Classic Doctor Who DVD and Blu-ray releases confirmed

Classic Doctor Who DVD and Blu-ray releases confirmed

From the official site www.doctorwho.tv

Five enhanced Special Editions, a ‘reimagination’ and the first classic Doctor Who Blu-ray are amongst titles confirmed for release in 2013.

The Third Doctor’s first adventure, Spearhead from Space – which sees him battle the Autons and their masters, the Nestene Consciousness – will be released on Blu-ray in July. Due to industrial action, Spearhead is the only adventure of the 1963-89 run of the series to be made entirely on location film, which can be upscaled to Blu-ray HD.

June sees the long-awaited DVD debut of classic Fourth Doctor adventure Terror of the Zygons, with a extra sequences added to episode one; alongside gritty Third Doctor story The Mind of Evil, restored to full colour glory for the first time since the 1970s.

In August The Ice Warriors will be released, with the missing episodes two and three reconstructed using soundtrack and images, as on the 1998 VHS release.

And there will be further special editions of The Ark in Space, The Aztecs, The Visitation, Inferno and The Green Death, all of which were released early on in the Doctor Who DVD programme and missed out on improved remastering techniques and expanded special features.

The release schedule so far:

February 25: The Ark in Space: Special Edition
March 11: The Aztecs: Special Edition (plus Galaxy 4 reconstruction)
May 6: The Visitation: Special Edition
May 27: Inferno: Special Edition
June 3: The Mind of Evil
June 24: Terror of the Zygons
July 15: Spearhead from Space Blu-Ray
August 5: The Green Death: Special Edition
August 26: The Ice Warriors
September 16: Scream of the Shalka

(Note: these are Region 2 dates, Region 1 releases are normally a few days later. All dates are provisional and subject to change.)

ice warriors sounds like a weird one, i mean why has it been delayed by 4 months? I think they are planning animation for it and the recons as extra’s like they said originaly. Well there is a convention at the end of this month for dr who dvd animation releases and they said they have some big plans to announce at it so i hope they announce the ice warriors.

I would sincerely hope so, otherwise the release just seems lazy after the Reign of Terror. Let us hope they are simply pulling proverbial wool over our eyes.

1 thing i have noticed about the article is that they say spearhead blu will be upscaled. As it was shot on film it wouldnt need upscaled almost as if the person writing out the report has no idea

There won’t be a Tenth Planet DVD release unless the other missing episodes are discovered as they are currently missing from the BBC archives.

Stupid old BBC, they never should have wiped so many episodes, otherwise we’d have the joy of watching stories like the Tenth Planet on DVD by now.

Still, at least they did not wipe the all important beginnings of Doctor Who being ‘An Unearthly Child’, ‘The Daleks’ and ‘The Edge of Destruction’, otherwise a lot of us would never have brought the brilliant ‘Doctor Who – The Beginnings’ DVD Box Set 😀

Missing episodes? Last time we checked there were three of the four episodes from The Tenth Planet still in existance.

It looks like Tenth Planet will be the final release then – maybe for November for the actual anniversary? There’s definitely three episodes unless the BBC have recently done something VERY silly!

    • DOCTOR WHO ONE

      February 8th, 2013 - 8:46am

Yes, Scream of the Shalka was indeed an animated story with Richard E. Grant as the 9th Doctor before the 2005 relaunch of Doctor Who which saw Christopher Eccleston made officially the 9th Doctor on screen.

As for the Tenth Planet, the reason that has not been announced is because most of the episodes of that story are currently missing, only part 1 and 4 [or is it 2 and 4 ?] are available.

    • DoctorWhom

      February 8th, 2013 - 12:46pm

Could be that its a red herring for ice warriors until the animation is anounced. Dan hall is at a convention in a couple of weeks time and a world exclusive has been hyped. I know steve roberts mentioned the recon is an extra which would not make it main feature. It apparently was originaly due in april and it doesnt make sence being pushed back 4 months unless they are planning something for it. Some of these release dates feel wrong ie releases 2 weeks in a row so it may change

They list Galaxy 4 with The Aztecs, but haven’t listed The Underwater Menace with The Ice Warriors, so it could still be released elsewhere (either by itself as there are two episodes or on another release).

I expect it has something to do with money and the fact that they already had one animation project going

    • Anonymous

      February 7th, 2013 - 9:33pm

Most likely they were busy with The Reign of Terror, and going by a brief clip on their website, they may have done e Tenth Planet, so there really wasn’t time for The Ice Warriors.

Shame Cosgrove Hall shut down when it did, we wouldn’t have had the six year delay and it may have offered enough time to get us the story, and more possibly.

    • drjakeyoung

      February 7th, 2013 - 9:34pm

the tenth planet better be animated, but what about the underwater menace?

    • Anonymous

      February 7th, 2013 - 9:37pm

Nobody knows, I’d suspect it would be just a reconstruction as well (possibly on its own DVD given that they also have episode three).

    • Some bloke

I like them, at least missing stories with telesnaps are more true to screen than are the animations

    • Anonymous

      February 7th, 2013 - 9:44pm

Plus, after the pretty bad reception The Reign of Terror got, I wouldn’t see BBC Worldwide rushing to commsision more from them.

    • Some bloke

      February 7th, 2013 - 9:45pm

yeah agreed, i think telesnaps, off-screen images, surviving clips and audio is the best way forward now

    • drjakeyoung

      February 7th, 2013 - 11:26pm

i thought (bar the 1st part of episode 4) that the reign of terror animation was good

    • Tim M

      February 8th, 2013 - 10:08am

Telesnaps DO NOT EXIST for parts 4 and 5 of ‘The Reign of Terror’ and neither do they exist for parts 1 and 4 of ‘The Invasion’. Which makes sense as to why these stories have missing episodes animated. Other stories that could have the potential for DVD release such as ‘The Crusade’, ‘The Tenth Planet’, ‘The underwater Menace’, ‘The Moonbase’ and ‘The Ice Warriors’ DO have telesnaps (and some have clips) which could be used with the soundtrack instead of animation. That may be the way forward for future incomplete stories.

  • Some bloke

    February 7th, 2013 - 9:23pm

Hang on, if i remember rightly, they only reconstructed about 5 mins of the 2 episodes of ice warriors for video. They better reconstruct the entire two missing stories, otherwise it’s practically worthless!

    • drjakeyoung

      February 7th, 2013 - 9:31pm

Maybe both 😈 i am so angry at the moment, wait the past 3/4 years waiting for them to animate this, and they don’t!!!

    • Some bloke

      February 7th, 2013 - 9:33pm

I understand, If they dont animate it, they should at least reconstruct it with images, footage and soundtrack. OH YEAH, i just thought. If they do animate tenth planet 4, then how will they fit in the regeneration sequence. It would look really out of place. The only thing they can really do is reconstruct it.
