Doctor Who: The Day of the Doctor (Target Collection)

Available to order from www.amazon.co.uk

Also available to order from www.bookdepository.com

Discover the new Doctor Who classics.

When the entire universe is at stake, three different Doctors will unite to save it.

The Tenth Doctor is hunting shape-shifting Zygons in Elizabethan England. The Eleventh is investigating a rift in space-time in the present day. And one other – the man they used to be but never speak of – is fighting the Daleks in the darkest days of the Time War.

Driven by demons and despair, this battle-scarred Doctor is set to take a devastating decision that will threaten the survival of the entire universe… a decision that not even a Time Lord can take alone.

On this day, the Doctor’s different incarnations will come together to save the Earth… to save the universe… and to save his soul.

I love how the Target novelisations were known for having dodgy cover pictures, and they continued this here

Great cover. Love the fact that they have kept the daleks drawn the same as the original target books, like Dr who and the daleks for example.

Ah here we are, the episode that undid 7 series’ of post war doctor characterization because moffatt couldn’t bare to leave all those timelords dead because we know how much he loves unkilling people. The whole episode should have been about the doctor accepting his decision right up to the projection scene where the war doctor has his two other selves with him by his side while they make the toughest decision of their lives for the good of the universe. But no let’s just undo the whole thing because why not

I absolutely wholeheartedly disagree. It was completely the right decision to bring the Time Lords back – RTD said he would’ve done it himself eventually. The Time Lords are as much part of Doctor Who as the Daleks, so getting rid of them in the first place was a bad move. The Day of the Doctor had to have a happy ending – and ending it with Tom Baker telling Matt Smith that his people were still alive was perfection

    • The Outcast

      February 23rd, 2018 - 11:19am

I wish the entire story had been about the Doctor finding a Timelord colony on an Asteroid (a surviving splinter of Gallifrey) and dealing with the destruction of most of Gallifrey. I’d much rather have had that than have them get resurrected.

    • Whorules

      February 23rd, 2018 - 12:20pm

They weren’t resurrected, they never actually died.

    • Whorules

      February 23rd, 2018 - 12:26pm

It never sat right with me that the doctor would destroy the time lords even to destroy the daleks. It’s just not what the doctor would do. And that is exactly what this story is about, what it means to be the doctor. And it doesn’t alter the fact that from the moment war doctor regenerates until the 11th doctor experiences the events of this story, the doctor believes he did destroy gallifrey. The fact that he saved it is just the doctor being the doctor.

      February 23rd, 2018 - 7:04pm

I’d have let it slide if we’d seen people actually die in the episode. The fact that into the Dalek had four onscreen extermination’s and the day of the doctor, the episode depicting the actual time war had a grand total of….0 extermination’s is a shambles

    • The Outcast

      February 25th, 2018 - 6:09am

I think Day would have been better if we’d had the 8th or 9th Doctor in it, and a few more cameos from classic characters. Imagine seeing Sylvester McCoy as the Black Archive Security guard, Colin Baker in the background of the Timelord war room and Peter Davison as the commander of the soldiers who turn up to save Queen Elizabeth.

Just had an email through stating these (day of the Doctor, Rose & Christmas Invasion) will now be released on April 5th and not June as previously reported. Don’t know if this affects the audiobooks or not and no update on Twice Upon a time, sorry.

I wonder who’s going to read the recording for these audiobooks. Normally they get actors who were in some way associated with the productions, but that could still mean a lot of people. Perhaps Camille Coduri for The Christmas Invasion or Rose?

I can’t imagine the paperbacks will take too much longer to come to order. They’re already on Book Depository at the very least (which is my preferred service anyway).

Here’s a thought, how about target books of the matt smith adventure games? I’d love a novel based on city of the daleks or the gunpower plot. Oh, and it’s time for dr who meets scratchman as well.
Should explain why I’m so excited about these novels. I have read the target novels for 40 years now. I mean that literally i started when i was seven and I’m now 47 and every year i read at least 4 or 5 target books again. The fact that a new generation can now start with new who adaptations is just wonderful, my nephew and niece are really buzzing about day of the doctor and twice upon a time. Here’s to the future of who books… long may they continue.

It depends. The Target novels are notorious for being extended, more developed versions of the original stories, however most of them were written by Terrence Dicks. So considering that they’ll be written by other people, for all we know it could just be a straight up adaptation of the script.

      November 12th, 2017 - 10:19pm

Depends really. Some of them were straight tv story versions in print. Others were somewhat different. I always found it difficult to read one where I knew the dialogue but the sentences were moved or altered. I found it was quite jarring.

I imagine these will see a good few extra scenes as there isn’t enough material in an hour show for a novel.

I will be interested to read a Moffat novel based on one of his own scripts. Could be quite revealing.

That’s really down to the author, they tend to delve a lot more into the background of events and characters than can be given on screen, but generally the events are faithful to what is on screen.

    Choices for next wave (hopefully!)

    Shada or pirate planet
Resurrection of the daleks (if possible)
Doctor who the movie with target makeover
    Unquiet dead
    Impossible planet/satan pit
    Asylum of the daleks
    Empress of mars
Personally I would happy with a monthly single release or a set every few months. Or frankly anything!

I agree, apart from yet another Shada. We have Shadas coming out of our ears.

The Movie I would particularly like to see, especially if it could retcon a few things with later additions to the mythology. What if the pocket watch Chang Lee opens is a chameleon arch?

Ok, if theoretically they were to do another wave of these books, which stories would you want novelised?
    My list:
Revelation of the Daleks (if possible. This novelisation would fill in a gap in the target novels)
    Aliens of London/World War 3
    Blink
    The Eleventh Hour
    Flatline

I would have 6 stories in the next wave (and I think they should have multiple part stories as one book under the name of the first episode eg the parallel earth 2 parter would be called just Rise of the Cybermen like the early classic serials) and I think they should see if they can get 9th done quite quickly as he only needs 12 more books. I would have the next wave as:
      Dalek (oh the cover possibilities)
Bad Wolf (can you tell I’m a dalek fan and again the cover possibilities)
      Gridlock (just a personal favourite)
      The Rebel Flesh
The Woman Who Lived (I think this story could work really well as a story opposed to an episode)
Empress Of Mars (very classic story)
And also it would be nice for the few classic stories that haven’t been done to get one also.

      November 12th, 2017 - 10:52pm

      Dalek
Voyage of the Damned, with a Time Crash prologue
      The Doctor’s Wife
World Enough And Time/The Doctor Falls
Series 11 Episode One (Would be nice to get a Jodie Whittaker story sometime after S11).

Does the price often lower on Book Depository? I’m getting a decent pay this week so I might pre-order these now, but then if you think I should wait for a cheaper price on BD (I should add that I really only get my books on BD, Amazon shipping prices are too much for me).

I really hope they are the same size as the target reprints. Mind, even if they are not – more please! Oh as ebury press are saying they have exclusive rights to series 11 i wonder if that means chris chibnall has given the ok for novels of the stories. I do hope so as i was very disappointed when r t davies said the new stories wouldn’t be novelised back in 2005.
