I am an obsessive collector of doctor who dvds and blu rays.
Recently I have started collecting the limited edition German releases….. and I have to say; the content and quality are exceptional.
I have the complete 7th doctor collection which makes the regeneration coffee table book look like an amateur release. My latest addition has been the Special L/E collectors mediabook of Shada. Well….what can I say…. WOW! Amazing. A beautiful collection within a stylish compact bax. Putting the extra collectables to one side , the mediabook is exceptional. As well as a great booklet built into the mediabook, there are 5 …yes FIVE discs providing the story on both dvd and Blu-ray. Across the five discs you are provided the 1992 VHS version, the original animated version, the mcgann webcast, and the definitive episodic version previously only available within the Season 17 collection set. Every version you could want hassle free and tidily presented over the 5 discs.

As my German l/e collection grows there are a number of items across the sets that build into their own collectors collections, such as the autographed art cards and 3d lenticular cover art art cards.

These German releases have clearly been produced with serious thought, care, and consideration.

Each release and every story and disc comes with both German and English audio as well as both German and English subtitles. Most releases including something special or unique. In the case of the complete 7tj doctor collection this comes in the form of a dvd release of the VHS extended edition of Silver Nemesis. Carefully and painstaking produced and newly edited by the German publishers as an exact replication of the original VHS release. In my opinion the correct and definitive version of silver Nemesis.

Don’t hesitate ….go and get these releases while you can. The Limited editions are just that….LIMITED AND COLLECTABLE. All of which are numbered. In the case of the Special Limited edition collectors mediabooks; the mediabooks are limited to either 1500 or 2000 copies. If like me you want the complete special l/e collections (in a slightly larger box set) which include the extras that include the aforementioned lenticular and autographed art cards, then be warned…. These are limited to 333 numbered copies each. True collectors items as well as truly definitive and exceptional collections.

Why do they never do UK versions. US for Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi both US only. Now Sylvester McCoy German. The only one which was was the first. The David Tennant collection. Limiting the audience to certain countries where as the could make more money by doing it for all.

I see Blu-Ray as a cash-grab & no point of spending a ton just to get the same thing on a different format.

The Blu-rays aren’t a cashgrab. The “same thing” has all been updated for these releases and include new content worth picking it up for.

      All the same but:

      1. New and better encodes
      2. A lot more disc space
      3. New restorations
      4. Footage in Hd footage where available
      5. Hd sound
      6. 5.1 mixes
      7. New alternative effects
      8. 10-30 hours of new and never released material per season
      9. Thousands of pages of PDFs
      8. New Gorgeous packaging

Oh wait it really isn’t the same then.

I can fully understand why some people would find their existing Doctor Who DVD collection quite sufficient, particularly if they only really want the episodes. However, there’s enough effort gone into making the Blu-ray releases something really quite special to justify buying them again.

But you know, it’s just a fancy upgrade of the same thing. You know. If you can’t get your hands on the Limited Collection boxsets. The DVDs will always be there, or if you just want to watch the episodes and don’t care for special features (unlike me, the only reason I buy these sets are the new features). Also you won’t really notice any picture upgrade if you’re a causal fan. And also some are out of print so.

I have a question, has anyone purchased and viewed these DVD’s? What is the quality of the video and audio? Are all of titles on the book and the book itself in German? That is what it looks like.

I Ordered a copy as I have always been a fan of the McCoy era of the show anyway, however having gone through a troubling period of being bullied non stop for 4 years of my life, all i ahd to keep me going was that every so often, if my mum had the money, we would buy one of thr VHS versions of one of the 7th Doctor’s adventures (and only one of them i owned did not feature Ace). I think that alot of Doctor Who fans do get the raw deal with sets like this and the US’s Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi ‘Complete Era’ boxsets as this is a show made in the UK, we should get a chance to be offered if not the same layout, at least the same opportunity to by a complete era of a doctor’s if we find the the overall box set cost is too much.

Who would pay that much to see the slow demise of Classic Who? There’s about four great stories in the Seventh Doctor’s run – Remembrance of the Daleks, Battlefield, The Curse of Fenric and Survival.

Someone who likes the 7th Doctor TV era. Like me (although I’m not buying it because Big Finish exists and costs a lot of money).
I don’t see it as the demise of classic who you see. For me that’s season 22, then Trial of a Time Lord was a mess as they tried to get rid of it, followed by season 24 which was mostly awful. Then I see seasons 25 and 26 as a fresh and promising continuation of classic who, that got cut when it was doing great.
The Happiness Patrol and The Greatest Show in the Galaxy are so good.

At a limited run of 1000, and with the time and effort taken to produce the DVD of the “new restoration of the extended version of silver nemesis” ; I am fairly certain there will be (at some point in the future) a uk DVD release of or including this. With the latest increase in interest in releasing new classic series DVDs a uk release is a no brainier commercially as the work producing it has been done (bar DVD sleeve design). So with minimal additional costs v the potential sales ; for BBC worldwide this at some point is must. Potentially the inclusion of 1.the new Andrew cartnell interview and 2. The Doctors revisited – the 7th Doctor having already been produced as a disc makes for a decent package already. Whether personally desirable or not a 2 disc set including the original DVD package in total makes for a nice 2 disc special edition without any further work for BBC. This is in keeping with other releases in the range.
I really can’t believe for the minimal work and effort required this is not a DVD the BBC aren’t at least considering releasing. In comparison a hudge amount of work has gone into the shada and enemy releases, and within the wider public market a relatively recent B&W 2nd doctor special edition is no more or less popular or marketable than a 7th doctor Cyberman special edition (silver nemesis original DVD having been released 8 years ago ) (Cyberman being key features of the conclusion of the last series).
Well I know everyone will have their own opinion which I am completely open to but…I would definatly buy it and in all honesty it has been one of the DVDs I felt was “missing” from the range after Curse and Battlefield both got 2 disc extended editions included releases. As I also agree The Crusade and The Curse of Fatal death should be released and are “missing” from the range.

I can’t understand why it’s so Limited? It has a new Restoration of the ‘lost’ Extended Version of Silver Nemesis. It’s not exactly ‘lost’ but has only been available on VHS before, until this new DVD release. This mean’s at a 1,000 copies a lot of fans will miss out on this (Plus the price)

Happiness Patrol = The Power of Happiness
Greatest Show = The Death Circus (ring) on Segonax
Ghost Light = The House of a Thousand Scares
Curse of Fenric = Death Bay of the Vikings
Survival = Death on Silent Footsteps
