BBC Studios announces Season 10 as the next installment in the DOCTOR WHO: THE COLLECTION Blu-ray range

BBC Studios continues to offer Doctor Who fans the opportunity to build their own home archive on Blu-ray. The first jam-packed release for Jon Pertwee’s Third Doctor, Doctor Who – The Collection: Season 10, debuts on Monday 8th July, the very day after Pertwee himself would have turned 100.

In 1973, Doctor Who celebrated its tenth anniversary with a very special story reuniting the first two Doctors – William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton – with Jon Pertwee’s then-current Doctor. The Three Doctors kicks off an explosive, colourful series of adventures across all of time and space as the Doctor and Jo Grant (Katy Manning) encounter the rogue Time Lord Omega, the terrifying Drashigs, the noble Draconians, fearsome Ogrons, deadly Daleks and slithering giant maggots. Season 10 also includes the final appearance of Roger Delgado as the Doctor’s arch nemesis The Master, plus adventures alongside Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart (Nicholas Courtney) and UNIT.

Starring alongside Jon Pertwee are Katy Manning, Nicholas Courtney, Roger Delgado, Richard Franklin and John Levene.

With all episodes newly remastered from the best available sources, this Blu-ray box set also contains extensive and exclusive special features which include:

  • A brand new feature-length documentary examining the Third Doctor’s Era, with archival contributions from Jon Pertwee, Barry Letts and Terrance Dicks plus all-new interviews with Katy Manning, Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, presented by Matthew Sweet.
  • Updated special effects and surround sound mix for Planet of the Daleks.
  • Five new instalments of Behind the Sofa, featuring Katy Manning, Richard Franklin (Captain Yates) and John Levene (Sergeant Benton), along with 21st century Doctor Who panel Phil Collinson (Producer/Executive Producer), Pete McTighe (Writer) and Joy Wilkinson (Writer).
  • Looking for Lennie, a documentary investigating the life of director Lennie Mayne.
  • Keeping up with the Jones’, which sees Katy Manning with Stewart Bevan (Cliff Jones) pay a return visit to the Welsh locations from The Green Death.
  • Plus: a repeat omnibus of The Green Death unseen since Christmas 1973, rare Panopticon convention footage, Blu-ray trailer, HD photo galleries plus scripts, production files and rare documentation provided as PDFs.
  • The six-disc box set also includes hours of extensive special features previously released on DVD including two episodes of The Sarah Jane Adventures that saw Katy Manning’s Jo Jones meet the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith).

A specially shot announcement trailer – and sequel to classic adventure The Green Death – has debuted on the Doctor Who YouTube channel; written by new series contributor Pete McTighe (Kerblam!) and starring original Doctor Who companion, Katy Manning.

DOCTOR WHO: THE COLLECTION – SEASON 10 includes the following stories from 1972/73:

  • The Three Doctors
  • Carnival of Monsters
  • Frontier in Space
  • Planet of the Daleks
  • The Green Death

RRP: £56.16 and available from www.zoom.co.uk , www.amazon.co.uk and www.zavvi.com

To enjoy them on b&w doesnt mean they couldnt be turned into colour someday, or that me or others that would like to see it released officially in color as well have to “just enjoy them in B&W” with all respect mr anonymous, your opinion it’s respectable but “no, just no” to you sir, as not everyone agrees that just black and white it’s great to enjoy, and equally cinema born itself from just adding strokes of color to showcase emotions…The cabinet of dr. caligari anyone? besides here’s a list with more than 600 films that have been colorized so the argument it’s ambiguous as the taste of the watcher, on economical, capitalist or whatever scale you wanna call it, would assure a re-release of the basic b&w blu ray stories that will be the starting material for a colorized release..

Besides the interior of the tardis would look very great, as well as the chase and the web planet psychedelic scenery (again, quoting namely clayton hickman’s colorised pictures and kieran highman’s video with stuart humphryes collaboration for an idea of what it could be someday —> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMJEzf-ehlI <— the video makes for a full regular episode resuming the best from unearthly child to war games in color even the regeneration from tenth planet and the final shot from troughton in the war games) and that's a "fan" made thing mate…

Again with the respect of your taste, im open to enjoy both as surely the whovians that have followed claytons, kieran and stuart would do as well if someday a couple of stories could get their deserved color release…the production department making the dream of some come true doesn't excuse that some want them b&w like you and will get them and some would enjoy a colored version as well for an almost 60 year old show cause maybe some lil kids wouldnt find it as tedious to see an "old show", that's how things get renewed for the next generations without of silly remakes.

To finish; as said now i know that at least we'll get the b&w stories in hd and that's the blueprint, so with all respect mr, yes for you right now as you'll get what you want, yes for us the "we want em colored too" as we'll get them in blu ray and enjoy them in b&w too, but "no, just no" to blatantly deny the chance to classic doctor who to trascend to the classic b&w cinematography that have been colorized. Good afernoon.

