Doctor Who – The Aztecs Special Edition DVD

dvd-the-aztecs-specedDoctor Who – The Aztecs Special Edition DVD

Released in 2013

The TARDIS arrives in fifteenth century Mexico inside the tomb of one-time Aztec High Priest Yetaxa. The travellers become cut off from the ship when they explore the temple outside and the tomb door closes behind them. Barbara is proclaimed by the High Priest of Knowledge, Autloc, as Yetaxa’s divine reincarnation. However, she incurs the enmity of the High Priest of Sacrifice, Tlotoxl, when – against the Doctor’s advice – she attempts to use her new-found authority to put an end to the Aztec practice of human sacrifice.

Events reach a climax on the Day of Darkness – the time of a solar eclipse. Ian’s unwilling conflict with the Aztecs’ ‘chosen warrior’, Ixta, ends in a fight in which the latter falls to his death from the temple roof. The Doctor manages to reopen the tomb door using a wheel-and-pulley that he has carved (the Aztecs not having mastered the use of the wheel) and the travellers make good their escape.

Disc 1

4 x 25 mins approx monochrome episodes with mono audio. Optional Arabic soundtrack for episode four only.

Commentary – stereo. With actors William Russell and Carole Ann Ford, producer Verity Lambert OBE.

Remembering The Aztecs – Actors John Ringham, Ian Cullen and Walter Randall recall the production of the story and of television production in the sixties in general.

Designing The Aztecs – Designer Barry Newbery talks about his work on the story, illustrated with many never-before-seen production drawings and photographs from his personal collection.

Cortez and Monezuma – An extract from a 1970 Blue Peter, introduced by Valerie Singleton on location in Mexico, giving historical background to the Aztec belief in human sacrifice.

Restoring The Aztecs – A short featurette demonstrating the restoration and videoisation effects used for the release. With subtitles.

Making Cocoa – An animated guide to making cocoa the Aztec way, voiced in character by John Ringham as Tlotoxl and Walter Randall as Tonila, with both characters animated and presented in South Park style.

TARDIS-Cam no.3 – The third of BBCi’s TARDIS-Cam shots.

Photo Gallery – production, design and publicity photos from the story

Easter Egg – An animated BBC Enterprises logo recovered from the end of one of the prints sold overseas.

Intro Sequences – The umbrella story title The Aztecs does not appear on any of the episodes, so for (outdated now) BBFC compliance a caption card with the title has been provided. To add interest, six versions have been provided, each with a different voiceover, in character, from three of the actors involved in the production. The intention is that the disc will randomly select one of these six sequences and play it out at the appropriate point.

PDF Material – Radio Times listings in Adobe PDF format for viewing on PC or Mac

Programme subtitles.

Disc 2

Galaxy 4 (dur. 64’ 43”) – a shortened reconstruction of the missing story Galaxy 4, using off-screen stills, audio recordings and animation plus the recently recovered complete episode three to tell the story.

Chronicle – The Realms of Gold – John Julius Norwich’s superlative 1969 retelling of the story of the Spanish conquest of Mexico and the Aztecs, which also features music by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop .

Dr. Forever! – Celestial Toyroom – the first of a new five-part series introduced by Ayesha Antoine looks at Doctor Who toys. With original series producer Verity Lambert, new series creator Russell T Davies, writers Mark Gatiss, Rob Shearman, Paul Cornell and Joseph Lidster, BBC Worldwide product licensing executive Richard Hollis, product approval executive Dave Turbitt and ex- range editor Steve Cole, AudioGO commissioning editor Michael Stevens, Character Options’ Alasdair Dewar, DWM’s toy reviewer Jim Sangster and last, but by no means least, Doctor Who’s very own Winston Churchill, actor Ian McNiece.

It’s a Square World – the very first Doctor Who skit (as far as we can ascertain), with Clive Dunn in full First Doctor costume as a scientist demonstrating his new space rocket to Michael Bentine, resulting in Television Centre being launched into space! Features cameo appearances by Patrick Moore and Albert Steptoe.

A Whole Scene Going – an excerpt from a recently recovered edition of the sixties music and arts programme, featuring an interview with director Gordon Flemyng and a behind the scenes look at filming of his movie Daleks’ Invasion Earth: 2150 AD.

