Its that time of year again with SDCC 2016 about to start

Wednesday saw previews night between 6-9 pm, that’s 2-5am in the morning for people in the UK.

From what we can see nothing new was on show.

It starts on Thursday at 9.30am which is 5.30pm in the UK so no late night waiting for any information.

If anything is on show it should soon become clear.

The only Doctor Who items we know of so far are the 2 Titans, Ghost 12th Doctor and Glitter Tardis, Titan Comics, an electronic 20 questions Tardis, 5.5 “x 7” giant mug and Rory’s Story Cubes.

This year we have noticed the “exclusive” title has been dropped in many cases and replaced with “first to market” which means it is only sold there first.

I suspect all eyes (where Doctor Who is concerned) will be on the Underground Toys Stand where, assuming its on show, something “big” is coming (and no its not the mug)…

You’d have thought that Character options and Underground Toys would have been making an effort to promote this set but obviously they haven’t. It’s been done in such a way that they don’t seem to be worried about people in the UK missing out on it when the majority of fans live where the show originated from in the first place.

its the way they work, it seems to be selling fine in the states without even as much as official blurb or images they have never been in the habit of pre announcing sets and figures for ages

I still think the 12th Doctor and the 8th Doctor are a little taller than the rest of the set. I contacted CO and UT and they both said they did not change the scale, but I don’t buy it. I did however buy this set for $125 from Whona. It’s a bargain if you think about it. Only $10 a character. A friend thinks I shouldn’t open it, but I can’t resist. All my other figures are open.

I might just buy some of the figures in this set separately on eBay as this set is quite pricey, I’m also getting annoyed now on how America has all the information and they don’t even own the show! however in England we have had nothing! if anyone has any information PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!! let me know I’ve never been more excited for a doctor who figure set

I really wish people would stop saying How it’s not fair America has all the info and they don’t even own the show!! It makes us Anerican fans feel kinda bad. Doctor who is now WORLDWIDE. It wouldn’t be as successful as it is if it wasn’t for the different countries including the US. There are items made from American Tv shows that u can only get in other countries like the UK. Should I be angry that I can’t get them. That’s not fair.. It’s a United States show. Doctor Who is for everyone. I can understand being upset that there is no info on certain items and you can’t get certain items but to me We all own Doctor Who no matter what country we are in.
I’m not trying to pick a fight. Sorry if it came off that way. You can yell at me if you’d like. Lol

agreed its worldwide but the UK still has by the biggest fan base and viewing figures and we also pay a licence fee to watch this stuff and to contribute towards its production costs

It nothing to do with Americans, just the way the distribution works in their favour now

this is big set and I really can understand the frustration of UK buyers seeing it on sale and in stock in the USA when these is no info whatsoever here, its not as if we can even pre -order it

I dont just run this site we are collectors to and i totally get where people are coming from

I have always said i believe in a level playing field for everyone and its just not like that now.

also its far easier to get stuff from the UK to the USA as you dont get walloped for import tax and costs like we do, in fact you actually get 20% off the price with many sites

I mean just look at us, we get 1000,s of visitors a day here, 75% from the UK and we cant tell tell any of them anything about the UK availability or price of this set

    • Doctor_Number 10

      August 1st, 2016 - 11:01pm

Few things I would like to point out about this set
      1) The 8th Doctor has a lot of blood on his face or at least mine does
      2) The 6th Doctor on the box flap says this outfit (blue version) is from Real Time BUT it does give a shout on to Big Finish and also saying this outfit appeared on several offical cover arts.
      3) The 12th Doctor on the box flap say this outfit is from Deep Breath which to a true hearted Whovian is wrong. The figure has a black shirt not white which is what he did wear in Deep Breath plus no wait coat also seen in the episode.
      4) The 3rd Doctor on his jacket the design on the front is pin apps.
      5) Few on the sonic screwdrivers are flipped upside down. This includes the War Doctor, 9th and 10th Doctor.
      6) 1st and 2nd Doctor don’t have any accessories.
      7) The 11th Doctor’s Sonic is extended while the 12th Doctor’s Sonic is closed as to be expected.
      8) On the back of the box it does say Character and Underground Toys.

      August 1st, 2016 - 11:15pm

      10th Doctor:
-White under shirt which is new because before this it was a light blue.
      – His shoes are dirty
      – His suit is brown with blue pin stripes.
      – His tie is solid dark red.