You just are so used to colour that you’d rather watch the Season 1-6 in Colour. Sure it’s nice but the B&W is the great and original.

I’d rather they use the money to animate the missing episodes than colour black and white who. In particular the missing Dalek ones.

That way we get more who to ‘watch’.

I like the idea of having the b&w episode in colour, but after watching the laurel and hardy box set with colorized versions, I think the novelty wears off after a while because I found I’m enjoying the film’s content, how the acting and comedy plays out rather than thinking wow look at the colour. Admittedly these films were colorized a few year go so they have probably improved now. But what I’m saying is that the enjoy comes from story, be it in b&w as is. And Daz your right animate the missing one instead.

Honesty just to keep people happy. Colour the first episode of a unearthly child as a bonus

    • Lee

      April 17th, 2019 - 1:09am

My guess is it would have the opposite effect though. If you colour one episode, people will say “look it can be done with one, so now what about the rest!?”.

You’ll never keep people happy as they’ll always want more these days.

I’ve never understood the need for constantly wanting to change old film/TV programmes. I’m just happy with B&W episodes as they are. I just think some things are best left alone.

If they were originally broadcast in colour and only B&W survived, then I’d agree they need re-colouring. But, I’d rather they just left the B&W episodes as they originally were.

Plus, it’s costly anyway. Use the budget for better restorations as Gordon mentioned.

Looking forward to this one, I hope the BBC keep making Second Doctor animation reconstructions, and the First Doctor too, the 60s era is my favourite and I’d really love those Blu Ray sets. I wonder if after they’ve released all 26 seasons they’ll re-release the new series in the same style

As a very detailed economical and would even dare, ideas for the bbc marketing department and their colleages pushing the next releases, just to push forward this bluray thing, get your economy dept as well to greenlight and commisionate for the classic B&W serials in hd as well as colored, yeah it’s difficult cause of the lost serials rendering a full season impossible as well as “should they just leave it in B&W a la twilight zone blurays? or maybe why not both?”

Seriously fellas, with all the respect being 2019 and almost in the verge of the 56th anniversary it’s incredible how many fans and past workers of the show itself joined to colorise the classic era and have shared their work trought facebook, twitter and other social media but their effort hasn’t been put together and turned into an official release of a blu ray with color, in hd, upscaled and all the grace of the 70’s colored days just like the pertwee seasons were restored.

You know, as even incomplete some hartnell blu ray with a colored option could someday be made and at least just for the fun, include the first 3 serials with extra material as well as leaving an updated collection to hartnell’s intact dalek trilogy (invasion earth and the chase in 2 other separate discs with their special editions extra new material etc) That could be a kickstart to make honor to the original you might say…

But seriously guys just call clayton hickman, ( https://twitter.com/claytonhickman ) kieran highman ( https://twitter.com/The66Ramblers ) and the guy from babel colorur stuart humphryes ( https://twitter.com/StuartHumphryes ) put them to work together with more of their contacts that surely will help just for the love of the series (and to get free copies for themselves) just like the chaps that remade mission to the unknown and there you have your hartnell blu ray even if not a complete season.

Could we get the definitive “the first doctor:early journeys/ the daleks trilogy? (as it equally fits perfectly for being a susan and barbara trilogy anyway) Could we get that at least for the 60th anniversary? just for the joy of those fans that could get to see the lost serials in their original glory and those younger like me that maybe wont see them recovered at all.

That way maybe those in different generations who share the same passion could get to have the option to see the daleks either in their silver and blue 60’s coat or in monochrome before someone finds the master plan.

To the generations that are going away dont worry, the younglings will carry the torch with honor. #ReleaseTheHartnellBluRay 😛

They will release seasons 1-6 as sets, a panel with the restoration team confirmed they will be working on the whole classic series including the black and white ones. Whether or not they will recolour stories is unknown but very unlikely due to the costs involved. Personally I couldn’t care less about recoloured Hartnell and Troughton stories, I love the atmosphere of watching those early serials in Black and White. They will fill gaps where stories are missing with animations, telesnaps etc. unless Phil Morris has some more episodes up his sleeve of course.

      April 16th, 2019 - 4:51pm

I’d rather see them get hired to improve on ambassadors 2-7, mind 2-6 and dinos 1 personally. Doing a full story would take years of work from scratch. At least with ambassadors etc a lot of the work has been done already

    • Lee

      April 16th, 2019 - 4:57pm

I genuinely couldn’t care less about colouring B&W TV & films. If it was broadcast in B&W then I’m happy to watch it like that.
It’s like when people say they want to see them converted to widescreen. Why? They weren’t filmed or broadcast like that.
Just because you can do it, doesn’t mean you should.

