5.5″ B&M 2017 Collectors Set The Monsters

To find your nearest store visit www.bmstores.co.uk. Please ring (option 3) to check availability before travelling. Priced at £16.99 per set. Product code 294255

This 5.5″ figure set is presented in collectors series window box packaging.

The Monster set contains…

  • Cyber Controller
  • Attack Cyberman
  • Sontaran Skorr

This second B&M exclusive Monsters Set contains The Cyber Controller from the 1967 Patrick Troughton story The Tomb of the Cybermen, A Cyberman from the 1985 Colin Baker story Attack of the Cybermen and Sontaran Skorr from the 2008 David Tennant stories The Sontaran Stratagem/The Poison Sky.

Accessories include a laser rifle and helmet with Sontaran Skorr and a Cyber Gun with the Attack Cyberman.

The new Cyber Controller (left) is a slight variant the original Build a Figure where individual parts were supplied in the “age of Steel wave”.

The face is a darker grey and the figure now has a silver rim below the brain section, the decoration on the brain is also slightly more obvious on this new version.

The “Attack” Cybeman (centre) is a combination of the Earthshock and Rogue Cyberman with appropriate paint application. The gun also has a different paint application. All in all i think most people would see this as an unreleased and new figure.

Sontaran “Skorr” is essentially a re-named re-release although he can either come with a rank insignia badge of 3 (Commander) or 5 (General) in this set. The badge is on the collar below the helmet line.

Great to see the Cyber Controller re-released. Especially with the 50th anniversary of the superb ‘Tomb of the Cybermen’ fast approaching.

Perhaps they should have released a Moonbase/Tomb Cyberman, Cyber Controller and Second Doctor as a three figure release. Would have made a brilliant ‘Tomb of the Cybermen’ themed set.

I’d prefer a classic Sontaran as a person who unfortunately never got one due to the overpriced pods. But, am I the only one who doesn’t mind the new series one being included here? Yes it would make sense to have a 10th Planet Cyberman, but I was planning on doing a classic coloured modern series custom of the Sontaran and this is the cheapest way for me to get it.

And, if the silver and black custom of the new series Sontaran looks good, it’s definitely a recolour I’d love to see for a proper Sontaran story in Chibnall’s run.

B&M’s is a chain of budget shops that sell things at budget prices such as toys. These are budget price figure sets produced on a budget so most if not all figures in these sets have been released before. If you are wanting something that’s brand new or rare or of limited number I would suggest looking elsewhere. Easy

exactly, some people are expecting far to much from these sets

    • Dalek4ever

      July 12th, 2017 - 6:36pm

I think for what you get its worth it! I too don’t understand what people are expecting. Are they expecting the regeneration 6th Doctor Regeneration 4th doctor and 5the Doctor? Rate figures. But so is the cyber controller but still. I don’t know what they expect

    • Weeping Angel

      July 12th, 2017 - 6:59pm

Even though I feel that they could have changed some of the figures in the sets, I don’t know why people are complaining. At least we get some new doctor who merchandise this year, even if it is re-releases.

    • prototype dalek

      July 12th, 2017 - 7:07pm

Any merchandise is new merchandise, especially with not as much Doctor Who Figures now a days

    • Judooning

      July 12th, 2017 - 9:28pm

Although, just because a figure has become rare in the eyes of a collector does not mean it can’t be put in a budget set. It would cost no more to produce a regenerated 6th Doctor figure for one of these sets than it would a standard Sontaran figure that we’ve seen many times before. (Unless of course they no longer have the mould, then fair enough). The rarity of a previously released figure would not effect it being re-released.

I like these 3 sets, and I completely understand the target audience for these sets, but still I can think of many more desired figures that the average “impulse buyer” would still recognise or find interesting.

    • booboo

      July 12th, 2017 - 9:43pm

there would be endless list of desired figures so whatever they do people will complain about something

Some classic figures were co funded by UT and FP so we don’t know what effect that may have in any re-use of them

Other collectors would complain like hell (as some have already regard the cyber controller) if “rare” figures were re-released in cheap sets

    • Judooning

      July 13th, 2017 - 9:36am

Excluding the Eleven and Thirteen Doctors box set, is this is the first ever figure set to contain both classic and New series figures?

  • Ryan Croughan

    July 12th, 2017 - 3:02pm

Honestly, they could have so easily altered these sets to suit collectors and casual buyers using the same figures. I know many people were missing the Cyber Controller, but it wouldn’t have done much harm to add some ice/snow detailing to at least make it a variant to the scene where he first exits the Tomb. As for the Sontaran? Paint the face a light beige and we have Commander Stark from The Pandorica Opens. It doesn’t take a lot but it goes a long way for long time collectors.

the problem is any alteration to the original production run costs money

even snow would requite a new paint mask and and an alteration to the established production process

B&M will only have these I’m sure if they getting a good margin from them

I expect CO are having to produce these at a very very low cost so we are never going to see what some people are expecting from these type of sets

      July 12th, 2017 - 10:44pm

That’s certainly true booboo, and I’m very glad we’re getting these figures at all. I just wish that there was some outlets for even repaints offering variants and improve versions on original figures, because the few variants they release in these sets are welcomed with such great response from collectors. I always thought the ‘collector series’ was a great opportunity for that, and have welcomed these sets each year for the (if slight) but desired variants they produce.

I wish to express my sincere desire that the Doctor Who 5 inch action figure range comes back, in a powerful way, in 2018. A new Doctor, a new show runner in charge, it could be a great new era for Who. I will miss Capaldi, as any Doctor who plays the guitar, has a spot in my heart. But, the show adapts and changes, so too must we. Best of luck to the new Who actor, whom ever he or she turns out to be. Also, best wishes to the Who toy line, it maintains 12 shelves in my collection. Good luck, see you in 2018. These statements are purely my own best wishes .

Probably a silly question, but I’ve seen people asking ‘why is this the Earthshock head if it’s from AOTC’ what’s the difference? I can’t see any on my figures.. Apart from the obvious weathering on the AOTC version.

The difference is, on the Rogue Cyberman, the eyes are enlarged and the faceplate is annoying to put on. If it had the Earthshock head it’d be more screen accurate and no risk of the plate falling off

  • Judooning

    July 6th, 2017 - 9:35am

I’m actually pretty hyped for this set! Cybermen and Sontarans make for great looking figures and you can do some nice poses with them when you have the guns. (Which I am so relieved they are included)

Yeah Okay, a classic Sontaran may have been a bit of a change. But then I suppose the new series one would catch the eye of younger kids due to Strax being a more recent Sontaran in the series.

The only one I think is worth getting is the Monsters set with it having the Tomb Cyber Controller if you missed out getting the build-a-figure. The original figure sells quite pricey when loose on eBay. Other than that these sets are very weak compared to last year (with the blue coat 3rd doctor as an example). Would have preferred a 5th doctor set or even a 1st doctor set.

IMO although it is nice to have collected and built that figure all those years ago- it isn’t fair on those who didn’t get it. They’ve waited long enough to rerelease it. It’s a lot like the River Song they rereleased a couple of years ago- in which people complained then too.

If they’ve got the piping on the legs correct this time it’ll finally be screen accurate – should have 2 sets per leg, not one. A really surprising miss on the design – can only think they simplified it for cost reasons but it’s a shame it’s not right as everything else about it is great.