Coming Soon – a trailer for a forthcoming DVD release.

l figured something like that had happened with the Death to the Daleks DVD Release. can l ask though, why do the Region 2 DVD’s from the UK still have it on the very bottom conner on the spine as well as the BBC logo too did it just seem wise to keep because in Australia they’re all without reversible covers and so forth

No chance of it appearing as a special feature. children in need charge about 4k a minute(56k in total). Its not financially viable as an extra. Plus the restoration team website is clear: As the artistes taking part gave their time free of charge it was agreed that BBC Worldwide (then BBC Enterprises) would never seek to exploit it commercially in any form.
No amount of suggestions, “what ifs” or general pleading is likely to change this. That would include for charity purposes

People! I want genuine information on animated episodes. I would like to see:
The Crusade, Episodes 2 and 4
    The Tenth Planet, Episode 4
The Underwater Menace, Episodes 1 and 3
The Moonbase, Episodes 1 and 3
The Ice Warriors, Episodes 2 and 3

Is this likely? I need to know more about the DVD range’s future 🙂

It’s very likely because they only have one or two missing episodes. I defently want those story’s to be released on DVD!we know that they plan to release the tenth planet, the ice warriors, the underwater menace and the moonbase! I wish they had plans for the crusade but most of these story’s won’t get released this year only maybe the underwater menace, ice warriors and the tenth planet! Hopefully they find more story’s but I think 2014 will be the last releases of the doctor who DVD range then from then on it will be rereleased on Blu ray!

    • Lachlan

      January 17th, 2013 - 10:28pm

It can’t be re-released on Blu-Ray… Once the DVD Range is finished it will be finished there’s no doubt in the future with new Restoration Technology they could produce perhaps finish Special Editions of the Older Releases before 2 Entertain but it looks like Animation Releases is so far the future along with hopefully more recovered Doctor Who Episodes.

    • gordon

      January 18th, 2013 - 9:26am

Everything is top secret at the moment. They wont even reveal whether or not ice warriors is getting animated (they have said the vhs recon will appear as an extra but hasnt revealed what is exactly happening with the 2 eps). Im sure things will become clearer after reign of terror is released

    • MasterKasterborous

      January 18th, 2013 - 6:54pm

      January 21st, 2013 - 5:24pm

GUYS! I have logical proof they are animating The Tenth Planet Episode 4 and Episodes 2 and 3 of The Ice Warriors!

In Issue 449 of Doctor Who Magazine there is an article called “Infomania!” about the Subtitle Production Notes provided on DVD releases of COMPLETE Doctor Who serials.

At the bottom of the article, in the list called “Who Wrote That?” it lists Stephen James Walker as writing The Tenth Planet notes and Martin Wiggins for The Ice Warriors. These notes would not be provided if they were just doing reconstructions! PROOF.

    • Some bloke

      January 21st, 2013 - 5:41pm

to all the people saying about re-release to blu-ray. Its not possible. Spearhead from space is the only classic which will get a blu-ray release cus all of it was filmed on location (filmed directly on to 16mm film). All other 20th century stories were filmed on a mix of 16mm film and video tape. The video footage cant be restored to hi-def quality which is why it isn’t possible for all the other classic stories to be released on blu-ray

gettting animated on time. Nicholas Briggs who was one of the producers on the animated eps of reign has been mentioned that most of the time was spent developing the correct software required and a few months were wasted as the software was unsuitable. future animations should be faster so it might not be an issue after all.

    • Lachlan

      January 13th, 2013 - 11:42pm

Are they planning on releasing The Underwater Menace this year???

    • Gordon

Current speculation is yes but nothing is official yet

    • Lachlan

      January 14th, 2013 - 4:16am

couldn’t these new animated releases ruin in a way the Lost in Time release, its obvious they wouldn’t remake Lost in Time with fewer material. Actually a good thing to ask to all you folks haha out there who have Lost in Time, would you buy the future animated releases since you already have the missing episodes on the animated releases because in the future they could make (with the popularity of the Reign of Terror of course) for example The Celestial Toymaker, l mean you’ll already have the episode.

