Recovered and restored – a classic Patrick Troughton adventure!

The TARDIS lands on an Australian beach in the 21st century. But this is no seaside holiday – within minutes, the Doctor, Jamie and Victoria are under attack.

They soon discover that the Doctor bears a startling resemblance to Leader Salamander, a would-be dictator intent on world domination. Before long, the Doctor and his companions are plunged into a dangerous game of intrigue and deceit as they face off against the enemy of the world…

The standard and reversible covers…

BONUS CONTENT

  • Remastered episodes

Even though all episodes were restored in 2013 for the previous DVD release, Peter Crocker from the Restoration Team is using advances in technology since then to go over each one with a fine tooth comb to ensure they are now presented in the best possible quality for this special edition.

  • “Treasures Lost and Found” – produced by Ed Stradling.

With so much information now available about every Doctor Who serial, it’s not easy to learn anything new, so Toby Hadoke embarks on an exciting treasure hunt to find out all he can about the production. Along the way he’ll interview some of the cast and crew including Frazer Hines, Mary Peach and David Troughton – who made his first TV appearance in this serial as an extra.

  • “Recovering the Past – The Search for The Enemy of the World” – produced by Paul Vanezis.

A brand new interview with the episode hunter Philip Morris, we hear how he tracked down the last surviving film copy of the serial to a dusty room in the African desert.

  • “Remembering Deborah Watling” – produced by Cameron McEwan.

Family, friends and colleagues pay tribute to Debbie Watling who played Victoria Waterfield, companion to Patrick Troughton’s doctor.

  • Audio commentaries on all six episodes produced by John Kelly.

Contributors include Frazer Hines, Mary Peach, Gordon Faith, Milton Johns and Sylvia James. Moderator is Simon Harries.

  • Production subtitles on all six episodes written by Martin Wiggins.
  • Photo gallery produced by Derek Handley.
  • Scripts of all six episodes as PDFs.

The original artwork (left) was updated for the final release with changes made to the console control panel and levers by the Second Doctors Hand along with a few other minor edits. Most retail sites are still showing the old cover…

Have only just noticed and more of an interest then anything else. The end credits to Eotw, part six, both on the standard dvd release and special edition, the credit for Howard King and credit for Fred Hamilton both Flickr, one outwards and one inwards. Just wondered if anyone else has noticed.

Wish that The would release the Faceless ones because episodes 1&3 are recovered so they would only have to Animate Episodes 2,4,5&6 & it would be even better if they released the The Daleks Master Plan because Episodes 2,5 & 10 are already Recovered so they Could animate the others!

The problem is the amount of time and money it would cost. For the likes of masterplan you would need 10 episodes in total to animate as you would need to animate mission as well. It also has a massive cast and lots of varied locations that would make it extremely time consuming and expensive. Much higher than power or shada. The faceless ones would possibly cost more than power despite having less episodes. It has more cast members than power and more sets to animate

one would assume so but never say never

the figurine collection will be changing which is an existing range and titan comics as well, at least on new doctors (inc the 7th)

I’m feeling very positive that they will be releasing it in region 1 soon. They have not long ago announced it for region 4, but it may take some time to get it released for region 1, simply so they can put the new logo on it. Shada may also have the new logo, which is on schedule release on 4 September this year at amazon.com

What a lovely release this was. Picture quality wasn’t that much different but as it was more fixes (about 2000 to be exact) than a complete from scratch brand new restoration it is to be expected. Enjoyed the commentary even though it felt odd at first not to hear Toby Hadoke’s Usual voice. Simon did a good job though. Can’t fault him as he kept conversations going. Production subtitles were the usual high standards of facts figures and info that you would expect from them. Treasures lost and found was a superb piece and surprisingly moving at the end. Remembering Deborah Watling was a lovely piece talking about her career and life. Recovering the past was fascinating and if Phil does track down web 3 an even more compelling documentary on just finding of web 3 could be made. The restoration feature was short but sweet. To finish off the release the trailer and the pat Troughton years intro finishes off the set nicely. 10/10

On Disc 2 of The Enemy of the World “Special Edition”. Is the main menu supposed to be still or is it supposed to be moving? on my copy of Disc 2 the left side shows a picture of Mary Peach (Astrid). But is it meant to be moving and talking or is it meant to be a still image.

The rest of Disc 2 works fine with all the Special Features, It’s just that I thought for a moment that The Main Menu was frozened or something.

