BBC Studios announces Season 23 as the next installment in the DOCTOR WHO: THE COLLECTION Blu-ray range

BBC Studios continues to offer Doctor Who fans the opportunity to build their own home archive on Blu-ray. The first jam-packed release for Colin Baker’s Sixth Doctor, Doctor Who: The Collection – Season 23, debuts on 7th October 2019 (Revised from 23rd September.)

In 1985, Doctor Who was taken off the air for an 18 month hiatus. When it returned, it was with an ambitious fourteen-episode adventure, The Trial of a Time Lord. The epic story saw the Doctor on trial for his life, with the court examining his adventures with companion Peri (Nicola Bryant) and looking to his future escapades with new companion Melanie (Bonnie Langford).

This season saw the return of popular villain Sil, along with the Master, the towering robot Drathro and the plant-based Vervoid monsters. With the Inquisitor (Lynda Bellingham) overseeing the proceedings, it was the Valeyard (Michael Jayston) who proved the greatest threat, hiding his own sinister motives for wanting the Doctor’s downfall.

With all episodes newly remastered from the best available sources, this Blu-ray box set also contains extensive and exclusive special features which include:

  • Extended edits – of all fourteen episodes
  • Terror of the Vervoids – four-part standalone edition with updated Fx
  • Immersive 5.1 surround sound & isolated scores – on all 14 broadcast episodes
  • Behind the Sofa – new episodes with Colin Baker, Nicola Bryant, Bonnie Langford, Mark Strickson, Frazer Hines and Matthew Waterhouse
  • The Writers’ Room – Eric Saward, Philip Martin, Christopher H Bidmead & Waly K Daly discuss the ‘Lost’ Season 23
  • The Doctor Who Cookbook Revisited – brave cast members tackle their original recipes from the 1980s official cookbook
  • The Doctor’s Table – join Colin Baker and friends for dinner
  • In Conversation – Matthew Sweet chats to companion Bonnie Langford
  • Unseen studio footage
  • Rare archive treats
  • Convention footage
  • Blu-ray trailer
  • HD photo galleries
  • Scripts, costume designs & more in the PDF Archive

The six-disc box set also includes hours of extensive special features previously released on DVD.

DOCTOR WHO: THE COLLECTION – SEASON 23 stars Colin Baker, Nicola Bryant and Bonnie Langford with Michael Jayston and Lynda Bellingham. Guest appearances include Anthony Ainley, Nalbil Shaban, Joan Sims, Christopher Ryan, Michael Craig, Honor Blackman, Tony Selby and Geoffrey Hughes.

With every blu-ray released, they always had a favourite episode of mine, (S10 Three Doctors S12 Robot, S18 Meglos, S19 Earthshock) but this is disappointing for me, because I’ve never liked these episodes, i might pick it up, probably not though

I’ve read that the SIGNUP10 has worked for some people who paid by paypal, however that means paying for it straight away rather than paying when it finally gets despatched.

thanks but SIGNUP10 was for Season 10, I wonder if SIGNUP23 might work!? It’s a great discount £35.09 instead of £56

SIGNUP10 was actually a “new customer” code which worked over and over but they seem to have cottoned on to people using it multiple tones

Just a question and slightly off topic. Would they incorporate the black and white additional cut footage of Kamelion and Tegans scene into colour and add to as part of that story for ‘The Awakening’ Season 21 Blu-Ray Release?

I’d consider purchasing this if they dropped the price to say £25-27. They can’t justify £40 a pop for Baker’s 14 episode seasons. Really not on.

That’s the price they’ve all been so far.

Robert G. Would you be happy to pay say £80 for Season 1 as that has 42 episodes?

I think not. I hope they keep pricing as it is throughout the range. Some sets you might get more but overall it pays for the whole range.

Dazzleshell. Given that there is so much missing material from the Hartnell/Troughton years (much of which cannot be reconstructed from audio soundtracks) it is highly unlikely that we’ll see complete boxsets for those years. So that’s a bit of a false argument.
I stand by my assertion that the season 23 set is overpriced. However you and others are, naturally, free to pay what you think is appropriate. Given that I have yet to own Trial in any form (I know, I know, and I call myself a fan? Lol) I may consider purchasing this if the price goes down a little. If not, then I think I’ll go for the dvd boxset which can purchased from amazon for around £13, and, when upscaled, probably won’t look that different video wise.

