Figurine Collection Magazine Issue 154 Broton Zygon

The Doctor Who Figurines Collection part 154 features Broton the Zygon warlord from the 1975 Fourth Doctor adventure ‘Terror of the Zygons’.

The Doctor, Sarah and Harry return to Earth in response to the Brigadier’s summons. UNIT are investigating a series of attacks on North Sea oil rigs.

The attacks are the work of a huge cyborg, the Skarasen, controlled by a group of aliens called Zygons whose spaceship lies at the bottom of Loch Ness.

Yes, but used in TV series. It’s a specific dalek from planet of the daleks, not a generic dalek from Cushing’s movies. Two different copyrights

But it was based on an on screen design, they can’t just make a movie Dalek without permission.

      May 14th, 2019 - 3:35pm

It’s interesting there’s not been anything (bar the subscriber special Dalek) from The Five Doctors yet, which is odd seeing as it’s such an important story with lots of potential…maybe they’re saving up for a screen replica Figurine set towards the end or something as you say?

    • Michael Pearson

      May 14th, 2019 - 6:26pm

A Raston would be nice at least.

    • NEIL CORRY

      May 15th, 2019 - 12:20pm

To Dav, a Game of Rassilon set has been on our minds for some time, but we think that the logistics of doing the set, not to mention the expense (and whether the figurines should look like those in the game or more like the figurines in the collection) makes it just too difficult. We never say never, however.

And to Dr 1313: I’m not ignoring you. I just don’t have the answer… yet. And less of the “they should”, please. We are trying our utmost to include everything we can. Reminder: there will be disappointments as it’s a partwork not an ongoing magazine.

    • Who rules

      May 15th, 2019 - 8:05pm

As often as I’ve said be grateful for what we get, many fans will still feel it’s their right to demand their own personal choices whether that be figures, books, CDs, dvd/bluray or the TV series itself. There are many fans who will be happy with the figures announced, CDs or DVDs released and as I was, with the ongoing TV series, trouble is a lot of others will stamp their feet and shout loudly (or should that be type aggressively?) when they don’t like what they see being released or made. Rather afraid there is no solution. But the consequences of such behaviour is that the press end up with nonsensical non-story stories about fans being up in arms about this that and t’other!

Why is this being welcomed by so many when it is indistinguishable from the previous zygon. There are so many characters not covered yet, why are they so intent on giving us every possible variation of previously issued characters.

The original zygon design is much nicer than the modern one which looks like an original zygon made of orange ice cream after a couple hours stood outside on a sunny day.

    • Neil

      May 14th, 2019 - 12:43am

This is a much better looking and better designed zygon that the modern one

    • Doug Who

      May 14th, 2019 - 1:00pm

Having the original (and usually better) designs is essential I think and Jim Acheson’s Zygon is a true classic and an iconic design. I hope there are many more to come from the ‘classic’ series. Even some of the less convincing realisations look really fantastic as models (such as the Mandrel) and I really hope the same can be done for the Nimon and Foamasi for example!

      A Pyrovile is rumoured.

    • Neil Corry

      May 15th, 2019 - 12:32pm

I’m sad to say that a Racnoss is very unlikely to happen. The legs would be, simply, too delicate. We have tried to find ways to work around this, but that always adds significantly to the price. It just doesn’t make sense for us. I’m sorry.

And the Vespiform was great but it’s just a giant wasp. So, that’s really unlikely again. Sorry.

      Pyrovile is definitely happening.

    • Anonymous

      May 15th, 2019 - 2:04pm

How about casting the Racnoss body+torso+head as one piece and then the legs separately. ‘Some assembly required’ for the customer.

Same principle as a model kit, with the fiddly pieces still attached to a plastic sprue. Perhaps including a spare set of legs just in case? Also a base to put the legs into to secure the positions relative to the body (and provide a bit of strength).

Sorry Neil, you’re being inundated with lots of ideas, wish lists, suggestions. It’s your own fault for producing a really popular partwork! 🙂

It’s just a big generic spider though, I’m sure there are plenty of those going cheap on Ebay etc you could pretend was from Metebelis 3. Same goes for wasps, dinosaurs, bluebottle flies etc or you could just whack and stuff one in your house (not a dinosaur obviously that would be hideous).

    • The ergon

Its not even the same. Generic? Those final scenes with the 3rd Doctor and the queen Spider are so memorable and on a different level to generic spiders ever seen in Who ,including the one attached to Sarah janes back. Anything you say fella. You might think so.

I’m hoping for The Toymaker, Bok, Mutt, Styggron, Eldrad, Fendahl core, Nimon, Aukon, Warriors Sea Devil, Tractator, Stealth Cyberman, Shockeye, Glass Dalek, The Rani, Kandyman, Roberts Master, Cyber Shade,The Flood, Snowman, and companion sets of Tegan and Peri. It would be awesome if they had the rights to big finish daleks and movie daleks. It would make the collection much more interesting and expand the opportunitys for special daleks. I think big finish have designed one of the more interesting daleks, the stained glass version as well as the time controller, although i feel that was a sort of remake especially after watching remembrance again. Dalek alpha would be another great one to add

    • booboo

      May 11th, 2019 - 8:56am

The films i think we could rule out for now, different license not even BBC so EM would probably have to make sure demand was there for the entire main cast list and Daleks to justify the cost.

I would be the first to sign up though

Not sure how BF would work as they are images rather than a physical item, might mean expensive negotiations with the artists if they own the rights etc.

Something BF and EM would need to do jointly perhaps, would be interesting to know the minimum number of sales required per figure to justify production.

    • Who rules

      May 11th, 2019 - 10:16am

The big finish copyrights could be complicated. A dalek for example is copyrighted first and foremost by the Terry nation estate. Then you might have nick Briggs say as the copyrighted creator of a specific big finish dalek. Then you have the cover artist who then designs the look of the dalek for the cover, probably from notes by the author and taking in the already copyrighted original design. Same applies to most of the big finish cover art, whether it ge a monster or a doctor/companion look.

Great to know those two are included in the license at least! I think a Krarg & Skagway would be my most wanted. Always thought villain/monster double packs would be cool…Greel & Sin or Styggron & Android or even the two Eldrads!
Really hoping it goes beyond 180 now…just a fabulous collection!

    • Who rules

      May 10th, 2019 - 5:53pm

Not really a hint, I think we can assume they have plans for beyond 180 but whether they have permission to continue will depend on licensing. They have to plan ahead for either outcome. If they don’t get the extension no harm done but if they do it means no break in production. Don’t assume they will continue (hopefully they will) licensing can be tricky.

    • booboo

      May 10th, 2019 - 6:02pm

i hope they will keep the license either way, there is still a, lot of millage in specials / megas and companion sets

If they are planning to put him out between Issues 155-180 suggests they are making sure the figurine is out there in case Eaglemoss don,t extend beyond that and will the Gooderson, Molloy and 2nd variant Bleach ever see light of day as far as a release is concerned. When would we get an announcement that Eaglemoss are planning to extend its publication?

    • booboo

      May 10th, 2019 - 9:32am

probably between 160-170, it will be down to subscriber numbers which guarantees sales i suspect

the other factor is they have to continue to do these for sunscribers at the same cost as 6 years ago which is something people rarely think about

Maybe both as a double pack? Although I think the female version is more likely if they only do one as she’s more iconic. And if there is a double pack, I’d rather her be with Sarah Jane in Andy Pandy outfit with the hand. I know there’s already a Sarah figure, but second variants don’t hurt, as all the Doctors have proved.