Others will have different opinions, maybe I’m just old fashioned, but I say just leave them how they are.

I don’t even watch these classic episodes in 5.1 as the mixes always seem a little forced to me on mono or stereo programmes. Just my preference though.

      April 16th, 2019 - 5:30pm

For the sake of novelty I would quite like to see just the first episode, An Unearthly Child, colourised but I agree it would be time better spent sorting out Invasion of the Dinosaurs Part 1.

Right. Just for the 60th anniversary. Release An Unearthly Child / The Daleks / The Edge of Destruction in Colour. And see what you get. Maybe just colourise the opening episode of an unearthly child

oh sorry, got excited ian* and barbara daleks trilogy should be a thing, just saw some days ago the full 21 minute video that kieran highman did for specific stories of the first and second doctor eras. Scott has a point, but when you watch that video it gives you a lot of emotions cause the colored lights reflecting on the characters are very vivid, the scenes from the celestial toymaker in color are magestic, and the daleks bits are really awesome, the right pigments of blue and silver like the character options figures.

thanks for the info fellas, i hope to get this bluray as its a landmark for the show itself, and again, just crossing fingers here for the extras to include 1st and 2nd doctor timelines or something like that in the docus 🙂 just to get their scenes to make it to blu ray

No. Just no. They were made in black and white so just enjoy them in black and white. Some of my all time favourite movies are in black and white and I would not buy them in colourised formats.

    April 16th, 2019 - 3:36pm

Ok. The rest of the boxset looks gorgeous. I love the colour scheme and everything. Discs look amazing. The thing is. Pertwee looks really really bored and dull and his neck is so small. Minor complaint. Also, The Three Doctor could have had some special effects options. That episode really needs it. In fact. I would have paid to have seen Frontier in Space get some too. If they were making these to be the definitive sets. Please take time on getting these out and don’t rush. But then again. I never use the optional special effects so it doesn’t bother me. It’s just a lot of releases (Macra Terror mostly) have let’s put it, Cut a lot of Corners recently. And cut because of time. This is the last time you could do anything with these episodes so make sure it’s 99.99% complete. Not too sure about the behind the sofa guest list. But I never watch them so it doesn’t matter.

I’ve seen others say they would have liked CGI for Three Doctors and Green Death but I personally don’t see the need for either of those stories.

    • The ergon

      April 16th, 2019 - 6:47pm

CGI as an alternative vastly improves those old style and sometimes really ropey effects but i think should be replaced on a separate disc/segregate the two, and not as optional as it often feels like something that is brushed under the carpet. You just know deep down that something is just being covered up and so its easier to accept these were the best effects they could muster at the time. Even on the DVDs i rarely play them with optional effects unless i,m playing to an audience who don,t fully appreciate how TV was made back then and would find it laughable.

well that was a bit of a missed chance to include 1st and 2nd next to omega, i mean, this will be the closest we’ll get to see them on bluray (specially hartnell, as at least pat can get 2 more blu rays to pop in.

By the other hand, i really hope that the new docus and extras to include linking scenes from the 63-69 era,at least for planet of the daleks being a “direct sequel” of the original daleks serial.

    • dalekinium

      April 16th, 2019 - 6:11pm

didnt know about those sets scott, so not only the seasons are being made into blu rays, mmm dear dear… well as said before on the other reply, could imagine at least the first serial in color, B&W its awesome but truly as i’ve seen on (very impressive) fan colorizations, the lighting effects and their colors reflecting on characters or surfaces are worth to imagine that it could be done “officially” someday for full serials releases, they can re-release them anyway if by the moment a B&W version exists (thinking about maybe a re-issue of those blu rays with the same cover picking the material from the original release but with an added subtitle or sticker or whatever “now in color and b&w”) … i just dream about that one not that much secretly anymore. 🙂

    • James

      April 16th, 2019 - 5:27pm

Yes there must be another set in between. If you look at the turnaround, we got Season 12 in July last year so within 13 months we will have had 4 sets so it would be extremely unlikely that they would leave a 5 month gap between Season 10 and Season 26. It is likely we’ll get the next one in late September/early October. My money is on Season 22 which would be good for me because I love Colin’s Doctor, and it also means that when we get Season 26 in December we will have at least one season of each Doctor from 3 to 7 on bluray.

    • Gordon

      April 16th, 2019 - 4:45pm

Correct. The cost of doing alternative effects will be extremely expensive. Add on the expensive restoration of dinos ep 1 and it might not be feasible to do both. As much as I’d like alternative effects the priority of the budget should be going towards getting ep 1 the best it’s ever going to look. If the budget comes to an either or there the choice should absolutely go on a colour ep 1

    • Lee

      April 16th, 2019 - 7:50pm

I definitely don’t think it would ever happen, but if one story really needed updated effects – then that’s the one I would pick! 😀 And I rarely pick the updated effects options, as I always like them as they were broadcast.

