Wave of Destruction Sainsbury’s Exclusive Vinyl LP

New Doctor Who vinyl out today!

Sainsbury’s brings the Fourth Doctor, Romana and K-9 to vinyl – and Big Finish is delighted to have another exclusive release out in Sainsbury’s today.

Hot off the press, Sainsbury’s has just launched Doctor Who: Wave of Destruction starring Tom Baker, Lalla Ward and John Leeson. It is a Limited Edition run of 1500 copies on ocean swirl vinyl – only available in Sainsbury’s stores across the UK.

In this full-cast audio drama from 2016, the Vardans return to take on Tom Baker’s Fourth Doctor. The Doctor had previously encountered the Vardans on Gallifrey, the Doctor’s home planet, in the 1978 television story, The Invasion of Time.

A modulated frequency wave cancellation signal isn’t something that the Doctor and Romana expect to detect in 1960s London. But then they don’t expect to find Professor Lanchester, the man who invented it, lying unconscious. Or MI5 investigating. With the help of MI5 Agent Miller; Lanchester’s daughter Jill; and his nephew – a pirate radio DJ called Mark; the Doctor, Romana and K-9 investigate. They soon discover that there is more at risk than they imagined, and an alien invasion is about to begin. Can the Doctor identify and defeat the aliens in time? Will Romana manage to find a recombinant transducer before it’s too late? And how will K-9 cope with his new job?

Tom Baker portrayed the Doctor on screen from 1974 until 1981 returning to star alongside Matt Smith, David Tennant and John Hurt as the curator in the 50th anniversary TV special, The Day of the Doctor, in 2013.

John Leeson was first brought in as the voice of K-9 – the Fourth Doctor’s robot dog – for the 1977 TV story, The Invisible Enemy. After a short break John returned for season 18 of Doctor Who in 1980. He also reprised his role as K-9 in the pilot TV episode for K-9 and Company (1981 – a spin-off from Doctor Who) and voiced K-9 for the 20th anniversary TV episode of Doctor Who, The Five Doctors and the 2006 Doctor Who TV episode, School Reunion.

Lalla Ward made her debut as Romana in December 1979, and after almost three series she made her last appearance alongside John Leeson in January 1981.

Of this special vinyl release, Lalla Ward said: “Recording Wave of Destruction was an absolute delight and I’m very pleased that we’ve made it onto a record. Romana is used to running circles around the Doctor so she’ll be right at home on the turntable.”

Wave of Destruction, written by Justin Richards, is the first story of the fifth series of The Fourth Doctor Adventures, produced by Big Finish Productions.

Big Finish Productions is a production company and publisher who produce audio CDs, downloads and books. Best known for its range of Doctor Who plays (with its many spin-offs), Big Finish also produces a wide range of audio drama and audiobooks featuring the characters from Blake’s 7, Dark Shadows, Captain Scarlet, Callan, The Avengers, The Prisoner, Survivors and The Omega Factor, as well as classics such as HG Wells, Shakespeare, Sherlock Holmes, The Phantom of the Opera and Dorian Gray. They also produce original creations such as Graceless, Charlotte Pollard and The Adventures of Bernice Summerfield, plus the Big Finish Originals range featuring seven great new series including ATA Girl, Cicero, Jeremiah Bourne in Time, Shilling & Sixpence Investigate and Blind Terror.

CDs and downloads are available from the Big Finish website www.bigfinish.com

Wave of Destruction succeeds with flying colours, offering laughs, thrills and in-jokes in equal succession. Justin Richards’ script sparkles throughout, and the cast is on top form, particularly Baker and Ward, who are once again at the height of their power. Starburst

Highly reminiscent of the Douglas Adams era of the show… a humorous, and often laugh out loud funny, uplifting ‘tribute’ to the sixties… Tom Baker and Lalla Ward are, as you’d expect, superb, falling into character with consummate ease… It’s a groovy tale that’s got the lot, adventure, excitement, monstrous moustache-twirling villains, a fast, ferociously paced, involving plot… Tim Mass Movement

Got to the first store I tried at 6:30am yesterday, their entertainment specialist spent ages looking for it before accepting it hadn’t arrived (so much for getting out of bed early). Couldn’t confirm when it would come in and wouldn’t reserve (first come first served doesn’t count if there’s been an issue with delivery, apparently). Checked three more stores before 8am – some showed stock but couldn’t find it. Several people have been looking for me and discovered ones that are not on the list had stock but have now sold out, while at least one of the superstores has admitted delivery has been ‘a disaster’ with very few stores getting what they were supposed to. An utter shambles with some very unhelpful staff – Sainsbury’s are fast becoming my least favourite store.
HMV meanwhile are letting you preorder the September release through their website!