    • Lachlan

      January 14th, 2013 - 4:31am

It would be cool though for Episodes that don’t exist entirely like Marco Polo and Power of the Daleks to be fully animated but of course (economic reasons) I always dream though of Doctor Who to be broadcast again on children’s shows in the afternoon from the First Doctor on, but with Episodes that were missing animated, that would be pretty awesome as such but like that’s ever going to happen haha.

    • Gordon

      January 14th, 2013 - 10:59am

Id be prepared to buy any story that gets animated even if they have been in LIT but it all depends on if i like the style of animation. Reign looks beautiful but ive read mixed reviews on the editing style. Some have described it as magna on acid and it sticking out when it compares to the surviving eps and on the other side some have loved it and said it was easy to follow. Not long to wait till i find out for myself.

    • dr who 1999

      January 14th, 2013 - 11:38am

what is the time period for when they will be monitoring reign of terror sales?

    • Gordon

      January 14th, 2013 - 8:54pm

Probably the first week sales. Thats how most companies base their sales. And as they will look at total worldwide sales they wont get that till the 2nd half of february

    • drjakeyoung

      January 14th, 2013 - 10:08pm

so would it make more sense to buy it the day it’s released then? (28th)

    • Gordon

      January 15th, 2013 - 12:13am

yes or at least buy it in the first week.Ive got it preordered so its no issue for me. Btw babelcolour has finished doing all 205 shots of mind of evil ep 1 and its now in colour. However he is redoing 12 shots that he completed for a test sequence about three years ago that are now showing their age. The dozen old shots will be just updating them (improving the skin-tones etc) and shouldn’t actually take too long to zip through.

    • drjakeyoung

      January 15th, 2013 - 11:51am

so by the end of January do you think he will be completely done?

    • gordon

      January 15th, 2013 - 12:43pm

Hopefully but he said its about 100 hours worth of work and with his full time job on top of the work its 16/17 hour days for the next 2 weeks (not an easy task). He also has a few other shots he personally wants to redo but it all depends on whether or not he gets the time as the deadline for it to be completed is just over 3 weeks away.

    • drjakeyoung

      January 15th, 2013 - 5:13pm

what happens if he runs out of time? (i know hopefully he wont, but what if)

    • gordon

      January 15th, 2013 - 6:08pm

It will just go in as it is. All 205 shots are done and the the episode is in colour. He is updating shots that were done 3 years ago. All the work now is improving shots that are showing their age or he feels he could do better.

    • drjakeyoung

      January 15th, 2013 - 6:45pm

cool, so we can expect mind of evil on DVD around July-august time?

    • gordon

      January 15th, 2013 - 7:09pm

Id say early august as the restoration is done 6 months in advance and july is full with the spearhead blu ray

    • Lachlan

      January 17th, 2013 - 10:33pm

Since l live in Australia in the City how are they going to monitor sales internationally from the UK? there’s no doubt l’ll buy it first day l only have Planet of Giants from the First Doctor so this would be an awesome release 🙂 But l’d just like to know in case it turns out l have somewhere to go for a week and l’m not in a position to buy it.

    • gordon

      January 18th, 2013 - 9:16am

They will recieve sales figures from their australian distributers

    • Lachlan

      January 18th, 2013 - 12:00pm

Sorry but l meant to say for the Reign of Terror Release how long will they monitor sales outside the UK as being above average not how will they haha l would have thought that obvious ah well silly me not always going over what l type because l type so quickly :/

    • gordon

      January 27th, 2013 - 9:26pm

probably about the same length of time ie first week

  • Lachlan

    January 12th, 2013 - 11:48am

l was wondering since we now know all of what’s announced for this year l think? (l don’t think they’re going to squeeze any more Special Edition releases in this year) What should we expect for 2014? or is 2013 the end of the DVD Range? which would make sense for it being the Anniversary Year in a way. I do know that there is the chance for Animation DVD Releases and l’m sure no matter what if any missing episode came to light they would release it somehow but even then the DVD Range for Doctor Who seems like its coming to an end in content…

Is there the possibility in the future for technological advancements to allow for the range to start again in Blu-Ray perhaps? who knows what the future holds but even so it would be good to know what to expect for Classic Doctor Who. Although l’ve heard there iTunes range is going well.

