New and Classic Series Doctor Who from Big Finish

Big Finish announces a new range of boxsets, featuring heroes and monsters from the New Series of Doctor Who.

Doom Coalition 2

Leading this new wave of adventures is Alex Kingston as River Song, the beloved Time Lord archaeologist who first appeared in 2008’s Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead.

River will be stepping into the era of the Eighth Doctor (Paul McGann) for Doctor Who: Doom Coalition 2, alongside Liv Chenka (Nicola Walker) and Helen Sinclair (Hattie Morahan). But how can River help her husband if, in this incarnation, she must never actually meet him?

“The idea of River meeting previous Doctors was actually proposed by Steven Moffat,” says producer David Richardson, “and it’s just irresistible, isn’t it? Alex embraced the idea of returning to the role, and so she will be starring in no less than two box sets next year. And yes, we are still pinching ourselves!”

River will then return later in 2016 in Doctor Who: The Diary of River Song, an epic four-hour adventure that takes River across space and time, seeking out the secret rulers of the universe. Paul McGann will reprise the role of the Eighth Doctor in the final instalment.

Doctor Who: The Churchill Years

The New Series adventures will continue in Doctor Who: The Churchill Years, in which Ian McNeice returns as the indomitable Winston Churchill. In the four-hour saga, Winston relates a number of encounters with the Ninth, Tenth and Eleventh Doctors in his memoirs, battling alien incursions, metamorphosing creatures… and a Dalek! The stories are told by Ian McNeice, supported by a full cast of guest actors, including Danny Horn as Kazran Sardick, in a story taking place within the 2010 special A Christmas Carol.

“Ian has played Churchill in just four episode on TV, and yet it feels like it was many more,” says executive producer Nicholas Briggs. “It was such a brilliant, definitive performance, and how wonderful that we will be continuing Churchill’s adventures with the Doctor on audio.”

Doctor Who: Classic Doctors, New Monsters

Finally, the Fifth, Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Doctors will face a new generation of monsters in Doctor Who: Classic Doctors, New Monsters, a brand new, four-story run featuring creatures from the New Series. Peter Davison takes on the Weeping Angels, Colin Baker encounters the Judoon, Sylvester McCoy will meet the Sycorax… and Paul McGann will face a new clone batch of Sontarans on the edge of the Time War….

“It’s the ultimate mash-up,” says executive producer Jason Haigh-Ellery, “and we have some great scripts lined up for these landmark stories. There is no doubt that 2016 is going to be a brilliant year for Big Finish!”

All four boxsets will be released across 2016, and are available to pre-order today from the Big Finish website. Doctor Who: Doom Coalition 2 will be released in February, and is available as part of a special bundle of all four Doom Coalition boxsets.

A clear choice for the next included ‘monster’ would be the vashta nerada(narada?), as the Doctor was familiar with them already when they showed up in Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead

Yeah, Imagine the 4th doctor facing off against them (cause he wasn’t included in this pack) or perhaps the 1st doctor (it kind of fits the style of his villains).

Since 8th Doctor Adventures audios with Lucie (that’s when, in my opinion, it started) then Dark Eyes then Night of the Doctor, Big Finish, with a little help from the BBC, are slowly blurring the lines between classic and new who, as well as between TV canon and Big Finish canon. Brilliant work! I am overjoyed at the news!

Didn’t Christopher Eccleston say that he had nothing against the character or the show, and that he just fell out with some people at the BBC? Obviously it’s his decision whether he wants to get involved, but I would love him to join Big Finish’s classic Doctors – he seems like he would fit right in with the classic Doctors and the audio format, in a way that David Tennant and Matt Smith wouldn’t.

But the BBC would never in a million years let Big Finish use the current Doctor!!!!

That very much depends on the showrunner at the time. Steven Moffat doesn’t have a problem with them, but who knows what his successor will think, or their successor, or the successor after them.

