BBC Studios announces Peter Davison’s inaugural series as the next installment in the DOCTOR WHO: THE COLLECTION Blu-ray range

Today BBC Studios is pleased to announce Doctor Who Season 19 as the next release in the Doctor Who: The Collection range. Season 19 is Peter Davison’s first series as the Fifth Doctor and this edition follows the success of Tom Baker’s first season on Blu-ray. To be released on the 19th November 2018, this collector’s edition also has a limited run.

The title will be available to pre-order from HMV and Amazon from tomorrow.

Peter Davison joined the long running BBC series in 1982, replacing Tom Baker as the Doctor. His first season bursts with the fresh energy and breathless excitement that would come to define his era. Across seven classic adventures, the Doctor and his companions Tegan, Nyssa and Adric face off against The Master, the terrifying Mara, the Terileptils, the Plasmatons, Monarch and the revamped Cybermen, making a triumphant return to the series in one of the programme’s all-time classics.

The Limited Edition Blu-ray includes brand new ‘Special Features’ exclusive to this set include: Five new ‘Making-Of’ documentaries for Castrovalva, Four To Doomsday, Black Orchid, Earthshock and Time-Flight, surround sound mixes for Kinda and Earthshock, an Extended Version of Black Orchid Part One, rare studio footage from Castrovalva, Four To Doomsday, Earthshock and Time-Flight, updated special effects for Castrovalva, seven more editions of Behind The Sofa and a newly-shot one-hour interview Peter Davison In Conversation with Matthew Sweet, and much more.

The eight-disc box set also includes the Peter Davison/David Tennant mini-episode Time Crash, plus hours of extensive special features previously released on DVD.

All 26 episodes are being remastered from scratch by Peter Crocker and Mark Ayres. With this season’s original 16mm film elements still in existence, the location material can be presented in true HD, with studio material upscaled. Lee Binding is again providing stunning packaging design and Pete McTighe has written extensive booklet notes and is the content consultant for the title. Doctor Who: The Collection is executively produced for BBC Studios by Russell Minton.

DOCTOR WHO: THE COLLECTION – SEASON 19 includes the following stories from 1982:

Castrovalva (Four episodes); Four To Doomsday (Four Episodes); Kinda (Four Episodes); The Visitation (Four Episodes); Black Orchid (Two Episodes); Earthshock (Four Episodes); Time-Flight (Four episodes)

The rrp of season 12 was £49.99 and dropped to £39.99

It will drop again as £54.99 is the rrp and no-one ever really pays that

It was always going to be more expensive as it’s got 2 more discs

Also, Davison’s first season is longer than Baker’s. So, if the price reduction is the same as last time, you’ll be paying another £4.99 for 6 episodes more.

When I was at Forbidden Planet in London the guy said that Season 12 had been re-called and they would be releassing it again with an extra 1000 copies due to the demand. I really hope that is the case, I have been a fan of Doctor Who since I was 3 in 2005 and I have watched hardly any Classics, I bought a few last year but decided to keep on hold because I knew that they would be released on Blu-Ray, and when they finally are I miss out on Season 12, Will be checking constantly to Pre-Order Season 19 straight away!

This is not true in the slightest- bbc are offering replacement discs with proof of purchase but there has been no recall and this is officially sold out. This is why when people see “limited edition” they shouldn’t dismiss it and if they want it, get it immediately

It’s because they repressed the faulty Revenge disc again by mistake, so they stopped sending them out while they press the fixed version

There is a problem with the revenge replacement disc. The sontaran disc is fine. They accidentally sent another faulty version of revenge instead of the fixed version. My guess is that they started sending them then they stopped when they realised their mistake. There is no point sending any more if they are the wrong disc. Got an email after I complained and the new fixed replacement is due in less than 2 weeks so you should receive both discs then. At least they are rectifying their mistake. Other dvd companies would not bother (studio canal yes you)

      Gordon,

I received my replacement discs for Season 12 last Saturday. Besides the misspelling of Michael’s Wisher’s name on the credits, what were the other issues on the Revenge disc?

Also, shall I email and complain as you have done or do you think they’ll automatically send out the corrected Revenge disc to me even though I’ve already received one?

