What really irritates me is that people are selling these off for really crazy prices I’d gladly pay £15 for one but No people won’t except that and they want a really crazy price like £75 and there not even doctor who fans there just using these figures for there own greedy ends
So lesson of the hour is
To you toy companies put a stop to this!

One person on eBay is bidding on three looped angels each angel is from a different seller that hardly seems fair

      and
      2x dalek sec

That’s a very good idea. Yes very good indeed ! Also do we have any news on when the second wave is out I was thinking December but it might be a bit longer than that any ideas? Or the chase ones might be rereleasesed and now they are just samples just to see how well they sell and to see how many people really want figures that are from other series

Hi. Here are some answers for you.
      1. Wave two is scheduled for January/February 2014.
      2. Chase figures will not be re-released according to Alisdair Dewar, the head of the Doctor Who department at Character Options, however he has considered the Cyberman.
      3. Figures from other seasons are planned (2005 onwards, no classic).

Where did you get info from

  • Exterminator

    October 3rd, 2013 - 10:26am

I too have managed to get all 6 chase figures. I was lucky enough to find 3 rare’s in shops for £6.99, but the others I did buy from eBay.

I emailed Character Options suggesting that in future waves they should consider doing mail away specials. Collectors send in the required number of barcodes cut off the backing card of purchased figures together with a sum of money for the mail away figure and to cover p&p and they then get sent the special mail away exclusive figure(s) in the post.

This is a much fairer way of doing it.

Character Options would ultimately sell more figures too because collectors and kids would have to buy the required number of figures to cut out the barcodes to send off for the mail away exclusive figures.

I’m a child of the 1970’s, I can remember Kenner toys did mail away figures with Star Wars, more recently Diamond Select Toys with their fantastic Stargate SG1 figures. I can remember as a child being so excited when a small package containing a figure came through the letterbox for me.

What do you all think of the mail away idea?

    • booboo

      October 3rd, 2013 - 10:44am

if its viable its a good idea, collect all six and send away for the free one or something like that

I understand the ides of the rares to get people back into the shops looking but its clear a lot are being taken out of the chain

But yes agree, some people who bought a gold Dalek would also have bought dalek sec – core collectors (who are far more than 100 per batch) would have bought everything

the flip side however is that the “toy buyers” wouldn’t so it could dilute sales of both. swings and round roundabouts

    • The Monitor

      October 5th, 2013 - 6:33pm

Certainly agree with the need to have alternatives, but there have been send-aways before in the 1990s.

Why should I/other collectors cut up the ones I bought to get something else. It meant I had incomplete collections because I did not want to sacrifice existing packaging.

So I am not a fan of cutting up packaging or opening packaging.

Not an easy one this. If there is the need to have rarer variants, make them in slightly less volumes and put them on special cards with a limited number and charge more.

    • Exterminator

      October 5th, 2013 - 9:53pm

Anyone wishing to keep the figures mint in packaging would obviously have to buy a second set to open and send off the tokens from these to get the send away figures. Character Options will therefore sell more figures!

Or you could just send in your till receipts as proof of purchase for the mail away figures?

Saw a variant Doctor figure (dark waistcoat) in TJ Hughes today, but left it. Not bothering with this daft game that CO seem to insist we play.
That’s the only variant I’ve ever seen at retail.

Your joking !!!!! I’d buy it for £7.00 just so I could play with it and put it with my other dr who figures what I can’t understand is people who sell them off for crazy prices and then some people buy them then so here’s some advise for everyone out there if you see one on eBay what ever you do don’t bid,bid and your £70.00 is gone just on one figure but if no one bids on them of the buys them for the crazy price then they will go cheaper than the general release

Frankly, I cannot understand this marketing strategy. They know people want these figures and that they will sell as well, if not better than the others. Why deny themselves the revenue!??

Just release them properly and be done with it!

    • The Big Friendly Button

      September 30th, 2013 - 6:48pm

I think the overall objective is to encourage people to go into the shops to look for these figures, though as we have seen they do not get there.

