Legacy DVD Shada / More that 30 years in The Tardis

Doctor Who Legacy (Shada) DVD

A double helping of ‘Doctor Who’ treasures. Never aired on television due to a strike in 1979, and never fully completed, the six-part adventure ‘Shada’ traces the chase to recover a powerful book, the Artifacts of Gallifrey, stolen from retired timelord Professor Chronotis (Denis Carey).

Skagra (Christopher Neame) is the evil despot responsible for this foul jiggery pokery. Original footage from this episode was used as the Fourth Doctor’s involvement in ‘The Five Doctors’, before it was reassembled, with an older and portlier Tom Baker narrating the missing gaps.

Also included is the BBC-produced documentary ‘More Than Thirty Years in the Tardis’, a compilation of clips spanning the first thirty years of the Doctor, including some never before seen on television, plus interviews with the many stars, writers, producers and designers.

The following features and quotes (via tv shows on dvd) are listed in addition to those shown below…

  • Shada – Flash version
  • Taken Out of Time
  • Now and Then
  • Strike! Strike! Strike!
  • Being a Girl Women in Doctor Who
  • Remembering Nicholas Courtney
  • Doctor Who Stories – Peter Purves
  • The Lambert Tapes – Part 1
  • Those Deadly Divas
  • Photo Galleries
  • Easter Egg
  • PDF materials: Radio Times Listings
  • Production Note Subtitles

New to DVD! Digitally remastered Doctor Who classic Shada! Written by Douglas Adams as his final contribution to Doctor Who, Shada was envisaged as a Time Lord story without a Gallifreyan setting. It sees the Doctor bringing Romana to present-day Earth to visit Professor Chronotis, an elderly Time Lord who absconded from Gallifrey and now lives a quiet academic life at St Cedd’s College in Cambridge.

Also seeking Chronotis is a scientist called Skagra who has a device, in the form of a floating sphere, with which he intends to steal the Professor’s mind and thereby learn the location of a book entitled The Worshipful and Ancient Law of Gallifrey. Skagra eventually succeeds in obtaining the book, which has been borrowed from the Professor’s study by a student named Chris Parsons. He then kidnaps Romana and hijacks the TARDIS.

Original VHS covers and information…

It was sixteen minute’s past five (Earth Time) on Saturday the 23rd November 1963, the day after the – assassination of President Kennedy, when Doctor Who first materialised on to BBC Television.

Squeezed in between the football results and the Telegoons, a legend was born’.

So, from humble flickering beginnings more than 30 years ago, began the eccentric Timelord’s crusade against evil. Now this fascinating documentary charts that remarkable career in time travel.

There are dozens of classic excerpts featuring all seven Doctors, clips from the wide-screen trailers of the two Dalek movies starring Peter Cushing, plus recently discovered material.

More than just a nostalgic birthday programme, unique documentary made specially, for BBC Video,

Archive gems

  • scenes from the missing 1965 Dalek episode DEVIL’S PLANET.

An ultimate celebration of the world’s longest running science fiction TV series, this special BBC Video includes footage from Thirty yaers in the TARDIS, originally transmitted on 29 November 1993.

SHADA.

The long forgotten adventure destined to bring the Doctor face to face with the evil Skagra and his master plan for total omnipotence.
Recording of this 6 part adventure in 1979 was sadly never completed until now – with the aid of Tom Baker, Doctor No. 4.

Now all available filmed and recorded sequences are linked by his brilliant narration allowing BBC Video to unveil Shada in its entirety at last.

When one of the Artefacts of Gallifrey – a dangerous book dating back to the time of the all-powerful Rasillon – goes missing from his study, Cambridge professor and retired Timelord Dr. Chronotis calls in the aid of the Doctor and Romano.

The Doctor is very worried. Who knows what powers could be unleashed if the book falls into the wrong hands? Then the mysterious Skagra arrives armed with a thought-draining sphere and a scheme for one universal mind. But first he must get hold of the book…

This unique pack contains a video and a copy of the original scripts – a great addition to the wealth of Doctor Who titles on BBC Video.

so far on the classic dvd range we have Girls,girls,girls- the 1960s, we have had girls,girls,girls-the 1970s, but we have not had girls, girls girls on the 1980s. i think they should have put it on this dvd release, seeing as this is the last nonrevisited story of the 80s. does anyone eles think this?