They have very openly stated they intend to do the Hartnell and Troughton series (there’s already more content in there than with McCoy, even in their current condition).

I could have sold you my Trial dvd set. Already gone to the dvd graveyard that is CEX. You are missing out on a lot of great features from the orginal dvd and the new stuff that will be exclusive to the new set. And of course the improved picture quality.

DVD’s upscaled still don’t look as good as a decent quality Bluray upscale though.

As for my example when comparing Seasons. There are 9 episodes missing from Season 1 of Dr.Who. We will get all 42 episodes as no doubt they will put the soundtracks in the sets as they are the complete collection (with or without animation). If they don’t then with 33 episodes it still makes my argument valid. I’d rather pay £35 than say £80 if they priced them in relation to episode count.

Seasons 24, 25 and 26 and then the rumoured ‘Wilderness Years’ sets will be overpriced too then, in your opinion as they have less episodes?

Anyway. Each to their own. 21 Seasons to go…

If Richard Hartley was commissioned to recreate his score for ‘Mindwarp’ for this blu-ray set, is it possible we might also get a complete soundtrack CD of ‘Trial of a Time Lord’ at some point in the future?

Can I ask where the rumour for a wilderness years set has come from? I heard that the movie was going to be on the season 26 set. So what would be on it?

I had never heard it was going to be on Season 26, but I remember suggesting a while back (not necessarily here, but I may have) that a Wilderness Years set would make a lot of sense for upgrading a variety of DVD releases, like the TV movie, Scream of the Shalka, and other Wilderness era media that has been given DVD releases…but now I am seeing people say it is a rumor that may be true. Which I’d love!

I honestly come here for most of my rumors on these releases, so i would also like to know if there are actual sources on that set. I think it makes a lot of sense, but I don’t know where it has been suggested in the real world.

To be honest, I don’t see the “Wilderness Years” as a stand alone box, but season 26 has got only four stories, that’s four discs. Season 18 had 8 discs, so they could just enlarge the 26th boxset and cram the Wilderness stuff on the bonus discs there. I think it would make much more sense.

Here is a question: when it comes to Season 21/22, would you rather they do the seasons as they originally aired, or would you be ok if they put Twin Dilemma on the Season 22 set. Personally I’d rather they just throw the first Colin Baker on with the rest of his first full season, and left Davison’s final season dedicated to him and his Doctor. I can see the view of purists, but if it all gets released, what does it matter?

I feel the same about the transition from Hartnell to Troughton, add Hartnell’s final few stories onto Season 3 in order to focus in on his final years, and then let Season 4 showcase the launch of Troughton. Obviously those sets would be strange anyhow with so much still missing and needing to be reconned or animated. Though I can easily see the potential of talking about the transition by releasing the set as originally aired.

At any rate I definitely prefer Twin Dilemma along with Season 22. It seems like it would just fit better there, as that story nicely leads into Attack of the Cybermen. Thoughts?

I would not mind splitting seasons to keep the Doctors together. I base my position on keeping the aesthetics of the box sets consistent. It may look strange to have so many box sets that look (in my opinion) very nice and only include one Doctor and various villains and then two box sets with multiple doctors squeezed on them. I would want 1-2 stories with their respective Doctors and change the wording of how the set is named potentially or just treat the extra episodes like bonus episodes (a la the K9 episode on Tom Baker’s final season). I think the wording change would be more feasible for the Region 1 sets (e.g., Colin Baker: the Complete Seasons 21 and 22).

      June 26th, 2019 - 3:47am

Yeah in the US they are labeled with “Tom Baker – Season 1” and “Tom Baker – Season 7” and so forth. To me this actually makes more sense then the traditional numbering system, especially as the revival confuses matters. Why not retroactively label each season by Doctor?

This is another reason I would like it this way, as what I would purchase would be labeled “Colin Baker – Season 1” and in that I would want his debut story (as abysmal to watch as I find that particular story). I also think it may be what they do purely because in America they are labeling them this way. It almost makes less sense to call a set “Peter Davison – Season 3” and then have a Colin Baker story mixed in.