Yay! Got ‘The Enemy of the World’ special edition DVD in the post this afternoon. Just finished watching the extra’s on disc two. Especially enjoyed ‘Treasures Lost and Found’. A very rewarding and entertaining documentary. Plus ‘Recovering the Past’ interview with Philip Morris was hugely interesting. He seems certain to know what happened to ‘The Web of Fear’ episode 3, and he believes the amount of episodes missing will not remain at 97. So he must know more than he’s letting on, or has significant leads? Phil even mentions ‘The Evil of the Daleks’! Although I wouldn’t read too much into that as many fans will. It seems more like wishful thinking as he’s a fan of writer David Whitaker. Great to see the DVD cover is reversible too. Plus it doesn’t have ‘special edition’ written on the spine, or the dreaded PG logo’s. Yay!

On most of the classic series DVDs, the special edition releases didn’t have ‘Special Edition’ written on the spine. Only ‘The Green Death’ and ‘Vengeance on Varos’ annoyingly had ‘Special Edition’ on the spine of the reverse cover.

I must have a later dvd release of the Vengeance On Varos special edition. As my reverse dvd cover spine just says Vengeance On Varos. The words “special edition’ do not feature on the spine. This must have been corrected at a later date.

And did you get it this weekend? I hear it’s got a reversible cover. Although it’s pointless if they put all the PG logo’s on the spine, like they stupidly did with ‘Shada’. Made me decide to keep the original ‘Shada’ in the collection, and put the newer ‘Shada’ with my odds and ends of Doctor Who spin-offs.

Nope there isn’t. It would be advertised as including a coming soon trailer. No way bbcww would reveal a web se by putting a trailer on a dvd. They would want a press release. And if there was it would be most likely the season 12 blu ray set as it is the next new release. There was a trailer on the mind of evil dvd for the spearhead blu ray so having a dvd have a trailer for a blu ray release is not out of the realms of possibility

Also, Salamander didn’t leave the Tardis doors standing. He was seemingly ‘dragged’ across the Tardis floor. The planet doesn’t explode like ‘THAT’ at anytime in the story, ‘THAT’ image is more suited to ‘Inferno’! Salamander should be more prominent on the cover, as Zaroff should be more prominent on ‘The Underwater Menace’ cover, well, however made the character was, he was the best thing in it, apart from Troughton obviously.

I really wouldn’t pay much attention to rumours online ollie! It’s now 5 years since anything was found and i think fans have to accept the reality that a lot of doctor who missing episodes are gone forever. I hope more are found, but hope, is all it is. And yes, it’s high time the crusade was animated. Oh and putting it with underwater menace as a box set is great, two stories animated is better than one. Mind, if they did that can you imagine the comments! Still, it would give some people something to complain about and that seems to make them happy! He’s hoping for more releases…

I think once we get the full story of what has or what hasn’t been recovered by Phillip Morris, the aim then should be to release all remaining incomplete/missing stories with animation or photographs/telesnaps.

    Reply
    • Ollie

      February 14th, 2018 - 2:40pm

I’d be happy to pay for animations. I felt that The Power of the Daleks was a fantastic release.

However, I wouldn’t be prepared to pay out for just a telesnap release, like the Britbox release of The Wheel in Space, for example. I still love listening to the BBC Radio CDs with the linking narration; it’s also great if you have the DWM telesnap specials to scroll through too whilst your listening. So I personally don’t feel there’s any market for telesnap recons.

Furthermore, besides the excellent documentaries on the DVD, the recreations of episodes 1 and 4 of The Underwater Menace were a joke!

    • Whorules

      February 14th, 2018 - 6:50pm

The underwater menace does need animated, you might be able to work out what is happening in eps 1 & 4! I would prefer animation to telesnap reconstructions, but if that was all that was released I’d buy them. They could do what they did on the power of the daleks dvd telesnap recon and use the narrated cd soundtrack. Of course, not all stories have telesnaps. As i say, I’d prefer animation but will take what we get!

    • The Caretaker

      February 15th, 2018 - 10:40am

‘The Underwater Menace’ already needs a ‘special edition’ dvd release. However, I think it would need to be paired with another story with animation, otherwise interest could be very limited. ‘The Crusade’ would be the obvious story to release with ‘The Underwater Menace’. As both stories require two episodes being animated.

    • Ollie

      February 15th, 2018 - 12:33pm

They could have originally paired it with The Moonbase seen as the two stories interlink directly into one another. Why they didn’t choose to and instead released TUM in the poor, half-finished format that they did, I have no idea! I keep reading rumours online that the remaining episodes of The Crusade may have been rediscovered so who knows…

Either way, I’d happily buy an animated version of The Crusade; for me, it is the best story of the Hartnell era. Every aspect of it (script, performances, set design, costumes etc.) is perfection!