But my god do those Dinos look hilariously dodgy in that story! 😀

      April 16th, 2019 - 8:53pm

Actually, there a slight difference, technically, but I’m sure not one intended by Jo’s comment. When surround sound systems first came out, it was just a single audio track to both rear speakers to create a surround sound effect. However, 5.1 typically refers to 5 separate audio channels (plus sub-woofer), creating a greater sense of audio perspective behind you as well as in front. This is particularly noticeable with, say, the sound of a helicopter in the background moving from one side to the other.

for whatever reason zoom don’t seem to be on the ball with these releases and probably loose a large amount of orders because of it.

Zoom are very on the ball when it comes to dispatching in time though and that’s why I will be holding out for them to put it up 😉 they have a loyal customer here i expect others will wait for them too

The vast majority of these sets are ordered in the 1st few hours, mostly from Amazon and then people move on.

Zoom were on the press release for the 1st time so they should have had it up ready, many people have never heard of zoom so if they want the big business they need to be ready.

This is even more important now as Amazon have gone straight in at £39.99

Cancelled with Amazon. Just ordered from Zoom for £35 using the signup code again. I’m surprised they are still letting people use that on every order though.

Due for release the day after Jon’s 100th birthday. I’d imagine they wouldn’t want this getting delayed. With the 24th of June date Hmv had listed I’m hopeful this time that they have actually waited till it’s ready

It seems that way – time will tell, then again not only does it always, but Troughton’s Macra Terror was released on his 99th birthday – imagine if they pull the Pertwee date off – we may very well see the next animnation for Troughton’s or even – finger’s crossed – Season 6! I think the next animation as a DVD is more likely than a collection installment

Initially not very warm toward the cover – Pertwee looks strange (anyone think that too?) – I was hoping for red but actually green is very nice; good see his sonic too! Sad that Delgado is not in the front – he must be on season 8 & 9 or that would be sad; hope he’s on Frontier in Space disc. Anyone know if keeping up with the Jones’s is a full version of the sequel teased as the announcement? And is Death of the Doctor upscaled at all?
Really hope the Sarah Jane adventures and torchwood get this treatment too. Can’t wait to get this and especially on Pertwees 100th- hope they get it on properly for this one as it’s a nice tribute

I did think his shoulders and head do look a bit odd! His shoulders seem a bit hunched up. 😀

Just looked at it again. Think it’s more his head that looks a bit strange. It’s like when they CGI a face onto another person’s body and it doesn’t quite look realistic. Plus, it’s not the best expression of Jon’s to pick.
But, not going to stop me from buying it! 😀

The textless artwork version does look a lot better. Death of the doctor was filmed in hd so it will be hd on the disc. Delgado will probably be on s8 seeing as he’s in every story

Death of the Doctor shouldn’t need upscaling as it was shot in HD in the first place (I believe that SJA was filmed in HD from Series 3 onwards, and this story was from Series 4).

Ol, you’re telling me that this box set includes a multi doctor story, a huge milestone for the show and it doesn’t have updated sound and effects?
    Yeah, thank’s but no!!
    Would have got this otherwise.

Bang and I’m sorted, £35 Zoom pre order was what I was waiting for (though ordered with Amazon as soon as it was listed just to cover myself lol, will cancel that now) looks fabulous as usual.
And I love Zoom, they’ve never let me down.

I still really want them to re-release season 12 for those of us who didn’t get it.

Honestly, I can’t see it happening. I think people might be disappointed if they are waiting on a re-release. Some people have emailed the BBC, and they did say they were only going to be limited releases in the UK. Not sure why the BBC decided to do that for the UK, but that’s their decision.

Your best bet of getting it now is to pick up the US version. That doesn’t seem to be a limiters release so far. Not ideal, but at least it’s better than nothing if you really want to get.
I don’t know if they are region locked on the US version though, maybe somebody else knows about that.
You could always pick it up and sell it “IF” the UK version ever does get a re-release.

By all accounts the US release is not region locked. I’ve seen this confirmed on several forums.

Season 26 is the next set I think, but in terms of the next Pertwee set; I think Season 7 would be a good choice!

Sophie Aldred said at a convention on Saturday that she and Sylvester have been recording extras for Season 26! 🙂

      April 16th, 2019 - 12:25pm

7 is a while off. Ambassadors needs a lot of work and there is none of the 3 main s7 regulars left in terms of getting new extras. Russel Minton said recently he hasn’t looked at what new can be done extras wise for that season so I’d take that as a sign it’s a couple of years off

Beautiful promotional advert – there’s a reference to “Devil’s End”, I wonder if Season Eight will be the next Pertwee Box Set to be released . . .