They’d get away with it if they release 22 before they release 21, because if you release 21 without it’s final story of the season people would probably complain more, whereas if they did include on a previous set, they’d be less likely to howl at the moon over it. Though a howling many will do in any case probably.

      June 26th, 2019 - 6:23am

It’s been pretty much confirmed by those working on the sets that twin dilemma will be part of season 21/Peter Davison season 3rd season as it is still a part of peter’s 3rd season regardless of him not being in the story. All it needs is a sticker on the box saying includes Colin baker’s debut story and it’s good

    • Anonymous

      June 26th, 2019 - 6:35am

All they need to do for covers is have half of each relevant doctors face to convey the regeneration. There is no point splitting up series just to make everyones life easier. Besides, extra features about series as a whole would not work if the series were split.

    • bushboy

      June 26th, 2019 - 11:15am

I think definitely include The Twin Dilemma on the season 22 set.
As far as the cover art is concerned simply use Peter Davison’s Doctor as the main image and include Colin’s Doctor in the smaller montage with the other characters and monsters from the season.
Also as far as special features go, how about including a version of The Caves of Androzani part 4 with the proper closing title sequence for Colin’s era?
The image of Colin’s face stuck over top of Peter’s in the broadcast version looks terrible and I’ve never understood why they didn’t just use the new version as presumably they had it ready for Colin’s first full episode the following week.

    • dazzleshell

      June 26th, 2019 - 12:26pm

For me I’d prefer them to be as broadcast which as I understand is what we will be getting.

Even with ‘The Twin Dilemma’ the Season 21 cover image should still be Davison as it is his full final Season. Colin might feature as smaller image though where enemies usually go.

The same with Season 4. Although there are 2 Hartnell adventures it is Troughtons first full season.

And if there is ‘The Wilderness Years’ set I hope the TV movie is included so we get another great cover featuring McGann as the main focus.

      June 26th, 2019 - 1:34pm

On back of my last comment things might be different for the USA releases. They might unfortunately have to wait a little bit longer due to the way they have numbered them.

For example, if UK gets Season 21 first theirs will be missing ‘The Twin Dilemma’. So will have to wait for Colin Baker Season 1. If UK gets Season 22 first they may have to wait til Season 21 is also available in UK before USA gets Davison Season 3 and Colin Season 1.

So – what do you think the future of these sets would be like? Going on the rumours, I haven’t heard anything for them doing the new series, Sarah-Jane adventures or torchwood – all of which I would really love to see but for now- this I what I imagine it may look like (this is totally subjective)

    Thus far…
    2018
    July – Tom Baker s12
    Dec – Peter Davison s19
    2019
    March – Tom Baker s18
    July – Jon Pertwee s10
    Sep – Colin Baker s23
    FUTURE…
    Dec – Sylvester McCoy s26
    2020
Feb/mar – Tom Baker s17 (based on lalla ward)
    Mar – Faceless ones
Jul – Jon Pertwee s8 (teased in an announcement)
Sep – Wilderness Years ( featuring Paul mcGann and scream of the shalka and all that stuff)
What does everyone else think dec19 onward?
Anyone one have any thoughts on a wilderness years, Sarah Jane , torchwood, new series sets??

The next Tom stuff is meant to be Season 14…don’t forget, they’re doing as many extras as they can whilst the actors are still with us so don’t take teasers about special features as confirmation that the season is coming soon. Remember, for the DVD range extras could be made years in advance (such as the Anthony Ainley commentary on Keeper of Traken, released in 2007 when he died in 2004).

I’d really like to think that seasons 1 to 6 are left until animations are done and I don’t care how long it takes personally… the extras could be done beforehand with actors and crew members who are still with us like behind the sofas with William Russell, Carole Ann Ford, Peter Purves, Maureen o’Brien, Anneke Wills, Frazer Hines and Wendy Padbury especially!