Luckily managed to get my copy today at Leicester Fosse Park today. Weren’t on display so asked a member of staff to make sure, after 10 minutes he came back and had the LP record. So always good to make people double check as you never know. Overall, really happy and a lovely item. Price: £16

Cheshire oaks/Ellesmere port kinsey Road, had 4 at 9.45 (we were firt told yesterday these are out on Sat ???. took no notice, phoned to ask when they would be put out (10 am we were told) Got there 9.35–40, all on shelf now,3 as I got mine.

I wonder if they are staggering putting these out. But 6 in one store, lifted by one person, as mentioned below, is not really on. Max 2 per person, as you might be getting one for someone unable to get out/holiday etc. Seems fair to me. But scalpers will get them whatever one does.

I have a friend going to France for the New Kate Bush ltd 12“ single. Already 5 others have asked him to get one for them.

Managed to get a copy in Sainsbury’s Holywood Exchange, although they had lots of Zygon Hunt.

How sad the scalpers are at it already! Over 100% mark up and some have sold for £40 on eBay since first thing this morning.

I don’t think they’ll be feeling too sad if they make a tidy profit. If you don’t like it, you just have to get out of bed earlier and get down there before they do.

To be honest, I haven’t a prayer of getting to a big enough Sainsbury’s branch on a working Friday, so on this occasion I’m sort-of thankful for the e-bayers or I’d likely not get one at all. Or, in the case of Asda, for the last one, they have no stock and no knowledge of the release at all, despite being one of the branches that was listed as getting some stock. The HMV ones are the only ones I’ve always been lucky enough to buy from the retailer for just the RRP.

That’s a bit curt! Already been out and got mine hours ago. I just feel sorry for those that struggle because not every Sainsbury’s carries a vinyl section.

Sainsbury’s Team Valley Gateshead had two copies this morning – not out on shelves when I went.

Something weird going on. One branch I have tried nothing on shelf, but when the member of staff came back from the stock room – she returned with a copy of Zygon Hunt. Tried another (much larger branch) who had 5 copies of Zygon Hunt last year. They haven’t got it in…

In Halifax, no sign of it and staff have no idea about it. Great start.

Does anyone know if Sainsburys put vinyl stock out at a particular time of day? I can walk to one before work on the release date, but its a bit of a hike…

With limited edition ones you have to ask the staff members and they will go and get it for you. They keep them locked away as they are limited edition. This is what happened when I went to get Energy of the Daleks and the Zygon Hunt

When I got Zygons there were two copies on the normal record shelf, during an early evening ‘big shop’. Which was fortunate, but I assumed the stock was put out, like everything else, after 9pm? Thanks for any info All.

Employees don’t care about them, so you have to ask for them to start thinking, “Might as well put out the rest of them!”

All times I’ve been they have just been out on the shelf. Don’t think the staff are briefed or even care. It’s just another product. Maybe that person is unlucky that their sainsbury’s has a doctor who fan manager who with holds stock on purpose lol

I don’t think there’s that much of an official policy in place, as such, Daniel. As others have said, I think whether or not copies have to be fetche four from the stock room is down to varying awareness levels and times-of-putting-out-stock from one store to another.

And Sainsbury’s also said not till then either. Letter’s were sent to the store informing them that there would be a delay and they won’t be out till 2nd August.

Looking at the picture, it looks like there is going to be a gatefold. Now, I can’t see it including another LP considering the story is only 60 minutes long, so I am very curious on what else is going to be in the gatefold, that’s if it is a gatefold. Will it be blank or will it feature something else like a poster for example. I am looking forward to finding out.

Same, was expecting Return to Telos to be the next Fourth Doctor vinyl as I don’t think we’ve had a Cyberman story next, and it’s only really Fourth and Tenth Doctor stories that seem to be released on vinyl. Looking forward to hearing this though.

Am a bit surprised there is no cyberman big finish yes, especially we have had ice warriors, zygon’s and dalek’s. I assume it’s mainly 4th and 10th doctor stories due to the larger popularity of these 2 incarnations of the doctor and Big Finish know this and know they will be more popular then others and so will sell well.

It doesn’t look like there will be a change any time soon because Death and the Queen was announced at Big Finish Day to be the next story to get the vinyl treatment which I am very happy that a strong tenth doctor story will be getting the vinyl treatment. I really hope that Big Finish Productions can expand and produce some vinyl releases for spin-offs. I would love to see some Torchwood stories get the vinyl treatment.
