Big Finish Rose Tyler The Dimension Cannon

Available to order from www.bigfinish.com

Billie Piper joins the Doctor Who audio universe reprising her role as one of the television show’s most popular companions. In this new character-led series, Rose will be jumping realities in search of the Time Lord she loves…

‘We’ve been building this travel machine, this dimension cannon, so I could… well, so I could come back. Anyway, suddenly, it started to work and the dimensions started to collapse. Not just in our world, not just in yours, but the whole of reality.’ Rose Tyler – Doctor Who: Journey’s End.

As she begins a desperate mission to find the one person who can make a difference, Rose discovers that it’s not only her universe at stake. Across alternate dimensions, parallel timelines – where divergences may be tiny or cataclysmic – every Earth is under threat.

Time is running out, but Rose won’t stop searching until she finds the Doctor…

1.1 The Endless Night by Jonathan Morris

As his parallel universe darkens, Pete Tyler has found a chance of survival. Punch a hole through dimensions and someone can jump through – and maybe find a way to the Doctor’s universe.

On her very first trip, Rose visits an Earth that’s about to get colder. As a long night begins, Rose meets different versions of her parents. And one man who could help her search. His name is Clive…

1.2 The Flood by Lisa McMullin

Making another leap with a new companion, Rose finds a world suffering environmental change. The rain won’t stop, and the government could be hiding the scale of the impending disaster.

While Rose connects with another version of Pete and a strangely compelling young man, Clive meets someone special of his own. In this world, there was no Clive for Caroline to meet, but love can cross dimensions.

1.3 Ghost Machines by AK Benedict

Pete decides it’s time he accompanied Rose on one of her dimension jumps. But he couldn’t have picked a worse time. They arrive in a world where technology took an extraordinary path, and where the recently deceased Pete Tyler had a very different kind of success.

As machines start to break down, Pete meets his widow, and he and Rose must confront truths about their ‘family’. But they may not escape this Earth alive.

1.4 The Last Party on Earth by Matt Fitton

Rose and Jackie Tyler visit a home very close to the one they left behind. But some old friends are missing, and some are unexpectedly present…

Rose meets two young men she knows should be together – it can sometimes take the end of the world to see what’s right in front of you. Meanwhile, the Powell Estate faces Armageddon in the only way it can – by throwing a party.

David Richardson told us more about the return of Rose in last month’s Vortex magazine: “I love this series. I mentioned identity earlier and it really feels unique to the Big Finish catalogue. This is a Doctor Who spin-off that’s principally about characters.

“It’s not about monsters and aliens. There are plenty of threats and lots of thrills. But primarily it’s about the end of the world (in four very different ways) and how characters react to that. It’s not always pretty but sometimes it’s beautiful. And Russell’s [T Davies] help with the story development was invaluable – he got us to this really interesting and special place. I’m so hugely grateful to him.” You can read the full article in August’s free Vortex magazine.

At the announcement of The Dimension Cannon, Billie Piper said: “That’s the great thing about Doctor Who. It challenges new-thinking. It’s progressive and it can be political in amongst these human emotions and relationships. I think that’s its greatest appeal.”

Cast

Billie Piper (Rose Tyler), Camille Coduri (Jackie Tyler), Shaun Dingwall (Pete Tyler), Mark Benton (Clive Banks), Joe Jameson (Rob)

More cast details to follow.

Rose Tyler is returning for a new Doctor Who audio spin-off, and she’s bringing along her family and friends…

‘We’ve been building this travel machine, this dimension cannon, so I could… Well, so I could come back. Anyway, suddenly, it started to work and the dimensions started to collapse. Not just in our world, not just in yours, but the whole of reality.’ Rose Tyler – Doctor Who: Journey’s End

Billie Piper is returning to the Doctor Who universe in Rose Tyler: The Dimension Cannon, a new audio series made in association with BBC Studios.

It follows Rose’s journey through dying parallel worlds, and also stars Camille Coduri as Rose’s mum Jackie, Shaun Dingwall as her dad Pete, Mark Benton as alien investigator Clive Finch and Elli Garnett as Caroline Finch.

The four episodes follow Rose’s mission to seek out the Doctor, the only person who can save the doomed multiverse… ‘I love how normal Rose is, and yet really extraordinary,’ says Billie Piper. ‘She lived a normal average life but she is incredibly curious and has an enormous capacity for love and empathy and is really spirited. She is extraordinary.”

‘I approached Russell T Davies with the idea of Big Finish making a Rose Tyler spin-off,’ says producer David Richardson. ‘He was very enthusiastic – as always – and suggested we followed Rose’s journey that ultimately leads to her finding the Doctor in The Stolen Earth. I found the proposal irresistible, and instantly script editor Matt Fitton and I were throwing around ideas. There is a whole multiverse of possibilities. Russell suggested including Jackie and Pete, and embraced my idea of including a parallel universe version of Clive – who of course was killed off in the TV series (in the 2005 episode Rose).

‘Russell guided us gently through the development – steering us towards ideas that worked brilliantly, ensuring things that needed improvement were fixed, and also throwing out the ideas that didn’t work. I’m absolutely delighted with what we have – a family drama about the end of worlds. It’s about love and loss and things that might have been – and our brilliant cast have embraced the emotional scripts.’

A helpful note, I think, for all commenters…

No one cares if you hate a character. No one cares about your desire to be nasty about actors you don’t know in public. It doesn’t matter.

Don’t want it, just say you’re not really interested. Don’t ruin things for everyone else. Hasn’t Doctor Who taught you people anything? It seems not.

Always thought Clive should never have been killed off in Rose, he would/could have made an interesting recurring character.