    • James

      June 25th, 2019 - 7:57pm

I think a Wilderness years set is a couple of years off at least.
Next year I think as we have had Tom’s first and last, I think we will get a middle season such as season 15 around Feb/March. I think we will get Season 21 from Peter in the middle of the year and Season 9 from Jon in the autumn, as that one will be relatively easy to restore for bluray. Only one that will cause a challenge really is The Time Monster. I think we’ll get Season 2 or 6 to bring the 60s to the range in December.

    • Gordon

      June 25th, 2019 - 8:34pm

14 is the big rumour for after 26 and considering it came from the same sources that got previous sets right it’s hard to go against it.

Enough time will have passed since season 19 to do another Peter Davison season. I’d go for 20 because 21 and 22 extras are so connected with Colin and Nicola extras will most likely get done at the same time and it will be probably too soon for another Colin.

Next year will be Patrick troughton’s 100th birthday perfect time to have a set out at some point next year. Season 6 would be the obvious choice.

Jon should be due another so I’d guess at season 11. Regardless of teaser season 8 is a long way off. After season 10 11 is the next easiest season to do.

If as suggested all the seasons are to be released on Blu Ray by 2025.Then surely they will what to release one sixties season a year. Then there is the question of how much sixties seasons will cost. There are 44 episodes in season 6 . Will they cost the same as season 10? I notice they season 23 is the same price as10, despite having 12 less episodes.

The number of stories is 7? The Peter Davison Season 19 has 7 stories and was an 8 disc set priced around £39 to £40. So the short answer would be a “Yes” Prof.

    • dazzleshell

      June 24th, 2019 - 9:30pm

I see the price per set remaining the same throughout the range even if 1 season has more episodes and another has less.

This spreads the cost for the fans.
Obviously we will get some people upset that a season they class as inferior is the same price as one of their favourites but that’s normal in Whoville.

    • Gordon

      June 24th, 2019 - 12:14am

All depends on which seasons they tackle. Some require more work than others. Especially when it’s the black and white seasons that have 39 plus episodes a season. They might not have time to 4 seasons a year if 1 of them is a massive 40 episode season. The plan is to do 3-4 a year so I wouldn’t put it as a guarantee that it’s going to carry on as 4 every year.

I’d have also thought that if they were going to continue these into the new series, then it would make much more sense to have a release with McGann on the spine. The alternative would be him being bundled in with McCoy in season 26 meaning a complete collection with the new series would skip straight from 7 to 9 on the spines which I would have thought would be less attractive to collectors.

    • The Flying Shark

      June 23rd, 2019 - 8:18pm

They really do-it’s not just the packaging, it’s the content. When they finish the classics in 2025 (I heard this as a realistic estimate), Series 1, and the extras from it, will be 20 years old. There are a lot of retrospective pieces they could do on it, with cast and crew who couldn’t/didn’t want to speak back then, plus they can be less biased as the BBC would never have allowed such a big show to be released with individuals being critical in the extras. There are lots of extra news pieces, continuity and programmes that can be included (full length Confidentials at last?) and not to mention that, from Series 5 on, it cannot be denied there have been less effort put into the extra features. We could have the next time trailers restored! Personally, I want commentaries, behind the sofas and a making of for every new series episode, but perhaps that’s just me. They deserve the love and respect of the 20th century series.

    • Robert Sienicki

      June 24th, 2019 - 11:17am

I think they won’t do TV Movie. It’s not a season, and they already did a 2 disc Blu-Ray edition on it few years ago, so they won’t have much more to add. They will most likely only focus on season 1-26 and that’s it. The New Who is released on Blu-Ray in standard version and in Steelbooks and I feel like that is enough.

    • TheWHOlegacy

      June 24th, 2019 - 2:13pm

I think they’ll end up doing a wilderness years boxset. Probably be released if there’s a major gap between the releases of the season box sets. Could have it include; TV Movie, More than 30 years, scream of Shalka, Doctor who @ 40, Doctor Who night, Curse of the Fatal Death, Paul McGann Shada, Realtime and the other early animated webisodes

    • Gordon

      June 24th, 2019 - 2:50pm

The 2 disc blu Ray was in the wrong speed and upscaled wrong. The 2nd disc wasn’t even a blu ray disc. It gives the restoration team the chance to right the wrongs of the blu ray release (they weren’t involved in the original blu Ray release). They could do a documentary covering the actual story with the original cast. Seven year itch is good but doesn’t really cover the story that much. A documentary covering Paul’s big finish work. A Matthew sweet in conversation with Paul. Behind the sofa. There is plenty they can do

