BBC Store To Close on 1st November 2017

“Although you will still be able to watch your purchases until then, from now on we are no longer making programmes available to buy on BBC Store.

If you are a BBC Store customer, you can find out all you need to know here.

If you recently purchased a series pass, those remaining episodes will still appear in My Programmes.

The BBC will continue to find new ways of making BBC archive content available. And do remember that programmes on BBC iPlayer are now available to watch for up to 30 days after broadcast, alongside a range of complete series and fascinating collections.

Our sincere thanks for being part of BBC Store. We do hope you enjoyed discovering some wonderful programmes, old and new!”

Like many of you on here, I haven’t used BBC Store, but was a big user of the BBC Shop. I guess the product portfolio bods at the Beeb didn’t do their “Porter’s Five Forces” properly….

Bring back the “BBC Goodies” shops..!
(Now there is a chain of shops from the early 1980s that I remember with fondness)

“The BBC will continue to find new ways of making archive content available”… So what next? Deals with Netflix and the like? An expansion of iPlayer (like channel 4’s All 4) for programmes which have sold out on DVD? Even relatively recent shows like Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes have been discontinued on DVD and it would be a shame to waste all of the brilliant programmes they have made… Not to mention classics like I Claudius, Dad’s Army and Fawlty Towers…

Got a £60 refund from them. I quite liked it. I started purchasing a few series from there. It was a nice little place to store all my Doctor Who/Torchwood stuff online all in one place.

60 years of television and nothing was released that you couldn’t get on dvd I am not surprised. People would have bought more if it was something different !

I’d found a few things I couldn’t get on dvd. Rik Mayall’s Kevin Turvey special, the Around The World in 80 Days 20 Years On, some interesting documentaries. It’s a shame as it would have been good to keep them.

I still like to buy a physical item, never been a fan of a purchase that isn’t really mine. Did wonder if the store would go the way of the shop, that was the thing I miss, used it all the time.

It was a strange thing, the BBC Store. You could buy and steam classics like Doctor Who and Fawlty Towers, which is fair enough and would probably have sold, but then they’d add 100’s of episodes of Doctors or Home Under The Hammer, which probably didn’t sell yet still had to be supported. It was nice to get to see some classics seen again, like I, Claudius, but they really should have targeted their content more into classic comedy and drama.

Does that mean I won’t be able to watch anything I’ve bought?

Just done the refund request. Only £10 worth of episodes, but I’d rather have a refund than a waste of money.

This better not effect potential for more Animated Remasters, seeing the BBC really was pushing Power Of The Daleks through BBC Store

I’m not suprised by this. I purchased the Dad’s army animated episode ‘a stripe for Fraser’ then realised I couldn’t download it to a stick or put it on a disc so my friends could watch it. Had to watch it on the PC only, and even then it was streamed from the BBC so was never mine…

Agree with every word you say. What was wrong with the Shop in the first place? The only thing I can think is that they didn’t want to hold stock.

probably because the running costs started to exceed profits

The BBC Store never appealed to me (and it seems to many other fans as well). I think replacing the BBC shop with this was a huge mistake, since many fans prefer collecting physical DVDs rather than downloads. To me this service always felt like some sort of wanna be competitor to Netflix. So please BBC release more DVDs instead and maybe make a deal with Netflix to do some Doctor Who spin offs.

if I’m honest not very, most of what people want to watch is available on other platforms, especially Doctor Who

I agree, sometimes I use them and also a lot of people already might have the DVD of many episodes already. In the space of about a year and a half we have lost the BBC Store and the BBC Shop

I would imagine in both cases they were costing more to run than they were making

really miss the BBC shop, especially as no one has filled their shoes by importing some of vast range of USA items

Would do wonders for the market if a company did, like the BBC Shop. It’s also a shame about the huge costs of BBC America Postage If it was less then I would certainly use it more to get items that we use to get before, now the postage can sometimes out weigh the total cost of the item

I had accounts with both the UK & USA BBC Stores. After the UK one closed down the USA one stopped shipping to the UK & eventually the rest of the world. Now they only cover the US & Canada. I spent a small fortune with both.
