I highly doubt that. The downloads are The Starship of Theseus, Tidal Wave and The Boundless Sea (along with a random BBC audio download). The CD selection is either a companion chronicle or a destiny of the doctor release.

Another part of the picture, basically you’d need two sets to make the image

      September 20th, 2018 - 11:20pm

No in fact – rather like the Star Wars cards of my long lost youth, the back of the four a5 art cards form one big A3 picture but it’s a different painting altogether from the four individual character portraits on the front (same artist and same style though, it’s a very similar image as was on one side of the poster last issue). But you don’t need two sets to make up that picture.

Depends, if you like big finish then yes, I pretty much bought it just for that the audios. The CD is random and will either be a companion chronicle or Destiny of the Doctor. The downloads are each worth about £10 each and aren’t available as single purchases. the CD is between £3-8 so it’s good value, all the other stuff is pretty meh.

I managaged to get the special edition from W.H.Smiths. The free Big Finish in my pack is Trouble in Paradise. A Colin Baker story performed by Nicola Bryant. Pleased as I don’t already have it. It IS in a correct Plastic CD case.
The other gifts are not much use. At 58 I don’t want postcards or art cards. The so called souvenir guide is little more than a few words from each cast member. Hardly interviews. The magazine is pretty poor tbh. Not interested in Cos-Play or cartoon strips. Nice bit on the Tardis control room though.

I managed to get the special release in WHSmith much to my surprise. Well worth the 9.99 price tag. I was really happy with the CD. I got one of the companion chronicles cds. ‘The Sentinels of the new Dawn’ read by the late Caroline John. It’s a perfect CD for me as I’ve been re-watching the brilliant Season 7 recently, and have always greatly enjoyed Jon Pertwee’s 3rd Doctor alongside Caroline John’s Liz Shaw.

It has 14 pages in and it has Moments in Time where it just tells you all the things that happend from the 13th Doctor announcement up until the first episode and it has an interview with Jodie, Bradley, Tosin and Mandip but in my opinion though its not the best thing that the deluxe edition came with

To me the £9.99 version isn’t worth it. The poster would get binned, the art cards have that child friendly cartoony look to them, the downloads i wouldn’t bother with and the episode guide will be all over the internet by Thursday afternoon.

I suppose what it inevitably comes down to is the souvenir guide. If that’s like the one with issue 500 then it will be a shame to miss it but if it’s just 16 pages then it matters not.

I haven’t had this magazine for a few years, so to have a choice between paying £5.99 for a magazine with two episode titles/descriptions or paying like £2 or a small bit more for the Radio Times, which usually has the episode guide for a whole series in it, I’ll definitely be choosing the Radio Times over this.

There are 4 downloads, 3 of which I have identified: The Starship of Theseus (from The Eighth Doctor: The Time War 1), Tidal Wave (from UNIT: Assembled) and The Boundless Sea (from The Diary of River Song Series 1).

The CDs that are in the illustration are: The Time Machine (Destiny of the Doctor no.11), Trouble in Paradise (Destiny of the Doctor no.6), The Invasion of E-Space (a Companion Chronicle), Fear of the Daleks (another Companion Chronicle) and yet another companion chronicle which I am yet to identify.

As a subscriber I hate this Deluxe Addition idea, I feel subscribers should get more but instead we get less. I didnt want a textless covesr but didn’t get a choice. The Magazines tone is increasingly catering for a certain smug know it all youth audience – yes thats you Time Team!. Ive been buying the magazine since 86 and have always loved it but more and more Im having reasons to fall out of love with it and stop subscribing. To pay and additional £10 for something you already get but just with a couple of extra interviews, posters and an old BF CD is taking the mick!

      I agree
I saw a comment from ages ago (probably on here) saying that if you buy the magazine you’re paying the wages for them so as much as much as there’s stuff I love … I don’t read it all and I don’t have time to nowadays

I think I’ll probably cancel mine

    • T Slader

      September 17th, 2018 - 6:43pm

Totally agree. I’ve been getting it since issue one but the smugness you focus on and the dressing up aren’t my thing. Haven’t read the comic strip for ages.., sadly maybe growing out of it. Still new fans are the programmes life blood and if that’s what they want then onwards.

I’m not sure I understand the comment about paying their wages if you buy the magazine. As a commercial business, sales of their product would surely be how they pay their staff, office rent, overheads etc?

    • Kevin225

      September 21st, 2018 - 6:41pm

The latest issue is offering an Amazon voucher as a competition prize for feedback on the magazine. I suggest that anyone with comments on the recent run of issues perhaps that forum might be worth pursuing. For those 30/40+’s, there is perhaps little value in complaining about Cosplay and the ‘know-it-all’ Time Team. We were young once! In my opinion it is the lightweight nature of a lot of the content across the board that is a more relevant concern. Gary Gillatt’s editorship produced a largely excellent run of issues with no concurrent TV show. There was plenty of interesting things to say then. What about now with >10 new seasons etc. And who cares about articles about musicians loosely basing their music on the programmer!!

    • Kevin225

      September 21st, 2018 - 6:56pm

Whilst it doesn’t appeal to me – the smugness/dumbing down and the Cosplay is kind of understandable. What I have an issue with is the superficial and tangential nature of a lot of the content (e.g articles on musicians who base their work on connections to Doctor Who). Gary Gillatt’s editorship has a lot of interesting things to say when there was no new TV show for pretty much 15 years. The current team should be spoilt for choice!

I read a comment from one of the DWM team that WHS are not just offered it by Panini – they are contributing some of the initial production costs (co-investing) so however frustrating it is for some (subscribers who have no option to just top up to get the extras, or regular readers who may not have the extra few quid to spare), you can understand why there’s no incentive for WHS to let Panini also send it to customers Mrs who aren’t contributing to WHS coffers.

From the looks of the cover, the downloads are an episode each from The Diary of River Song, The Eighth Doctor: The Time War and UNIT: Assembled (if you look into it you can probably find out the exact episodes from the covers you can see), plus an unknown BBC audiobook.
The CD is random from a 1hr release from the Destiny of the Doctor or Companion Chronicles ranges (the Companion Chronicles visible on the cover are from series 1 and 5 so that’s potentially quite a range of stories, although we don’t actually know how many are included in the possible gifts)

    • NG

      September 17th, 2018 - 10:44am

      The downloads looks to be
They look to be 1.3 River Songs dairy
      4.3 from the same range
      7.1 from Unit

The 4th download will likely be the CD.
And the cd is 1 of multiple either The Companion Chronicles Fear of the Dalek
      Comapnion chronicles Romman 2 stroy
      Another story
      Destiny of the Doctor 11

      September 17th, 2018 - 11:10am

Me again. Just checked over with the covers online, the downloads are River Song 1.1 The Boundless Sea, Eighth Doctor Time War 1.1 The Starship of Theseus and UNIT 4.2 Tidal Wave. Given that it says ‘from Big Finish and BBC audio’ and all the visible covers are Big Finish covers, I’d guess the fourth was a BBC title.