    • booboo

      September 30th, 2013 - 6:54pm

some do, but its clear a lot are being taken out of the retailer chain and sold on-line.

    • The Monitor

      September 30th, 2013 - 7:43pm

Some shops look for them and sell them for a minimum of £30 to collectors. I have been saying the same as Dark Lord all along; release them as standard variants, we get a complete collection and CO get more revenue. The shop gets more turn-over too, so surely its a more win than lose argument.

I am going into toy shops a lot more again, but I am not going to come out with something else instead. The only exception is when I saw a mottled weeping angel and bought one in the hope it might be considered a variant.

    • AlexB

      September 30th, 2013 - 7:50pm

Really?! So it might be worth asking behind the counters of actual chain toys stores like Smyths and Toys R Us?! That’s obscene!

    • booboo

      September 30th, 2013 - 7:52pm

those retailers wont do it (increase the price), were talking on-line retailers or small chains here

    • Radburn

      September 30th, 2013 - 9:55pm

I have given up on the variants – They are pointless trying to obtain & are on a par with the CB limited rares. Both expensive to buy & of such limited supply it’s not worth the effort…

    • Mels

      October 1st, 2013 - 6:39am

Unfortunately I’ve given up on them as well. That’s 6 extra figures CO could have sold me, but didn’t. Other than resellers/eBay sellers, I don’t see who really benefits from these chase figures. I could understand the mentality if different stores got different boxes/sets of variants (so you may have to travel to several stores to get them all) but making them this rare/ramndom is silly. I’m yet to see even one of these variants in store. :-/

    • The Big Friendly Button

      October 1st, 2013 - 7:05am

At the end of the day when you are paying a unbelieveable sum of money for a chase variant, you are in fact paying for a piece of plastic and that is all it is.

    • RexisnotyourDoctor

      October 1st, 2013 - 5:44pm

This is a good point. A very *small* piece of plastic at that. I think it’s very easy to get caught up in the thrill of the chase with these figures, but once you’ve ponied up, let’s say, 50 quid plus p&p for an 11th Doctor variant, I think buyer’s remorse would set in pretty quickly.

I wouldn’t pay these asking prices for figures in the 5 inch scale, let alone the 3.75 range. It does nobody any good but the ebay scalpers, and doesn’t do anything to improve CO’s standing in the eyes of the fan community.

I know! It’s absurd, I’ve emailed them about it numerous times telling them that it’s okay to have chase figures, but when the chase figures are almost separate characters in themselves ie. Black Dalek Sec and Screaming angel, it’s highly unfair to normal collectors!

We don’t know that it is limited to 100. Personally I think it is limited to a lot more. Think of all the people that have found variants on here. Then imagine people that have found variants by not even going on here, and I’ve heard of stores keeping the rares back so I would say limited to 1000 at least or it’s not even limited, just they are releasing a little at a time.

Totally agree. I saw two rare Cybermen on the day of launch but deliberately left one for someone else. I just want a complete collection, but am not willing to pay more than RRP for them. I think the trend with CO to have such limited rares is a missed opportunity for their own profit margins and for fandom contentment.

I remember when I had wanted a Scarecrow figure for ages, I just really wanted one. My Forbidden Planet order messed up and never actually arrived, but I actually managed to find one of those really long figure packs which had a scarecrow in, in woolworths. Ended up just selling the other figures as didn’t need, good times.

I sent an email to CO, and they said they don’t have any plans to make larger quantities of the rare figures.

A chase figure I basically a normal figure but it has been changed intentionally and is harder or rarer to find than the normal ones.

It’s just the fact that even people who don’t like or watch doctor who look for these figures and buy them and sell them on eBay. Also the fact that some shops don’t even put them on the shelves!

I’ve had a look around a few stores for them soon after they’ve been unpacked, but haven’t seen any of these yet. If I do find any I’ll pick them up, but I won’t be heading to eBay for these figures.

Agree Mels – It’s doubly difficult for you to find them. If we can’t find them here in the UK – I doubt if you will have much luck & ebay is silly money for these…