I still find it quite difficult bridging the gap (mentally) between the classic series and new. Big Finish’s grander, glossier adventures have done an admirable job thus far, but I think the most exciting thing about these releases is making the whole Doctor Who universe feel so much more cohesive.

Oh, who am I kidding? It’s just really, really exciting!

Agreed. I think this has probably all came about from the popularity of The Night of the Doctor which for me was some of the best 8 minutes of Doctor Who TV and did so much to bridge the gap between classic and new Who. As the 8th Doctor is the “current” Doctor in the BF audio world, the next logical step was to bring elements of ‘new’ Who into an 8th Doctor story but I never thought the BBC would allow it…it seems Moffatt has been instrumental in making this happen.

Who knows, maybe the next step is a multi doctor story in series 9 to celebrate 10 years of new who featuring 8 and 12…for me, the show could end there and I’d die a happy man 🙂

Didn’t the 11th Doctor say he’d only met them once before (Blink), therefore meaning he’s never faced them in a previous incarnation before Blink?

Have a close look at the Churchill cover, they have the rights to the Ninth, Tenth and Eleventh Doctors at the very least.

      June 28th, 2015 - 3:01am

I would say the ninth doctor is the least likely, at least until eccleston’s career is closer to an end. Who knows about the others though, eh? Who knows.

    • booboo

      June 28th, 2015 - 9:29am

yes, far to many people are assuming that if they do have the rights to “new who” that all the actors concerned would actually want to do it, at least at the moment.

      Time will tell

All I will say is look at Tom Baker, they had the rights to his era but it took over a decade to get him on board.

Do you know for sure that their licence actually covers them being able to use the Doctors (as in actual actors) themselves rather than just references as these stories announced are?

Has anyone actually asked big finish ?

      June 28th, 2015 - 7:13pm

There’s a picture of Christopher Eccelston, David Tennant and Matt Smith on the cover of the Churchill CD. I think that very firmly confirms they have the rights to those Doctors as well as their stories (doesn’t mean they’ll get the actors but they can use modern Doctors).

Sounds awesome. One question though where is the main enemy of Doom Coalition the Eleven? Mark Bonnar is not even credited and the picture of Liv looks awful.

Either way all we need not to Chris Eccleston, David Tennant, Matt Smith, Capaldi and Hurt to sign on.

The River Song and Winston Churchill diaries looks fab and so does the classic Doctors, New Monsters set.

2016 is going to be a big year for Big Finish

    One question:
How is a Weeping Angel going to work in Big Finish? They don’t say anything. They’ll probably have to keep mentioning that they’re there.

Weeping Angels, in the showx have a specific sting/clash thing to show they have moved. No doubt they’ll use that in some way.

Definitely getting Diary of River Song, Doom Coalition 2 (as I have been following Dark Eyes) and probably also the Classic Doctors, New Monsters set….

Will most definitely get The Churchill Years and Old Doctors, New Monsters. And Doom Coalition 2. However, will probably pass The Diary of River Song. As her character has been run into the ground. Now, I think DC2 will be interesting to see her react with 8, and it adds context to her knowing many of his faces, but otherwise I think her involvement is a bit… Well… Off.

She’ll be reacting to 8, but not with him. The first time the Doctor met her was in the Library, she’ll be involved with the story but unable to actually meet him. The story’s synopsis suggests this is actually a big part of the plot, that she is involved but cannot actually meet him because she’s too early in his time stream for her to interact without causing problems, which in itself is a rather interesting dynamic.

Love what Big Finish are doing here: Expanding on TV stories by showing the unseen adventures (for example Churchill had obviously met the doctor(s) before), it may even make the TV story a little better or might make you watch it differently (Victory of the Daleks). I’m really excited to buy these, excellent cover and I’m also really happy for the actors as both Alex Kingston and Ian McNeice looked like they had a lot of fun on Doctor Who and probably won’t be back on TV so its good they get to carry on here.