      Many thanks.

    • Gordon

      August 22nd, 2018 - 10:43pm

Send an email back saying you received your replacement disc of revenge and it’s still faulty. They will send an email back asking to resend your adress.

The faults on revenge are; Revenge 1 – misspelling of Michael Wisher in credits
      – Revenge 3 – Ian Marter credit overlapping with the subsequent credit
      – Revenge 4 – overlapping frames at end of episode, noticeable as Sarah and Harry walk to the TARDIS.
      – Walls promo PDF – accidentally left off

No I thought they were enjoyable and a bit of fun. I just wish they changed the guests around and were a bit shorter. I didn’t mind having Tom Sadie and Philip just wished they had other people do a couple of stories. Will be interesting to see who they get for the guest sofa this time around as it looks like the main sofa will be Peter Sarah Janet and matthew

Fyi the following stories have film inserts that can be scanned in hd:

    Castrovalva
    Visitation
    Black Orchid
    Earthshock
    Timeflight

Can’t wait to see the Peter Davison interview especially after how good the Tom one was with matthew sweet. Hopefully it means we will get Colin Sylvester and maybe even Paul down the line in future sets. Great having making ofs for castrovalva four to doomsday black orchid and timeflight as they were missing on the dvds. Bit surprised earthshock is getting 1 after how good putting the shock into earthshock is but still interested in what they do with it.

I hear Four to Doomsday, Black Orchid and Earthshock will have a new set of subtitles done by Martin Wiggins, David Brunt and Paul Scoones respectively, Kinda gets an overhaul and the others have a few tweaks. Plus the pdfs will be at least 722 pages of production documentation, 1906 pages of script, 55 pages of Radio Times cuttings plus a few extra bits and pieces.

Probably seeing as they now have a larger idea how many copies they will likely sell. Season 12 did better than anybody expected. Doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to be easier to grab a copy this time round. There will still only be a certain number available on release date. After the trouble of trying to nab a copy after release date more people may want to preorder this time round. Plus after the success of season 12 some may bulkbuy in attempt to fleece fans when it sells out

I don’t believe so. Streaming is the future so physical releases are on the way out, except for limited releases such as these. As I have all the DVDs anyway I’m not getting this, but if I did want to, the option is there on Amazon Video with all the extras too.

The version on amazon prime is more expensive than the pre order price doesn’t have the optional effects production subtitles pdfs or commentaries. It’s also only available in sd which would be a step down for season 19 over the blu Ray as 5 out of the 7 stories will have film elements scanned in hd for the blu ray

According to one of the Restoration Team (who put together much of the DVD range for 2|entertain / BBC Studios and now curate this range) the are two factors involved here. One, they had to commit to a certain retailer that the first print run of every new release in this new classic BluRay range will always come in this deluxe cardboard package format. And two, they will likely keep on using that packaging for any re-prints so long as they are confident of selling the minimum viable print run of 2000 copies to amazon, HMV etc quickly so they don’t sit in a warehouse accruing shelf rent and so diminishing the profit margins waiting for a retailer to take another chunk of that batch. Then, if they reach the point where they think there’s enough demand to do another run of over 500 but not enough to justify 2000 more copies – they’ll move to plastic case format. But the only ‘guarantee’ of having a consistently packaged collection is to always go for the first print run when each one is released – the above scenario could result in a particular season never seeing a plastic case even when others before do/have done.

Apparently that depends on the demand levels each time they consider second a subsequent print runs of a set. If they think they can quickly interest retailers in another 2000, then they say they’ll keep it in card packaging (which needs that number as a minimum print run). But if they decide there is still some demand but they estimate it falls between 500 and 2000 copies, they’ll switch it to a plastic box. There is no guarantee a release will ever see a plastic box run, though, they might just let it go OOP after a few runs of 2000 in card boxes. There *is* an assurance that at least the first run of every release in this range will come In the special packaging format – they had to commit to that to a particular retailer who made it a condition of stocking/supporting Classic Who Blu Ray.

