm

Just because its got 2 discs and has the 2 e logo doesnt rule it out of a rerelease. The fact is the original version of inferno is the original restoration though good at the time is pretty poor compared to more recent releases. Since the 2006 release the restoration for the RSC technique has come leeps and bounds and inferno will look much better.

    • gordon

      June 11th, 2012 - 7:41pm

Appart from a better dvd cover 2 docs wont be improved restoration wise and there isnt much more extras that could be added appart from a making of. And a better cover and making of would probably not be enough to warrent a SE

    • McGann is The Doctor.

      June 15th, 2012 - 5:04pm

Surely Inferno does not require any re-release it already has adequate special features, and the DVD WAS made by the 2Entertain company because it has their logo.

The Vistitation, Two Doctors, perhaps Earthshock and also the Ark In Space are due for a rerelease. πŸ˜› Revisitations 5 perhaps ?

    • gordon

      June 15th, 2012 - 10:51pm

Yes it does require a rerelease. The picture quality could be vastly improved due to technical advances in the restoration process since the original dvd release. Picture quality of inferno is poor compared with what they can acheive now. The picture quality of the new version will be much better

think forbidden planet have cheapest daleks at mo. u might want to wait til september for release of talking 5″ daleks (im assuming they will launch with start of series 7’s dalek opener).

full size tardis very disapointing as not as detailed as 10th docs one. but junk yard one is better.

The Reign of Terror or The Ambassadors of Death I believe, as special features have been cleared for Ambassadors on BBFC website and Reign of Terror is a 2012 release

    • Gordon

      May 31st, 2012 - 9:41am

Its ambassadors next (going by the bbfc extras being passed). Its going to either be The legacy box (shada/more than thirty years in the tardis) or reign of terror after ambassadors. Both were announced by classicdw as likely 2012 releases. Unless they have november releases which they havent for about 5 years i doubt they will have enough time to release ambassadors, legacy and reign and expect 1 of them to drop to next year (probably legacy).

Why Have They Decided To Release “Vengance On Varos” Again On Dvd But In Special Edition

If you look at all the original Dr Who dvd releases the very first ones have the most dreadful covers, so for collectors, it’s nice to have a collection that actually looks good! (hence re-released Remembrance of Daleks, 5 Doctors, Robots of Death, etc) – also, after (what, 10 years?) there’s possibly more special features. It also means we get a Colin Baker release (1st one for a few years now)…and if none of that pleases you as an answer it’s because Vengeance is 80s Who at its brutal best and it deserves it!

Reasons why they have done a special edition.

1.The original dvd is 10 years old
      2.The original cover is awful
3.The pic of colin in the spineof the original is wrong compared to other releases
4.The original didnt have a making of
      5. They have added almost 3 hours of new extra features
6.There was an error of the production notes in the original release
      7. Fans requested it after it was originally dropped from the rev 2 box set.
      8. 4 new audio versions

I hope the Saturday superstore clip is the one from 1985. I phoned in and spoke to Colin Baker aged 15! It would mean i will be on two Doctor Who DVDs.