      War Doctor:
      – His jacket is a real dark brown and so are his pants.
      – His jacket is almost a solid color unlike the original were it had tons of light brown mixed in.
      – His waist coat is a darker olive green color and has a mixure of black-ish brown spots mixed in unlike the original being a brighter olive green.
      – The lines in the scarf are so much more detailed than the original.

This has been my issue with Character of late, leaving loyal collectors to hang on to any trickle of news without any form of official confirmation, when a greater amount of promotion and detail is just what the company needs right now to maximise sales of the releases we are getting. Other than Stetson 11 and Rose/K9, the other four ‘Collector Series’ re-releases never surfaced in the UK, and no official confirmation was given so it was a case of guess work if you forked out a greater price for an import, just in case they never came to the UK. Thank goodness I bought as soon as they appeared, because nothing official has been said about them since. I feel this is a similar situation, with no official channel saying anything of substance, speculation from fans has gone into overdrive about what is (admitedly) one of the most highly anticipated releases in years. I am terrified that this may end up being the first gap in my collection in a long, long time that I may not be able to pick up at a later date like I have done in the past due to how the few outlets that have recieved them, have received few and pretty much no UK market (minus eBay) seems to have acknowledged its existence. Apologies for the doom and gloom, I just hope we get something official sometime soon (preferably a Forbidden Planet pre-order) with enough stock to satisfy the many of us who are bowled over by this set and are on tender hooks if we can get hold of one or not.

i think one of the problems is there are many parties involved and PR only comes when the stuff is heading for or on the shelves for certain parties.

It was probably down to toys r us for example, not character that those other 5.5″ never made it to the UK

UT are only able to promote the USA side of things, which they are now on twitter and facebook.

They have never been in the habit of talking about advanced plans

Social media is a very good and free form of advertising but you have to do it right.

In the past some people have tried but when things haven’t worked out they just had loads of abuse thrown at them.

You just have to know what you are doing.

But i know what you mean, I do despair at some of the things I see, some of them happening right now

I am annoyed we STILL here in the UK never got the accurate 5″ Dalek sec. Its advertised on the back of K9 &Rose “Other figures available” > When I asked CO about this I was told it was a Wall Greens (US) exclusive last year.

I don’t know how to feel about this set. Whilst I’m glad that we got anything at all, I feel kind of miffed that they didn’t improve certain figures. The main problems I have are with the later Doctors, I feel they could have put more money into them and less into the more classic Doctors.. I’m not talking crazy changes to the existing sculpts either, for example-

8th – Better, more accurate cuts/damage. (I know this figure does have this but from the pictures so far, It looks pretty bad… I’d have preferred the cuts to be more like EOT 10th)

War – OK.. would have liked a new, younger head but isn’t 100% needed.

9th – Original sculpt is pretty much perfect, could add the updated articulation but again, not essential.

10th – UPDATED ARTICULATION AND SCULPT. I feel that this figure is a serious joke now, this is one of the most popular Doctors! his figure is a Joke and really deserves a better figure! They could literally just use the 3.75 scan for the 10th Doctor figure and up scale it! SO FRUSTRATED WITH THIS!

11th – The green coat look for the Doctor could have been achieved using the new 8th Doctor’s arms and maybe a retooled version of Jack’s coat..?

12th – Hooded version / Red coat version / Cardigan version / Hell Bent Version (Just anything with a better head sculpt really…)

I know that I’ve mentioned a lot of retooling but surly you have to be willing to spent money in order to make it? Even if it meant there being slightly fewer sets made at a higher price.. I think that the new figures would have improved this set a million times over…
I really hope that we will see a couple of single releases in the Collectors Series and whilst I really want to see new series 9 figures, there could also be the potential for older characters getting updated or new figures! I know I am expecting way too much but I just feel some of these updates could be achieved.

      July 31st, 2016 - 10:07pm

Yeah but what I’m saying is that for the price and quality, I can’t help but feel that we could be a little ripped off, especially when it comes to 10… his articulation is awful compared to every other figure.

    • booboo

      August 1st, 2016 - 7:34am

10 would require completely new tooling so the only way that would happen is a separate £15 figure, and i dont see it happing at all, they would never sell enough.

The only reason these sets are the price they are is that the figures in them have already “made their money” to a certain extent.