And people complain that Clara Oswald is overrated and awful. In my opinion, Just let Rose go. She left I ‘Doomsday’ and came back in Turn Left (al of which was explained). Billie returned as The Bad Wolf/The Moment entity.

Just let her stay in the past. I really don’t see the point. It just shows that Billie Piper canrpt find any acting jobs at the moment. I’d be more interested in seeing (or hearing) a Donna Noble spin-off set before ‘Partners in Crime’ as Donna explained to the Doctor when she was searching for him, that she was constantly looking for weird goings-on to try and locate him.

That would be Billie piper, multi award winning stage actress is it? Fascinates me that people forget that just because an actor isn’t on the tv it doesn’t mean they are out of work! A good example is Colin baker who has a huge amount of stage work compared to tv. I’ve a suggestion for whovian, just don’t buy the cd’s.

Also, by your own argument, that means you must think tom baker, peter davison, colin baker, Sylvester mccoy, Paul McCann, David tennant and virtually every other big finish actor “can’t get any other acting jobs at the moment”. Remember that to an actor these audios are relativity easy to fit into a schedule only taking up a small amount of time to record and they don’t all need to be there at the same time making it a lot easier to do these kind of stories where lots of old cast members are reunited. Personally I loved Billie as rose, but I have no interest in big finish cds these days so I just won’t buy it. Judging by other comments though other people are very pleased about this release and I hope they enjoy them.

Kinda bummed that Mickey isn’t in this. I’m sure his absence will be explained but hopefully he’s in the next one. I knowhe eventually ended up with Martha but this seems to be set between Doomsday and Turn Left. Mickey left after that, so he should be here in this set.

Yeah and where is Tony Piper as well. At the end of Doomsday, Rose says her parents gave birth to Tony. I mean he’s probably a 2 year old at Stolen Earth/ Journey’s end. But knowing how dangerous Parallel Earth(and Earth are), they probably wouldn’t get a babysitter because if there is an invasion, they won’t know if Tony is save.
They can just get a 2year old to talk every now and then.

      Where is Mickey and Tony?

      1) This isn’t a boxset saga.
      2) This shows Rose venturing to other worlds with Clive and her family – Mickey isn’t part of her family.

      1. Donna Noble.
      2. Clara Oswald.
      3. Bill Potts.
      4. Nardole
      5. River Song.
      6. Graham O’Brian.
      7. Yasmin Khan.
      8. Ryan Sinclair.
      9. Martha Jones.
      10. Amy Pond & Rory Williams (in joint position)

In my opinion Rose Tyler and Captain Jack Harkness are two very overrated characters

    • Anonymous

      November 28th, 2018 - 11:08am

@whovian how can you say Ryan Sinclair is one of the best companions ?

He’s only been in 8 episodes and to be fair he wasn’t very good in any of them.

I respect that it’s your opinion but I think your earlier criticism of Billie Piper was a bit harsh.

    • SJF

      November 28th, 2018 - 11:19am

      September 6th, 2019 - 1:19pm

Reading back through my previous comments, I still have the same opinion about Rose but my top 10 as of now in 2019, top companion would be Donna for her arc in which the Doctor has to remove all of her memories of him. Clara takes 2nd place, Bill Potts in 3rd place (Would have been good to see her develop a bit more), Nardole in 4th place for his comic relief antics and in joint 5th place, Graham O’Brian and River Song.

Hopefully all those interested in these audio stories will enjoy them

It just gets boring and tiresome whenever a new series of Doctor Who is being filmed, etc, that all those rumours start of ‘Rose Tyler to return to meet new Doctor’, it’s never ‘Martha & Mickey meet new Doctor as married couple’ or The Doctor will come face-to-face with older Regan, many years after they parted ways’

It’s always Rose, absolutely no offence to Billie Piper as she is a decent actor (Unlike so many actors nowadays, just look at some soaps)

Its far too many which is why i think people are annoyed. It just spoils the mystery of doctor who if you fill in all of the blanks with audio adventures and their not exactly cheap either. I understand the money that goes into making these but surely they need to limit it down a bit. The next thing you know, we will find out what the creature in midnight was. Basically, they need to prioritise more as no normal person can afford all the stuff they are bringing out.

Yeah, they are starting to take it a bit far now.

At the moment I think they’re still exploring stuff that’s worth it (Time War, Paternoster Gang, Jenny, this [so long as this is the only volume]) and being a shameless Clara fanboy I wouldn’t mind seeing them do something with her (either standalone stories focusing on some of her echoes meeting Classic Doctors, or her post-“Hell Bent” adventures) but I do think if they try to go too far beyond all that they will start to ruin things.

Just look at the amount of Time War stuff they’re doing. I mean, I love it all, but they really shouldn’t try to do any more. 8th Dr Time War, War Doctor, War Master, Gallifrey Time War – that’s more than enough now.

    • Adam

      November 27th, 2018 - 12:12am

I’m happy with what they’ve covered so far, and being a shameless Clara fanboy I wouldn’t mind some stuff with her in her TARDIS, or maybe her echoes meeting Classic Doctors, but that I think would be the limit of all the stuff that would be worth covering.

This release should be okay so long as it’s the only volume – any more than that would be too much.

They’re certainly pushing it with the amount of Time War stuff they’re doing now. That definitely needs to stop before it goes too far.

Maybe not Adam. It was quite clear in Name of the Doctor that Clara’s involvement in past adventures was quite minimal. And most of the time he didn’t even know. But if she were to meet all the other Doctors, it’d be too much like the River Song series.
Now get Jenna and Maisie Williams to do a wee boxset of post-HellBent adventures in their own TARDIS….that might be interesting!
