Synopsis from the official BBC site…

The Doctor becomes alarmed on seeing television coverage of an archaeological dig by a Professor Horner into an ancient barrow near the village of Devil’s End.

He hurries to The Master is posing as the local vicar, Mr Magister, and using black magic rituals to summon Azal, the last of a race known as the Dæmons, whose miniaturised spaceship is buried within the barrow. Benton and Yates arrive in a UNIT helicopter but, before the Brigadier and his troops can join them, a heat barrier appears and cuts the village off from the outside world.

Azal will appear three times and on the last of these occasions will decide whether to transfer his awesome powers to another or to destroy the planet as a failed experiment.

returndevilsendvhsA mythmakers presentation – Return to Devils End

Regarded by many DOCTOR WHO fans as the best all round Jon Pertwee story, THE DAEMONS featured the village of Aldbourne as its central location.

In this special production, presenter NICHOLAS BRIGGS has brought leading cast members & director Christopher Barry to Aldbourne where they recount memories of shooting DOCTOR WHO during one of its most popular periods.

Together with unseen photographs and amateur film of the original shoot, this video will make an invaluable addition to any fan’s collection and provides an in-depth look at the making of DOCTOR WHO in the 1970s.

“RETURN TO DEVILS END has been in various stages of planning for over eight years, getting the actors together in one place at the same time has proved to be an organisational feat worthy of UNIT itself and has only happened because of the dedication and hard work of the stars and production staff to whom I am most grateful.
We would all like to dedicate this video to the memory of Roger Delgado and Peter Grimwade who were part of an era in Doctor Who that I grew up with and adored. If, in this production, we have managed to recapture any of the magic from that time I am content.”

This is one of only 500 limited edition copies of Return to Devils End signed by the cast.

Thats disappointing, because it has become part of The Daemons, in particular it features behind the scenes footage during the location shoot. Still never mind. By the way Gordon have you ever been to Aldbourne? I have, it is a lovely Village.

The fact he is working on it means the daemons dvd release should be about 6 to 9 months away ie between march and may 2012

Nicholas Courtney, I heard the news of his death from a family member. Someone from Dr Who has died, hed been in it from the start, adn used to work alot with the Jon Pertwee character in his years. Courtney, I think it was?
McGann is the Doctor: “…Nicholas Courtney?” Gran: Yes, I think it was.

To hear that news, it wasnt pleasant for me. I knew it would be a big for the Doctor Who community, and all the good fans, viewers out there who rememberd his being a great valued character that accompanied the Doctor, very many times.

I remember seeing it was it first shown on TV in 1971, I was in my last year at school. The Daemons was broadcast in B/W. Has to the best classic story of all time.

The Master’s incantations for Azal in the crypt are the nursery rhyme ‘Mary had a little lamb’ read backwards.

The brigadier’s famous line is well known, Jenkins! Chap with wings there, five rounds rapid!”

They started Broadcasting Dr Who in colour with the first episode on the 3rd Doctor. So in the last 2nd Doctor story, War Games, the Dr had just regenerated (into Jon Pertwee) got into the Tardis in Monochrome, and the first episode of the new series with Jon Pertwee as the Dr it shows him falling out if the Tardis in Colour. All the serials, including the Daemons, were in Colour after that. Perhaps your TV was Black and White and that’s why you rememeber it being Black and White.

Yes, i am from Aldbourne (Devil’s End) and somebody was due to be married at the church not long after the broadcast, they wrote to the BBC as they believed it really had been destroyed! lol.

@boobooNot really will be suprised if it does turn up in 2012 as im sure they usually plan very far ahead (at least a year if i remember rightly) plus restoring it will take time. Wouldnt suprise me if they did a new return to devils end as there are conventions every couple of years and this year is the 40th aniversary so there is bound to be some convention of some sort but i have heard the restoration team are very friendly with the guy that owns the original so lets hope we get bothon the dvd.

@booboo Could be possible but with everything else already plannned for this year it would have to be november/december release which i think would be quite unlikely as they dont normally release classic who dvds in these months. But you never know.

I always thought 30 april 2012 would be a perfect release date as 30 april is beltaine festival in the story plus 30 april is also a monday

That would be ideal, I’m just surprised they have announced it so early if its 2012, other thing is perhaps they planning another “return to devils end” feature for it and will do some filming in Aldbourne in which case people are bound to notice.