    • Anonymous

      January 12th, 2013 - 12:19pm

The intention was to have all existing footage out by the anniversary, althoguh that might not happen due to complications with The Underwater Menace Episode 2.

Also Blu-Ray is a no go as far as this range is concerned, two stories from the 20th century could be upscaled, one is in the process of being done as we speak and the other nobody knows if the original footage still exists to allow the process to get underway.

    • Gordon

      January 13th, 2013 - 9:21pm

City of death is fine. Its got a whole disc of extras and cant be inproved visually. Also i cant see a lesure hive revisit. They wont remove any of those extras as bbcww own the rights to them (everything so far that has been removed was down to rights)and people wouldnt be happy with their removalplus appart from a making of its fine.

    • Lachlan

      January 14th, 2013 - 4:06am

l agree with Gordon on this one, The City of Death is a brilliant release cover, extras, quality everything. I think for the few releases left that haven’t been revisited from 2003 – 2006, the 2-Disc Releases shouldn’t need revisiting. Talons of Weng-Chiang was needless to say amazing with its extra disc, though I think the Green Death could very well be the last Special Edition.

We dont know yet whether or not they have animated ice warriors and tenth planet.I would like to think they are going to make an anouncement on animation on those 2 after reign comes out. Keeping the more anticipated stories quiet till the less anticipated out of the 3 is released.

It was mentioned that both stories werent in production but that interview steve roberts was quoted from was february 2012. Plenty could have happened since then. Dont know why doctorwhonews.net are only mentioning it now. It was the same interview that revealed babelcolour was colourising ep 1 of mind of evil shows how long ago it was

      January 5th, 2013 - 10:42pm

what makes you think they haven’t got it in the process of animation?

      January 5th, 2013 - 11:34pm

They haven’t found any episodes! Have they? There were news of the moonbase being found and there wanting to release that soon?it would be great to have the ice warriors and tenth planet complete again!! 🙂
Thouw would they keep a secret that big from the who fans? And the tenth planet is the last william hartnell story with his regeneration in it! I dour they would not tell the public strait away! There has been animations for the ice warriors and tenth planet so there maybe getting released this year!!!!!

    • Gordon

      January 6th, 2013 - 9:11pm

@conner Moonbase find was false. I think sammi is just assuming they have found the episodes as doctorwhonews.net reported steve roberts mentioned in an interview that animation was not yet in production for ice warriors and tenth planet. What doctorwhonews.net fails to mention is that the interview was taken 11 months ago and a lot could have happened since then

    • Connor

      January 7th, 2013 - 11:38am

But what’s with them not telling us anything about the releases of the ice warriors and tenth planet! In fact the regin of terror DVD was announced to be animated and showed images way before the release! So something’s going on that the BBC and 2 entertain arn’t telling us!Like how is the DVD trailer for the ice warriors already done if they haven’t even done the animation! So there’s 3 explernations for this one being that they have found the episodes,2 they have animated them,3 they haven’t done anything for the lost episodes of these stories!

    • Gordon

      January 7th, 2013 - 8:51pm

Or option 4 they are keeping the more anticipated stories quiet until the lesser anticipated story is out as to not get overshadowed by the more anticipated stories. The new dwm is due this week. It could give us hinters what is happening with ice warriors.

well series 7 part 2 is obviously wrong, 31st of march (or possibly 6th April) is the air date of part 2, so like you said, just placeholder dates

    • Connor

      January 3rd, 2013 - 10:38pm

I am defernently getting the complete series 7 box set for 3 reasons! 1:the episodes so far are amazing and the episodes in the 2 part of the series looks awsome with the jurney to the centre of the tardis, the last cyberman, the return of the ice warriors and much more exciting things to come! 2: the box set will include 15 episodes! Including the doctor, the widow and the wardrobe and all of series 7 part 1 and 2! And the snowman christmas episode! 3: it’s my favorite season so far so pretty much I want this box set!

i have the 2011 Christmas special and series 7 part 1 limited edition, and now instead of buying part 2 i want to buy the complete series 7 but i already have half the series. I don’t know what to do but i really want the complete box set, i mean should i sell them? i don’t know because i have got that cool poster with the limited edition one. Or should i just keep them and buy those episodes again with the box set?