There is clearly a very limited market for these figures now and any new investment, if any, should be put into new figures

I think people are converting the price from the RRP listed on various US and AUS websites to get an idea of how much they think it’s going to cost in the UK. To be honest I’m not too bothered about how much it’s going to cost over here I’m just hoping I’m going to be able to buy it and that it’s listed FPI not TRU after all the hassle I’ve had with their online shop in the past with the Doctor/Dalek two packs. Obviously I hope it’s going to be a reasonable price but to be honest despite how much it’s going to cost it’s still a win win sutuation for us because we’re getting 13 new brilliant variants and if it’s true about it being limited then there’s a likelyhood that it will sell out meaning we will hopefully get more new figures.

I would of had for the 6 Doctor his costume from Trial, red and white checkered waistcoat and teddy bear buttons on it which could of been painted on.
7 from Curse with his duffel coat, 8, War and 9 are OK, maybe 9 could of been a hologram.
10, why not use the same sculpt as the previous 11 Doctors set. 11 fine except for the head, should of used the series 6 or 7 sculpt. 12, well would of liked to see him in the Heaven sent costume. These are just my thoughts.

Extremely happy that the 10th Doctor has gone back to the old sculpt. The newer one looked NOTHING like Tennant, with its weird jutting jaw and the eyes that were far too close together. It’s nothing short of a relief that they’re going back to using the old one here.

  • Stewart Kennedy

    July 30th, 2016 - 12:46am

Anyone else feel like they’ve made a bit of a mistake with this set? There’s a lot of new stuff in here that I’m absolutely thrilled about but at the same time I am very annoyed that they made some rather silly decisions. This set should have had a lot more new/exclusivity to it. Personally if I had been in charge of this set I would have done it like this.

First quick ones out of the way, Doctors 1, 2, 3, and 4 can stay as is. They’re excellent new repaints and there really isn’t much left you can do with Tom’s outfit that we don’t already have. Five really didn’t change up his style too much, leave him as is here as well.

As much as I love this blue variant for 6, we already have a blue one from Real Time it should instead be his costume from the Stage Play or even better, remove his over coat and resculpt/repaint his torso to match his appearance in The Two Doctors, which would make sense as they’ve made 2 look like how he was in that Story.

This 7 should have come with a the plan head sculpt, but redone to have his hat as well. I love his hat but it annoys me you can only get it on his smiling head. Also, seeing how they’re giving 7 his screwdriver, they should have rescupted one of his hands to be able to hold it. But ultimately Seven didn’t use a screwdriver until the end of his life, this one should have been completely redone to match his costume and appearance in the TV movie. This would have been an instant deal for me.

8 should have been his Dark Eyes costume and screwdriver. They already have a head for it, why not finish the damn thing. There is no excuse. I don’t mind that costume for 8 but I really don’t like how it this is his go to look now. I much prefer his original velvet coat or dark eyes look and it would make this set so much better to have something properly new.

The War Doctor should be on a re-scaled 8th Doctor Night of The Doctor body/costume to match John Hurts height, along with a young War Doctor head. Through in the bandolier and it would be perfect.

There isn’t really much you could do for 9. The biggest thing they could do is to modernize his articulation. Same thing goes for 10. Give them ball jointed shoulders and thigh/bicep swivel cuts and send them out.

As for We’ve seen this one before more or less. This should have been his long green coat from Series 7b. The fact that they’ve also used the first version with the first release head/hair sculpt, badly posed screwdriver hand and inferior articulation makes this one a very big let down.

Lastly, 12 needs to be rescaled, he is far too big in comparison to the rest of them (same issue with NoTD 8th Doctor body). If they are going to give us his blue coat again, they could have at least added his waist coat/cardigan or completely redone his jacket to be buttoned at the top and folded back at the bottom to reveal the red lining. Better yet, this should have been his red velvet look from series 9 along with the new blue screwdriver.

All in all, it’s not a bad looking set, I will getting it and replacing my current 3rd, 4th and War Doctors with these new ones, but I’m still not very happy with the choices they’ve made for the rest.

I think many would agree with some of your choices but its clear to me this set only got of the ground because its uses exciting tooling, any new tooling would have added greatly to the cost and i already think its expensive for re-paints.

this is still only £8 a figure so i dont see them giving you a dark eyes 8th for £8 for example when they could easily get £15 as a separate figure to recover some of the huge tooling costs involved

if we ever get any figures again that require new tooling i thing they will be reserved for individual figures or smaller sets.

      July 30th, 2016 - 9:25am

Looks to me like they are trying get value from their license while they still have it, maximum profit / minimum investment.

This is what any business would do.

Would also explain why they bought the high selling sonic out early this year.

