Toy Fair London 2016 Round-up – Update from Character

There were no new Doctor Who products on display at the Toy Fair this year at the Character Options stand but more are on their way, below are direct responses from Character Options:

Why is there no new Doctor Who range on the Character Options stand?
The DW collection of Character Options toys will be out at a later date and press materials will be circulated then.

When will the new Doctor Who Sonic Screwdriver be released?
The new Sonic is set to be released for this summer, and viewings are being carried out in due course

I was fully expecting 3.75″ Davros, supreme Dalek and Missy, I miss the 5″ days where we used to get basically three figures per episode of a series including Christmas special and now we’re lucky to get three figures per series

      January 26th, 2016 - 9:35pm

yeah it’s an educated guess but the original statement was
“Six inch articulated figures with the first characters in the line being Ghostbusters, Back to the future, TMNT, Doctor Who, Sherlock, The Walking Dead, Supernatural and Willy Wonka”

then they released pictures of these http://funkopopcommunityuk.co.uk/other-funko-goodies-leaked-fabrikations-dorbz-playmobil-mymoji-more/

you’ll notice the only ones missing from the list are the bbc properties doctor who and sherlock

its not official but it looks likely

I thought I read somewhere May but that might have completely changed, if it was i would have thought it would have been there

      Sonics are massive sellers

    • The Twelfth Doctor

      January 24th, 2016 - 8:46pm

Yeah. It would have been awesome if, like the Eleventh Doctor’s sonic, it went up for sale on the day it debuted in the show (5th December), but I guess that wouldn’t happen now due to approval reasons and the like.

    • booboo

      January 24th, 2016 - 8:49pm

we have seen very little of the new sonic

one wonders if Character can even market a toy that may have features we have yet to see on screen

wouldn’t that class as a spoiler

    • Anonymous

      January 24th, 2016 - 8:54pm

i just think its not ready yet.

    • booboo

      January 24th, 2016 - 8:59pm

or they pulled the plug last minuet in light of the series news

high street retailers maybe reluctant to buy stuff if the show is not going to aired at all this year until xmas

    • Anonymous

      January 24th, 2016 - 9:04pm

well they’ve got to release someting……next years toy fair wont have any new doctor who stuff either i imagine.

    • booboo

      January 24th, 2016 - 9:07pm

if it does it maybe from episodes that haven’t aired yet so it won t be on public show, that’s how it always was for the 1st few years

in a way this probably works in Characters favour as they have more time to get stuff ready and it can be put to market not long after the episodes have aired

    • The Twelfth Doctor

      January 24th, 2016 - 9:36pm

Yeah, wouldn’t surprise me if it was released in the last 1/4 of the year, we all know how much retailers love Christmas…

      It’s gonna be a long wait…..

    • The Legend Doctor

      January 25th, 2016 - 12:09am

Hmmm this is a bit strange as BBC’s Official Sonic Screwdriver app has the new sonic screwdriver and it has Green Mode and Blue Mode. Click and it will buzz the normal Smith sound slide up to have one of the sounds from the clockwork trans tempral sonic! 🙂 then slide down slightly to have another version of the matt smith sonic sound then slide fully down for another sound from the clockwork sonic 🙂 So presumably those sounds will be on Characters sonic! 😀

I was a bit disappointed that there was nothing on display, but it’s not too surprising really. 11 years is a long time for a brand. CO seemed to be saying that the brand wasn’t finished, however.

my guess is if the 5.5″ are continuing and possibly even the 3.75″ they will remain exclusives for now

I suspect any new sonic had not got past the approval stage for public display, there is little else CO can do at the moment

Titans and Funkos seem to have a strong global market right now

    • BrunoB

      January 25th, 2016 - 6:17am

Oh, I asked them and they did say the brand wasn’t dead. But compared with previous years, Doctor Who was very much absent from the Toy Fair… even Funko/Underground didn’t have much to show this year. They weren’t even showing the new Pops!

My guess is these are toys r us exclusives again which is why they weren’t on display

      January 24th, 2016 - 8:03pm

When you realise the ‘exclusive Collector series’ is sold in more shops than the ‘mass market’ 3.75 inch Wave 4, and possibly 5 depending on how they distribute them..
Like genuinely, the 3.75 inch range was marketed at mass market, so why are they becoming exclusive, it’s slightly worrying from a business point of view tbh. Us 5 inch fans technically need to 3.75 inch line to survive to get any 5 inch range figures, the 5 inch range alone will not be enough to sustain enough money, as we already know. I want to see both lines be as good as possible!

    • booboo

      January 24th, 2016 - 8:09pm

we don’t know what happens behind closed doors, it may well that to commit to the 5.5″ line Toys r us wanted the 3.75″ line as exclusives as well

I would not be surprised if wave 5 didn’t just turn up there

the right figures do sell, The 8th doctor proves that, however I’m not sure how viable one off new figures are without re-releases which i have no doubt are off setting some of the costs

I imagine thinfs will chill, with no Doctor whoctill Xmas 2016. There are a few books coming with a capaldi flavour. Underground might dabble in some classic series figures, while the current team have a quieter time, not quiet, but quieter

    • booboo

      January 24th, 2016 - 8:22pm

Lego could still be working on more, i just preferred the CB minifigures myself, wave 5 was done as well, Shame UT couldn’t have taken that up possibly

will def get Sherlock, we have virtually everything else

The Lego set however is very well thought out and a quality item