    • drjakeyoung

      January 4th, 2013 - 4:20pm

the main reason i want the complete series 7 is because of all the extra’s you will get with it. i mean look at the series 6 box set you get tones of extra’s and additional scenes that you don’t with the part 1 and part 2 box sets. what do you all think i should do?

  • Connor

    January 1st, 2013 - 11:20pm

What happened to the days when they asked the fans what they wanted for DVD release! They need to bring that back so everyone got what they wanted again and it’s much more better for sales if they actually release something that people actually want! I wasn’t a fan of them re releasing the green death I was fine with it! We all have different opinions and what DVDs should be special editioned. I want earthshock and dalek invasion of earth and some people want the leisure hive. So each to there own opinion but they should do that again.

Well l wouldn’t say some people want the Leisure Hive now that l know about the various extras on that release l would say the first release is good enough, but yes a lot of people do want Earthshock and Dalek Invasion of Earth to be revisited but at the moment l’m pretty sure the Restoration Team has all the cards since there are only a few Stories left to be on DVD with the Main Range finished basically by 2014 there is no real need for the opinions of the fans. Anyway if there is no need for a Special Edition l guess there is no need.

    • Gordon

      January 2nd, 2013 - 12:10am

Actually when there was rumours about an earthshock se the general consensance on the gb forum was pretty much negative. Most dont feel it needs revisiting.

    • Lachlan

      January 2nd, 2013 - 12:42am

(Well when it comes to the amount of people that have commented on Doctor Who Merchandise) all l’ve seen over the past few days on Special Editions is about Earthshock and the Dalek Invasion of Earth.

    • Gordon

      January 2nd, 2013 - 8:39am

If dan hall did listen to what stories fans say needs revisiting we would have just endless revisits and it would get silly (i have actually seen somebody say they want war games revisited and imo that is one of the best dvd releases that they have ever released). As conner says different fans want different things. Some fans are already sceptical about the double dip and rereleasing stories only because of a couple of fans wanting it is not going to help matters. There has to be some technological reasons involved and there really isnt any.

      January 2nd, 2013 - 9:51am

More importanly before re-releasing stories, IMO, i’d rather see all stories released, for example Mind of Evil rather than seeing Inferno released again. Some of the stories mentioned for a re-release are fine as they are, we don’t need a re-release of Earthshock or Dalek Invasion of Earth; they were fine as they were along with their extras. And whilst I’m happy to see Green Death get more of an extra treatment, for one just one more 30-minute documentary making of i’m not sure is worth an extra £16. The Who pound can only go so far.

    • Gordon

      January 2nd, 2013 - 10:13am

Revisitations are extra releases and dont effect the main release schedule For example inferno being rereleased isnt effecting the release of mind of evil. The colourisation of mind of evil is what is holding that one back not the restoration of another story.

    • Gordon

      January 2nd, 2013 - 12:56pm

There was a poll recently on the gb forums about what title should be revisited next. Out of a choice of 6 Green death won with a massive 41 percent (bear in mind that was before it was announced) then it was 2 doctors then pyramid of mars, then dioe (only 12 percent) then earthshock (9 percent) and fenric.

    • Mr Zarbi

      January 2nd, 2013 - 4:49pm

Inferno quality is awful and Spearhead is getting a blu-ray se and they are re-releasing the dalek movies for blu-ray.

    • Mr Zarbi

      January 2nd, 2013 - 4:54pm

Maybe a terror of the autons se as you can only get it in a boxset with spearhead se.

    • Gordon

      January 2nd, 2013 - 7:59pm

No they wont do a special edition because of that. More likely they will just rerelease autons seperatly. Mind you they have said they have no current plans to do so

    • MasterKasterborous

      January 3rd, 2013 - 10:12am

IOTD would be an interesting special edition having only have just been released but I think if it’s possible in the future they should re-colour Episode 1.