I love the idea of an edited four part version of Terror of the Vervoids as a stand-alone story. It’s by far the best story in the season. I only hope that when they come to release Season 17, they release a version of Shada featuring all six cliffhangers. ‘Terror of the Vervoids’ is Pip and Jane Bakers best script for Doctor Who in my opinion. Chibnall criticized Pip and Jane’s Vervoids story back in 1986. But I’d get more enjoyment watching a Vervoid story than a Pting story.

It is a real shame he never got many TV parts, even more so after Doctor Who. Hes a fine actor and he has played the judge role before, I think i saw him on one of those daytime soaps or something. Hes as good as Peter Davison and ‘He’ has never been short of Tv work over the years (all Creatures, A very Peculiar Practice, Campion, At home..Braithwaites and more recently Gentleman Jack). Maybe she should ask him for his Agents number. Hes wasted years in the acting wilderness. But he,ll always be old sixie and has done so much good audio work for Big Finish.

Mr Baker has done quite a lot of tv,more single episodes of dramas, but he also done a lot of very good theatre work, along with with Pantomimes. (Been lucky enough to see a few of these). Also big finish and other doctor who spin offs , so may be it was more out of choice to juggle lots of different things than just a drawn out drama that would tied him down. He’s a very great and versatile actor, as he shown through the years.

    • The ergon

      June 20th, 2019 - 1:08pm

I think some of the stuff he has done has been simply just to keep the money/work coming in regardless of choice. If the phones ringing in showbusiness you can,t afford to turn down anything and its a case of ‘I,ll do it’. Peter Davison once remarked he was a very frustrated actor. Its a shame he doesn,t do something more prolific, but he is a good all rounder and i agree he does do a lot of theatre which hes probably more comfortable with. A very fine actor.

Disc 5 will probably be the new version of vervoids and disc 6 will be the special features disc. Trying to fit 3 different versions of terror of the vervoids might make the disc compressed so it works out better to spread the content out.

Yeah what I mean is why are the delaying the release in the USA, as opposed to keeping it closer to the UK release date. The blu ray box set budget pays for these features and the people involved with these sets make the new extras in hd and it to specifically to be seen in hd

    • Anonymous

      June 19th, 2019 - 12:24am

I am pretty sure that there is a much higher demand for bluray than dvd. Dvd is a format which has been around for 20 odd years and it is on it’s last legs I feel. The picture quality on dvds on big tvs of 50inch and above is generally terrible even with upscaling when compared to that of bluray so I do not think dvd will be around for much longer. It’s definitely not the most in demand format of the two

    • Kenny

      June 19th, 2019 - 5:44am

The truth is DVD still outsells blu-ray, but neither is selling like they once did. Blu-ray is pivoting into a collector’s market really. Most people stream or just buy digital copies, so to sell physical media they have to make it worthwhile for the hardcore collectors that are really who will be the main market going forward. Blu-ray offers superior sound and video on media that can be HD.

While classic Doctor Who is rarely going to look HD, the larger capacity space on the discs mean they can fit more information on a blu-ray disc than a DVD. So to get all those extra features jammed on, and minimize shelf space, blu-ray makes more sense.

    • The ergon

      June 19th, 2019 - 10:50am

There are only certain instances where the picture quality isn,t that great on DVD but that was how these were shot originally anyway and upscaling on these from what i,ve seen, are improved slightly as one would expect but hardly groundbreaking. You can watch the DVDs on any HD TV in original 4:3 scale by simply altering picture mode on a standard remote. The seller are those extras. Those updated SFX and updated perspectives on these stories make the sales worth buying for hardcore/New collectors. The Blu-Ray series has just come too late in the game for me and all the problems from 12 onward that occured turned me off. I think maybe the next step would be to stream these in the future with added content should it become available to buy this way.

It’s worth noting that the audio quality is far better on Blu Rays than DVDs, so there is still benefit to upgrading even if the visuals are limited. It isn’t quite the same as just playing a DVD on an HD TV.