    • Gordon

      February 15th, 2018 - 12:58pm

The plan at the time of the moonbase release was to do animation for the underwater menace however qurios (the company that did ice warriors) went bust and planet 55 (the ones that did moonbase) was too busy doing other projects. That’s why it was left for 2 years and then released the way it was.

    • Gordon

      February 15th, 2018 - 1:08pm

I can see no way bbcww will release new animated releases together. They spend a lot of money animating them. Box sets bring in less money than 2 single releases. For a single release it’s normally about 13 quid a story on release day. For a 2 story box set the normal price was about 17.99 on release day. Why would bbc ww bring in 18 quid a release when they could make 26 quid for 2?

    • Ollie

      February 15th, 2018 - 1:50pm

That’s a fair point. Just goes to show that they could have made more profit if they’d released less boxsets, e.g. UNIT Tales, Myths & Legends, Earth Story etc. …

    • Gordon

      February 15th, 2018 - 2:37pm

Some stories were paired as some weren’t going to sell well on its own. Eg gun fighters and awakening weren’t going to sell well on its own. Some were paired because they needed a larger restoration budget than a stand alone would require eg a lot of the myths and legends box set budget was spent on the restoration of the time monster

Caretaker, Salamander was causing volcanic eruptions across the globe to get what he wanted from other world leaders. That’s why the Earth in the background looks like its exploding.

    • 1963

In a funny way, I’d prefer a single disc release of the extended version of silver nemesis. I would keep the original release and the extended version. A friend of mine just swaps any disc that is identical with a previous release, so, i think disc 2 of talons of weng-chiang is the same as disc 3 in the special edition, so he just swapped discs. As he put it, I’ve watched all this, what’s the point of watching them again!

This is of no comnmercial or financial use to them alone. Its over 30 years old and the content is of BBC copyright content so cant be edited or used in almost any other way. I cant see what use it is to them as it is alone. Anyway. you all know what im saying. Sad but I get it.

Just throwing something into the mix… What about SILVER NEMESIS S/E. Extended version modelled on the VHS release. I only say because the work HAS ALREADY been done and released on DVD as part of the L/E German 7th Doctor boxset. As such the DVD master already exists and a uk release would require almost no additional work. ????

…for those who are unaware; the German release has ENGLISH and GERMAN audio and subtitles for both.

Agreed! I would buy a Special Edition of “Silver Nemesis”

Still can’t understand the LE German Version of just 1,000 Copies? Unless of course behind the scenes there are plans afoot for a UK release sometime in the future? I’ve never seen the Extended Version on VHS so hope it will get a release at some point?

I agree. Plus a UK release ; having done the work now would be almost obvious from a commercial point of view and make practical and financial sense of doing the work in the first place. Even if there were no initial plans… much like davros connections and many many other initialy exclusive to items im sure it will get a uk release.

Someone below says they haven’t bought the animated episodes as they know that one day they will all be found. I feel the need to inject a touch of reality to the missing episodes. In the last 18 years 12 episodes have been found. Now roughly 28 were found in the previous 20 years. There are 97 remaining missing episodes. In forty years forty have been found, so averaging one a year it could take at least 97 years to find the rest! And remember in the first two decades of the 2000’s less than half have been found compared to the 80’s and 90’s. Well, feel free to do the maths. I’d love them all to be found, but it really is unlikely. Hope is a wonderful thing, but you have to accept that not all of the episodes will be recovered. It was a joy to watch enemy of the world and the web of fear, but animation is very probably the only way we can “see” many of the missing episodes now. It’s sad, but at least we have the soundtracks, many fans don’t appreciate that thanks to those recordings there are no completely missing episodes. Can you imagine what it would be like if all we had from certain stories was photos and people’s memories? As who fans we should be thankful for what we have – we can experience every single episode, hear hartnell and troughton’s performances. Be happy for there could have been an awful lot of gaps in our who collections!

I think that was me, I said that I wasn’t gonna buy any animated missing episodes.

You’re missing a treat then. Some (maybe not all) of the missing episodes animated are very good indeed. My personal favourite is episodes 1 and 3 of ‘The Moonbase’. My least favourite though would be episodes 4 and 5 of ‘The Reign of Terror’. They aren’t exactly badly made animated, but somewhat overdone with some odd choices of angles.

Oh i love the moonbase animation. I agree about reign, they are not bad, just a little odd. I think my least favourite is tenth planet 4, i find the art of the faces is a little too starkly lined for me, oh and the mouths are odd when they talk. But i still enjoy it.