    • Lachie

      January 3rd, 2013 - 10:19pm

Are there any DVD’s out now that need the better encoding, transform decoding and grading etc.. etc.. or are all releases from late 2006 on perfectly fine. no errors or technical things needed to improve any dvd releases right now l think it would be good for the Restoration Team to make more Documentaries and Extras like on the 3 – Disc Talons of Weng – Chiang Revisitation but obviously not all things can fit there budget

    • Gordon

      January 4th, 2013 - 1:20am

There isnt any stories that need the transform decoder as every colour story that would need it has been revisited (think they started using it round about resurection onwards) . Better encoding started on genesis of the daleks. 2003 to 2005 releases would have slight improvents (and based on talons it would only be slightly visible) but that alone would not be enough of a reason to revisit (in the case of talons it had making of and other extras missing to warrent its revisit)

    • Connor

      January 30th, 2013 - 12:49am

I would like to see a box set with dalek invasion of earth and earthshock! And have for dalek invasion of earth colorised and have new CGI put in it and make it a movie addition! And have also for a special feature for dalek invasion of earth have a new making of and a Peter Cushing movie of the dalek invasion of earth included! Now I no most of u will say that’s never going to happen but it is a great idea! Also for earthshock I want new CGI and maybe also a movie addition included as well as a new making of! I and of cause new cover art for..

    • Connor

      January 30th, 2013 - 12:52am

This DVD release box set! What do you think about my ideas and what would you like in a new special edition box set! With the story’s the dalek invasion of earth and earthshock special edition!

    • Blake

      January 30th, 2013 - 4:35am

Sorry mate but I think that’s not a very good idea having dioe in color, I like them in black and white, maybe a special edition of Earthshock on its own but yeah. When are you coming back to YouTube?

    • Connor

      January 30th, 2013 - 8:15am

Coming back in august! So hopefully it will come soon. Also my channel name will be Killaconzila so yea.

    • gordon

      January 30th, 2013 - 11:19am

It wont happen conner sorry. Dioe in colour would need to be colourised by hand as there are no chroma dots and considering babelcolour took 18 months to do 1 ep of mind of evil it would take too long and be too expensive. It already has new cgi on the 2003 dvd as does earthshock. BBC dont have the rights to the cushing films so no chance of that happening either. Earthshock already has 1 making of it doesnt need another. Do bear in mind the budget for the revisits are smaller than the brand new releases so new cgi isnt affordable

    • gordon

      January 30th, 2013 - 11:30am

There isnt any more alternative cgi special edition stories happening after day of the daleks. They said that 2 years and it has been true so far.

My guess is animation for the missing stories is a better way of using their budget than doing cgi for stories that do exist

  • Doom Dalek

They Need A Special Edition For All The Classics That Haven’t Said 2 Entertain On The Side Of The Cover e.g. The Dalek Invasion Of Earth, The Curse Of Fenric, Ghost Light, The Mind Robber & Many More. They Should Also Release Terror Of The Zygons, The 10th Planet and Galaxy 4 and the rest of the episodes

    • Gordon

      December 31st, 2012 - 10:39am

Doesnt work like that. Its how much picture quality can be improved not 2e branding plus 2e have been rebanded as bbc worldwide consumer products so its pretty pointless doing special editions because of lack of 2e logo. Mind of evil zygons tenth plnet galaxy 4 etc are all due 2013

  • drjakeyoung

    December 30th, 2012 - 5:27pm

from my point of view i can see good points and bad points from putting galaxy 4 on Aztecs SE. The good point is that instead of paying 13 quid for a recon with 1 proper episode and then paying an extra 13 quid for Aztecs SE, all in all, £26 for both of them, but instead it is being put together for £13, 2 in 1 if you like which saves us a heck of a lot money.

    Reply
    • drjakeyoung

      December 30th, 2012 - 5:31pm

the bad point is that if you want galaxy 4 and don’t want the Aztecs, you cant! perhaps it would have been better to see how the sails of reign of terror go and maybe lift the curfew of two episodes to animate and animate the remaining 3 episodes of galaxy 4 and release it separately. I for 1 am not particularly bothered about this as i do not have the original release of this but for fans who do have, i will leave for you to decide.

    • Gordon

      December 30th, 2012 - 9:01pm

If they had waited till the sales of reign of terror went we would be waiting till 2014 to see it. It was put on ztecs as it was the fastest possible way of getting the episode out plus there is no room on reign and apparently there is no room on teth planet either.

