Doctor Who Power of the Daleks Animation DVD

Available to order from www.amazon.co.uk

Also available to order from www.hmv.com

Doctor Who: The Power of the Daleks, the brand new animated version of the much celebrated lost story, is set to be a must buy for every Doctor Who fan with a wealth of extra material available with both the BBC Store and DVD releases.

This highly anticipated adventure will be released on BBC Store on Saturday 5th November, exactly 50 years to the minute after it was first transmitted on BBC One at 5.50pm on Saturday 5th November, 1966, with DVD following on Monday 21st November.

Extra treats fans can look forward to include commentaries and surviving footage, together with a documentary feature which stars the original cast and crew. Other bonus features include a gallery of artwork from the animation, and original shooting script. There’s even a rare chance to hear the original Dalek recordings from the show.

It’s one of the Doctor’s most celebrated adventures and yet no complete film recordings of The Power of the Daleks are known to have survived. The master negatives were destroyed in an archive purge in 1974.

The six half-hour episodes feature the regeneration, or as it was then called ‘renewal’, of First Doctor William Hartnell into Second Doctor Patrick Troughton, as the Time Lord and his companions Polly (Anneke Wills) and Ben (Michael Craze) do battle with the Daleks on the planet Vulcan.

Animator Charles Norton says: ‘It’s been wonderful to have been able to track down so much rare and previously unreleased material and I hope that fans enjoy the excellent package we’ve been able to assemble.’

You can also register your interest in the BBC Store download at www.bbcstore.com

You’d hope if this sells well that the logical next step would be for them to start pumping out the other missing Dalek/Cyberman stories, so with luck we’d get to see…

    The Daleks Masterplan
    Evil Of The Daleks
    The Wheel In Space

But I’m just thrilled that we get to see this finally released. Hugely happy about this!

That’ll be one to look forward to for sure, but if Power does herald the beginning of a new run of animated Classics, then from a marketing strategy viewpoint, I’d imagine they might want to get a few more of the ‘big hitter’ villain stories out first, to get some early attention and drum up a few casual (or at least, ‘soft’ more casual fan) sales – I’d probably expect the likes of Wheel in Space and Evil of the Daleks next before they move on to one-off villain stories like The Celestial Toymaker and The Crusade. But hopefully they’ll sell well enough to do them all.

The Curade is actually one of the most important stories, Ian get knighted and they have two of the episodes of the story already, Definitely should do it along with another DVD release like wheel in space or the faceless ones or celitel
toymaker and when added up it would be a similar budget to this stories animation

The interests of BBC-America (who commissioned this one) seem to tend towards completely lost serials. This way they can have a homogeneous widescreen viewing experience consisting of stories anybody has even seen a glimpse of for decades.

I think “The Macra Terror” or “Fury from the deep” could be next. Another candidate could be”The Daleks’ Master Plan” (with or without “Mission to the unknown”), because it’s a Dalek story. If they choose this one, they might animate all episodes including the existing ones (for that homogeneous experience).

I would like to have all lost episodes animated, but I think, they tend towardsa this completely lost ones

IMO I really think that moving forward that this (in regards to Power of the Daleks) is the direction the BBC should take in regards to further releases…do completely missing stories as animation…Marco Polo & The Macra Terror would make great candidates…cinema releases…5.1 soundtracks…oh yeah!!!

Super excited for this. I put this on the top of my Christmas list. Now I can have a Dalek year. So the big question now is which one for Hartnell? The Daleks, the Dalek Invasion of Earth or the Chase?

Difficult choice The Daleks is properly the most important episode in Doctor Who history. But the Dalek Invasion of Earth is also a classic though. Id reccomend watching The Daleks first because The Doctor and Ian have a conversation in TDIOE that links to The Daleks.

I do sincerely hope everyone buys the DVD, or the downloads from BBC Store, or both!…I certainly will buy both. Judging by comments made in the recent Doctor Who Magazine, If the release of an animated ‘Power of the Daleks’ does well, then the option to do more missing adventures animated is a very likely possibility.

I think ‘The Celestial Toymaker’ would work really well as animation. As it’s a hugely surreal and quirky story. So I would choose that one. ‘The Celestial Toymaker’ deserves a re-appraisal. A story once regarded as a classic, and over the years has seen it’s classic status collapse into rubbish. Unfair in my opinion.

I would expect an animation cover instead l mentioned Tea Lady Designs in a comment on the official facebook page on whether or not he did the artwork for the DVD cover and he said no, so either BBC Animation are going to do it themselves (which would be pretty easy since they have all the assets to the animation) or they are planning on using some other cover artist.

Interestingly, it’s animated by BBC Studios which is a fairly new studio. However, I wish they got Planet 55 to do the animation because in my opinion the animation here doesn’t look as smooth as The Tenth Planet and The Moonbase’s animation. Still excited though!

It really is too early to judge the animation until we have seen the first episode. I think judging by the trailers it looks very good. I would suggest people sign up to BBC Store and purchase the animated Dads Army episode. That will certainly give you a good idea of what the overall style will be close to.

Good to see another trailer. This looks like being a great reconstruction. Worthy for such a highly regarded missing classic.