If there are no new figures at all this year then I think the future is uncertain.

    • Mad Psientist

      July 31st, 2016 - 3:48pm

It’s a straight repaint set, remodelling and new tooling for any of the figures would probably have made the cost of producing the set prohibitively expensive, so that I can understand. What I can’t understand is why they couldn’t use the tie – less shirt piece for the 3rd Doctor figure. That would just have needed the Pertwee head on the 4th Doctor regeneration figure’s body, surely?

I also think it’s a particularly bland and uninspired choice for the 12th Doctor figure. If it’s repaints that are the main draw of this set then I’d have preferred it if they’d have done the burgundy shirt 12 in a more screen – accurate colour or the polka dot 12 with the polka dots done smaller.

I personally don’t care for the Dark Eyes 8th costume, I think it’s too derivative of Eccleston’s look and takes away from his uniqueness. I didn’t have a problem with the TVM costume but Paul clearly didn’t care for it, he had no input on it and the NOTD costume “respects” the original design whilst giving him a more individual, Doctor – y look, as opposed to “third bloke on the left in a Dickens adaptation” which the original could seem like at times.

Apparently the costume designer’s brief was to make it reminiscent of the 1sst Doctor’s look, so I like that the NOTD costume is more relevant to Paul’s Doctor and it’s his preferred look now. I just wish they’d gone with a few tweaks to the colours rather than the “battle – damaged” look, given how much difficulty some fans have had in obtaining the original release of the figure.

9 has bicep swivel joints and 11s green coat is from series 6 let’s kill Hitler to wedding of river song not series 7b he wore a purple coat then

      July 31st, 2016 - 8:26pm

They were aware that 9 has swivel joints but they were talking about both 9 and 10 as a collective, so obviously 9 has bicep swivel but 10 doesn’t. As for the 11th Doctor, I think that was a genuine typo and they just meant 6B

I would love a Frontier in Space collectors set with: Draconion, The Master, Ogron and new 3rd doctor new sculpt.

And I agree with this Doctor set. Its ridiculous that the US buyers have more info on its wherabouts. Doctor Who is a British brand for goodness sake.

Hope we get more information on this set soon as I’d really like to buy it. Looks like another announcement is coming soon then, hopefully it’ll be collector’s series wave 2.

FP planet last year didn’t put most of the 5.5″ stuff up for order until it was actually in stock, this was a change from previous years when sets sometimes had a 2-3 month pre order date

If these were all shipped to the USA and then they have to shipped to the UK from their it could be a while, on the other had they could already be here

    • GenesisFan1975

      July 29th, 2016 - 1:26pm

I’m hoping they are already here because then we don’t have a long period of time waiting for them to be released and there being no danger of them being delayed like what’s hallened in the past when figures have been put up for pre-order. Another thing I shoul mention is that I used to be WouldYouLikeAJellyBaby? but I have now changed my name.

there is a lot of conflicting info around right now, and the situation even at this point seems “fluid”

I’m not banking on anything now until it actually goes up for order somewhere

I also think the price is going to be quite high now

Yep. The original invidual release figures were as well. Paul’s not much much taller than Sylvester in real life. I don’t know how tall Peter is but his figure looks taller than David’s which I’m pretty sure is inaccurate.

Putting them altogether in a display box just emphasizes how out of scale the Affable figures are with the previous releases, unfortunately.

    • DoctorSong2016

      July 27th, 2016 - 3:33pm

Yeah, the tallest should be Jon and Tom, closely followed by David. Peter is taller than Matt but smaller than David, I don’t think it helps that the David figure is already smaller than he should be.

It would require a new sculpt and tooling which is very expensive.

    • Phil

      July 27th, 2016 - 5:18pm

You can actually purchase two tenth doctors and hack up the arms to modify one and have what you want. You will be stuck with an armless extra though. Cut the arms bellow the shoulder on one set, then drill in a quarter inch. Then slice out around the inside of the hole using a tool that looks like a mini icecream scoop from a sculpting set at your local art store. Then take the second set of arms and an exacto knife, you can place the arm in super hot water to soften it, then slice down the shoulder to form a post.(go slow so it fits well)

    • Stewart Kennedy

      July 30th, 2016 - 1:35am

You’d also have to do the same with 9 and 10s legs. But that doesn’t solve the inferior shoulder joints. If they could update the 11th Doctor to ball joints way back when they should have done the same for 9 and 10. Should have done the same for all of them come to think of it.