    • Connor

      December 30th, 2012 - 9:47pm

I don’t own any doctor who DVDs before 2005 so I don’t own the Aztecs so this release I will be getting for shore! I hope the special features of the old release will be there plus some new ones! The DVD cover looks really good and hopefully next year they will relase another revisitations 4 box set with dalek invasion of earth, mind robber,Earthshock! That would be the best revisitations box set ever! Would u get that revisitations box set and what would u put the
      revisitations 4!

    • drjakeyoung

      December 30th, 2012 - 10:00pm

most people would disagree with me and i can see why, because they don’t really need revisiting, but i would have to say dalek invasion of earth, earthshock and pyramids of mars (and perhaps the two doctors)

    • Gordon

      December 30th, 2012 - 10:01pm

They have said they arent doing any more revisitations box sets. I wouldnt buy any of those as there isnt really much improvement that can be made to picture quality for those plus the extras for those 3 stories are fine as they are

    • celestial toymaker

      December 30th, 2012 - 10:15pm

i would have thought dioe, pyramids of mars and mind robber would have needed revisits at least plus be rid of the blue background on earthshock

    • Gordon

      December 30th, 2012 - 10:27pm

all 3 the picture quality is about as good as you are going to get plus all 3 have pretty good extras plus as i have said previously on the subject dvd cover alone isnt enough to warrent a revisit

    • Connor

      December 30th, 2012 - 10:45pm

I would just be happy if they would relase a special edition of dalek invasion of earth and earthshock. A lot of people would agree that it would be a good special edition release! And It would be good to release even those two story’s in a 2 pack box set! See Inferno didn’t need a special edition relase it had a lot of special features and it was released in 2006! So I think because the dalek invasion of earth and earthshock were released in 2003 they have a more higher chance of getting a special edition! And the covers a crap on the origanal

    • Gordon

      December 31st, 2012 - 9:56am

Inferno does need a special edition over dioe and earthshock and i will explain why.DIOE and earthshock exisist in their original negs. Inferno doesnt. It exists in an ntsc format.Inferno was restored originally for the dvd using reverse standards colarisation(RSC) but this time round they are combining the rsc with ntsc film prints(which wasnt financially or technologicly available in 2006) and will give a much better picture quality (for example just look at the new edition of claws and see how much better ep2 and 3 look over the original dvd)

    • Connor

      December 31st, 2012 - 10:03am

I think they need to do special editions on dalek invasion of earth and earthshock because the cover art on the DVDs are crap and the special features on these DVDs are good but can do with much more special features! Also the reason also for a revisitation is that the release date for both these DVDs was in 2003 and inferno was released in 2006 and I’s getting a special edition! Also it could be released in a 2 pack DVD box set with the dalek invasion of earth and earthshock! What’s you’r thoughts?

    • Gordon

      December 31st, 2012 - 10:03am

Restoration skills for earthshock and DIOE havent really moved forward and picture quality will roughly look the same. The special editions Its not how old the dvd is its how much of a picture quality improvment can be made is how these revisits are chosen.

Plus i know for a fact there isnt a earthshock special edition being planned. Steve roberts said 2 weeks ago that there are currently no plans at the moment to revisit earthshock.

    • Lachlan

      December 31st, 2012 - 12:57pm

l would agree maybe with Earthshock and The Dalek Invasion of Earth but they would have to be fairly later like 2014 and the only reason for that would be financially if the DVD had a better cover it would be good but if they put up more extras combined with the newer collectors not wanting a 10 year old DVD release it could make a good Re-release

    • Lachlan

      December 31st, 2012 - 1:00pm

I’m actually more interested though in the Possible Revisit of the Leisure Hive l haven’t bought the DVD yet and l’m not sure whether too if they could re-release it in 2014 can someone give me any insight into reasons why or why not The Leisure Hive could get a re-release

    • drjakeyoung

      December 31st, 2012 - 1:28pm

i would want leisure hive to be revisited too. i haven’t got that one yet but any insight into why it would be re released i will leave to @gordon to explain 🙂