And why not have a “Boyz, boyz, boyz” section? After all, there was Ian, Steven, Ben, Jamie, the UNIT men, Harry, Adric (does he count!?!?) and Turlough and of course in recent years Mickey, Adam and Rory

      November 30th, 2012 - 9:17pm

As its the classic range it wouldnt cover micky adam rory. All depends on what style of documentary they would do. It would be easier to do a couple of talking heads ie same as the girls girls girls 60’s.It would be trickier to get all 3 surving together to do the same style as the 70s and 80’s as mark is in australia and matthew is in america

    • gordon

      December 2nd, 2012 - 11:21am

It was a scene that was cut of the invisible tardis of tom ian and liz and was cut because of lighting issues.it was a late cut as it had been already been scored. It was believed to be lost but was found in a mixture of black and white and colour footage which babelcolour worked his magic on.

    • gordon

The director’s cut of ep1 of zygons is only 1 aditional scene which was found recently. The directors cut version will be available as an extra on disc 1. Its not available via angle branching (like invasion of dinos ep1) as some dvd models had problems with the angle branching. Mind of evil wont have alternative colour versions as there wont be room on the disc to have both b and w and colour versions and there probably wont be the budget to do both versions. Only reason why dinos ep1 had both versions was down to colour recovery for ep 1 was

yes for episodes 2 to 6 and was done back in september 2008/09 but there are hundreds of hours of aditional work to get it up to a high enough quality for a dvd release. As no chroma dots exists for ep 1 Babelcolour has been spending the last 18 months hand colourising episode 1 and is due to finish on the 31st december. What i meant when i said we wont get an alternative colour version is: We will get the colour version but we wont get the b and w version as there isnt enough budget or disc space for both versions

I do hope the BBC could find some way of releasing full missing episodes on dvd, alot of collectors have transferred the Loose Cannon Reconstructions VHS to DVD but l think if the reconstruction team could release for use something similar except with documentarys and the usual tardis menu it would be quite cheap to make and would satisfy fans or at least me,

I hope it’s not true, I got horror of fang rock last week and I dont think it needs reissuing and the extras are fine as well as I’m concerned

I hope there only releasing Special Editions that actually need it because if all their going to do is put a fancy cover and a few more extras l’m not buying it, there has to be some better quality available for the story if there going to start releasing more.

What is the point in a Fang rock special edition! The extras are fine and there’s nothing wrong with the picture, I will only get this if it is in a revisitations boxset

Hi, Blink. The schedule for 2013 is like this (so far)
Legacy box and reign of terror in January
Ark in Space SE in february
The AztecsSE/Galaxy 4 episode 3 out in march
Terror of the zygons out in june.
These titles have been confirmed but no release date
      Inferno SE
      The Mind Of Evil
      And underwater menace episode 2
And at least one more SE
These titles are rumoured for release
      Tenth planet (with animation)
      Underwater Menace (with animation)
      Moonbase (with animation)
      Ice warriors (with animation)

To be honest, once all the available episodes are released on DVD, that’s it. I’m not getting blue-ray and the SEs are a rip-off as most of them don’t have the same extras from the original release, so unless they feature other found episodes or animated scenes and new commentaries, I’ll be saving a few pennies, actually pounds.

Disagree with jelly baby anyone. Its only 3 releases(pertwee dedication on the tv movie, tombwatch on tomb and panoptican 93 on 3 doctors) that have had extras removed not most of them. And its down to the rights expiring and not being available. Its not ripping people off. Plus you are also getting a brand new restoration for your money as well (which is the main reason for a revisit) so hardly call it a rip off

I expect those 2 to get seperate releases as its a possibility these are getting animated and their budget can only really stretch to 2 missing episodes

The Moonbase is getting extras made for it as well (and nothing has been said about releasing The Underwater Menace so it is possible as well).

Will this be the last Boxset Release? If so it’s a fitting finish to the Boxset’s Range. Still can’t wait for Terror of the Zygons or the Mind of Evil it would be awesome to have the complete Tom Baker Era and Jon Pertwee Era finally although l will buy Special Edition Releases that are to come.

Maybe, I can’t think of any stories that would fit for a box set.
