Doctor Who The Mind of Evil DVD

dvd-mindofevilDoctor Who The Mind of Evil DVD

Professor Keller has created a machine that can pacify even the most dangerous of criminals.

But when the Doctor and Jo arrive at Stangmoor Prison for a demonstration, things start to go horribly wrong – especially when they discover that the Doctor’s old enemy the Master is responsible for the machine.

What could he possibly want from the criminals?

And what connects him with an impending World Peace Conference?

Starring Jon Pertwee as the Third Doctor, The Mind of Evil will be released, restored to full colour, on DVD in June 2013.

Previously released on VHS in black and white, after the colour masters of the story were junked, this DVD release sees all the episodes fully restored and re-mastered.

Disc 1 contents

  • 6 x 25 mins approx colour episodes with mono audio.
  • Commentary – stereo. With actors Katy Manning, Pik-Sen Lim and Fernanda Marlowe, director Timothy Combe, producer Barry Letts, script editor Terrance Dicks and stunt arranger Derek Ware. Moderated by Toby Hadoke.

Disc 2 contents

  • The Military Mind (dur. 22’ 43”) – shot back in 2009 on location at Dover Castle, this look at the making of the story is made unexpectedly poignant by the appearance of Nicholas Courtney and Barry Letts, who both passed away in the intervening years. • Now & Then (dur. 7’ 06”) – the latest in our long-running series visits the filming locations used in the story to see how they have changed over the years.
  • Behind the Scenes: Television Centre (dur. 24’ 00”) – back in 1971, at around the time The Mind of Evil was in production, presenter Norman Tozer visited Television Centre to find out what went on over 24 hours in the life of what was then an incredibly busy ‘television factory’.
  • Photo Gallery – production, design and publicity photos from the story.
  • Coming Soon – a trailer for a forthcoming DVD release

vhs-double-boxmind-evilOriginal VHS cover and information

Originally made In colour, this exciting six-part story now exists only in black and white. But as a special bonus, the only surviving colour footage from The Mind of Evil – approximately five minutes from episode six – is included on the end of this tape!

The Doctor and Jo are investigating a revolutionary new way of treating psychotic criminals at Stangmoor Prison – a machine invented by one Professor Keller that literally sucks the evil out of a mans brain. But when the process is complete, what is left behind – a saint or a simpleton?

It transpires that Professor Keller is The Doctors arch enemy The Master. The machine actually houses a deadly mind para site The Master has taken to Earth for his own evil ends, He intends to use it to sabotage the global peace conference UNIT is policing, thus bringing Earth to the brink of war. And when he takes over the prison and hijacks a missile that could wipe out half of Europe, it seems the cards are stacked firmly in his favour. Meanwhile, the mind parasite is growing stronger all the time, killing anyone in its path by making them experience that which they fear the most.

Can the Doctor defeat both the Master and the parasite while preventing the world’s powers from embarking on all out nuclear war?

Hey, this is the first Dr Who Classic I got! It’s an awesome episode, and an awesome tribute to Roger Delgado and Jon Pertwee.

just finished watching the long awaited dvd release of ‘the mind of evil’-fantastic!,well worth the very long wait for’restoration’team to work their magic, jon pertwee was my first doctor, loved early tom baker era-but the series started to go downhill after producer philip hinchcliffe moved on,so,for me,the jon pertwee era represents the series’golden age’

Really? The only story that I enjoyed from that series was ‘The Androids of Tara’. My favourite Tom Baker series is his second.

Bit excited that I’ve just had a shipping confirmation of this – just got Inferno an hour ago and watched the coming soon trailer first. I have seen Mind of Evil before but don’t have much recollection of it so really looking forward to it.

Just watched it, it does get a bit repetitive with similar ‘cliff hangers’ but this probably wouldn’t have been noticed when it was shown over 6 weeks rather than 2 and a half hours. the coming soon trailer is for Spearhead on Blu-ray, and not done in the usual way for a coming soon trailer.

So sorry to hear the of the death of Norman Jones. The sixties and seventies Doctor Who was sold to the public by actors like Jones and Aubrey Woods. Rip gentleman .

with possible Special Edition releases to come to bridge the gap left in-between the last animated releases until the end of the range, what releases are most likely to be released? l’m pretty Sure Gordon who knows mostly everything on the classic series dvd can help out with this one. I just don’t want people falling into a trap and buying say the Green Death months before a Special Edition arises such as what i did 🙁 in this case specifically The Leisure Hive, l’m thinking of getting that one tomorrow.

l’d say EarthShock, The Dalek Invasion of Earth, Pyramids of Mars, The Leisure Hive, Horror of Fang Rock, The Mind Robber, The Curse of Fenric and Ghost-Light are no doubt targets for a Special Edition with the only reason of course for re-release being their age.

      May 9th, 2013 - 10:12am

This is the full list of possible special editions:

      The Mind Robber
      Genesis of the Daleks

      The Hand of Fear
      Horror of Fang Rock
      City of Death
      The Leisure Hive
      Earthshock
      The Mark of the Rani
      The Two Doctors
      Revelation of the Daleks
      Ghost Light
      The Curse of Fenric

with a possible invasion of the dinosaurs SE as episode 1 can be redone by bablecolor.

I’d also say the entire ‘Mew Beginnings’ boxset for other reasons, but your list sounds spot on from basic memory since I don’t have my list right now.

seeing the region 2 cover, makes me feel like l’m getting used to it a little. The cover is indeed way to simple for the amount of effort and anticipation for this release, why purple though? l’m sure not everyone gets what colour spine release they would prefer but this one feels out of place with the drama within the story

A couple weeks ago the BBC released a sneak peak at the ‘Terror Of The Zygons’cover where it showed only the Doctor’s face. It’s (from the square inch reference) going to be VHS style where they draw the faces instead of an actual picture and will be golden yellow. Why purple for ‘The Mind Of Evil’, why yellow for ‘Terror Of The Zygons’?

oh really?! is there a way to see it still? it would be awesome to see it even if it will no doubt be a bad dvd cover from what you have said. I would always think Mind of Evil to be an orange and no doubt Zygons to be a brown. Don’t get me wrong i like colour but sometimes you just can’t agree with it, kinda like the older release of The Green Death being red although in my opinion i kinda liked that.

    April 20th, 2013 - 8:35am

I have not seen this story, but according to all of the hype I have heard in reviews and comments about this story, the cover seems a bit too simple. I have always liked Clayton Hickman’s work, and I love Lee Binding; but I am not really on board with the digital drawing idea. I loved the Ark in Space SE and the Aztecs SE, but sometimes it looks weird, like the Claws of Axos SE. And Jon Pertwee’s face looks creepy with the paleness!

You have all the main elements of the story on the cover, though: The Doctor, Jo Grant, The Master, The Keller Machine, Mind Parasite and the Thunderbolt missiles.

Slightly Conected with the pertwee era the galaxy 4 webshop have a couple of items up for preorder. Return to devils end and the white witch of devil’s end. Return to devil’s end is the classic documentary where the cast of the daemons return to the locations and the white witch of devils end is a new spin off with Miss hawthorne from the daemons. There is also a limited edition box set with both dvds andan exclusive 3rd disc full of extras

The mind of evil is a brilliant story! The cover looks actually better then seeing it in region 2 format. It should of been red but most of the dvds are red and purple does do this story justice and its a creepy, violent and scary story! The special features are awesome and this dvd is coming out in july! So im very excited and will preorder it when i can in Australia!