    • Blake

      January 1st, 2013 - 9:59am

I got the leisure hive for Christmas, I probably wouldn’t recommend it for special edition because the picture quality is pretty good, the features include
      Commentary
A New Beginning- A look at the changes made by incoming producer JNT
From Avalon to Argolia- David Fisher and Christopher H Bidmead look at the writing for the story
Synthesizing Starfields- Sid Sutton and Peter Howell recall the creation of the new title sequence
Leisure Wear- Costume designer talks about her work
      Blue Peter
      Music Only Option
      Photo Gallery & Production Subtitles

    • Gordon

      January 1st, 2013 - 9:14pm

Im with blake on this one. Its a good dvd release. I doubt if they would do a revisit because younger fans that are not happy with a 10 year old dvd as majority of buyers are adults

  • Lachlan

l know this is a longshot but there isn’t any chance of a Special Edition of Genesis of the Daleks is there? l normally wouldn’t ask this kind of question considering its 2006 release date but Genesis, City of Death and a few others from 2005-2006 are no longer available in Australia along with the Davros, and Sontaran Collection Boxset. Luckily l have City of Death but l do not have Genesis…

Babelcolour has put up a new frame from the Mind of Evil http://babelcolour.com/wp-content/gallery/mind-of-evil-frames/moe-09.jpg

he says he has only 9 frames left to colourise, so expect the DVD just after terror of the zygons (in my opinion)

    • Gordon

      December 29th, 2012 - 2:02am

That doesnt include the grading and vidfire which cant be done till its bc has finished ep 1. The deadline for mind of evil to be completed and handed in to bbcww is 8th february. At the earliest we can possibly expect it is about 3rd june (normally things are handed in about 4 months at least in advance for clearance etc). If it is not then probably 5th of august as 24th june and 15th july are taken with zygons and the spearhead blu ray

l expected you to comment fellow Australian Whovian, but it is indeed discontinued from the manufacturer l think sometime around 2010 you couldn’t find any in store anymore l found the Davros Boxset luckily and its awesome now that i have Genesis, l think because the Australian releases were on the border line between 2 Entertain and the non 2 Entertain releases with the older age recommendation logos

That’s weird cause here in nz they don’t seem to be taking away the older releases, the only ones I would say are missing are remembrance (original)
      Caves of androzani (original)
And tomb of the cybermen (original)

    • Lachlan

      December 30th, 2012 - 6:41am

no they have the older releases like Tomb, Robots of Death and Carnival of Monsters etc etc.. but for City of Death and Genesis they must have been discontinued for issues because 2 Entertain didn’t publish or produce those 2 DVD’s.

Has anyone else seen that in this clip at 48 seconds in, there is a small clip of a man who is looking very wooried and has the name LESTERSON on his bage!

Could this be the first clue of an animation of the power of the Daleks for the 50th anniversary???

    • gordon

      December 27th, 2012 - 9:47pm

Could just be test footage. Dan hall said back in october that anything over 2 eps of animation is extremely unlikely. Plus its in the wrong ratio (16:9 widescreen and in colour)

    • WFK DVD Collector 12

      December 28th, 2012 - 8:19am

Well it may not be power of the daleks, but you were right about there being a small section of animation of the first doctor walking in the snow. 🙂

And also if it is the tenth planet it must be test footage like they did with the Invasion.

But why it says LESTERSON on his badge and then when the camera zooms up to his eye the TARDIS is spinning will be a mystery antill the 50th anniversary!

    Audio Commentary
    Doctor Who – Story #018: Galaxy 4
NOTE: this first story of the original show’s third season, starring William Harnell as the 1st Doctor, was among those productions “wiped/junked” by the BBC in the 60s & 70s. In 2011 a 16mm reel of the 3rd episode, “Airlock,” was located and has been restored. It will be included on this DVD release, reportedly along with narration and surviving clips/stills of the 1st, 2nd and 4th episodes “Four Hundred Dawns,” “Trap of Steel” and “The Exploding Planet”

It’s a re-release with more special features and restored to a better quality than the original. Just like all the other re-releases they’ve done over the last 3 years.

It contains episode three of Galaxy Four. That about really though I presume there will be some other other special feature to warrant the term Special Edition.