Respectfully disagree. Besides earthshock you have castrovalva which is very good kinda which is extremely underrated and complex visitation which is a lot of fun. Sure black orchid is pretty much filler but it’s still worth a watch. Time flight is nonsense but it’s cheesy enjoyable nonsese four to doomsday is the only story i find a struggle to get through. For me earthshock is weak, story is silly and despite the cybermen looking great I didn’t like the actors doing there own dialogue as straightaway that means a more emotional performance rather than what the cybermen should be like. I love visitation, and I have a soft spot for four to doomsday. Kinda is decent along with black orchid and having just watched time flight again I have to say I rather enjoyed it! Yes, there is no reason whatsoever for the master to be in diguise, yes the sets are a bit naff but the story was alright if a little ambitious on the budget, something that effected a lot of jn-t’s run as producer. Personally though I won’t be buying this as the dvds are fine, but for those who want this I hope there are no faults this time!

Castrovalva is so very dull, Four & Black are boring rubbish. Love The Visitation novel but the TV Story is so badly directed it sucks any enjoyment from it (the terrible cliffhanger of companions screaming at a brick wall?!) Id totally forgotten about Kinda which kinda says it all, it very overrated. Earthshock is great, TimeFlight stinks – it deserves the title of worst Who story. Just not a fan of the Davison era, its my least fav – a weak Doctor, awful companions, badly written and made story’s, there`s not much to enjoy!

It’s all subjective. For example, I could care less about a lot of Tom Baker episodes. In my view, Robot was horrible, The Planet of Evil was boring, The City of Death is mediocre, The Seeds of Doom is basically just the Thing from Another World (with more of the parasitism of the original story), and I hardly even remember Genesis of the Daleks. I never even bothered to finish either the Deadly Assassin (the overacting was through the roof) or The Talon’s of Weng-Chiang (the questionable depiction of Chinese people is a HUGE turn off). For me, Series 18-23 are probably the most interesting the show has to offer. I couldn’t be happier that 19 and 18 are the next ones up.

Looks like being another cracking set. Always thought this was the perfect 2nd release considering its the season with the most film elements exist and 4 stories don’t have their own making of Definitely picking this up. Yes season 12 had a couple of faults but it was the first release.. Hopefully quality control is tighter this time round. Would rather chance getting it now than waiting to see if it has faults and then I can’t get it for a reasonable price. If there are faults it will get fixed so no worries

I don’t understand why these box sets are of limited runs, I get it might encourage fans to rush out to buy them so they get them but as doctor 909 says undecided weather to get it as doesn’t have 12, so surely make more so fans can easily get complete collection.

It’s the packaging that is limited. Season 12 is currently out of stock as there are errors getting fixed. No point restocking them while they have errors. The big question is if the 2nd print run will be the limited packaging will have the limited packaging or normal packaging

Don’t really like four to doomsday, timeflight is okish, but the other stories are quite strong.

      Castrovalva: very good
Four to doomsday: four to snoozeday very dull
Kinda: extremely underrated and complex (for me it’s almost on par with earthshock personally)
      Visitation: good
Black orchid: feels almost like filler but still worth a watch
      Earthshock: excellent
Timeflight: nonsense but cheesy enjoyable nonsense

I liked the recursive occlusion part of castrovalva and you kind of sympathise with the castrovalvans towards the end but there was a lot of filler and larking about before they get there to help with the recuperation. The visitation i,ve always liked for the John savident comical turn at the beginning alone and its a shame they run out of budget for Timeflight. Laughable for all the wrong reasons. Was it too much trouble to bother with effects for this story?

Do you think the updated special effects from the Earthshock DVD will also be included?

missed out on the Season 12 one so still undecided as to whether to get this one. If Season 12 pops up anywhere for a sensible price then I’ll probab get them. Anyone know anywhere selling it for a decent price?

The special effects for castrovalva needed updating but more so for Timeflight i would have thought.

I got the season12 boxset to compare from HMV to compare but as it had the faults sent it back. The effects for revenge of the cybermen were good but i found the picture quality less impressive than the dvds on some. I also had a problem with the book style packaging. I would have liked the option if all faults were amended to release in full plastic case. These are fragile and prone to wear and tear. Saying that i am in the minority and i,m sure fans will clamber for these when released for preorder tomorrow. After the last time i,m sure theywill have rectified any faults beforehand.
